The machine = the music industry. The video would play on a screen behind the band when they played it live. The end of the song is the elevator going to the party on the top floor, which is the setting for the next song, "Have a Cigar," also about the music business.

Lol...I worked with a guy (think Sheldon Cooper like), he listened to my pink Floyd Animals CD n 3 hrs later he handed it back with a full summary of each song n the album in general.
The next song on the album, Have a Cigar, helps explain.

There is a lot of over produced music, especially now. But nobody has ever topped how perfectly and precisely Pink Floyd produced their music. It’s not to make it sound “better”, it was to get it just right, to convey the intent. Production is supposed to do that but most artists don’t get it right. On this same album, there are other songs, the title track Wish You Were Here for example, that are much simpler in their production. Different intent and meaning. This track is produced to convey exactly what you said, over produced, machine like. It was for a reason and you got it I think!
