Pink Floyd is the G.O.A.T. nothing touches their mastery of music.

The song is about the music business but can just as well represent the machine of life we all are chewed up and spit out by.

Call me crazy, but the Floyd is my favorite band when considering all eras of rock music. Disturbed is my favorite active group, but the music that Roger and David created has stuck with me since I was a kid watching the VHS copy of P.U.L.S.E. and the live version of Echoes in Pompeii with my stepdad over and over again. There should be a picture of Pink Floyd in the dictionary next to the word "Legendary".

song is about the record industry (the machine) churns out music for the masses to buy, the end is them riding the elevator up to the pent house where the record industry big wig party is happening

Every time i hear some Pink Floyd, i notice how they literally just care about music quality, not like in the actual scenario that the artist makes songs only for the money and mainstream.

I'm pretty sure you just reacted to Have a Cigar, which is the song right after this one on the album. Haver a Cigar happens within the `machine.` That's what all those sound effects are at the end of this song. It's them being brought into the machine where they eventually end up in front of a presumably greedy record producer..."Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar, you're gonna go far"

I get emotional to this song. I still think of dropping my son off at kindergarten. Hated that day.

It's about their introduction to the big money music industry, the album 'animals' is about what they found there.

The very end of Welcome to the machine is the ride in the super fast elevator up to the penthouse. Then you meet the Hollow, shallow record executive who gives you the BS through the lyrics of the next song "Have a Cigar"! That's what that strange stuff was at the end of Welcome to the machine!

Many of the lessons within this song carry into their masterpiece The Wall. Peace/JT

The Machine is basically any environment (mostly business/industry related, such as the music industry as in the song, or even capitalism itself) that sells you a fake dream, a dream of mindless consumption, as if success and happiness would come from owning superfull material possessions. "We told you what to dream" makes us think about where does our need of owning expensive stuff comes from, do we really need Jaguars to feel fulfilled? Is that really our own dream, or did something/someone else forced it on us via all the types of media? If you depend on a salary, you work for someone, your effort and work makes someone else richer and you are paid with a mere fraction of what you produce, and you use that fraction to buy the stuff you also might have helped to build. So welcome my son, welcome to the machine.

My guess is its the transition from childhood when kids had dreams and everything was happy and magic and new to adulthood when all that goes away and the rest of your life is comitted to a grind.the machine.

Can you believe this song was recorded almost 50 years ago? On all analog instruments.

    • @johngalt97

They were morphing their analog equipment into the digital age (crudely) through shear effort.

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond 1-5" next from this same album. The song immediately precedes this. Should have been done first.

PINK FLOYD, "WELCOME TO THE MACHINE". The fact of the matter is. Between this song, and "HAVE A CIGAR". Coupled with "WISH YOU WERE HERE", and "SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND". Made this the classic album it has become. Mind Music, at it's finest. DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, WISH YOU WERE HERE, THE WALL, THE GROOVY 70'S. Are you kidding me? ....

Founding band member Syd Barrett had fallen for the excesses that the music industry made available as long as the artist performed how and when the music industry wanted.
Syd suffered from the effects of drug abuse, pressure from the industry and other mental health issues that were way beyond the ability of the band to help or even fully understand. Unable to play a live performance Syd was simply dropped 😢

Probably my favorite album by them, more so than Darkside and The Wall. Atom Heart Mother would be second but Alan's Psychadelic Breakfast is terrible and drags it down, so Darkside is second.
