I saw Tool live and we actually couldn't see him on stage. He was dressed in all black in the back left corner. And when I saw A Perfect Circle live (one of his other bands) he had his back to the audience The WHOLE time. He has also stated in his Autobiography that he wore gimmicks and outfits so that way when he was in public with his son people wouldn't recognize him. Dude's a beast
Maynard now performs at the back of the stage and in the dark, at least with Tool. He has a few other bands, too... A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. He also is a winemaker and owns Merkin Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars in Arizona, where he lives.
THIS performance is a wild one. It's all good. Maynard James Keenan is in 3 bands (more cameos/covers as well) and his performance in tool is basically to use his voice as an instrument. As far as this one is concerned, it's actually kind of abnormal to see him in the front. But he is LOCKED in on this performance. Lyrically and his "performance" visually mesh so well. I've only seen them live once, and he's actually normally in the back not even with a light on. They typically put on really intricate light shows and movies that play along with their music. This was 1993 btw, so they're a little different in their approach. Glad you're liking it. 46 & 2 is a good one. Lateralus. Pneuma - Danny Carey feature is a great one.

K, So Maynard has INTENSE STAGE FRIGHT. So he gets into a character to be able to perform, his performance in this mirrors the lyrics about being fucked-up and the pain it is. Imagine a drunk wanting to be "Sober".
So I haven’t seen this touched on by others yet but Maynard (who by now i hope you know is the singer) has stage freight. So when he came out to sing this; more like preform this. He did so by diving into the role of someone battling addiction. A sort of “i’m playing not me out there” kind of mindset. Which rewatching (or in my case watching others react to this as I sing it) this you’ll feel even more. And those lyrics... he makes this truly one of a kind
new subscriber here, it's so cool to see you experience the best band ever through fresh eyes. some other good choices to react to: Right in Two, Invincible, Rosetta Stoned, Wings for Marie, and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2).
Maynards personna in this song is to be the embodiment of addiction. And obviously the man puts everything into his performances. A Tool show is almost like an out of body experience. Its dark, for sure, but they make you deal with emotions we usually push aside. Not to mention the musicianship is fantastic. And their lyrics are top shelf, deep. Great Group. Great Song. Great Reaction.
Just like Freddie Mercury from Queen..a reporter asked him what instrument he played, he said "The crowd, darling." (Although Freddie was so talented instrumentally.) Maynard is the same kind of frontman.
He does look like he's on something, but he is just in it. Really, really in it. I remember hearing Sober when it first came out back in the 90's. My friends and I were just like you. "This is cool as hell, but what the f*&^" Great reaction!
I love how this is a frank conversation between the addict and the addiction itself. Maynard performing the roles for both onstage like this is just perfection. The impact he was aiming for still hits as hard today as it did in 1993. The entire band is amazing but Maynard is the ultimate front man. The way he picks an audience member to focus on due to his stage fright has the unintended consequence of adding that something extra to the performances. This better go down in the annals of musical history.
Next Tool song should be Pnuema - the live Drum Cam! This one always throws people off guard, because it is such a strange performance. Once you read all the lyrics to the song, you realize he's just really getting into character.
You are not wrong, Kurtis. Maynard for sure leaves an impression with this particular performance! This song and the performance is stellar! It blows me away - first impression wasn't particularly good, but I went and got addicted to seeing it! Feels insane tbh... 😂
When you deal with someone close to you that is addicted to a substance, this is their mindset. They will do whatever it takes to keep the high. You will be used. Aside from that, Maynard couldn't perform like that if in fact he was stoned. Perfect.
Usually, Maynard is in the back behind the rest of the band. The song is about a friend and musician who thought he was at the top of his game only when he was wasted. This is freakin' theater.

Happened to me too, but it's fun.
I'm going to give my two cents on this performance, which is from 1993 Reading Festival (UK). Their live shows these days are a lot different. First, Sober is was the album's single at the time, it was played on the radio. I even heard this live performance on the radio at the time. So if any song was to be broadcasted it would be this one. I'm sure Tool knew this and put on their best show for this song. Not saying the rest of the show wasn't good, just they knew they had a bigger audience during this song and wanted to impress. Why wouldn't you? Maynard, the lead singer, you could say, embodies the music. In the earlier days he was very energetic (not sure that's the right word) on stage, if you see any of their earlier concerts on RUclips you'll see that he's quite physical in his movements. Some are amusing... These days he stays to the back of the stage more. Many people make assumptions about why Maynard is at the back. He doesn't suffer from stage freight as many like to say. I've yet to find a reference for this. Going by his own biography he hates the term 'frontman'. He believes he's part of a group and all members are important. He doesn't want the focus all on him. In all the bands he's a part of, he is not in the typical 'frontman' position. Another reason for his choice of position is due to the vocals that he sings. He thinks the best place to sing them are at the back of the stage to avoid noise. Suggest going through their earlier stuff first, just my personal opinion. Most people seem to start out with 10,000 Days or Lateralus and jump all over the place. I think experiencing Tool through it's evolution is interesting. Don't need to do the songs in order. Try Bottom next. :) Enjoy your Tool journey.
Maynard is an amazing entertainer. Also, he was once in the military, and using those skills he's had to put a fan on the ground in self defense and continued to perform. I didn't see it live, but saw vids on it.
Adam Jones (Tthe guitarist) doesn't move much because TOOL is a mathematical band, for real. He's counting. This is very early TOOL. Keep digging into the rabbit hole and see how they evolve. I've seen them in concert too many times to count. One of my fave bands of all time.
Maynard (the singer) is an odd bird. Let people have done a great job explaining his performance for this one but now a days at live shows he's in the back by the drums with no lights directly on him, just the background visuals highlighting his silhouette. Tool is simply amazing and requires a deeper dive into lyrics to truly appreciate. Multiple listeners to even begin to appreciate what they just did. Lateralus is one you should experience. Great video as always.
Acid man.....acid, a member of ministry gave him a bottle of bushmills with a couple hits of acid in in prior to this show.....or so I read in a article
I'm pretty sure Maynard said that he has severe stage fright, and it helps him be less nervous by acting in character. Also with the amount of fans of tool that are bound to some type of substance I think he was trying to deliver a message

By the way, I loved seeing you getting confused with Jambi haha.
Enjoy your Tool journey.
This was exactly the same reaction as mine! I was like "WTF is happening to the singer"... I really enjoy it though
This is my favorite song ever. I feel at peace while I listen. Great video. You gotta check out VAST (have not seen any reactions to them ) pretty when you cry is my favorite 😊 I'm weird it's ok lol
VAST is one of my favourites too, ever since I first heard Here on a free compilation album put out by Kerrang! magazine. Jon Crosby is a special talent. I salute your impeccable taste Jessica x
@@ameliacharles2284 thanks sweetie
@@jessicas7336 VAST do have the rare reaction

Not many people know of them and they should
@@jessicas7336 I totally agree with you Jess. One of the greatest debut albums ever. Been a fan since it came out and I got to see them on the Music For People tour and when they toured Turquoise in the UK. Magical x
Maynard used to have a bit of stage fright. Now he sings in the back and is even better.
The song is actually about a friend of the band who was only creative when he was drunk.
It’s absolutely meant to make you feel uneasy.
Now that you see what's up with Maynard, you've got to check out his other bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.... Listen to Puscifer and you'll understand how much he loves to fuck with people
Maynard just being Maynard 😄
Some great heavy metal songs jumpdafuckup by soulfly, Locust by machine head, walk by pantera, I stand alone by godsmack, halo by soil, hail to the king by avenged sevenfold
This song is written from the perspective of a friend of the band who felt he could only be creative when he was drunk. This is Maynard's performance art depicting addiction from that persons perspective.
Great reaction! Plz react to all their songs but make sure to keep 'Third Eye' and 'Rosetta Stone' for final two
Great Video👍
You know I will never know why I find Maynard so attractive here 🤣
Opeth...Ghost of Perdition, Live at Red Rocks....it'll change everything
Try Danny Cary (Tool drummer) live drum cam video of Pnuema.
you’re wrong about the lead singer‘s stance on a few new vocal coaches that’s the best position for singing the time for music and singing etc.. Thank you for your candor . 👍
Maynard the lead singer doesn't' do drugs. He is playing a part to the struggle of drugs.
Song is called Sober...he is playing a character. He isn't on anything, he is being theatrical.
Check out tool "learn to swim". Way back then they were talking about global warming and the rise of water levels in the ocean.
Learn to swim = AEnema, is that!! TooL= GOAT!!!
Wecome
He is embodying the mind of an addict. It was written about a friend of his from his past. The friend was another musician that should have been a legend but the drugs held down. I think I got that kinda right anyways
Tool The Pot!!!!!
