Thank you to everyone who explained the whole "beat" situation! I knew I wasn't going crazy. 😂 Please keep in mind that I left my comfort zone behind to expand my musical horizons. A lot of you are very understanding. I appreciate your patience!
27 year member of the Tool Army here... listen to this song 2 more times and you will catch the convergence of the separate rhythms of the guitar, bass, drums, vocals. Hope you keep listening to them and try to always have lyrics handy. They add an entirely new dimension to the message.
IMO, Jambi is probably one of the hardest songs Tool has to catch the beat in and you are correct, it's by design. Tool is known for using polyrhythms and having multiple time changes within each of their songs. Very technical stuff, some people refer to it as Math Rock. Try Vicarious and The Pot of this same album. Both are an easier listen beat wise.
You literally took the words out of my mouth. I was about to explain the polyrhythms but then I saw your post! Glad to see another TOOL fan brother!!!!
They’re always changing time signatures and sounds. That’s the progressive part of progressive rock. You just gotta let go and let Tool take you on a journey. This is probably my favorite band ever. I really hope you listen to more!
The secret to finding the groove to a tool song is this... There are like 6 rythems at once. Pick one... groove... change at will. Eventually they will all fold into one giant groove. More please.
As a drummer, I was lmao the whole time to your reaction for a beat. Hahahaha. Tool is against standard time signatures and you go from 2D to the fifth dimension. Love it.
3:13 I’m not even gonna nod my head and catch the beat, 3:26 nodding his head 🤣🤣🤣 there’s TOOL and then there’s everyone else! Keep bringing TOOL 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘
No, it’s not just you. A lot of their songs are like that and they definitely do it on purpose. People much more musically educated than me can and will tell you all about it, I’ll just say it’s one of the reasons I dig their music so much. Their earlier stuff is easier to get into from a beat/time signature perspective. Sober is a good example of a more basic rock song from them and there’s a great video on RUclips of them playing it live at the Reading festival. I highly recommend it, if nothing else, just for the opportunity to see Maynard (the singer) out front with the band, killing it vocally. Nowadays he sings from the back or off to the side at shows. For early songs, Ænima, Swamp Song, and Hooker with A Penis are my jams. All time favorites are all off the same album: Parabola, Lateralus, The Grudge, and Schism. If you wanna cry (they’re incredible, just keep some tissues handy), Wings for Marie, Pt. 1 & 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) are about Maynards’ mom and are sublime. I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for doing your thing!
Naming off a good handful of my fave Tool tracks - right on, buddy! So often it feels like I'm in the minority because the recs I see come in are great (lol, like what isn't?!) but there are so many other *jamming* songs that are ignored.
Kudos for going outside your comfort zone and expanding your horizons. Tool is an experience and journey that you just need to let yourself go to fully enjoy it. Hope you do more. At some point you should experience Lateralus.
TODAY: {Kurtis}: "I'm having a problem catching the [BEAT] on this one." *[BEAT] = The True Cosmic Pulse, manifested by Danny Carey's octopoid limbs. SIX WEEKS LATER: {Kurtis pumping his fist into the air, screaming along} Prying open my third eye! Prying open my third eye! Prying open my third eye! Prying open my third eye! Prying open my third eye! Prying open my third eye! Prying open my third eye! Prying open my third eye! Money on that. The Pot is a good place to move on to. Maybe hold off on the new album (Fear Innoculum) until you have triggered TSMR-tingles? (Tool Sensory Meridian Response)
The gentlest way to approach TOOL is to go through songs like The Pot, Invincible, Sober, Prison Sex, which are more digestible for an ear not used to the great uniqueness of TOOL. Or you can listen some of the older songs, before TOOL really became TOOL. Once you leave, have a good trip. You will not regret!
They like running a 7/8 instead of a standard 4/4, that’s where you are getting that off beat. Then you might have parts where the drums are still 7/8 but the guitar will be in 4/4. Tool songs will take you on a journey.
Him: I'm having trouble finding the beat in this one Every Tool fan: haha haha haha. Relax man, let that go. You don't get to control how you listen to Tool. Haha
I cannot tell you how much I am enjoying watching you trying to put Tool in a neatened box! You made my morning, brother! This is what separates them...what elevates them! They lay waste to the conventional norms that we associate with music. There are no 4x4 counts to be found. I am subscribing to you...not only because you're authentic...but, your head may explode. :)
Ok so Jiambi, it’s like a person having his frist beer ever and chooses Guinness. Hmm not really what I expected. I suggest you try The Pot ( Bud Light) 46 and 2 ( Miller light ) Before you know it your Downing Black and Tans
Don't worry about the beat. Just react. Let the music take you over. Let the images take you over. In your 2nd listen, it will feel like a different experience.
"I'm having a problem finding the beat on this one" Tool, in a nutshell! I just found your channel today, and I had to see, if you've gone down the Tool Blackhole, and I am very, VERY pleased to see that you have. New Sub!
Have loved watching your videos. Highly recommend checking out Rosetta Stoned by TOOL if you want to check out (my personal favorite) a song almost nobody else has reacted to. Keep it up!
Also: Jambi is a blue-faced (later green) genie who lived in a jeweled box, first appearing in The Pee-wee Herman Show. Usually appeared once per show to grant Pee-wee a wish, often with unexpected results. Sometimes he appeared more than once per show or not at all. His catchphrases included "Wish? Did somebody say 'Wish'?", and the magic words "Mecca lecca hi, mecca hiney ho" (which grew more complicated in select episodes; John Paragon later confirmed that it was "fake Hawaiian"), and once a wish had been granted, "The wish is/has been granted. All hail/Long live Jambi!", after which the doors to his box would close. After the incantation he would either nod his head or gesture, and send forth blue or green energy rings that, when in contact with the wisher, will grant the wish. I listen to Jambi every day.
It's a pulsating upward flow of energy starting at the base of your spine. you can't control how it flows through you. Just surrender to the ride and don't worry about controlling it.
With the exception of the guitar solo, which I believe is in 6/4….whole song is in 9/8 time signature….a very fun time signature to play with, can sound both on or off at different times or at the same time. Definitely my favorite Tool song, the rhythmic flow is TOP notch
Tool is other level rock music. This band is in a different plain of experience musically. Personally, I can't get enough of this band. Once they get in you, you will never listen to rock music the same way.
You can find the beat. But you have to work for it. You have to actively listen to Tool. Their polyrhythms are unmatched. It’s not off beat, it’s just different time signatures than what you are used to. I nod me head to Tool, but you gotta put in the time first. Believe me when I say it’s worth your time.
This song is mostly in a 5.5/4 or 9/8 feel. The easiest way for me to find the time signature for this one is count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and. The "and" after 5 is where the next down 1 beat hits. It's genius
The beauty of it is if you bop your head, sometimes you're catching it with your chin and other times with the top of your head. The fun of it is how the seamlessly oscillate between the two. Then right as you start to figure it out, the drop into that instrumental jam and your like AYYYEEEEE I GOT THIS PART 100%!
KBM The more you listen to Tool the more you realize you don’t listen to Tool, you experience Tool. As you get more suggestions and do more reactions you’ll understand the gift of Maynard and this wonderful band.
Welcome to a whole other universe! You have entered into the realm of Tool 🤘🏼 congrats! I love Tool one of my fav bands! They have so many great songs you should do more 😍
Tool is about the journey my man. You have to earn it. Get through what they are saying and when its done you begin to start to see. In the distance is that thing, in the back of your mind that sits there waiting to released. Thats Tool. It will fix whats inside, because they are the literal tool.
Welcome to the world of Tool that is weird time signatures. So off that it's good. React to Pneuma. Probably one of the best drumming performances I've ever heard. A simple song but really beautifully structured. Pneuma, Schism, Sober and The Pot are probably my favorite songs of theirs
Tool has transcended having a beat. Just close your eyes and soak it in. Soon enough you'll get it. Somewhere on RUclips there's a clay-mation video set to this song. You should check it out
The guitar and drums only match every 6 measures. Follow bass on this one. Technically, in the end there are 3 time signatures going on to finally meet at the apex breakdown. But Yea, it's all done on purpose. Lateralus is another song they play with time signatures as well. It follows the fibbonocci sequence.
"The" beat... It's the thing I love about Tool. There are usually polyrhythms going on all over the place. Sometimes there are two or three clear pulses, depending on what you latch on to. Other times, there's something cutting against the underlying pulse in a way that obscures the downbeat.
Thank you to everyone who explained the whole "beat" situation! I knew I wasn't going crazy. 😂 Please keep in mind that I left my comfort zone behind to expand my musical horizons. A lot of you are very understanding. I appreciate your patience!
You need to start at the beginning when Tool was angrier. Start with Hush or Opiate.
I can't think of any better band to react to so I hope he starts with Sweat and spirals out to 7empest.
Do the pot, live reaction sober, hush, and live reaction to Danny Carey pneuma
27 year member of the Tool Army here... listen to this song 2 more times and you will catch the convergence of the separate rhythms of the guitar, bass, drums, vocals. Hope you keep listening to them and try to always have lyrics handy. They add an entirely new dimension to the message.
Besides Tool, if u wanna go crazy, listen to Dream Theater, specially The Dance Of Eternity (100 or more changes of time signatures in 6 minutes😂😂😂😂)
"I can't find the rhythm."
Welcome to TOOL.
Harmonious chaos. It's all over the place but the pieces fit. I know cause I've watched them fall away.
@Nico Crestmere "the pieces fit" hehe, I see what you did there👀
schism is one of my fav tool songs btw ;)
Just vibe. Eventually all the rhythms soak in and your body starts swaying like a shaman or something.
This comment right here ^^^
Yep!!
You can tell the seasoned Tool reactors by the sway rather than traditional headbang
Correct
Yeah this is how it works ^^^
"I'm having a problem catching the beat on this one"
Welcome to Tool, my friend. Polyrhythmic magic!
For someone who likes rap, Tool must be mind blowing! Though, Tool is beyond amazing and makes all other bands sound ridiculous.
TOOL, the only band when after an 8 - 12 minute song you complain that it's over.
IMO, Jambi is probably one of the hardest songs Tool has to catch the beat in and you are correct, it's by design. pol·y·rhythm
a rhythm which makes use of two or more different rhythms simultaneously.
I.e. Impressive af.
Next song, Danny Carrey live drum vid, so you can watch the master beats.

same!

EXACTLY!
Totally agree!
"Ok, this is... They're doin' that on purpose."
Welcome to Tool.
Tool is very known for odd time signatures in their music. It's why no other band sounds like them. You've got a long way to go on your TOOL journey
A long way to go in music journey in general TBH.
These guys are in a league of their own 💯🔥
Best bad ever. Can't take other bands seriously!
Try Karnivool, and their song Goliath.
@@gandalfthesober5502 Thanks for Karnivool, that's a new amazing band for me!
As a drummer, I was lmao the whole time to your reaction for a beat. Hahahaha. Tool is against standard time signatures and you go from 2D to the fifth dimension. Love it.
The different rhythms make it so much more interesting than just an average, pop 4/4 beat. This song has one of their least crazy rhythms.
It's so funny to watch someone try to bob their head to TOOL.
3:13 I’m not even gonna nod my head and catch the beat, 3:26 nodding his head 🤣🤣🤣 there’s TOOL and then there’s everyone else! Keep bringing TOOL 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘
And two songs later, he's super into them. I love watching this evolution ❤️
No, it’s not just you. A lot of their songs are like that and they definitely do it on purpose. No right in two? That song actually leaves me in tears often. Makes me think about the human condition too much
You are going to fall in love if u keep listening dude
These guys are incredable
Kudos for going outside your comfort zone and expanding your horizons. Tool is an experience and journey that you just need to let yourself go to fully enjoy it. Hope you do more. At some point you should experience Lateralus.

YES THIRD EYE, I will DM him to add that to the list

TSMR is one of the silliest things I've ever read and I love it. Thank you for that laugh.
Yes...

Open up. Go down the rabbit hole.
"Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses!"
To find the beat with tool you have to remember, there is no spoon.
Tool is insane. As a hip hop fan, try The pot
Him: I'm having trouble finding the beat in this one
Every Tool fan: haha haha haha.
Relax man, let that go. You don't get to control how you listen to Tool. Haha

Ok so Jiambi, it’s like a person having his frist beer ever and chooses Guinness. Hmm not really what I expected.
I suggest you try The Pot ( Bud Light) 46 and 2 ( Miller light )
Before you know it your Downing Black and Tans
This song is cool becuz even tho the instruments/vocals sound disconnected from one another, there actually is a structure to it & it's a genius one
Don't worry about the beat. Just react. Let the music take you over. Let the images take you over. In your 2nd listen, it will feel like a different experience.
The face of a rapper hearing a song not in 4/4 for the first time. Priceless.
You are one of my favorite. Reactors to this song because it threw you off so much but you still enjoyed it.
Tool is LIFE
"I'm having a problem finding the beat on this one" Tool, in a nutshell! I just found your channel today, and I had to see, if you've gone down the Tool Blackhole, and I am very, VERY pleased to see that you have. New Sub!
Tool, one of the only bands I know to incorporate the Fibonacci sequence in their time signature. Fucking Genius.
"I feel like this is not what I was expecting" welcome to TOOL.
Have loved watching your videos. Highly recommend checking out Rosetta Stoned by TOOL if you want to check out (my personal favorite) a song almost nobody else has reacted to. Keep it up!
You can’t just throw Rosetta Stoned at a TOOL virgin.....😉
Masters of polyrhythms
TOOL..... GREATEST BAND EVAAAAAAA....U just embarked on a Great Journey....& Ur About 2 listen 2 every song...!

I listen to Jambi every day.
Head-bang: "normal" metal
Confused bobbing: prog-metal
Been a Tool fan since the early 90's... Genius! Amazing.. don't try to figure them out... Sometimes there is no explanation. Just be and feel.
You don’t catch the beat with Tool. You just go on the journey through time, space and dimensions. Welcome to Tool!
I LOVE watching ppl accepting Tool for the first time!!
Minnesota has some wicked hip hop bro!
Please Atmosphere "Until The Nipple's Gone"
Haha. The secret to enjoying Tool! Sit still and listen to the song! 😂👍 It’s a shame that so few people these days can actually do that.
it's a polyrhythm until exactly 1/2 way through the track - at exactly 3m, it all lines up, and hits a major triad...god-tier math.
You dont just listen tool, you experience tool! Plz vicarious next
You jumped right in the deep-end sir
Tool time signatures are like Florida weather. If you don’t like it, wait a second & it’ll change.
Jambi was the best first song! it's how i get peeps hooked.
Good reaction video.
Yes sir. Welcome to tool
Welcome to TOOL...
fun reaction! thanks for it

When you get your head around 5/4,,,,, 6/4 and 9/8 timing,,,,
Tool makes sense
Welcome to the world of TOOL!!!! I suggest you check out Lateralus next!! Welcome to the rabbit hole
A secondary reason for the title is that the time signature is Iambic Pentameter;
literarydevices.net/iambic-pentameter/
Tool is an experience. Accept that the time signatures will confuse the shit out of you and just feel it.
It's not a dancing song but I used to love to run on the treadmill with this playing.
respect a guy who knows who frampton is
Welcome to Polymorphic BEATS!

Think your the only person from all the reaction videos I've seen to no that's a talk box Adam is using. Nice bro
"Was that it?" Yeah, typical response to a Tool song, even the ones that last 8+ minutes long. LOL 😂
Finding a beat is irrelevent to everything else tool brings lol stop worrying bout the beat lollllll
This song is mostly in a 5.5/4 or 9/8 feel. The easiest way for me to find the time signature for this one is count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and. The "and" after 5 is where the next down 1 beat hits. It's genius
almost all their songs are polyrhythms but once u get it down, it’s just 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
THIS IS MY SHIT! I can't play this song while driving. lol
Same😄

Can't blame him for trying 😂
Hey man, life is most exciting when we get out of our comfort zones. Let the man explore!
Like being invited to the finest restaurant and keep desperately looking for ketchup... Dude! :)
Welcome to the tool rabbit hole
Brutal, brutal time signatures
It’s a waltz with multiple repeating time signature changes
"I think they made this song specifically to fuck with my head"
--Everyone after every Tool song ever haha
I've loved tool since they first came out. You should react to Schism by Tool
Even Fear Inoculum - starts off in a 4/4 groove to lull newbies into a false sense of security then bam 11/8 😆
People say you open up a whole new part of your brain listening to rythyms like this. Like thinking outside the box.
Tool got a lot of talent drummer is really good singer has good vows skill for sure
I came here just to see the response to "it's off beat on purpose" lol
Welcome to the world of Tool that is weird time signatures. So off that it's good. React to Pneuma. Probably one of the best drumming performances I've ever heard. A simple song but really beautifully structured. Pneuma, Schism, Sober and The Pot are probably my favorite songs of theirs
When you try to count the beat you miss the song.
Tool is my favorite!!!
This is TOOL. You don’t find the beat; it finds you. Just relax and wish it all away.
Tool has transcended having a beat. Just close your eyes and soak it in. Soon enough you'll get it. Somewhere on RUclips there's a clay-mation video set to this song. You should check it out
For Tool songs if you want to nod your head to the beat, pay attention to the bass and don't forget that the vocals are an instrument as well.
