    A few products from this review were sent to me by Banggood for testing. This does not mean that I do get all my products. I review also a lot of products I bought myself. I started these reviews because from my experience not every tool from China was worth buying. So I wanted to make in-depth reviews to show you which products you should consider and which product you better leave alone. The fact that Banggood sent me products occasionally does not change the way I make my reviews.
    I still give in-depth reviews and give you my honest opinion! On this, you can count on! I have a good experience with Banggood.com and they have a lot of woodworking tools nicely organized on their site.

    It is so good to see this level of quality being made on a range of tools from china. Nothing stops this apart from customers willing to pay and manufacturers realising that the quality is worth the extra effort.

    Excellent review, thank you. I bought it after watching your video on the Banggood page and I have zero regrets. I've paired the deluxe flip stop with it and it's great, though I may end up swapping out the stop for a smaller one, as you need a fence around 7 inches longer than the length you need to cut, due to its size. Not idea, but the accuracy is very high. Cheers

    Dennis, as usual thank you for your well thought out review. I did order this miter gauge from Banggood and I am very pleased with it as per your review. You mentioned you were looking for a "matching" fence. Have you found one that you recommend from Banggood or elsewhere? Thanks. By the way I have ordered several other items from Banggood in the past year and find that your reviews match with my impressions. Thanks again for all of these reviews.

    Great review! I do believe your review nails it that this is likely the best that money can buy, and at a cheaper price than others. In my case though, I’m going to go with that incra clone, the one that you have been using. It’s a lot cheaper, is very accurate (other reviews say same) and I don’t ever see myself needing to cut one degree resolution angles that also need to be super accurate. If I do, I’ll spring for this one. Also, one could reference up any needed angle with gauge blocks like you showed. So for the budge conscious, like me, I’ll go with the cheaper one, at least for now. But thanks for letting us know about this!

    Great review. Part of me wishes I had seen it before I purchased my Harvey MG. But, by the time I put a fence and micro adjustable stop block on it, it would have been close to the same price. (I got it at a big discount). So, only a small buyer's remorse. Thanks for the great reviews.

    As a Land Surveyor, I found the discussion of cumulative error in the 6-sided figure is interesting. Systematic error is cumulative (bad gauge setting), but random error (wobbly gauge) tends to compenensate for itself over many measurements. The +/- errors balance out, especially with more measurements. We experience this while surveying traverses around closed parcels and are trained to eliminate systematic error by reversing setups, taking multiple measurements, or finally removing the error mathmatically from the measurements because it can be well understood after a few observations. Reducing the dataset (or workpieces) to those only containing small random errors should be the outcome. In a woodworking practice these principles may be applied by flipping parts, alternating left and right cuts, and so on. Repeatability can be a liability in some cases.

      I understand what you mean. And when you want attach something to each other straight. This flip over thing will work. But in case of a miter I do not think this will work.

    The Jessem locks by tightening the handle. The issue with having a tooth lock arises if the teeth break, damaged, or machined incorrectly. By going with a friction lock, they eliminate these issues.

    I've found your reviews valuable and liked this one. Two comments, though.
    My first comment. While it is important to have a table saw blade parallel to the miter slots, that has nothing to do with the accuracy of the miters. Even if the blade were at a 45 degree angle to the slots, I believe you would still get an accurate angle. What would happen, though is that the cut wouldn't be clean. Shimming the fence to match the blade will make what would otherwise be an accurate cut have the wrong angle. Try it. Clamp a piece of wood with a dado to the table saw top at some angle to the blade. Put your miter gauge set at 90 degrees in the dado and make a cut. If the wood is angled towards the blade, it will grab as you get to the rear of the blade. If it is angled away from the blade you will still get a cut at the right angle.
    My second comment. The reason to have half degree resolution is to be able to miter octagon frames. That requires a 22-1/2 degree cut. Octagon windows are not rare. You can even buy them at Home Depot.
    I've started looking at your reviews before buying stuff from BangGood. Your doweling jig review was what convinced me to buy it.
    Thanks,
    Ken

I have a Woodfast 2600 sliding panel saw which of course has the larger slot for a mitre guage on the slider. I think I saw a comment by you about checking out the larger format. Would love to be able to adapt this particular device because of its accuracy or find that there is a bar that I could retrofit. Best wishes from Australia, Phillip

    Dennis, Happy Née Year! I have been anxiously awaiting this vid, ever since seeing you Instagram post. I have a Shopsmith Mark V and the stock Shopsmith miter gauge is the exception to the garbage stock miter gauge rule, but for extreme accuracy it does require the use of a tool like the MiterSet. This one looks very interesting and it makes me wonder if I could retrofit the Shopsmith pistol grip hold down. I doubt it, but it is an interesting thought. Here’s hoping that you make 2021 your best year ever! Scott

    • @HookedonWood

    Love seeing these chinese tool videos, but I have to point out a couple things. First, regarding the Harvey miter gauge is that it is adjustable. If your saw blade is aligned properly with your miter slot, then there should be next to no adjustment necessary if the face of the gauge is perpendicular to the rail. Second, the plastic split washers have their own issues. They wear down over time and you have to replace them. Also, if you have a table saw that has seen a lot of use, there may not be enough adjustment with those washers to get a good enough fit in the slot for the guage to register properly. I have tried several miter guages that use these split washers for adjustment and none of them, even my incra, has as good of a fit as the miter guages that use the split bar design. Just another experienced based perspective, take it for what it's worth.

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  3 года назад +1

      Hi Nunya, thanks for this information. It is always welcome, especially when based on experience. I agree with the right aligned saw blade. But still, I think it is very useful that you can align it. I agree that the advantage of the Harvey bar is that it will not wear out. But I do not find it a sophisticated way. Good to read the harvey is adjustable. I did not find any screws at that side which made this possible. Is it in the fence?

    • @nunyabizness6734
      @nunyabizness6734 3 года назад

      @@HookedonWood To align the fence you lock it at 0 degrees and loosen the 4 bolts across the top and adjust the fence to the blade using a square. The holes are oversized and allow for adjustment.
      As a side note, I've also found that outside of the 0 and 45 degree stops, I never use the angle scale on the miter guages... any of them. I'm always using a bevel gauge to set the miter angle along with a couple test cuts.

    • @langrock74
      @langrock74 3 года назад

      I like the miter bars with spring-loaded plungers. The split ring adjusters aren’t all that great, especially if the miter slot isn’t perfectly even, like in a contractor saw.

    I'd like an accurate miter gauge, but ever since I've known about the MiterSet, I think I prefer the style of a setup block. It's essentially a flat piece of stock with a miter slot, and reamed holes for pins to set any miter gauge to a desired angle. The original MiterSet positions it's 'angles' by numbering the pin holes by polygon sides, and the original MiterSet allows for closed-loop miters of 4 to 20 sides, plus a 0 degree position. The nice thing about these kinds of setup blocks is that you can have one made, for relatively cheap, with any desired angles. For example, a 17 sided miter loop would have angles of 21.1764706, you're never going to find that resolution on any miter gauge, you'd be lucky to find a highly accurate tenth of a degree on an expensive miter gauge, and almost never a highly accurate hundredth of a degree on a miter gauge without paying a hefty price tag, yet modern CNC machining is easily within tolerance of a couple thousandths and the MiterSet is only 80 USD, which is an amazing value considering the accuracy it can give. I personally haven't seen China copy the MiterSet yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if a Chinese manufacturer has. MiterSet also has a standard version, but it's only limited to 10 miter positions per side, whereas the segment version has 17 positions per side, both for the same price. It's a precision tool that makes any unprecise miter gauge into a precise setup. Honestly, I'm surprised Woodpeckers or Incra, or similar companies, haven't copied this concept themselves.
    Products like this make me wish bevel gauges were also a thing. Sure you can just tilt your blade, but you'll _never_ get any amount of precision out of it, even with magnetic angle blocks. I'd rather have a bevel set on a pushed fence/sled that has the accuracy of a miter gauge. Imagine trying to cut material for any complex polyhedron, basically anything other than a cube, mitered dihedral angles are near impossible without accurate setup blocks, precision you'd never get from miter gauges. The beauty of setup blocks is that they can be made to be highly accurate for a significant reduction in price, if not a decent fraction of the price when compared to a miter gauge of similar accuracy. Couple this with the fact that the mitered dihedral angle example requires a good amount of trigonometry just to find the angle needed, and further this by the fact that most sources for these angles use radians and not degrees, something most material workers won't be bothered with doing, millwrights are typically the only ones who actually deal with trig in the shop, when a setup block is a no-math solution with instant results.

    I was on the fence with this one due to the cost for me, $230 Canadian, but the other mitre gauges from China weren't going to cut it for me so after watching this video and having this gauge tick all the boxes I went ahead and got it, just waiting for it to ship.

    Hi Dennis, I always appreciate your reviews (and they have resulted in quite a few items ordered from Banggood..). I'd like to correct you on the reasoning about squaring the miter gauge to the saw blade though, as your line of thinking, can lead to dangerous results.
    Saw blade should always be adjusted to be exactly parallell to the miter slot, as a first step, before anything else. Then fence, with possibly a very very small adjustment to the right in the back, away from the blade. Miter gauge then a perfect 90 to the miter slots. Or to the blade, should not matter since they should be perfectly parallell.
    Consider a theorical badly adjusted blade, back end 1mm to the right. Rip fence parallell to miter slots. Make a rip, wood will bind at the back -> kickback! Might even burn a bit due to friction against the blade. Crosscut with perfectly 90 to the slot miter gauge, not a problem, wood will just be extra clear of blade in the back. Might even leave a better finish, since it will not touch the teeth in the back! If miter gauge is perfectly 90 degrees to the miter slot, cut will be exactly 90 degrees, that the blade is off does not matter!
    Consider the other way, not adjusted blade, back end 1mm to the left. Perfect rip fence, parallell to miter slot. Ripping will work just fine. Might even leave better finish, no upstroke touch of teeth in the back. Crosscut with miter gauge - wood will experience a strong lifting effect when reaching the back upstroking teeth. Might even burn a bit due to to friction against blade just before that. Risk of kickback.
    While 1) rip fence CAN be adjusted for a badly adjusted blade, rips will be fine, 2) miter fence can NOT be adjusted to fix this. It will follow the slot, however you adjust it. If blade is to the right in the back, probably ok. Miter gauge must still be 90 to the slot. If blade is to the left in the back, you're screwed. Strong uplifting force, possible burning, risk for kickback.
    In short, the whole thinking of adjusting miter gauge to blade is just, sorry, wrong. It works for the rip fence, but not the miter gauge.
    I had terrible problems with binding and high risk of kickback on my table saw before I understood this. My fence was a bit to the left in the back.. I think that the reasoning above should be some kind of ... mandatory thing to understand for everyone with a table saw. And if using miter slot to the right of the blade, checking that it's actually parallell to the primary miter slot is important. It's a little ”more” ok if both slots are away from the blade in the back (like a V), atleast if crosscutting thinner boards. But using a slot that goes towards the blade in the back (A-shape) is dangerous.

      Hi Daniel, interesting story and you are right. I just have to absorb it a bit to find a right solution. Of course this problem only happens if your saw blade is not aligned with you slots. But people should be aware of the principles you described. Thanks for your post!

      @@HookedonWood haha :) I have not seen a video that explain the risks clearly, for rips vs miter cutting on left side vs on right side with blade/rip fence/miter slots at a small angle error to left or right. Just mentions of one or two of the risks in videos about something else. If you manage to explain it clearly, I think that’s actually a video that’s missing from youtube. There’s a finite amount of combinations to describe, but maybe hard to do in a short informative video that people will watch.

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  3 года назад +1

      @@DanielNilssonSe That is why I have to absorb your comments. I think I want to come back to it in my next China tool video. Have to figure out, how to explain. How to visualize that people get it! and what to do about it. In the end, I think the solution is to align your blade correctly to your slots. That solves the problems, and if that is not possible, there should be aware of this risk. You should think differently about the guidance of a rip fence and a crosscut fence that follows the slots of your table saw.

    I really like the idea of a screw mechanism to adjust the perpendicularity (I've always wanted a reason to use that word 😄) of a mitre gauge.
    I have an Incra 3000. It's a great tool but the idea of having to adjust something into perpendicularity with a small mallet seems counter-intuitive. I had to readjust my Incra after resetting the sliding table and it took ages of back and forth and retesting. I guess I spent over three hours; getting close, adjusting, overshooting, adjusting back, overshooting, rinse, repeat... It was very frustrating for something that is an expensive tool.

      This one has more fix stops. The WNEW is hard to set on specific angles where there is no fix stop. But, I like to work with the WNEW as well. It is lightweight, but sturdy and looks also nice. Hi Dennis! I have got the incra 100hd miter. A very good and precise miter gauge. But: I‘m now with the third! degreescale, because the teeth are deforming when you do not be verrrrry careful. And everytimes with 0 and 1 degree! 😤 Thats why my first look was at the covered teeth of the scale.
    But with china tools: I got the heathgauge you recomended last week. Ok, it took about two moth to get delivered, no problem, but: I had to pay another 20€ of toll and fees, so in the end ist was a little more expensive than the same heath gauges at amazon. Not that I am a big friend of the american big players. But that are my last personal experience. I ordered also some other tool, some you recomended, others you didn‘t. My overall decision is to have a good look at your perfect and well made videos but also check if there aren‘t any other souces to get them, especial when they are of the same build.
    Best regards!

    I purchased the Hongdui Miter Guage after watching your review and I must tell you when I opened the box it looked like a excellent tool. But once I unpacked it and checked the accuracy I soon extremely disappointed. At zero degrees it was out 1/8 of an inch in 6 inches. I had to set it at 1 degree to get close to being square. Worse then that when I checked the 45 degree I actually had to set it in the opposite direction at 44 degrees. Hopefully this is a one off issue but makes me wonder if Hongdui can be trusted on their quality control. Still waiting to hear from Banggood so we will see what they say. Thoroughly enjoy your shows though!

      Is you miter slot accurately set parallel to your blade? If so, you can permanently adjust the angle with the Allen wrench. Also you might want to check both of the angle adjustments are both set flush with the base before the initial set up. Either way you can definitely dial this in perfect and have the dial to reflect that accuracy.
