Aunt Dorthy reminds me of a 76 or 77 Toyota Corolla wagon my grandparents had, it was even the same color. They used to pile us 8 grand-kids inside and we would go all over squeezed together like sardines. The thing that makes it even funnier is we weren't little kids. The oldest was around 14 or 15 and youngest was 7 or 8. It was still the best times ever. I eventually drove the wagon when I went to college.

In spite of their dubious heritage and lack of appeal to the American he-man, this company built a heck of a vehicle. At least back in the day. I was a mechanic for a living back then, and I always thought there was an element of revenge, because you could never get your hands into a lot of the small constricted areas without getting a cut.

I have enjoyed this. I has brough back sooooo many horrible memories. I had 75 710 wagon, same color... And it took forever to get it to run...compression checks, new ignition, plugs, wires. replaced fuel pump, filter...Finally got it running, only to have it turn off every 50 or so miles...turns out the fuel lines had rust in them and kept clogging. Also had bad rings. replace the rings and valve stem gaskets...Had not secured the timing chain tensioner and it had extended too far...top speed with malfunctioning tensioner was 50...eventially stretched the chain and bent 2 valves. Once replaced it ran great.
My 72 510 wagon we spent 3 months trying to figure out why the second set of points didn't fire...The we read the part in the chiltons about the 3rd gear switch and that they only fire in 3rd gear at a certain rpm.

I had one of these! Bought it for $600 bucks and it ran pretty well, sorta. It had some teeth missing on the flywheel and finicky carb. A few wacks with screwdriver handle fixed the carb ,(dirt or something), and big wrench would turn flywheel enough to let the starter engage. It was great on gas! My girl friend had to go live up in South Dakota at her Grandparents and I had job in Wichita. Yes, it was not good. So, used some vacation and drove a car, that shouldn't have been driven across town, and went 750 miles one way! I had bunch of tools and some spare parts and of a went! It was going fine until I got poured on by huge thunderstorm. Shorted out the alternator just about two hours from Rapid City. A guy stopped to help and actually towed me right to my girl's place! I bought him a twelve pack for his time. He would not take any money. I had borrow a hundred $100 from my girl friend to get home. It was all worth it! It all happen in the late 80s.

The carb was one of the biggest weaknesses for the L20B
    Factory Hitachi.
Webber conversion (that you have) is awesome.
    Runs 100 Times better.
    Used to have a 1979 620 Pickup.
Rebuilt the Engine and learned a lot about the L series engines.
    (L16, L18, L20).
These engines love to burn oil if you even think about poor oil changes.
Ring technology is much better with aftermarket parts.
Less of a problem if you happen to do a rebuild.
    That 710 makes me jealous.
Wish I was there helping you with it!
I haven't seen one that clean since 1995!

Had a 710 coupe, one owner for $600. She was basically concourse and the most reliable little car I've had. Traded her (parts were too rare) for a 260Z when that was still actually possible. This was 10 years ago.

@@PuddinsFabShop Yeah, I passed mine off to experienced hands. It's a complicated carburetor, but it is perfect when working at 100%. I had commented here that removing the idle mixture screw and the cuttoff solenoid and spraying out the passages would likely get the original Hatachi working and keep it smog ready among other reasons.

@@PuddinsFabShop These carbs are no more difficult than any other carb to rebuild, there's a screen in the fuel intake fitting that gets plugged, I'd take that carb apart and clean it out, likely wouldn't even need a rebuilt kit just a cleaning. I'd clean and try this carb before buying a Weber, I have one of those Weber 32/36 dgv on my 77 620 L20b datsun and I can't figure out the problem with it, spent $60 and rebuilt it and still can't resolve it's issue, mine is a real Weber not a chineseum carb, but I cannot fix it, those Webers are "good junk", I've read a whole bunch of comments about the Webers and one comment say there a good carb, and the next comment says there junk, I'm leaning towards the junk side, I'd just about trade you this Weber for that original Datsun carb!
