- Changing the crank sensor on your impala or anything with the 3800 series motor is pretty easy.
Things needed
1/4 by 28 bolts 3 in long with washers
harmonic balancer puller
24mm socket for pulley bolt
13mm socket to remove crank sensor
the whole trick is using those small bolts to hook up the pully to remove the harmonic balancer once thats removed its simple and easy to change.
with the p0336 code your car can have sudden stall outs, hard starts, and even the tach jumping around.

I had no idea there were threaded holes inside there! I've had the part for almost a year asking people for a "special puller". This video made it so easy! Thank you!
I've been fixing my 2005 Buick Lacrosse for ten years now always researching on you tube first. I must say this is one of the best repair videos I've seen. Your shots are great, content is short and to the point and easy for me to understand. I had to say thanks for making what seemed an impossible fix for me to do... less daunting to think about doing myself. Many thanks. I suspect that at some point you'll have millions of followers like others. Just keep doing what you do!
Thanks, Cody! Even years later you are still helping people, It is greatly appreciated and presented in a no nonsense format with great camera views...and yes, the elusive proper bolt sizing, too :-)
great Video;good lighting, great explanation, clear and simple.no camera shake & focused !Thanks !
@ 1:37 1/4" x 28 threads per inch, about 3" long, that's what I was wanting to know. :)
Thanks the whole video helped a lot.
Ditto! Couldn't find the bolt size in the motor manual. This covers the 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP as well.
That's incorrect. They are M6-1 x 75mm. 1/4"x28 will work but is technically incorrect.
@@knightdaleknights44 good to know Thanks.
Thank you for listing the bolt head sizes in the description! This came in handy as I had to grab tools from my shop and didn't have the car there. Lol
Just finished doing this job. Changed the sensor and seal. The OEM seal was much easier to install than the national one! The national one just bent out of shape lol. I couldn’t imagine doing this job with out an impact to get the balancer screw out! I used a Dewalt DCF899 got it out with no problem!
If GM would have had some good engineering, they would make the debris shield two piece and the trigger rings flat on the back of the pulley. The sensor would remove/install in line with the plug. This would eliminate having to remove the crank pulley. Great video though, thanks!
Lol agreed.
In the last several decades GM has had piss-poor engineering when it comes to sensors and electrical components. This is such a common issue I've replaced several of these crank position sensors on my '03 Grand Prix with the 3800 series II and 233k miles on the engine. Unfortunately, I'm replacing the crank position sensor once again this afternoon. My Crown Vic has over 430k miles on the engine and I've never had to replace a single sensor, computer or electronic controller of any kind. Ford's engines are definitely not as good as GM from a performance and efficiency standpoint but its sure nice to not have to constantly be messing with the supporting equipment for the motor - they just work.
Sadly, this will be the last GM product I will ever own and I come from a GM family. Doesn't matter if the engines are mechanically superior if the rest of the supporting components are garbage.
Another sore spot with me is the heater core and fan enclosed in that big black coffin under the dash, on some models, 6 or 10 hour job Grrrrrrr; then on others it is easily accessible from behind the glove box or through the fire wall.
7.25.15. The correct threads are M6 X 1.0 pitch X 70, 80, or 90mm long, depending on what harmonic balancer puller you have. I also used hex headed Allen bolts with 1/4 inch grade 8 washers. It helps if you spray lubricant in the threads first. Good video! 😎
Thank you! This is the most informative video I've seen. I'm just changing the hb but this was great.
Super video! Great explanation and great video angles and lighting!
Thanks for passing on the bolt size; hardest part of the whole procedure was finding that tidbit of info!!
Good vid man the bolt size helped me get er done. Thanks a bunch! My balancer was shot had ring of rubber missing and was making a horrible noise at low rpm's.
Cody the car guy: thanks for this excellent video, I referred to this vid when I changed my sensor; this time I am changing the Harmonic balancer. Clear concise and to the point. makes it easy to "git 'r' done" Best regards.
I have to say your video was very good Cody.. on installing crank shaft position sensor 3.8 v6 thanks again October 29/2017 Calgary Alberta Canada 🇨🇦
Nice work man the puller bolt size saved me alot ty!
Very good video. Nice and clear audio and straight forward and to the point. I see so many videos that the audio is so bad you can't understand them. Then their camera is all over the place and they want to give you the history of the automobile like your in 1st grade. anyway I will be doing the sensor on my uncles car tomorrow morning and I may watch your video once more just to make sure I have got it down. Thanks so much. From Keith in Reedley CA
Dude, that was awesome! Saved my ass on my Regal.
Thanks alot brother your video came in handy for me.
thank goodness i found this i thought this was gonna be so much harder to do than it really is! much appreciated
Thank you for the info on the bolt thread and length!!!!! That was really helpful. I have all the other info but had no way to get something into the pulley to check thread size. Without trying 50 different bolts.
Thanks Man
I've gotta do this job on my 94 Ciera 3.1 liter
This is called a 24x Crank Sensor in the GM Service Manual
Then there is a 3x crankshaft position sensor to replace on firewall side of the motor down from the exhaust manifold and just above the oil pan and drain plug a few inches. I sure hope it fixes my problems with the car hiccuping , stalling and running poorly
Already done the tune up side of it and ignition control module as well as camshaft position sensor
Did it ?
Thanks for the video. I'm doing the harmonic balancer on a 91 Cutlass Ciera 3300.
Cody,
I really appreciate you making such a fantastic video about this......some of these guys want to talk it to death, and I just need to get this shit done, right? you showed everything perfectly without the head swirling camera work.....I appreciate you brother.....you probably saved me many hundreds of dollars!.....any way I can help you on ANY woodworking projects from framing to trim to intricate trim.....I can do and am a very good instructor on all of this.
If only you was closer we would do some wood work on my boat ☺ thanks i try sometimes its harder than it looks to make a helpful how to video but i try .
Well said Ken, "without the head swirling camerawork" I will add no mountain dew guzzling or pizza munching... :)
@@CodytheCarGuy can you feel once its lined up an not aligned?
me and my buddy knocked mine out today my 1991 buick riveria has less that 90 k miles on motor so def plan to ride this for some years to come
Thanks bro this just saved my brother and I a lot of time.
Great Video easy to see thanks.
AWESOME, very helpful!
Awesome video ! thank you! Cody any insight how to change out the keyway need to do it to my 1999 buick regtal?
Great video, thankyou
Perfect video
Thanks brother great video very helpful and will use your information to finish one I'm doing now. Thanks again 👍
thanks brother , well done video
Thanks for the great vid! I did the procedure but now the car isn't starting. It started at the touch of the key before. Any ideas? Thanks Its a 99 park ave, supercharged
I am doing my harmonic on my 1990 98 regency tomorrow and hope it goes easy.
Thank you Cody
My 97 Lesabre series 2 is putting out a P0300 code so I will try this swap out. This looks like the culprit. Great Video 👉🏽
Was it the problem? Im having the same issue and this is about the only thing I haven't changed
great video
Thanks Cody
Thank you! !!!!! !!!!!!!!
Excellent video covered topics like can I use a standard 3 bolt puller, is an install tool needed, I've been seeing all kinds of nonsense online. Your video is Informative and easy to follow. But I only give it 4 stars. Lost a star when- You didn't start the car!! Maybe I ask too much like why doesn't you tube have ratings, like 1-5, like so many others do? Thanks for the video!
what do u put in the hole of the pully before u conect the pully tool?
Thank you man 🏆
I have a question about a 1997 buick Lesabre? when replacing the position sensor does it matter which posiion the harmonic balancer is to be installed? I noticed the balancer has a slot for a key. Does it require a key to inserted before installing again. Thanks, please Reply
greetings. I just pulled the balancer and the shaft looks bent. am I screwed? engine was running before I pulled the pulley.
I need help i got bolt out ok so the three bolts so do they have to be in certain 3 holes also hiw tight thise 3 bolts need to be and also once 3 bolts in with kit how far you rachet the kit
Good vid
Thanks for sharing!!
Appreciate all the Precise info...Definitely Helped on my 04 Chevy impala 3.8....Ooh and to get the Balancer bolt of without a impact....I seen I video that put the rachet on the bolt and start the engine...Great trick and worked like a charm🔥🔥🔥‼️‼️💪🏾
That's what I'm doing now
Great video. Does the PO 336 code guarantee the problem is the crank sensor? I did the harmonic balancer last summer but now it's in the very cold winter and I would like to make certain this is the problem before replacing parts.
Nice video easy to fallow.Question. the crankshaft censor malfunction always set up a code or check engine light?. Because my 3800 buick 93 swow up the maintenance engine requerid. It stalls and rpm is unestable. Electronic shop change ecm+cts.still the same any help thanks.
It is better if you do not use an impact wench on the puller. Yes ONLY use the steering wheel type puller. The impact shock can pull the 1/4x28 SAE threads out on the balancer or strip the bolts. The balancer only has a few threads in it so be gentle.SAE threads are shallow. Use a wrench on the puller and tap the center bolt on the puller with a small hammer.Turn the bolt in small increments and tap tap turn, tap tap etc.Be sure to loosen the puller center bolt and back off the crank bolt as you go to allow the pulley to pull out toward you.Take your time and you will have a better chance of not screwing things up.If you have the
Super Charged engine you will need 4 1/2 " bolts. I found only at Lowes some 5 1/2" 1/4x20 bolts and I cut the threads at the end off and ran a 1/4x28 die down about 1/2". Run the bolts down to bottom out in the dampener and snug up to just not too tight. Put a couple flat washers under the heads on the three puller bolts and you are good to go.
Would it matter how I put the crank pulley back. I think I put mine a few degrees off. Is there marks on there or it does not matter how I put it back on?
i got a 1991 buick park avenue does the brand matter. i know on my dads 08 silverado it required a dorman or it wouldent fire for the fuel voltage controler. i got a $18 one from ebay and it very lightly skimmed inbetween the fins. probably not an exact fit.
Did you have the insert that slides in where the harmonic balancer bolt goes? Or did you use something else for the center bolt of the puller to push against?
M O S T excellent! Terrific tutorial. Thank you sir indeed. ['94 Buick Regal 3.8L / L27]
Can i turn the pulley when i get the belt off so i could put the puller on and take the pulley off?
Do you need to do a case relearn, or is clearing the codes enough?
What if there is oil puddling behind that seal, and oil caked all over including the sensor... Would that cause the sensor to stop working? And does that mean the leak is deeper towards the timing belt?
thanks for the great vid. I changed my CPS and now I'm getting intermittent rpm to 0. Any idea as to what is causing it?
it could be the Camshaft sensor that was bad as well...Thats wy its a good idea to change both, the Camshaft and cranksaht sensor..they are both next to each other underneath the Pulley..
My balancer puller(like the one in the video) It has a pointed tip that you put on the end of the puller screw. Is the pointed tip not used on the 3800 v6 balancer??
Just did this repair after car being down with no spark for a week. Everything went well and the car fired right up, however now I have a clicking, rattling noise at idle RPM. I have to drive 1100 miles tomorrow, could I get a quick answer on what to check? Seems fine but the rattling wasn't there before and don't want to screw anything up. Thanks!
I have an 03 chevy impala police car and I think your video is great but on mine there's 2 lines coming out of the oil filter housing that are preventing me from removing the crank pulley any suggestions?
Nice vidio
So when putting the sensor back in does it gotta be lined up a certain way I got a 94 regal 3.8l
What keeps the pulley from spinning when turning the draw bolt?
What do you mean "has made contact with the bolt, now back it off"? the draw bolt would just come right back out with the pulley still tightly installed.
Did you install a spacer before the draw bolt?
Is this why my car, a Grand Prix 2008, has no sparks on any of the ignition coils?? I already replaced them including the module and I still have same problem. The car runs for a bit, but then dies again. I don’t know when it is going to start again or for how long it will run. I checked -and the fuel system is ok. So please any suggestions. I would appreciate it! Thanks 🙏
Where would I access the CPS on a 98 Firebird 3.8 v6? Any tips? And what did you mean about aligning the keyway?
They're identical to this engines location
Would the crank sensor produced multiple cylinder misfire?
Our 2007 Grand Prix keeps stalling. "Ignition failure due to electronic throttle control" message. Changed out some bad grounds & battery terminals. New throttle body & still happening. Wires are all good. Ya think this will fix it?
Can hitting a curb cause a bad CPS on these cars - 2005 Impala?
Quick question for you. Do you not need a feeler gauge to check clearance for the new sensor? Thx.
ita a good idea to change the Camshaft sensor as well while your in there...Its on the top left side of the harmonic balancer..you can see it when you removed the Pulley.
And that belt lol. Looks horrible
So I get p300 random misfire code. Changed plugs and wires, ignition module, injectors. Still running like garbage. Will the crank sensor through a code right away or can it cause this issue without a code? Coils are fine... fuel pressure good... but can't figure out why it's still miss firing.
I'm having stalling issues on my 03 Bonneville after cleaning and washing the engine which I regret doing. Can the Crank Sensor fail do to this?
Yes. Did you replace it? Was the issue fixed?
Not sure about the series II but the series III you have to do a case relearn which can or cannot be done with some scan tools
It can also be done without a scan tool but the procedure looked a major pain in the ass
perfect right up to the point where you cleared the codes. what if you don't have one of those code clearer thingies? can you just disconnect the battery? thanks
yup chaki start it up and drive it around it should clear itself
Yes, you can disconnect battery
Great video! Gonna try this fix today. By the way, what's a key-way?
its a slot on the balancer 3:11, the crank has a raised spot, or key. this way the balancer can only go on 1 way and keeps its from spinning on the crank.
Great work sir. Very clear simple appreciate you!
How did you determine the sensor was bad? I have a 92 olds the engine starts then dies. I thought it might be the fuel pump but it seems to work. Once it starts I can not accelerate it will die.
Any insight of my problem world be appreciated
Thanks
Cody i have a question ? If u change out the hermonic balancer do U need to change out the keyway? I'm having a problem with my 99 buick regal , changed out the crank sensor and the hermonic balancer still have a P0336 check engine lite on?
Check crank and cam sensors or you could have a faulty ignition control module.. these cars can start off the cam sensor if the pcm is still receiving the sync pulse. Ignition and fuel injector timing will be a default amount though.. so you could still have a bad crank sensor or wire in the plug.. also crank and cam sensors connect to the ignition control module, the module has 6 wires that go-to the pcm, 1 wire the pcm uses to tell the ignition module to stop controlling spark and listen to the spark signal the pcm is sending it via the 2nd wire. And the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th wires the ignition module is sending the pcm what the crank and cam sensor signals are . With a scan tool you can see the rpm of each sensor.. the 3800 is also known for the ring on the back of the harmonic balancer to come loose, which could cause a miss or faulty sensor reading. So make sure the bolts that hold the ring to the back of the harmonic balancer are right . So if the ignition module is bad it could be telling the pcm there is no crank signal even though it is receiving one, also you could have an issue with the wires between the crank sensor and ignition module, or between the ignition module and pcm.. there are no other causes
@@markborrmannjr thanks
Is the 95 3800 2 the same as the 04 3800 3 cps
Hello, thank you and God bless for this repair presentation concerning the crankshaft sensor. I thought yours was the best, although you miss a VITAL piece to add in installing the harmonic balancer puller which is insert a PUSH ROD into the harmonic balancer bolt hole to assists in removing the harmonic balancer.
What puller is that
Will a bad sensor throw a code (check engine light) ?? I've been having stalling issues lately but the car does start right back up. Sometimes does take a few try's No check engine light on tho
For my '96 Park Avenue, it threw an ignition code.
Glow Oxide I changed the crank sensor and it fixed the issue. 00' Grand Prix GT
yes po330 code
TJ CRIM my impala was going through that .
I have this problem with the 99 Buick regal, i changed out the Sensor AND Relucter Ring all new dealer ship parts ! Check engine light still on ? Anybody have a clue what i can do here? Thanks for posting this Video Cody i was able to do this all my self!
what size bolts are used on that puller to get it off
1/4 x 28 found them in one of the specialty fastener drawers at home depot.
pretty good video...pretty much :)
I have a Series I 3800 Engine and the threaded holes in the Crank Pulley are offset so the bolts have to really go in crooked to pull the balancer off..... it looks like they would have made the holes in the Crank Pulley straight on so it'd be easier to put a puller on....
What if I don't have the codes but intermittent crank no start and engine shuts off while I'm driving?
Great job Cody.
Did you use an ac Delco unit or which one
List of tools needed?
not even with Snap On Blue Point would mine come off. I'm gonna have to try your angle iron idea. I did have to buy longer bolts because the ones that came with my kit were to short and I needed 3 not just 2 that were in my kit. This car is a headache 2000 LeSabre
Does this sensor, play a major part in the power the car gets . My impala wouldn’t pick up speed . I changed the spark plugs , wires , filter. Mass intake air flow Sensor. $$$ that shit didn’t make a difference. Camshaft sensor , egr valve . Hopefully I said that right . My car was ugh. That valve cost damn near 200 .
Yes it can BUT so can a clogged fuel filter, clogged cat, low fuel pressure, heck i have seen a bad air filter smother an engine before.
Did it Start?
98 grand prix gt P0336 so I changed the CPS ran good for a day code came back shop said replace the harness replaced the harness Code came back so I replaced everything that went with the system: ignition module/coils/computer/harness/cam & crank sensor all ac delco/Delphi parts & code came back , b4 car would no start or start then stall when I would "wiggle"the harness at the coil pack .it runs good no stall no shaking, fires in less than a seconds ona cold day , CEL is just on please help 117k miles
you must have one with a special long middle bolt as mine didn't work only got it 90%off
You cant really ask for a better tutorial than that.
I removed the balancer nut by using a breaker bar wedged against the frame and bumped the engine.
TO day I replaced the crankshaft sensor. Loosened the balance bolt by wedging the breaker bar against the frame also bumped the starter and this worked will. Saw this being done on a you tube video. Cody the car guy video was a big help. Thanks Cody
I've also done this on a few cars. Too poor for Snap-on. :(. But this is a great tip for those struggling with a breaker bar.
Would this be the cause of no spark in my coils..
No
