"It's no wonder you think like this. You have a tricky brain that evolved for survival. Not happiness." Hearing that hit me like a freight train at full speed. I've never heard it phrased like that before.
I never heard musterbation but another good one I heard is "shoulding all over yourself". So when I catch myself using should statements I remember "Hey! Stop shoulding all over yourself!" Imagining a stop sign when you say this to yourself is also helpful.
Lately I've fallen off exercising regularly and I've been wondering why I just can't stick to moving my body on a regular basis. There's a lot of external factors, of course, but most importantly, it's my mindset. I'm so often telling myself what I SHOULD be doing, I never stop to ask myself what I want to be doing. And I DO want to exercise. Somehow that simple reframe of exercise as something I do want to do made it so so much easier to do. Instead of trying to force myself to do something because I "should," it's so much more helpful for my brain to find the reason I want to do it, even if it's hard or unpleasant in the short term.
Hey, thanks for sharing this. Ive been doing the “I should really exercise” thing a ton too. It really helps to know that some one else is working through this mindset too. Good luck friend, we can do this! I don’t know how, but we will.
For me, it’s about sticking to a schedule. Can’t do the workout if I am not there. So then I have to schedule all the other things that are interfering with my time. Having done this, I realize that for me, no longer basing my actions on what I feel like doing. I show up at the right place at the right time. I’ll just complete the task. Doesn’t have to be the greatest work out either. I can just say I’m maintaining.
I slipped and fell in the shower almost two weeks ago and hurt my lower hamstring. The dr told me I can’t lift weights for at least two weeks and it’s been so depressing. The gym is one of the best thing and big part of my life. I do it for stress release and also lifestyle/aesthetics. I’m addicted to consistency and good physical habits.
The amount of work, creativity, and not to forget, studying that goes behind creating these quality videos is massive. Thank you for putting in the work Anna, this is brilliant.
Metacognitive therapy (MCT) has been much more helpful to me than CBT. I used to ruminate constantly and it made me, well, miserable. It sounds ridiculously simple, but Detached Mindfulness is the best technique I know, and I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from generalized anxiety.
What better way to exercise detached mindfulness, than being helpful to other people. I myself care less about the outcome When I go into it focused on how others will benefit and where my benefit is not readily obvious but entirely intangible.
3:06 emotional reasoning is so often “my truth” and used to present people’s feelings and perceptions as facts. My doesn’t equal The truth and it’s a really damaging distortion to our society when we do this at large and make judgements based purely on people’s feelings or experiences. Feelings and experiences are valid, but they are distortions based on self perception and information gathered. They are important to acknowledge but are not the the main decision making factor..
I don't usually comment but omfg this is the first time of me hearing about CFT even though I've been in therapy for years and have practically mastered CBT at this point. I'm so stoked to bring this up with my therapist during my next session THANK YOU! 🤗
I think that Anxiety = caution + a reaction. Sometimes people only focus on the ‘caution’ part of their anxiety, by trying to not have anxious thoughts in the first place. But I think that it’s usually better to focus on the reaction, since that usually allows for more agency. For example, say your ‘reaction’ is pessimism. As an alternative, you might say that it’s ok to acknowledge there are roadblocks/pitfalls to account for (caution)-but that you’ll also try to stop assuming that those hindrances will *automatically* cause you to fail. (Of course, other courses of action would need to be applied to other types of reactions, such as overcompensations & compulsions.)
Haven't check Anna K. content in a while (like more than a year or 2) and BOY the scripting/writing quality WENT UP, wow !! It was already good back then but BOI. The delivery, pace and informational level is on point on every aspect. Filming and editing too (but those were already perfect from what I remember) Content seems much more relevant and researched also (to me, at least). Congrats on the evolution !
Donald Hoffman reached the same conclusion that our brains are designed for survival rather than accuracy, through a lot of mathematical models and computer simulations. I am fascinated that 2 unrelated scientific fields reached the same conclusion from a different path. Because of his conclusions we are at the verge of redefining our most fundamental physics models.
Anna, I have been watching your videos since I was 13 years old and found them so helpful back then. Now that I am a young adult I still see your videos as therapeutic and they always make me feel understood ❤️ thank you
The more I watch videos like yours, the more I learn the things I've been doing and fighting against have names. Means I'm still on the right path. Thank you.
I have subjected myself to these thinking traps from time to time. But I think overall I'm functioning with a pretty positive grasp of reality. Thank you Anna! Your content is priceless!
wrote all the actions down, and i ticked most of the boxes. im going to set a boundry to myslelf now that i want to take control of thoes unconcious thinking.
So glad I resubcribed to Annas channel on my new account. Her matter of fact unpacking of topics strongly reinforces the work I put in irl. Thank you everyone who helped birth this out unto the internet. 🙏🏾
See, all of my therapists have said that; "ask yourself what evidence you have that this thought is true" But that on itself makes no sense. if someone had explained to me the way Anna did, it would be SO MUCH BETTER.
I love that my therapist just told me to look more into cognitive distortions and I get on RUclips and see this. THANK YOU. Also, all your tops are so cute, like youre so cute!!
Dr Burns is kind of incredible. They have a podcast the feeling good podcast and it’s been so helpful listening in on real sessions with people who are very depressed and in one instance a terminally ill patient. It’s like a simplified user manual for the brain and depression. Very very much worth a listen.
One thing to keep in mind is that this interpretation is extremely neurotypical and normative e.g. the establishment decides what is "normal" and "healthy" and, well, the establishment is usually wrong in the long run.
After a several intense sessions of me unloading everything one by one, my therapist took a minute and instead of starting to give me solutions to my issues, he just handed me a copy of this at the end of one session and asked me to go through it when I feel like it. And boy oh boy, now when I think about it, this was the beginning of the help I needed. Now, I feel much more aware of things. Thanks to all the patient therapists who know when to help!
in the end you live your live within your paradigma, core beliefs etc, these can slowly become more negative or degrade. To update, positively reinforce, replace elements of that system, you first need to realise that it exists and can change. Most people are set in their ways, and will only change in crisis. Severe depression I think is when the paradigma breaks and is not replaced.
Just regarding thought processes, the most difficult to answer are McQs, then also biased and unbiased news and then fake news and information manipulation is also tricky because organizations work with futures and opinion and others with past and sometimes they push the false negatives and false positives and various hypothesis which is sometime difficult to differentiate raw truths and or facts from opinion and wants, needs, desires, and the motivation to change information that’s convenient not to debate and or argue 😊
thank you thank you anna for your relatable and "simplified " version of what i am learning in therapy right now, what a coincidence, she makes it make so much sense!!!
There was a time in my life when I never related to these tyoes of videos Anna made and I just watched em for fun. Stopped for a whike and now Im back again and now suddenly Im doing EVERYTHING SHE SAYS I SHOULDN'T Guess I should take her advice now instead of continuing like this.
I see an eccentric genius with a versatile mind and a wicked sense of humor. I bet you're lots of fun discussing ideas with. I love your videos Anna. Keep up the great work :)
Anna you are such a gem. I can definitely relate to this. Catching thinking traps and breaking them down and challenging them is definitely not un easy task for me. up until now I am still trying to work my way through it. It feels comforting knowing that you share this kinds of content. It is indeed substantial and very valuable. Thank you. 🥰
How do you tell someone who is so obviously and overtly messed up that they need help. Their cognitive distortion keeps justifying their behavior and the bad stuff there too to others
I've watched your videos for years (had to make a new account though as my old one was lost T T), and I found this really interesting. For me, personally, having been through CBT helped a lot, but so did DBT. DBT combined with it just made a world of difference. PS, I had no idea you were into Genshin? You slayed as Mona.
Burns book was very important to me during grad school, and I'm grateful to you for talkomg about CBT. I first read his original 📖 (1979) and then a revised edition (1999). I am more into mindfulness now, bit CBT is still helpful to many people.
"It's no wonder you think like this. You have a tricky brain that evolved for survival. Not happiness."
Hearing that hit me like a freight train at full speed. I've never heard it phrased like that before.
this is becoming slowly my weekly therapy session and I'm grateful.

You are not alone
Me too

“How many people have you killed?”
“Clearly not enough.” Not gonna lie, this got a chuckle out of me

Detached Mindfulness sounds interesting. I definitely dwell on like the smallest things and blow them up 😅
Why is it better for you?
Any links you found helpful?

You made me google it, thank you

Yeah this is basically my entire therapy sessions. I focus on my negatives, downgrade my accomplishments, and have lots of "should's" for myself.
I don't usually comment but omfg this is the first time of me hearing about CFT even though I've been in therapy for years and have practically mastered CBT at this point. I'm so stoked to bring this up with my therapist during my next session THANK YOU! 🤗
You look really stylish, love your outfit

This channel is a goldmine for people seeking to improve their lives and understand themselves better!
Anna - a therapist who doesn't see herself as one, yet the best one out there!

i'm not crying you're crying
lmaooo that “HEY” at 2:13 got me dead bro

3:40 - for clarity, "should have" loops are way more toxic than "should"s, which can be, depending on context, quite healthy.
Thanks for this powerful research translation Anna! I'm doing schema therapy at the moment and it has *changed* my life
I really don't think I could love Anna or her content more. She (and her therapist lol) has helped me sooooooooo much. Thank you Anna!!!
your wardrobe is unbelievably pretty and suits you amazingly
I have subjected myself to these thinking traps from time to time. But I think overall I'm functioning with a pretty positive grasp of reality. Thank you Anna! Your content is priceless!
Went through cog therapy and group. Was so effective in letting go of guilt!
5:26 - 5:36 When you already know because you watched too many School of Life videos 😂
wrote all the actions down, and i ticked most of the boxes. im going to set a boundry to myslelf now that i want to take control of thoes unconcious thinking.
Love you. This is wonderful. Makes a difference in my life and the lives of my family

Anna - Thank you for your wisdom and humor and being who you are. Fan of 8 years!
Taking a class on emotions and well-being here.
That should statement really hits home.
this is better than all of the therapists I've had

But that on itself makes no sense. if someone had explained to me the way Anna did, it would be SO MUCH BETTER.
I needed this more than you know. I’ve been looking for answers on why I behave in certain ways. So thank you!!

I've rewound to 2:55 at least 10 times
That editing at the end of the segment had me crying🤣
Anna, you literally explained the key to inner happiness and piece 😌
One thing to keep in mind is that this interpretation is extremely neurotypical and normative e.g. the establishment decides what is "normal" and "healthy" and, well, the establishment is usually wrong in the long run.
You are so great, Anna x
Thanks Anna 😭😭😭 I figured out that these were the things making me miserable, but I didn't know how to fix them. This really helped 💜
We sabotage each other thinking in facts

Just the sort of eye-opener someone with anxiety and dysthymia like me could use. Owe ya one.
Mental filter, disqualified positive, magnification, mislabeling... Hit a little close to home.... Uh oh. I know what I am going to be working on

loved this! thank you, Anna!
OOUFF This is powerfully and entertainingly informative ♥️
How do you tell someone who is so obviously and overtly messed up that they need help. Their cognitive distortion keeps justifying their behavior and the bad stuff there too to others
I appreciate the quality of our videos. Thanks!
2 minutes in and I'm already relating hard. "I'm a bad person and you abusing me says something about myself" ouch 💔
I've watched your videos for years (had to make a new account though as my old one was lost T T), and I found this really interesting. For me, personally, having been through CBT helped a lot, but so did DBT. DBT combined with it just made a world of difference.

I'm a therapist and I'm pretty sure Anna knows more than me
