Feel free to subscribe and like the video if you enjoyed the content! I made a mistake saying the Surface Pro 8 doesn't have TB4 but it does. Also, if you missed it I reviewed the Surface Laptop 5 which you can find here - ruclips.net/video/umfkgruJSQc/видео.html
That's why you buy Surface pro 9 5G. Doing the same productivity task, but never get hot, longer battery lifetime, better camera with voice performance and always connected to the internet.
I still like it. Better battery life, easier access to remove the SSD, and it still keeps the phenomenal display. The underperformance for video editing is fine since most SP 9 users are traveling salespeople, college students majoring in finance/economics, and financial analysts looking for a super lightweight laptop.
Are there any paperlike screen protectors for surface? I want to move from Galaxy Tab S8 to Surface because of full Windows experience and mainly because of OneNote but I like added friction on Galaxy Tab with screen protector.
Thanks for video. It helped me
I have no idea how you got 12 hours of battery life out of the SP8, while i am getting like 4-5 at best out of my SP7 while taking notes in class at 50-55% brightness and airplane mode on.
3:38 that's actually a good camera!
nice review 🙂
cleared up some doubts I had.
I like the Microsoft Surface Pro products and get what you say regarding the need to strike the right balance between performance, thermal envelope, and fan noise. I currently have a M1 12.9-inch iPad Pro with 2TB and magic the keyboard. The hardware and performance are fantastic, but even with the iPad OS 16.1 the operating system cripples what the device can do, such that every time I use it, I feel it's just an oversized iPhone constrained to run smart phone apps. I like to imagine what a Surface Pro could become with a M series class processor. Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long this, providing Qualcomm and ARM can resolve their licensing dispute following Qualcomm's acquisition of Nuvia. Then we will have new higher performance ARM processors available for Windows PCs, designed by the ex-Apple Silicon engineers who were responsible for the M1 processor, and possibly a Surface Pro that complete with Apple's latest iPad Pro / MacBook Air products. When that happens, I will replace my iPad Pro for a Surface Pro so I have an all-round tablet PC capable of running desktop class apps and not just an oversize iPhone!
Absolutely agreed. I’d trade my ipad pro for the surface at any moment it gets the same kind of performance. Too bad for the ipad that it’s crippled by the os.
Unfortunately ARM chip architecture cannot run full x86 and x64 Windows
So bad news even if ARM releases M2 level performance it won't run all windows programs.
All iPad Pro’s, even the A- series chips, are basically 1000hp racecars produced and made available for the general public, but Apple locked the car to go no faster than 90km/h
Hi Mann, really interested to know how you would evaluate this now as apple has made the ipadOS better over the last few months. I am stuck in between to choose from ipad and surface pro. Thanks.
They did it!
Didn't the Surface Pro 8 have Thunderbolt already? I just got mine a few weeks back (I decided to go for the "old" one when they announced the 9 would no longer have a headphone jack.) but I could swear it's got Thunderbolt 4 ports as well...
you are correct surface pro 8 does have it. I should of double checked. I was assuming it didn't since the surface laptop 4 didn't have it. I'll pin a comment.
@@MatthewMoniz Mistakes happen, it's still a good video, keep up the great work!
Surface Pro 8 has Thunderbolt 4. As for battery life, was the test between the Pro 8 and the Pro 9 using the same refresh rate (60, or 120)? Thanks!
what is that Diary app you are using to take notes? i cant find it in the store
I think they should use all AMD 6000 series in this with usb4 that would give a boost in cpu and gpu.
I'm trying to decide surface pro 9 or Lenovo 9i ? any suggestions youtube ?
Can you give a link about that info that Microsoft have released the schematics of Surface design?
Can u compare it with the Samsung Galaxy book 360
Hello, planning on purchasing an SP9 i7 16gb ram....how loud are the fans and how frequently do they start up on normal work load??? Thanks!
did you get one? I'm looking at the same one but worried about heat and fan noise
It would have been nice if you also included a head to head comparison of the Pro 9 i5 and i7 version just to see if there's sufficient performance benefits to spend for the extra i7 "name". Value is the name of the game in any purchasing decision. Am I paying for hype, or is it really useable. I did find the benchmark useful, as I was consider the Acer swift edge with the Ryzen 7 6800 new gen processors, and it seems Intel still has an edge on single core, but I wonder how the battery life would compare between the Ryzen 7 6800u vs the Intel i7 1255u & the i5 1235u on the Pro 9. Those are metrics that will and do matter. A agpu comparison would also be insightful between 6800 gen vs 12 gen Intel Iris X
Which did you end up going with?
I bought the base model I5
And are you happy with it?
@@timebandit1266how is the i5 please lmk
@@Joel.15 I ended up staying with i5, since with heat and throttling, i7 gains very little, just bragging rights
my SP7 dies after 2.5 hours using just a single edge window watching videos or other light use, I'm currently trying to get it replaced my MS, but wondering what you do on your SP8 and 9 than gets them 12 and 10 hours.
They don't get that. it's horseshit. These are essentially paid ads and are reviewed for MS. If you want to get the most out of your battery: Keep battery saver mode on 24/7, use the power saver power plan, use 60 Hz refresh rate, keep brightness under 45-50%, don't use bluetooth, when you don't have to, same with WiFi but that's obviously not something you can do most of the time. Don't keep keyboard/pen attached if you don't need to use it. Remove/Uninstall/Disable things that do things in the background, make it so things aren't constantly refreshing/updating. Try and use the 80-20 rule, don't let the device go below 20 and try to unplug it around 80, keeps it healthier longer. Doing all that, I get 6 MAYBE 7 hours only web browsing. Nobody has or ever will get 10 hours. If they say that, they're lying.
@@1zxtv I get roughly 13 hours of web browsing in edge with a ryzen 5 5500u cpu
What's your thoughts on the new Asus ZenBook 14?
That sapphire color is beautiful
The default battery setting limits the charge at 80% to keep its healthy in Surface Pro 9 (I don't know if it's same in v8, since I don't have it) . I hope you change it before testing it.
Yup! it was 100% before I did the battery test
Thanks for this, as this was litterally my question on another video yesterday.
what app did he use to write on?
So I also noticed theSP8 I5 and I7 with 16 GB ram and 256 are same price. Can you see any reason to ge the I5 over the I7???
If its the same price just get the I7
@@MatthewMoniz Thanks, moving up from a pro 5 or 6, don't remember. But pen input is really important for me.
i feel the new keyboard for SP9 is a lot better to type on than SP8's. On the flip side, the new CPU drains more battery than SP8.
why there is no 2 in 1 laptop like vaio z canvas now..
surface pro 8 also has thunderbolt 4 , but you said it doesnt.
thanks for the honest review
I looked at an SP8 and wasn't pleased that they put the power button on the side, as i could see that getting bumped easily just trying to handle it so I'm glad they moved it back to the top like it was on most other Surface tablets. Your battery life comment surprised me though as I thought the 12th processors (which the Pro 9 uses) were more power efficient. Kind of making me think I should stick with an 8 since they removed the headphone jack and the SSD is actually a little more secure (requires the pin to access) and the graphics appear to be slightly better (although not by much, maybe 10% better). The only thing I Don't care for is the power button positioning but a case might also help prevent accidental button presses.
My Sp9 (i7 process) runs very hot. 😢 So sad... disappointing....Anyone with any advice?
As a Surface Pro 8 user, I'm actually surprised that people are getting more than 5.5 hours out of battery life. I usually only do normal browsing and productivity things, which shouldn't be drinking up all the juice but to my surprise it does. How are you guys doing it?
I had the Surface Pro 4 and it was a battery drainer for the benefit of a good display. I actually downgraded the display to 1080p with Dell Latitude 7420. I gained far more battery life. I'll leave the 4k for my home tv.
Nice video - seems both Microsoft and Apple are just offering spec. bumps on their top line of tablets this year.
Hi there MM, mad respect from India, here the i5 and the i7 models are separated by a whopping premium of $500, although I am not a very power hungry user, or a content creator, just a researcher....still when I do research, I can have in excess of 20 tabs open and a few excel, word and Pdfs open... I have an Xbox and hence gaming is not a need at all with this device....I still rock a MacBook Pro i5 8th Gen with Touch Bar, which seems to be failing on me anytime soon, it has gotten sluggish especially after the latest Ventura Update, I am done with Macs and I always wanted a surface for the longest time I remember.....although getting an M1 or an M2 makes a lot of sense, I am asking you honestly, If I were to switch to a Surface, would this be a good year to do so...? I am eyeing the i5 12th intel model with the keyboard and pen that costs roughly $1800....Please Advise!
What did you do?
2:06 SP 8 has two TB4 port too.
The 9 series feels like going a step backwards. Great products but hard to justify the price/performance.
First time?
That's was always the problem with the previous ones. Especially because it didn't come with the keyboard cover and pen.
I wanted to upgrade from the SP7 to the SP8 but the changes were minimal and now its the same from 8 to 9 :D i think i keep my 7 for a bit longer
@@philipschmitd6854 I cannot understand why people want to change their devices when the old one stil working and somewhat uo to date.
@@julian-io5wl Because we want to.
New models usually have a ton of quality-of-life changes, better performance (even if marginally), and are overall superior. Why should i keep an outdated model, when i'm able to afford the new one? Dropping couple of hundreds of dollars on a new Surface once a two years is nothing, because i use them all the time for work. And on top of that, the old ones sell really easily when a new model is announced.
tl;dr: Why settle for less, when you can have more?
sp8 has thunderbolt 4 aswell
Just bought the i7 16gb ram sp9. Can’t wait to set it up! My previous computer was an m2 air… I just didn’t like Mac OS
has it been getting really hot with loud fans? looking to get one but people seem to be complaining about that. I'm hoping a silent majority aren't having the same issues
Please help review the Minisforum V3
Do you like this pen better than Samsung S Pen ? Please let me know
yes i do
12h BATTERY LIFE with Surface Pro 8? What was that? 60 Hz, 10% brightness, Sound Off, No Task at all? I got with i7 and 16 Gb: 5 hours with 60 Hz and 50% brightness, doing Office Tasks. I don't believe those Numbers. And any SP8 User I interact to, claims the same as me: SP8 BATTERY LIFE time already was a SHAME.
PC Mark Modern Office battery test. Combines lots of idle time ,office work and conference calls. It's not perfect but better then the nonsense wifi tests that other sites use. Battery life is tough to get right since everyone uses their laptops differently.
@@MatthewMoniz Then maybe clarify that you are using a 3rd party benchmark. Omitting such crucial info makes your videos seem very untrustworthy.
If I had to guess, the SP9 should get about *4h of battery life* (doing what it's designed to do, which is using the stylus). Or at least, that's the kind of honest truth you should be delivering to your audience.
There is zero chance of getting close to 12hrs on my SP8 doing a mixed basic workflow. I get 5-6hrs so I wish YT would stop doing benchmarks as they are fixed to favour the OEM. I mean even the SP9 benchmarks was seen here to mean nothing despite higher scores than the SP8.
@@andyH_England no one is favouring the OEM . There’s just not a good way to test battery life since everyone uses their laptop differently. The worst is the wifi run down tests. I use pc mark modern office test which uses idle time, office work and conference calls. It’s not perfect but there is no perfect battery test
@@MatthewMoniz That is the way I use it, and for the life of me, I can never get 12hrs on my SP8! Usually half that. It is very misleading as it always paints a rosy picture. It must be on low brightness, 60Hz on a stable wifi, not out and about as most people use their devices. Anyway, people reading this, good luck getting 12hrs without using loads of power-saving settings.
Was looking to upgrade but this was a downer. Those thick bezels are not acceptable. Microsoft needs to slim those down asap for the next reiteration. Plus, battery life needs to be longer. Performance, Microsoft, performance.
Anyone's got the wallpaper shown in the thumbnail?
What is the name of the app that appears at 4:04 min

Surface pro 8 also has Thunderbolt 4, please correct me if I'm wrong
You are not wrong! I pinned a comment when the video was released.
Man can you please tell me why there is no review of the G16 dell i9 12th gen 3070ti 32gb ram 1tb ssd laptop and how would this laptop compare to an Alienware with the same specs as the G16 or one with a lower spec Alienware to the G16 would you get The same performance or not
I've been happy with the SP8 (Core i5, 8, 128), which I bought specifically for travel. It's great, but noticeably slower than my older Lenovo Yoga Core i7. I only use the SP8 for MS Office, web browsing, and streaming during travel. I still prefer my Galaxy Tab as a browsing and streaming powerhouse now that I'm retired and don't need MS Office while traveling.
Completely disappointed with both the Pro 9 and the Laptop 5 - they're not even an upgrade on their previous models! 1 step forward 2 steps back for microsoft atm
My surface pro 4 i7 was unusable. It would overheat in 15 minutes
I use my Surface Pro 6 to edit photos and videos.
We need a new laptop studio
they need to switch this product to use the new AMD Phoenix APUs. Better GPU performance and better power usage.
If only this had an Apple M1/M2 chip in it. On the one hand you have Microsoft unlocking the software and letting you do whatever you want with it (a tablet running full windows 11) but being held behind by the power guzzling Intel chips and on the other hand you have Apple with performance for days on their M series chips but locking their iPad Pros down to crappy iPadOS. Both sides you have a heavy trade off; just depends on which one you prefer to give up I guess.
SQ4 should have the same performance as m1. SQ3 on the other hand has enough amount of power to run apps without lags...I bought the 5G and I love it. It has amazing battery lifetime with 120hz, good performance, always connected to the internet and great camera performance.
TY Very much
Think this would be good for just an average college student?
wifi 6e was the reason i chose pro 9
such cool stuff
But the Surface Pro 8 does come with Thunderbolt 4, doesn’t it? The 9 has the WiFi advantage coming with 6E rather than just 6.
Surface Pro 8 already has 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports!!!
Yes I know I pinned a comment.
we must wait inter 13gen.... 12gen 13 gen is completely different, and... next surface 10 will have big different with 9
I'm coming from the surface pro 3. Is it worth upgrading or should I wait another year Plus sometimes I get a black screen when I turn the machine on Is that it indication that the Machine might be going down Just you're thoughts thank you.
I have something special for you☝
BestBuy still exists?
great video
its battery life is not 15 hours as previously advertised. wow
The 8 does have thunderbolt
I love this format factor and windows. Unpopular suggestion: Learn by apple how to squeeze in more performance and less heat and better battery life. How long is that gonna take?
Matthew you didn't actually tell us the battery life of the new one...
I did it’s in the video
Does the display support HDR?
No. HDR requires either OLED or MiniLED.
Intel and Intel again… why not AMD in surface pro? Or studio?
That’s a question for Microsoft. But I think amd would be better for the surface laptop
It is sad that most of reviewers point out performance as the most important feature. I wish that outstanding battery life and latency would be the most important features put front and center, with reasonable performance (Apple M1 like performance is likely enough for most people doing basic use of their device (web surfing, video streaming, office,…)
Thunderbolt 4 plus EGPU == game over
I just don't get Microsofts pricing on this stuff.... Default 1 year warranty for business on a $1400 device? $249 to upgrade to 3 years? $279 for a keyboard/cover? Another $130 for a pen? Seriously?
Can you compare the Pro 9 with 5G to the Pro X please. Everyone is comparing Pro 9 to Pro 9 with 5G. Which is a very different review. Those of us with the Pro X know it's Pros and Cons. Thanks.
i keep the 7,, no fan and a headphone jack
Ipad pro m2 or surface pro 9? Which great choice for travelling?
I had Surface Pros before and the comparison with iPads are not ideal, even though the similar form factors make it tempting. These devices are much closer to a MacBook Air, since both run desktop OSes with full browsers and desktop apps.
That said, if you need to work while traveling, the Surface Pro 8 with LTE is a very nice option. If not, the iPad Pro with LTE will be a much better companion. Don't bother with the Surface Pro 9 as the 5G version is ARM and performs really bad (see Engadget's review) and the Intel don't offer any kind of cellular connectivity (and if you don't care, you can get the Pro 8 way cheaper)
@Mohammed Mesum Hussain what if he needs better apps for work? IPad is just better for drawing. If you want a full pc experience, go for surface.
If you want to consume media contents while traveling, ipad (5g) is the best choice. If you have to work while traveling, I recommend surface pro (especially x or 9 5g if you only need office apps and arm native applications)
You can't run Blender or Maschine in an iPad. As simple as that.
I am surprised that MS bothered with the 12th-gen Intel, it is a flame-thrower in disguise, and this Intel intent to match Apple by just using more cores at higher frequencies mean they are back to the old days. Come on Intel, efficiency is the key.
The SP9 is MS going through the motions, and although disappointing for some, is only expected when PC sales are in freefall. Apple got bashed for just a refresh due to slowdown, read the papers if you do not get what the world economy is going through, but was totally troll-fest by the anti-Apple mob. They have all gone AWOL now we see MS doing even less! Hard to justify paying this much for so little in these times, and strictly for any business that may be riding the storm better than the rest.
why no AMD variants?
I have the SP7 and i paid like 1700 dollars to get the i7 version and it's not worth the price.i don't know for the sp8 or 9. But buying the 7 was such a bad 'choicr.
I always thought Apple would be the first to remove the headphone jack from laptops. I'm surprised Microsoft are the first ones to do it.
I guess they were able to conclude from analytics that not a lot of people use that port. Even I use a type-c earphones anyway.
Not to mention that people's phones anyway don't have a headphone jack so why not add extra type c ports to laptops so people can use the same device
The problem is that Bluetooth headphones are worse than on mobile OS. And if you're an audio engineer, forget about this device.
I would guess they did it to keep parity with the ARM version.
@@oeduardopontes They didn't do it on the Pro 8 though. Why they would do it when it was so unpopular when Dell did it, I cannot imagine...
@@cameronbosch1213 IIRC the Pro 8 only had Intel versions, the ARM versions were the Pro X
There is a specific user demographic that still want the jack, but the consumer market does not need the dangly cable, and prefer BT buds that seamlessly connect between devices. BT is def the future and USB-C is the target for the EU to be the only IO for the future. Of course, USB-C can be used for anything and a jack is basically just for one use.
I decided not to wait for the reviews and got myself a Surface Pro 8 LTE. Main reason is that I wanted LTE/4G while keeping the Intel compatibility/performance. I appreciate Microsoft's effort in trying to push things forward but they completely dropped the ball right after such a good generation past year. Even the ports and buttons placements are way worse IMHO.
The SP9 button and port placement is way better, since with the SP8 it's easy to accidentally hit the power button, especially in portrait orientation.
@@JohnSmith-gb8hd I didn't realize they put the power button on the bottom of the SP8. I have an SP4 and everything is where it should be when using it in tablet mode, which I do 90% of the time. I wish the SP9 had left at least one USB on the bottom to make charging with it better when using it as a tablet, but moving the buttons back was a good choice.
My Surface Pro 7 regularly overheated and all I used it for were office tasks. I heard thermals were better with the 8 but sounds like, at least in terms of thermals, Microsoft took two steps back...
I installed Windows 11 on it and it stopped overheating.
@@DoctorNemmo For real, installing windows 11 stops surface pro 7 from overheating?
Also, Pls how is surface pro 7 battery with Windows 11?
@@nwachukwuv.ikenna3425 I bought mine refurbished, so I'm not sure about the state of its battery, but yesterday I spent 6 hours installing and trying stuff before it got to 20% and decided to charge it again. So it seems to be decent enough.

Lost opportunity to launch a Ryzen 6000 Surface. And the prices are absurd... the I7 32Gb RAM and 1TB SSD costs 3000 euros in Europe. I can get a Lenovo Yoga 7 14" convertible with Ryzen 6800u 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD for about 1700 euros. The Surface line is getting very difficult to justify...

Where is my comment Google ? I am using Airtel broadband ! Is Airtel blocking my comments ?
One of my favorite reviewer here in youtube. Great review 🙂
Definitely not the worst laptop this year lol. I've reviewed a couple others that would be well below this. It's not a bad product its just not much of an upgrade compared to the previous one. Microsoft wants to set a certain type of experience and its just not possible with these intel chips. Also, most people buying this are just using it for general productivity and note taking which is absolutely fine on this laptop.
I want to scream at the top of my lungs.
WHY IS EVERYTHING GETTING RID OF THE HEADPHONE JACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can not stress enough how incredibly infuriating this is, especially when trying to find phones. Now they're doing it to my 2 in 1's?!??!?!?!
❤
I don't see the problem with the removal of headphone Jacks. Two years ago I bought the Samsung a52 solely because it had a headphone jack. With my device I got the galaxy buds+ as a gift and since then I never ever ever again have used wired headphones. I think there are more People like me and companies know that wireless is the future so they better make the switch. Everyone will be OK when Apple does it though
I think mostly people doing creative work in music industry has problems with the audio jack thing and people who are gaming with eGPU. For them it makes more sense to use an audiojack.
And now a review of the Surface Pro 9... "No audio jack" - Ok, i'm done, see ya.
"Battery life on the previous version was better than this"
Wow it's almost like you turned on 120hz when it specifically warns you when you turn it on that it burns up battery life
