Why do MS refuse to provide such an excellent reviewer with sample devices? Surely it benefits them to have open and honest reviews? This was the only review I've seen that contained comparative analysis between the SP8, SP9 & SP9 SQ3/5G. This is really useful and unique. I am a Professor and record lectures and I need an ultraportable device that can do this on the fly. The SP9 SQ3 inbuilt mic array seemed to deliver audio recording that was almost on par with your expensive studio mics. It blew away the SP9. Am i correct in that assumption? Keep up the great work Andrew, you were on fire for this review!
Thank you for comparison of Pro 8 and Pro 9 ARM. I returned my Pro 9 ARM, but will happily look at repurchasing future generations of this product. It's getting there....
I just purchased an SP9 to replace my SP7, and I'm really happy with it. I bought a certified refurbished unit directly from Microsoft, and got the educational discount on the Alcantara keyboard/pen combo. Plus, the deals are great on the SP9 because the SP10 is coming out in May.
The video and audio quality of the built in webcam and mics are clear on both but I think I prefer the one with ARM and 5g. The all metal design is always a plus with me. Nice to have decent audio and the Surface Pro 9 seems to deliver that. The problem with Microsoft is that when all is said and done with the extra peripherals you’ll be adding such as the keyboard to the package, it will get pricey as Andrew stated it. Once again, you’ll be better off getting a comparable Dell laptop and save yourself some money in the end. Great video once again Andrew! Appreciate it and appreciate you as well!! 👍😁
Thank you for the great comparison review Andrew, good to have a channel like yours to see independent reviews. I'm actually surprised the Intel 12th generation had better battery life vs the 11th generation, it just seems that Intel prioritized power vs battery life in this iteration in most laptops. I've been a surface pro user for a long time. After the 8 it's nice to see the relocated power button. There are alternatives, but usually they have some compromise, like not having a kickstand as with the Dell. Also here in Europe the alternatives are sold for the American normal price, not the "constant" discounted price, so they're way more expensive. I still would like to see an AMD powered pro, but with the laptop line going full intel again, I think it won't happen.
im still rocking a pro 3, starting to have issues and debating the upgrade, the power button would be nice if it was on the right at the top, that way im not accidentally turning it off when i wanna change the volume
what Microsoft needs to change in the (Surface Pro) are the keyboard materials. Over time, they tend to break and wear out. They need to change to a material that is as good, resistant and easy to clean as that of the tablet itself.
I am seriously conflicted between the Dell 2-in-1 and the Surface. Based on price and warranty, (you sometimes need that dang gone warranty). Since these are not available at dell anymore, you can find them at the dell outlet. Lowest cost one is $987, but when you add warranty, 2 to 3 year, dell adds $400. Now the Surface 9, I can get at Costco for $1099, with 2 year warranty included. Big Difference, is the CPU and Storage, RAM is the same. Very Big Difference.
If they could have kept it then they should, but I’d take the “correct” button placement on the Pro 9 over the headphone Jack on the Pro 8 that I own. Simply because (to me) a headphone Jack is almost useless, but the button position on the Pro 8 makes it harder to use inking on the couch or standing as the buttons are on the end you can’t stand it up vertical

For me, at $1000 want a type cover, pen, 8 gig of ram and 256gig for a base model. It doesn't have to be the top tier type cover or pen, but I want a complete set up. 128gig in my opinion is not enough storage for a premium device even though the ssd is replaceable. For 1k you can buy a gaming laptop with better specs than I listed at best buy and have 300+ left over for a tablet. You could buy a nice 2 in 1 laptop and have plenty left over. I have a hard time justifying the price.
Very good review that helps me make decision. One quick questions, is the noise level of the intel version good for recording use? I hope to purchase it as a backup computer for recording using Studio One or Pro Tools
I got the Surface pro 8 (16GB/256GB) and I am very happy. The only thing that annoys me is power button and volume rocker on the side (coming from pro) It works well with my 3D drawing and calculation programs for selling furniture.
I have to say that i love the beginning when you tell about the product, if you bought it or got it for free or borrow it from manifacture. It really matters at the ens i do not want to look at a review on a product from lets say a new Macbook on a fanboy-channel, you know what i'm saying? Good job there
Andrew very good and fair review. I love the Surface form factor. I'm on my 2nd. I had a Pro 7, and now have a Go 3 (10.5" tablet). I have found at work or home I seldom use a laptop on my lap, except to write this reply, short emails, things like that. So I like having just the display for watching You Tube, and docked between a full size keyboard and display the Surface is a great 2nd display to put things like the calculator, music player, calendar, While Windows is not a tablet OS I prefer that a Surface can be a full PC, over the touch 1st OS like iOS or Android. Lastly, buying last year's or waiting is generally a good way to low the cost to visit Surfaceland. LOL
The Intel CPU is far better than SQ3. That was a complete waist to bring it to market. Intel for all its flaws (too hot for high usage or throttles out), is still good for the most part.
Nice PC. Camera and Mics appeared good. User upgradeability is somewhat of an illusion if you can replace the SSD but can't easily find the proprietary part. Why can't Microsoft put in a standard SSD? The speed of this SSD is nothing special and putting in a gen 3 standard SSD makes more sense since it is much more readily available and allows easier upgradeability. I am sure Microsoft could have engineered this to accommodate a standard SSD. The problem with the ARM version is there is limited compatibility running some windows programs. Why pay this kind of money and handicap yourself with this limited compatibility? Port selection is very limited. For those people who like this type of unit they will be satisfied but also pay a premium price for it. Appreciate another great review. It is nice to see the different kinds of offerings these manufacturers put out. In the end everyone's tastes and needs are different.
I think using a 2230 SSD for the SP9 is exactly right. Saves weight, makes that small access panel easy to manufacture. It is the likes of Dell that irk. Dell make laptops that are designed to fit 2280 SSD's but still put in 2230's anyway to save money.
The SSD in the Surface is in no way Proprietary. It uses the M.2 2230 (22mm wide, 30mm long) standard size NVME drives. While the M.2 2280 standard is more popular, the 2230 drives are still standard, and becoming increasingly popular as devices continue to be shrunk. Port selection for a Premium Tablet is excellent. The iPad pro has a single Thunderbolt port (although it uses next to none of the Thunderbolt fucntions) and the Samsung galaxy Tab S8 Ultra also has a single port. The Surface Pro 9 can be plugged in to power and have 2 additional USB devices plugged in at the same time.
I was debating getting the surface pro 9, ultimately went with a yoga 9i. The price difference for the same specs is astonishing. Not 2 mention the add on keyboard. Microsoft is extremely dumb to price this so high, that cant even compete with competition on battery/performance.

The Surface Laptop Studio is a much heavier, bulkier laptop. It has a fixed base and clamshell laptop design. While it's screen can be brought flat, it is not easy to use as a tablet at all.

I'm still rocking on my SP8 and from what I can gather, I don't think I'm missing out on anything by NOT upgrading to SP9. Barely any changes, not even the look is different much. Just like how Apple changes their iPhone appearance lol ! :D
I've got a pro 8 as well, but I'm considering upgrading solely for the better placement of the power button. I use the pro 8 in portrait all the time and since the power button is on the bottom when I do I'm constantly turning off the display accidentally. The pro 9 finally put the power button back on the side for portrait mode
@@isaacgraham3684, as far as I know, there is some plastic /rubber cover you can place on top of the power button in case you are scared of accidently turning on the decide. Im using a full cover for the pro8 so my SP8 never turns on by accident when tossing it into the rucksack. The price to upgrade is just too much in my opinion. I will on the other hand though wait for next year to see if they implement bigger changes into SP10. Perhaps I will make my move then :) Disappointed that they didn't cooperate with AMD to have AMD chipset instead. Maybe that would solve the issues with the short battery time on the Non-Arm version.

The Surface Laptop Studio is a much heavier, bulkier laptop. It has a fixed base and clamshell laptop design. While it's screen can be brought flat, it is not easy to use as a tablet at all.
Couldn't have said it better. Thanks.
@@andrewmarcdavid but what do you think power wise? I’m leaning towards the SLS but a little disappointed it still has the 11th Gen chip
@@VGmasterX my guess it will get updated in Spring 2023 maybe to 13th Gen. SLS as configured now is more powerful than SP9
The mic quality is a lot better on the 5g but i would go with Intel as the mic is ok but still Intel is perfect for me and I need intel as i need performance
Can I edit a Wix website using the SurfacePro? Wix requires a computer to edit, I cannot edit via mobile (phone or tablet).
Yes, you can edit Wix website on the Surface Pro 9
I think Lenovo Yoga Duet i7 Gen 5 & IdeaPad Duet 5i Gen 7 are better and cost effective than Apple & Microsoft. I love Lenovo over Apple & Microsoft.
I heard from iFixit Microsoft made this device more easy self-repairable. That scores serieus points for buying it.
Yes, much better than previous models.
Hi everyone. I was wondering if someone could please help me solve the flickering screen of my surface Pro 4, I7 16G RAM computer. Lately, my computer screen starts flickering within 10 min of start. Recently, I deleted the Intel (R) Iris (R) Graphics ( under the Display adapters) and upgraded as suggested under MS problem solving tools but did not resolve the problem. I will highly appreciate your inputs/suggestions to resolve my compter flickering screen. Thank you very much
Do both the pro 9, I5 and I7 have fans or only the I7 has fan?
All intel variants have fans
This is by far one of the best video on surface pro
Thanks!
Thinking to upgrade my surface pro 3. Really like the surface pros it does everything i need. Don't want to do much research on any other laptops so I think ill pull the trigger on the i7 1,599 option unless someone can tell me a good reason not to. Besides wait til it goes on sale :D
Great video
Excellent review.. continue this path and wishing you great success ahead. I have a surface pro 5 and still good for my needs so i will keep it but my next upgrade is pro 9 or 10 intel model. personally i dont need 5G but i wish it was at same price or close with intel, as battery life and camera is better. also kb with pen should be less under 200. for me it is additional $349 in canada
Much appreciated!
SF Pro 9 very good now
They don't even return my emails 😂😂😂😂😂 lmfao
so the ssd is not integrated?
Correct, it is not soldered into the motherboard and has a removable hatch to access and replace the SSD.
You can't use the Surface Pro without the keyboard, so why sell it separately?
You can though? Windows uses a digital keyboard on your Surface just like any regular iPad
Andrew good video as usual. Youre my go to tech guy. I’m going to buy a surface pro 9, but I want to future proof it. So how much Ram should I purchase? I purcashed the M1 Pro last year,it didn’t really provide me the work experience I was hoping for.
Get at least 16GB and 32GB if you can.
@@andrewmarcdavid Okay, thank you
SIR, WHY NOT CAMERA ADD IN PROS AND CONS, IF MICROSOFT WILL GIVE APPLE IPHONE LIKE CAMERA , MARKET WILL GROW FASTLY VERY.
Really love the informative and impartial surface reviews! I'm currently on the SP6 and I was thinking on upgrade to the 9, but I'll probably just skip it or go for a discounted 8
Why? PrO9 has better specs and better battery life. I thiink pro 9 is the best purchase. Intel version
Only SP9 arm version has better battery life.
The SP9 Intel version's battery is abysmal.
@@SimonRodriguezme i mean yes, but I would have to buy a new mouse, sell my Kensington dock and it's currently too expensive to justify it tbh
I would buy it but I'm hesitant about the price because it's kind of unreasonable
You can pick it up on sale right now as Surface Pro 10 will hit shelve soon.
Audio and video quality is much better on the surface pro 9 with SQ3
I have the surface pro 7, I use it for writing long periods of time, in this situation the screen becomes very hot, the surface pro 9 have the same problem?
As I show in the video it does a good job of staying relatively cool even under load.
@@andrewmarcdavid Thanks a lot
Did your surface pro 9 overheat when connected to an external display?
I didn't notice it overheat
@@andrewmarcdavid oh cuz I noticed it. idk how to fix it
The easy access to the SSD is an easy way to lose the flap. I don't like it.
Audio quolity is bether on the 5g verison not much but bether.. Thansk for alot of good review of devices.
Why is that last gen got the h processor and this year they have replaced it with u processor???
Last gen did not have the h series. The Surface pro 9 intel is a nice bump in performance from last Gen as evidenced by the multi core Geekbench score.
Last gen did not have H series processor. U series will give better battery life and will be better for thermals.
@@andrewmarcdavid okay thanks andrew so which one would u recommend at this time the last gen sp8 or sp9 the intel version?
@@hamzarock5390 get the SP8 and save the money 💰
@@andrewmarcdavid Thanks andrew 😊
