Reviewing this in 2020 and even though I've done this 100 times , listening to Rener go through the details reminds me of how much work I still need to do ! Thank you Gracie University !!! 🥋❤🥋
Rener is such a superb instructor..he articulates every piece so perfectly.. thanks for the technical breakdown...I do this move even better now due to your details.
Spoke too much? Renner you are one of the most clear and concise instructors I have ever seen. My instructors, thankfully, teach very much as you do. I am fortunate to train with them.
I love how excited Rener is every time he makes a video. It seems like he's doing it for the very first time even though he's been doing this stuff over and over and over again. I suppose that's one reason why Rener is so good: Everything keeps its interest to him.
THE ENTIRE GRACIE FAMILY ARE LEGENDS ESPECIALLY Rener and Ryron. Thank you guys on all the help you have provided me with GJJ. You two are very great teachers, so thank you.
I love these videos, its like a how to guide to being a black belt :D mind you it would take years to watchand learn them all to put it into practise - its really annoying that some instructors know how to do it but cant really explain it accurately but this dude is awesome in that respect
great thing about the kimura from the guard: If it doesnt work you can still go for a omoplate, take the back, go for a gogoplata, triangle etc. the biggest problem (even if I love the Kimura extremly), you have to set it up perfectly, and your timing has to be laser sharp.
one of the most amazing techniques in gracie jiu jitsu! Every single detail in this technique is with 100 % effectivness! you don't use your own strenght even once! ;D
jo nice ,but i wish you show steps like 1-2-3-4 slowlier and where is the 2nd , your favorite variation, can i get a link please 'cause i can't find it?
Great video, really enjoyed. I was looking to see if there was a leg-based sweep into kimura that I did with my coach a few weeks back. But it's always cool to see and learn new techniques :D Well presented too.
A question: when you get to the stage 1 of the punch block series, when you wrap your foot around his back, could he attack you in the groin with his knee? If yes, how do you defend against that? I'm just thinking about the street application for this technique. Please don't think I have bad intentions for asking this, I'm asking this because I'm genuinely interested, as you can see from this very newbie-ish question.
Deniz Aydin not if they break your jaw or crack your skull.. Yeah, a nut strike sucks, but stomp on the head can potentially be WAY WORSE.. and to respond to the original question, hold your opponent tight. If he's focused on trying to hit you in the sack, I guarantee he's not trained in submission defense and will likely leave an opening for you. Someone who does something like that is desperate. Stay calm and keep training.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU for this video! went for a BJJ practice yesterday and tapped someone with this :-) i only started BJJ like 4 months ago and im 30 years old. Peace from Israel
+N73B60 Although Krav Maga (literally translates to "contact battle" if anyone wanted to ask) is an israeli practice, there are places here who teach BJJ and other stuff... :)
I am curious about your question. You are asking if the guy (Brian in this situation) moves his left knee up towards Reners head to block the hips from scooting out?
Number09 No disrespect for not using their names!... But, the initial "scoot" with the opposite side of the Kimura would be the first "block" as I have always been taught to keep the knees as "North" as possible unless you are jamming it in their "bum" for an escape. The second and probably most critical, once he has the set up of the Kimura lock...is to advance the same side knee "North" as to keep Reners' hips from sliding through... Probably not the best description. Hope that helps... Wish you the best in your studies!
What I don t understand is why you need to scoot out on the side to finish. In my gym they teach it without getting to the side. I might be missing some details, but I feel like the scooting out to the side moment might alow for the opponent to roll over. Perhaps one can get punched if you don t scoot away from the free hand?
I remember watching this about 13 years ago when I first started jiu jitsu. Now seeing it again, there are some details I still use and things I have added since. One thing I would recommend doing differently and im sure they do now is to use a monkey grip when finishing not a "C" grip.
I am a beginner but i am making some kind of mistake. Whenever i try the kimura, my opponent is able to bend his arm, wich makes me lose my grip. Any tips?
It would help to demonstrate technique if each person had more vibrant colors. Instead of wearing a white gi, try blue and red. It makes it so you can see the two people and limbs very easy. Try to wear something that makes your body look more unique from his. (I know you have a voice and face and this and that, but a little color coordination might do wonders.)
@Zwollem you need to pull there arm against your chest. just like they show in this technique. they should have very hard to bend there arm beacuse of your leverage then.
Brian was not born a gracie his last name is ortega rener took him in as a young kid to teach him jiu jitsu around the age of 13 he has grown up with the family and and they have become family over the years
This technique was practiced in Judo and Japanese Jujutsu. However, the specific minor details of this technique that are shown here are usually not shown in Japanese Judo or Jujutsu. I already had a feeling you were from Europe based on your post. Anyways, the problem is, when the BJJ craze started to take root, many BJJ black belts made claims that they created every technique, even-though we know that is not true.
Just a few examples from the top of my head; RDA has threatened with it from the north south position in the past, Khabib won a fight with one last week against Michael Johnson, Cub Swanson used it in the Ricardo Lamas fight to use as a bait for the guillotine and Frank Mir broke Nogueira's arm with it
Frank The Rabbit No you're right I hardly watch it I'm a fan of boxing. But I like BJJ and occasionally watch fights. I did see khabib use it last week aswell. I will have to look up that mir vs nogueira though.
Reviewing this in 2020 and even though I've done this 100 times , listening to Rener go through the details reminds me of how much work I still need to do ! Thank you Gracie University !!! 🥋❤🥋
I love that well timed smile...really reinforces the point he is making in a pleasant way. Rener is a rock star!

I'm loving the old Gracie Insider videos! Also, very awesome how he called T-City his brother :)
Love how he called Brian a brother.. That was awesome
Nathan Villalobos is that Brian Ortega?
Michael davtyan yup
He is his brother! As you are mine!
@@michaeld2390 yes the og is now in the ufc fighting against the top dudes

5:12 freaked the hell out of me I thought he just destroyed that guys shoulder
😂🤣
Awesome instructor, these really help to reinforce what you learn in class.
THE ENTIRE GRACIE FAMILY ARE LEGENDS ESPECIALLY Rener and Ryron. Thank you guys on all the help you have provided me with GJJ. You two are very great teachers, so thank you.
Lol, how young was Brian Ortega in this video? Did he already turn 18?
Barely 17 i think, crazy
I love the details! Renner Gracie is so good at explaining and breaking down the small details, the how and the why. Thank you for making this video!
This old Gi Rener is wearing here was the best. Would love to get ahold of one 🥋.
You could NEVER speak "too much". Your attention to detail is amazing.

I wasn't paying attention and I thought Rener killed Brian Ortega at 5:16
The Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy in Torrance CA. It's a suburb of LA. It was the first BJJ school in the US.
one of the most amazing techniques in gracie jiu jitsu! Every single detail in this technique is with 100 % effectivness! you don't use your own strenght even once! ;D
Looks easy but damn there is alot of steps and it's complex makes me appreciate it even more
tutorials are on point, explains everything exactly perfect i love it
Damn. Look where "little brother" Brian is now. This is crazy

Deal with it, getting kneed in the nuts is way better than getting your face stomped out
+njdnjdfvsj actually, you will recover quicker from a stomp to the face than a groin strike

I love the Kimura. The best Kimura was Karo Parisyan vs Dave Strasser in the UFC.

Nice details... What is the guy in the guard moves his knee "North" to block the hips from moving out from under once the arm is trapped?
I am curious about your question. You are asking if the guy (Brian in this situation) moves his left knee up towards Reners head to block the hips from scooting out?
Number09 exactly...
Questions like that are good, I have ideas but I don't have a answer for you. I am going to drill that very scenario, on both sides.
Number09 No disrespect for not using their names!... But, the initial "scoot" with the opposite side of the Kimura would be the first "block" as I have always been taught to keep the knees as "North" as possible unless you are jamming it in their "bum" for an escape. honorary Gracie that kid
Thank you for all the videos.
Great stuff. Love the riding your opponent up variation. Thanks!
Great lesson. Great teacher
Not everyone is an expert in Judo or JJ, or BJJ very well explained thank you.

If you don't scoot out to the side your leverage is minimal. This creates maximum leverage and control.
These videos are gems
i don't think there can be a more comprehensive video on this technique
do you have any on sweeps, or take downs?
I remember watching this about 13 years ago when I first started jiu jitsu. Now seeing it again, there are some details I still use and things I have added since. One thing I would recommend doing differently and im sure they do now is to use a monkey grip when finishing not a "C" grip.
My left shoulder is sore from drilling this twice this week lol
Yes gotta try this! What happened to Brian Gracie? Didn't know there was another brother.
He changed his name to Brian Ortega and became a UFC star lol. Just kidding. He wasn't a Gracie, he just called him brother.
Do they clone Gracie’s? How many are there? A100?
Chuck Johnson it’s a big family but his “younger brother” Brian is not a Gracie he’s a ufc fighter and he is very close with the gracies
I am a beginner but i am making some kind of mistake. Whenever i try the kimura, my opponent is able to bend his arm, wich makes me lose my grip. Any tips?
dude is really enthusiastic with his teaching, wish i trained there.
Great video as usual, you are always entertaining...
i was wondering is that neck hug legal in judo competions?
if they straighten it cant you go for a oma plata? (or however you spell it)
Yeah i'm a total beginner to BJJ and everything he says makes perfect sense, would love to train with someone like this!
@TheSleepingMoth I would like to see one of your fights. Moreover, I would like to see you fight that guy.
Powerful Young TCity

10 years ago, Brian Ortega had a choice
Holy shit i didn't even make that connection until you said that. I thought that was literally his brother lol
how does one not get kicked in the groin in the streets putting someone in guard?
How many brothers do you have?
Great demonstration.
videos are great man but I got to get on the mat and train this stuff
one of my fav submission
best teacher ever!
2:41 can you sweep him from that position?
I love learning when punches are considered. So much better.
So smooth and awesome!!
video not working
@Zwollem you need to pull there arm against your chest. just like they show in this technique. they should have very hard to bend there arm beacuse of your leverage then.
Great instructor!
can you show everyone that with a guy like Tsunami? I have an impossible time with him and my hands are small his are large.
All of the Gracies have strange, exotic names. And then there is Brian...
Brian was not born a gracie his last name is ortega rener took him in as a young kid to teach him jiu jitsu around the age of 13 he has grown up with the family and and they have become family over the years
"Scoot potential" haha.
Excellent video!
From guard, why don’t more guys use the Ezekiel choke ?
Super! Great variations
Renner should be a politician or public speaker. You don't hear any "UMMMM"s and "UHHHH"s with him. He speaks very eloquently and with purpose.
This guy seems like such a cool guy!

Great teaching

The kimura is underrated. I never see anyone use it in mma.
Then you don't watch much mma
