Great intro on Alex, Rener. He's not just an amazing instructor, but an amazing person as well. I'm beyond blessed to have the opportunity to know him and to train under him....
Alex and Rener, thanks for the awesome armbar tutorial. Even though I'm still working on perfecting Combatives-level armbar applications toward my blue belt, this is definitely next level stuff for me and everyone below at least Blue Belt Stripe 2, which is my instructor's rank, by the way. Again, this is really sweet stuff. Thanks and much respect to you both!
Hi I'm from Miami I visited California and had the opportunity to stop by the headquarters. Was such an honor just to step on that big green Matt. Alex you taught a great lesson that day. Was a triangle set up from the modified mount. Very detailed and patient with your teaching. Hopefully next time I come back the whole crew will be there. Unfortunately I missed Hener and Ryron that day but was still such an honor to roll with you Alex and to take a picture. Its a memory I can never forget. Oss
All of you saying this technique is too simple, you dont understand that this applies to high level bjj users who know the intricacies of the armbar and all the ways it can be applied, its very counter intuitive and unexpected for high level guys thats why it works, its seems obvious for us but were just beginners leave your ego at the door.
dude wow, this technique is sick... I feel like I want them to go hands inside like this now, such a beautiful set-up, lots of control, Thanks for another attack from side mount, thanks a lot alex! Wow, the clip grip break is insane, I love it, I usually go more of a spider web guard, and use my shin to act as a slicer, I feel bad sometimes when using it in casual rolling and training because it is painful for my opponent but it is my most effective grip breaker, as if it doesn't break the grip the pain can cause taps, and usually pops the grip to get the arm, this looks much more training friendly, and even just demonstrating it to myself as rener said the grip does not want to be pushed together, it sort of is counter intuitive for the wrists of the person defending. Much much thanks for sharing I can not wait to try this out on the mat!!
egnilk66 No I have not. I had to put my training on hold for about a half of year because I was helping with my father's illness. I have to sharpen my knowledge. I hope to pass. Thank you for the information!
My favorite thing to do when someone has their hands locked while I’m going for an armbar is to pretend like I’m going to use my foot to push their far bicep and thread it through in order to finish with the mounted triangle
at the very first step, when you base, it looks like there is nothing stopping them from just turning to their side and strong over you with their far leg?
The point is that this move is counter intuitive and unexpected for high level guys, for us it may be obvious or simple but high level practitioners wont be expecting a armbar attempt from reverse side mount would they? You cant defend against something you dont know,
Beautiful technique. Just one small request: Can you guys were contrasting colored gis? In other words one partner in white and the other in blue. I think it will have a better visual impact and help the audience follow all those knotted limbs better. Thanks!!
I tried this many times but it never worked. Whenever I switch my base to bring my leg over. I have to release pressure to swing the leg over but everyone just brings their legs in
Exactly, anyone good won't just lay there. The person on bottom should have constant pressure on the person on top. As soon as they let off, they'll escape.
Scott Cunningham Are you a black belt with years of experience generating the reflexes necessary to actually apply this technique in live rolling? Have you drilled it many times to build this movement pattern? It seems the answer is no to both these questions, so I'll have to dismiss your input and go with the black belts who actually use this technique and test it myself.
Fred Bill I would have to agree, I don't think no one would get caught by this. As a Jiu-Jitsu guy your suppose to feel the shift in your opponent weight and with that gap I don't know......hard to believe getting caught by this black belt are not top pressure is everything then does that fit the "filter" I keep hearing about, never mind the filter for this nobody is getting caught by this. The little pressure you had is gone so we suppose to lay there and let you get this? A white belt wouldn't even stay in position for this.
Nothing is invented just rediscovered. This is simply an armbar from reverse knee on belly. Reverse knee on belly is an underused position that's why this feels "new". The grip break is basic biomechanics. This is great stuff don't get me wrong but the longer you train the easier it is to see stuff like this. BJJ is simply science
Romeo Barnes Well put. I'm a new blue belt, and I was talking to a guy in class last night, about how little we see, even though we see a lot more than new guys, who see nothing at all. Part of what makes Jiu-Jitsu so addicting. The cerebral parts. I've never met a dumb black belt. This was great. They have a great instructor in Alex. Good stuff.
I love the innovative thinking and the lack of ego in Gracie Jiu Jitsu academy, different setups each person brings to the table. This simply showcases the open minds and lack of ego in bringing these setups for everyone to view.
Don Charley James Wagner This just demonstrates there's no such thing as a perfect attack or perfect defence. Every move has at least one counter and every counter has at least one counter of its own. It's bloody endless, and that's a good thing.
+BigPerm6999 Assuming the person knows jiu-jitsu, biting would only waste time in a vulnerable position. If the leg closest to your face pushed up around your mouth (out from under your chin) you've almost escaped the armbar. If you stop and start trying to bite, the person will likely get the leg back under your chin. If you somehow bite down and really get good contact with the leg, the person is probably going to break the arm in a matter of no more than 10 seconds I would think. I've drilled getting out of arm locks a lot, and if the person knows what they are doing, it is very difficult to get the leg over your face, but even then a lot of times they will still finish.
Kyle Rutland Just doing a quick search of arm bar on google images brings up many shots where the hamstring is sat next to the victims mouth, even jui jitsu black belts, so Im not to sure, especially when performed face down. Should the victim of the arm bar successfully bite a hamstring tendon in half it would leave the attacker unable to walk which seems far worse than a broken arm.
+BigPerm6999 I think the more important thing, and what many martial arts/street fighting techniques do not address, is the fact that the person performing any submission is likely in a dominate position. If you try a "dirty" technique while someone has the advantage on you as far as leverage and body placement, they will begin to gouge the eyes, hammer fist, etc. while you are biting (which will take more than a second to do any real damage), and if you cannot withstand the attack and finish your bite, you will likely end up with a dislocated arm at the elbow. Very high risk move from my viewpoint, but it does not mean that biting the leg will never work I do not suppose.
I think it's plausible if you were agressive enough with your bite. But assuming the guy was in mount during a "no rule match up" why would he go for an armbar? Wouldn't you have already tried to bite him by then, in which case he would probably avoid putting his leg next to your face?
Great intro on Alex, Rener. He's not just an amazing instructor, but an amazing person as well. I'm beyond blessed to have the opportunity to know him and to train under him....
4:10 setup
3:50 show time
6:28 reversed knee on belly Entry
Thanksss
Knowledge starts a 0:00
15:28 is just mind-bending.
Max Loh 🌸ikr 😊
Things like that blow my mind every time
Golden technique, really like that grip break! Nice work guys!
This specific arm bar is perfect for judo as not many high level judo competitors practice ground defence. Thank you for teaching this
Stuart is clearly a gifted teacher.
Never done JJ in my life, but definitely gonna use this one on my sister! Thanks! She will NOT see this coming
Hopefully, it'll send a message to little sisters everywhere not to bully their big brothers.

Your instructor is a blue belt…
What belt are you now ?
Thank you Alex, for sharing your techniques with us

I keep coming back to this…awesome!!!
Outstanding! Forever evolving.
I now know who Alex Stuart is! Just TONS of great info....Thanks!

Each time I train with this guy I grow. I’m angry that I cannot put all my energy in thus daily. But I am getting it in
Alex, great info. Thanks for sharing.
love the "space" influence...or lack of- for that matter in certain situations
That is funky. Knee on belly is a killer position, gotta try this armbar.
dude wow, this technique is sick... I feel like I want them to go hands inside like this now, such a beautiful set-up, lots of control, Thanks for another attack from side mount, thanks a lot alex!

I train at a Gracie Academy certified school. I am just a three stripe white belt in Combatives but I can't wait to try some of this out!
I am now a four stripe white belt and I should be testing soon!
+C.Duncan Sutherland Have you tested? If not...have you heard the new rules? 90% to pass....95% if you want to continue on and become an instructor.
egnilk66 No I have not. I had to put my training on hold for about a half of year because I was helping with my father's illness. I have to sharpen my knowledge. I hope to pass. Thank you for the information!
+C.Duncan Sutherland how much are you guys paying?
(The real) Rail /slave Go brother go!!
One of my favorite videos
Rener is really special when it comes to context.
Very cool for the academy to share this technique!
I love this video! Thank you guys so much for this!
My favorite thing to do when someone has their hands locked while I’m going for an armbar is to pretend like I’m going to use my foot to push their far bicep and thread it through in order to finish with the mounted triangle
Smart dude. Weak side back mount for life.
@@codyjwoods WSM4L!
Nice work Thank you... great channel
Good stuff. I want to really deep dive on the armbar so thia is a great bit of ifo to add to my study.
I'm super excited to be doing a seminar with Alex Stewart in a couple of weeks. He's visiting our CTC. 🎉❤
Thank you guys for sharing!
rener the best jiu jitsu of the world! thank you
Rener: “That’s dope, now I understand fully.”
Everyone else on the mats: *visibly sweating worriedly
Very nice vid and clear instruction very good guys
Fantastic discovery! Love it!
Slick move..gotta try this!
Thanks Gracie family.
I've never seen that entry before. Very cool.
This is awesome. Thank you!!!
Love training with Alex. The Jedi Zombie
Taking an inch and making it a mile IS what what being a black belt is all about.
Love it, thank you for the lessons!!! Enjoying the makeshift partner as well haha
Simply amazing cant wait try it!!
You guys need to start breaking down fights again. This could had been uploaded to the Gracie Academy channel.
Hey Alex taught me the guillotine! Super cool dude.
But Rener, Javi Vazquez teaches the S-grip with the thumbs tucked in, would that create much of an issue for unclipping it?
I am interested in becoming a jiujitsu practitioner I find the art to be very fascinating as well as great for real life situations!!!
3 years later, a stranger appeared and asked:
Did you begin the journey?
Great video!
Beautiful technique,I love armbars and I'll definetely try this out mext time on the mat;)
Good morning rener are there any Gracie academy dojos in the NYC area ?
Definitely going to try this!
Gracie Breakdown: Royce v. Akebono (absolutely beautiful Omoplata), Shinya Aoki vs Joachim Hansen (Gogoplata ftw), Shinya Aoki vs Mizuto Hirota (RIP Arm).
Great techniques 👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Awesome to give props like this
so you put your knees together at the very last step right? before then the one leg is over head and one leg over their chest with lots of space
Thanks for sharing!!
After Ten Thousand man hours of practice and drilling, I should be good with this.
Amazing technique!
Great video
great instruction!
Really good breakdown :D
Technique is so dope

Thank you. Very slick.
Beautiful...
Nice! thank you
this guy is talented
I want to learn this
Beautiful Jujitsu ... can we call it the Alex Armbar or A.S. Armbar :)
11:10 I hate that grip! GABLE GRIP is better! and how does this compare to Ronda Rousey's grip break?
Beautiful technique. Just one small request: Can you guys were contrasting colored gis? In other words one partner in white and the other in blue. I think it will have a better visual impact and help the audience follow all those knotted limbs better. Thanks!!
Request denied

GODF1R3 it wouldnt be a good if you have to be a black belt to use the technique.
Fair point. Still, no technique is fairly critiqued without practicing it.
Fred Bill I would have to agree, I don't think no one would get caught by this. "I make a little noise to make him look over here!"
I love the misdirection!
I come back every couple years to review this.
Very cool.
What was that at The very end?
that was awesome
Achei fraco esse armlock.. devido a essa passagem da perna por cima da cabeça. Se o oponente subir, vc nao tem como pesar a tempo e perde a posição.
How do we defend this technique?
That was outstanding. And I thought everything that could be invented in Jiu-Jitsu had already been invented! Guess not. ;)

Doubles666 That's the beauty of Jiu-Jitsu there are no dead ends. The longer you train the more branches of both attacks and escapes you will see.
how vulnerable are your hamstring tendons to been bitten in half when performing an arm bar in a no rule match up?
+BigPerm6999 Probably not very.
+BigPerm6999 Assuming the person knows jiu-jitsu, biting would only waste time in a vulnerable position. So slick! Can't wait to drill this
maybe I'm wrong because it's done slow but it looks very escapable
+james95jones KEYBOARD WARRIOR LMAO
+Corey Willis you obviously don't know me, I actually train myself, do you? you don't sound like you do!
Most people watching these videos do. Just because someone acts like an ass sometimes doesn't mean they don't train BJJ.
#First sick armlock set ups! #6WS
Those Helio 100 gis 😍
