- Sing For The Day! showcases Styx guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw's rousing 2016 solo turn with the Cleveland-based Contemporary Youth Orchestra, under the direction of principal conductor/founder Liza Grossman. Alongside guitarist/musical director Will Evankovich and backed by the next generation of the finest high-school-aged musicians in Ohio, Shaw also celebrates the tenth anniversary of Styx's triumphant 2006 One With Everything performance with the CYO. Here, the CYO & Chorus bring new life to many classic band and solo tracks in front of an enthusiastic audience at the intimate Waetjen Auditorium in Cleveland, including "Blue Collar Man," "Girls With Guns," "High Enough," "Too Much Time on My Hands," "Crystal Ball" (featuring the debut of its never-recorded lost verse), and most especially "Renegade," highlighted by an epic guitar/violin duel between Shaw and a noted CYO alum. "It was so much bigger and more everlasting than any of us imagined it would be," marvels Shaw - now see and hear just how magical Sing was for yourself.

I’m 64, and this literally brought tears to my eyes. What a fantastic performance!!!!!!
60 here same reaction.
66 same same
I am a music educator and this is profoundly overwhelming to my music snob ears. Not only is this experience beyond great for these young people, the performers are impeccable in their execution and highly talented musicians - EXACTLY what the world needs now.
Just amazing, truly good music has power. I've been through (and lived), more than most people.
It's so rare for a piece of music to move me to tears. This did. Bravo and so well done.
I've been a Styx fan since the first time I heard Come Sail Away.
This rendition of this song with these kids, reminds me why their music spoke to me in the first place.
It just doesn't get much better than this.
So True!!!! I can't even imagine the honor these kids felt. Wonderful!
Thanks Teach, Love you !
Weeping? Straight gushing the whole time! Nothing but LOVE, Amen
John, they feel the same as any musician, pure pride and pleasure. It is an absolute joy to play music it this level.
This is why the arts should NEVER be dropped at our schools. True freedom lies in self-expression... and allows our children to soar ever higher, more so than any other curriculum or school-funded activity can. 👍
And you've said why that many want it out of schools.
What an unbelievingly gracious thing Tommy did for these kids. They’ll remember this for the rest of their lives.
Shoot, I'll remember the rest of my life and all I did was watch it on RUclips.
@@a1scooter1 IKR?
So will their parents. "Kid, you get to play with a LEGEND."
Such a beautiful performance! I can watch it over and over and never get tired of it. Bravo to Tommy and all the performers 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow. Hope they do.🙏😇💖🎶
Thank you for helping to lift me out of suicidal depression and a really dark place. I listened to this and just wanted to scream and dance with joy and go back out into the world and find all the beauty and joy. My autistic soul is dancing with all the beautiful colors in this beautiful music. Dance dance dance.
Good for you River. Music is, and has always been medicine for the soul. Keep fighting. Peace and Love from Canada.
God Bless and protect you
"your future looks quite bright to me"
Never give up my friend. It really does get better with time.
Keep dancing and making music no matter how humble- it will be your Life Medicine🌹
if you ever get the privilege of hearing a full orchestra… it moves you emotionally.. like this here, the fact that its CHILDREN playing better than most adults is stunning! BRAVO!
These kids weren't even born when this song came out, but you can tell they are really into it...
The world would be so much better if we offered music to every kid throughout their educational journey.
None of those kids were alive when STYX preformed this song for the first time. Yet they NAILED IT. BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be fair, none of them were alive when Bach or Brahms or Ravel's music was first performed, but I'm sure they nail that too lol
@Dawn Hall Doesn’t it seem as though the original fans have passed? Everything seems so bittersweet now.
@Dawn Hall what’s worse is going it alone. This isolation makes me feel hopeless. There is little need or appreciation for the older generation.
That is what makes it even more COOL!
@@eleatherman1 No, we’re still here! Tommy Shaw is 10 years older than me, lol. It’s great to see them playing again!
Imagine your kid coming home from school one day and saying, "Yeah, we're performing a live concert in six months with some guy named Tommy Shaw". Organic music at it's best. 😳
I would be so so proud
I'm 75, a former high school orchestra member, and every time I see and hear this I weep with joy at the faces of those kids enjoying this profound experience. I've no doubt that with the spirit of Tommy's song, this youth is worthy!
So true, man. I'm astonished. In tears myself and almost don't know why. My inner love for teaching, music & kids/ppl learning.
Yeah ok whatever
saw stx live with my son amny years ago and they were great and I loved this too
Agreeing with you. Gives me chills. Love it.
I can't stop watching this every month or so.
Yes, yes, & yes. I'm 70 whenever I need a pick me up I find this. It's now 2023 i hope these phenomenal young people went on to wonderful happy successful lives. The joy on their faces is inspiring.
As a Violinist, Cellist, and lifelong die hard Styx fan this is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen! I’d love to have been in that orchestra!!!… also that first violin absolutely killed it!
COOL is a word that fits yet it's not near enough!
100% agree
My tiny guy didnt have to go so hard. But he did. For us.
Hi. Just a fan. Where was this being done?
Yeah. That kid was amazing. Now I want to see him and this orchestra hook up with Steve Morse and perform a set of Dixie Dregs songs.
Holy crap! That kid on violin is amazing!
Uh-huh . The violin solo .
Sounds like they all are !!! What an awesome opportunity to back up a legend to your parents.
His smile at the end gave me tears
I Never Was A Big Stix Fan,But This Was A Truly Amazing Performance.Tommy Shaw's Voice Is Still Spot On and The Kid's Were Fantastic!👍👍👍🎸🎸🎸
Ditto
In my humble opinion the greatest performance of this song I have seen.
Agreed
Of any song really
I agree! From the very first stroke of the violin I got shivers of pure pleasure throughout my entire body! I already love Styx and this particular song! The joy on the kids faces and Tommy to me is what music is all about! Bravo kids and Tommy! I have a new favorite version of a song I already love ROVK ON,🤘🤘🤘❤🎻🎸🎹🎤
I have played flute since 5 th grade, this is great for these kids!
I am 60 now n I still love Styx and Tommy Shaw! Shows are great! Even in 1978 they were my favorite !
Amen to that.
Tommy Shaw's collaboration with the Cleveland Contemporary Youth Orchestra on "Fooling Yourself" is a testament to the power of orchestral arrangements in rock music. The fusion of Shaw's vocals and the orchestra's symphonic elements creates a grand and emotionally charged performance.
That's not the only song he did with them.
I listen all the time. Allen Jones. Music Ed. Music appreciation. So fourth and so on. Thank again Tommy for taking the time to educate the children. It's so important. Hope ta see ya soon. a brother with the same passions.
There’s more talent and passion on that stage than the entire 2023 music industry.
Fast forward. It's now 2024 and nothing still even comes close
I agree with you 100%.
What a pathetically reductive statement.
You're light...since 2002 or so. Nadda
Props to the kid with the violin solo. Had me in tears. Outstanding young man!!!!
His backstory would be interesting after that amazing performance. It was a soulful performance. I am sure Tommy took notice. Guessing he has made a few introductions in the industry. Bravo.
@John Walker I just came across this video, like you I am in tears!!!
You're not kidding, his playing is excellent. Violin is not my instrument, but I can tell you that in order to play as well as he does, that young man has put in well over a thousand hours of study and practice to reach that point. He has definitely been given some serious private tutelage by someone who really knows their profession.
he is so incredibly serious while playing the solo, and then shows that huge smile after. Gotta love him
Powerful
Every kid should get such a music education. Styx, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Journey..... Thank you Tommy Shaw for keeping the real thing alive. And the kid that did the violin solo rocked it hard! Good job to you all! Tears and cheers......
Asians always good at math and violin.
God bless
I hear that! I'm in my sixties and still playing music. .... as well as having a musical family, I started playing in public school in the 3rd grade!.... what a shame, too many cell phones and not enough instruments. ... oh ya, Keep rocking it Tommy!!!!!
@@acerothstein4755 F*cking MORON!
WHAT? We had entertainment, not fantastic music.
As others have already said, THIS is why we need to promote the arts (including music!) in our schools!!!
Goes without saying that Tommy is great but who else thinks the kid soloing on the violin is awesome too!? Of course, they’re all great! Well done, kids! 🎻 🎶 👏
Who else? How 'bout everybody.
Yes...and so not their music genre. Most excellent. They all have it DOWN PAT!!
I hope that kid has become a star!
Like a boss 😎
I LOVE the little Asian guy! I predict he will go far in life!
The kid on the violin is amazing
I imagine that he must have been nervous. But when he gets to the end of his solo he is smiling❤
They all were amazing
I'm a 55 year old man who is wiping tears from my face right now
As is this 67 yr. old
I'm 58 and crying right with you!
51, and , yes, me too :..)
I'm 55 and doing the same. Takes me back 40 years. Just beautiful.
A THIRD crybaby! For Stynx??!?
This version of the song is amazing, but the smile on these kids faces says it all. The happiness comes through the video. Well done Tommy Shaw!!!
I'm 77 and let me say that watching these young faces in the orchestra playing uplifting music of their generation reminds me that life goes on through our kids. The joy I see in these talented young people and their spirited music revitalizes my creaky joints and old bones. Thanks ever so much for sharing this with me! I loved every minute of their performance!
Time has taken nothing from Tommy Shaw's voice.
Or his looks.
there is obviously some vocal correction software going on bc it doesn't sound natural but he is still as good as
I know, it’s incredible
That’s the truth! Tommy and his voice are ageless!
No it hasent love his him
if you're not weeping a bit when the choir jumps in, wind it back. More tears on violin solos. Support those youth music programs. Thanks Tommy!
Oh, no question about that. Depths of the soul.
No kidding! Got me right in the feels. And those kids who just can't suppress their smiles while they're playing
♥️♥️♥️♥️
They sounded like fine crystal! So bright, and clean, and gleaming! The youth in their voices just breathed more life into a song that was already about life.
Yes! You felt it too and of course I cried.
This performance is incredibly moving. So much joy in the faces of these young musicians. Amazing.
The lead violinist deserves his little grin for his performance. Whoever got the idea to put this together should be applauded, as well as the Tommy and the performers. Inspiring.
Every person that contributed to this rendition is fantastic. From the arranger to the performers. The world could use more of this.
Well said Smilin
You're so right. Oh my goodness!
So true. Very proud of people like these. The young adults who are obviously some of the best get to collaborate with one of the best rockers of all time Tommy Shaw. I keep watching this from time to time. It never gets old seeing an old scholar sharing his passion with younger people who share that same passion. This is absolutely beautiful!!!

Love the smile of the solo violinist because he knew he nailed it!

Truly Anazing! I have watched repeatedly as well
Tommy Shaw's voice has grown exquisite over the years.
It really has "seasoned" well unlike many performers.
never lost is gift of GOD
I always thought it was pretty great. It has held up well! ❤️
Exactly! Had the privilege of attending several shows while working on the Rock legends cruise. He sings amazingly live (all of Styx singers are great) and they DO sing compeltely live ! Plus they're very down to earth when you meet them. Tommy is great!
I think his voice has gotten better through the years.
5 years later and this performance moves me again on so many levels. The gift that keeps on giving to us all. The fun that everyone is having including Tommy. Not to mention the excellent performances by the orchestra. Bravo, and thank you all! I hope folks still visit these comments to know how much joy this performance keeps on delivering. 💖💓💞
Still watching/listening years later. Hundreds of times now, but still gets me choked up...all of those happy and talented young people playing this great piece of music (with Tommy in all of his glory) gives me hope for the future. One of the BEST music videos on RUclips.
Thank you from Canada💙
Do these kids know they're playing a 40 year old masterpiece, one of many Styx/Shaw masterpieces?
Unsung hero: whoever transcribed those solos for the violinist and cellist. Much respect.
I'm pretty sure that the woman conducint did the transcriptions and arrangements.
That was my "wow" moment.
@@rickhicks302 Yup.. Violinist nailed it and everyone knew it. Excellent transcription
Its cool how in the actual synth solo the note range is greater than the violin and it moves to the cello.
leor amikam It reminds me of the solo trade offs that Dave Matthews Band does. I’m thinking of Eat Too Much in particular. Guitar, sax, violin
I just saw Styx at the Fox in Atlanta this past Friday for the first time. They were incredible. Tommy was incredible... and at 69 he still dances around the stage. I'm 66 years old myself, and this song came out when I was in college. But this rendition is the best I've ever seen and one of the most uplifting performances of any song I've ever seen. Bravo Tommy Shaw and the Cleveland CYO!!! JUST BRAVO!!!
I won't worry ever again about the youth of America taking over this great United States. Everyone must be as proud of you as I am !
I'm so lucky this is the music I grew up on.
I had chills at the beginning. Then the choir hit and I started crying.
MisterIdjit some people get it, and there are those who never will...be glad you’re one of them that does.

Holly Holly ......yup.....I got a bug in my eye..
You know I always liked this song when it was a hit back in the seventies.. I didn't quite considerate to be quite as beautiful as it is...until now, being played this way with the orchestra ...it's a really gorgeous piece of work!! way to go Tommy Shaw ... freaking Masterpiece just really really something !! and as another musician one to another, if this doesn't bring a tear to your eye.....
i would pay to see a whole show with them ..dont have to have the real band behind them ..just them ..

I was about 13 or 14 years old and my grandfather was administrator of Parks and recreation in a little town called Hammond Indiana. And every year styxs has would rent out the Civic center for one week to practice. I was the only person allowed to go in there and watch while my grandfather was working and I was waiting for my ride home. I would practice basketball shots alone and one day, Tommy let me play his guitar and sing one of my favorite songs known as renegade. What an honor that was. And I sucked. But the entire band Dennis Tommy and James had me believing that I potential and did an outstanding job. When my grandfather got his heart attack they were in Hawaii and sent him a palm tree as a good well soon gift. Styxs will always have a place in my heart.
And on a side note I lived in a house in highland Indiana that they used to rehearse in the basement before they were big.

I used to play 2nd violin in an orchestra when I was about this age, and I can't even imagine attempting anything so difficult and to do it in a solo spotlight! WOW!
@@tommyshaw4050 You're not Tommy Shaw...go away.
The smile on the face of the principal violinist after his first solo is just priceless.
Nailed it, knows it.
I believe there is a reason that the first-chair violin is usually called the "concertmaster".......
I love the little wry smile on the soloists face after he crushes it on his violin solo and the crowd cheers!
He nailed it. Twice.
How Proud his parents must Be.
How many Takes do you suppose they had to do, to get this right?

One take. The musicians learn their individual parts on their own. Then the orchestra rehearses without Tommy. A few hours of rehearsal with Tommy and a performance.
Next Lead for the Tran Siberian Orchestra!
I listened to Styx growing up. I am a software trainer for the company I work with, and of course in today's time, it's via Zoom. I was tagged by a friend from Facebook and saw this video. I started a couple days ago of starting the online session with some background music while everyone was connecting. It ranged from Mozart, to relaxing, easy going music, until I saw this. video. I played it for the class, and could tell everyone was really getting into it. Tommy is still awesome, but my greatest joy was watching the young and very talented individuals. They looked like they were having the time of their lives. I have watched it 3 more times since this morning and it still puts chills on me. I agree with putting arts back into schools. Searching for more of these videos.
Thank you Styx's , Tommy Shaw and my friend Lisa who went with me to the REO Speedwagon and Styx's concert. This song led my way to sobriety and kept me from slowly killing myself from drugs and alcohol 2017 became my road to sobriety because of this song God Bless.
Notice the grandpa jamming, he's got his grand daughter jamming. So cool.
Holy shit, that has to be one of the best live performances I've ever seen!!!! The strings, acoustics and small crown concert hall walls mixed with Tommy Shaw's expertise talent did it absolute justice! Absolutely incredible!!!!!!!!
And to hear the crowd cheer and watch the kids smile for their efforts is so emotional. If this doesn't bring a happy tear to your eye, nothing will.
Shout out to conductor Liza Grossman for her work on this. It takes a dedicated leader to pull something like this off. Congratulations, Liza!
Amazing Orchestra with our young ones. You all will be forever in our hearts. Thankyou so much Tommy Shaw.
Anybody else cry the whole way through?
I did. This was beautiful. Huge Styx fan here.
Pretty close!
Yes!
I did..It was just beautiful.
I did. The first time I saw this I did. So beautiful.
Wholly shit!!! I have tears in my eyes. I didn't think that was possible.
This performance repeatedly brings tears to my eyes. Awesome.
I have loved Styx from the Grand Illution album. A huge Tommy Shaw fan!
This version of a song I have sang and loved, is unbelievable!
Watching these kids bring a great song to new life is beatiful. Their expressions of love for music and nailing it, made it even better
Tommy Shaw, you are bringing a new generation of music excellence forward!
Kudos
Grand Illusion is my favorite. I used to listen to it all the way through and enjoyed every bit of it. I think it's their best. ❤
Last year I found that someone had dumped their entire record collection in the dumpster at our storage building. There was about 65 albums....Styx, Journey, early Buffett, Beatles, Elton John, Rita Coolidge, Eagles, Meatloaf......I grabbed them all. Probably one of my favorite finds.
Why would they just dump them instead of selling them? We’re they warped or something? Crazy!
if I were there, I would probably fight you for those records ... :) ... you're so lucky
Stynx and Meatloaf-horrible...
@@patricklogan7238 lol
WOW The Beatles, u r very lucky. I wish I had my old record collection.
"Fooling Yourself" is is an old song now, but it is poignantly relevant today, in a time which sadly has a literal epidemic of stressed out and anxious young people. The message of this song is timeless and valuable across the decades.
.
What a joy to see these amazing and beautiful young musicians and singers perform this song. Well done Tommy Shaw! What a musical treasure and a fabulous human being.
Well said.
"this song is timeless and valuable across the decades."
Ditto
As you quoted: The message of this song is timeless and valuable across the decades.

I’ve watched every video on RUclips. EVERY ONE…and I’ve decided this is the best one.
Man...my hat's off to that lead violinist and that lead cello player. Nice work!!!
This song literally saved my life in 1982. A 17yo angry young man with a gun in his mouth. When a song, this song, came on the radio...
That's awesome man. There is love in life!
A Water Gun....oh ok
@@cbennett196631 Water gun? Wtf do you know? You heartless 🤡
