Man in the Wilderness is my second favorite Styx song.Tommy Shaw made his guitar sound like nobody I’ve ever heard in the lead guitar solo in Man in the Wilderness.
Does anyone miss Dennis DeYoung. My goodness the band is good and I have loved them since 1983, but I miss Dennis. I also miss John! Whenever I hear the wooden nickel albums, I immediately think of Dennis DeYoung and John Curulewski! Awesome start to a great band.
With all do respect, what the hell are you talking about? Prior to Crystal Ball, the only Styx song I ever heard was Lady. Tommy Shaw made Styx. And yes, I am that old. 😂
Such a momentous time in my life, and the lives of my friends. This music somehow made it all just a little easier to deal with being an American teenager. And here I sit, at 62, and listening to Styx, and to Kansas, and realizing that it never got any better than that. Thanks to Styx and Kansas !

you make this song and you can die happy knowing that you touched greatness. Man in the wilderness is simply one of the best songs written in terms of its high, quasi metaphisical reach, and its universal music. Its also one of my favourite songs, I feel an identification and brotherhood with this song like with very few. I think its because, much like Conrad's themes in the heart of darkness, it talks about how a man ultimately is alone in his journey, and a man's harsher critic should be himself, you answer to the man in the mirror every hour of every day
Gowan's voice fits so perfectly in Castle Walls. Castle Walls is my all time favorite Styx song. Love it with Dennis DeYoung's voice and Gowan does just as incredible of a job in it
Tommy Shaw is probably my favorite rock god in the world, but JY is positively a phenomenal, underrated guitarist. No one ever mentions the guy. He plays everything absolutely flawlessly and effortlessly. Big props dude!!! 🎸🎸
I agree. Tommy is like 65 years old in this video. I think he might be even better now than back in the 70's. James Young is awesome. He had a a voice back in the day too. What a great band!
And people forget that he sings several of the songs!! It's great to show it, for people to see JY!! He & JY really can play with amazing sounds with their guitars!! 🎸
Two of my favorite Styx songs back to back. Love it! Wasn't yet born when this came out but grew up listening to classic rock and Styx is one of my favorite bands...might have to try and see them live this year.
Yes it was when DDY was with them now can't stand Lawrence Gowan,to much of a showman and he ruins DDY'S songs, can't hit the high notes which ruins the songs
My step mom bought me two cassettes for my 16th birthday and those albums have become two of my favorites even to this day -- Grand Illusion and Point of Know Return. There's no way to describe the impact this level of music makes on a teen who just got his driver license and can finally crank his faves without anyone complaining. The car was a '68 El Camino with a three on the tree, 307 V8, Doug Thorley headers/mufflers (no tail pipes), F70 & L60 Douglas Grab & Go fiberglass belted tires on ET slotted aluminum mags, mirror glass tinting, chrome racing mirrors, etc. The aftermarket stereo would sound atrocious by today's standards, but back then, it was a gorgeous sound harmonized with those headers . . . . . .
Haven’t but gonna check it out now. I broke my chops with these late 60’s, 70’s bands. This is my first return in 40 years. You know family, kids ect. This makes me want to bust out all my old guitars, grow out my now gray hair and go join a rock n roll band. 🤓 heading right now to check out your suggestion. Thanks.
@Jeff Tillman Met tommy and john panozzo in '80, when i was following Styx on tour for three months. They were incredibly kind to us.John was a sweetheart. sad we lost him so young.
This is by far the best version of Styx. Being a drummer I have to admit Todd is amazing to watch. As a musician, a good performance brings tears to my eyes, and Tommy is guilty of doing that over and over throughout his career. Everyone involved in this project should be extremely proud of their body of work....
I was in my late teens. Im 57 and this is still some of my favorite music. I never get tired of it. Its almost as fresh today as it was back in highschool. Great memories.

@@edmilewski5272 Wow! 10 months later and no reply?! Must be trolling? Anyway, it's about Tommy, not finding "real" love, in a sea of women, who'll throw throw themselves at his feet 'cause he's a rock star. Although he was new to that scene at that time, Kansas and original STYX had been on the road for awhile so, you can imagine what he probably saw, and or, experienced in a whole year of touring. ruclips.net/video/DG1QPZ6qfac/видео.html
First album I ever purchased was Grand Illusion. I was 11 years old. I did not even have a turntable to play it on. I would beg my older sister to let me sit in front of her stereo to play the album over and over. Still one of my all time favorite albums and rock bands.
My 1st time to hear a synthesizer was at a Head East, Styx, Foghat concert in Shreveport, La. around 1976. I listened to the Equinox album, till I wore it out. Now I'm deaf. Was right under the rt. side speaker that night. Worth every minute to be that close to Tommy Shaw. Changed my life. Seriously.
I was fortunate enough to see STYX live in 1977 in the fall (September) at the Tarrant County Convention Center (Ft. Worth, Tx) for The Grand Illusion tour. I swear to you it was life changing experience! I thought myself to be a passable musician/guitar player... but at last, I would finally get to see how IT WAS DONE. Absolute perfection through the entire setlist and Dennis DeYoung was in command! At Least until Tommy Shaw started to sing... OMFG he sang like an Angel and he and James Young played their hearts out! John Panozzo on drums (RIP) and his brother Chuck on Bass made up one of the tightest rhythm sections ever... you would be hard pressed to find better than the brothers Panozzo Watching this tonight some 35+ years later it was hard to not be overwhelmed again by the magnificent songwriting and musical expertise on display here. It doesn't get much better than this. Tommy Shaw sings as good as or better than he did when this album came out.
Tim Wilson Agreed with everything you said except it's not the same without DDY and to me Lawrence really sounds like shit but Tommy and JY sound great...
I was fortunate to see them a few months after you did...in San Diego 1978.. Left the next day for Honolulu! What an awesome concert and an excellent way to start a new life!
I bought Grand Illusion in the spring of 1978 when I was in 8th grade -- it was the first record I ever purchased. I still have it. It's a fantastic album that I've listened to hundreds, if not thousands, of times since then. My favorite songs are these two -- I've listened to Man In The Wilderness and Castle Walls every year on my birthday since 1983. So much time has passed, so many friends and loved ones gone. This just takes me right back...
You and I are similar age. The Grand Illusion was one of the first albums I bought after getting a very nice stereo hifi for Christmas by my parents. My copy available up here in Canada was a special A&M mastered at half speed LP, pressed on the quietest made by JVC from Japan vinyl. A remarkable sounding LP I had to save up a bit for it as it cost twice as much as the regular pressings.😎

Just watched this again, and it's deserving of another comment. It's amazing to me, that 35 years after it was recorded, that these guys can still play live like this. This sounds like it was right off the album. Tommy's voice actually sounds even better to me. It's incredible that he still has the range. And to play these two songs together, just like on the album, was a real treat. I used to play the hell out of the Grand Illusion album, it's by far my favorite. Right up there with AC/DC's Back In Black, as far as the song quality and the way they were sequenced on the lp. You show me ANY other band that can pull off a performance like this, after 35 years. Outstanding, gentlemen.
Agree totally!! I had the pleasure of seeing them a second time.....last April in St Augustine, FL. They were incredible and their sound was absolutely perfect!
I hear you! Their harmony, Castle Walls...And how amazing for Tommy to mention opening for Kansas, Left Overture in 76 and Tommy's voice now compared to Walsh's voice now.. Crazy..
I love this stuff, but I am a loyalist. Dennis DeYoung was founder and the heart and soul of Styx. I love Tommy Shaw and the others too, but Dennis' vocals are, to me, the strongest in Rock. Castle Walls was a Dennis DeYoung song. Man in the Wilderness is a Tommy Shaw song.
That is what a real good live band sounds like....real talent...none of this studio magic, autotune, multilayers cheating production here like most of the new '' modern'' rock bands nowadays....all sounding really good on records..can't play for shit live...
Another band that was like that what you describe was the Moody Blues. Nothing special, just a damn fine concert that sounds exactly if not better than their recordings.
I don't want to burst your bubble because this is so great, but there is production live and then lots of post production as well on this, what can we do or say, it's the way of the business. It's still freaking epic.
Always loved the band. Even way back from the beginning with DeYoung & the brothers Panozzo. Really like the twin lead guitars. Reminiscent of Duane & Dickey, Thin Lizzy & the group that started it...., Wishbone Ash!
The band should be in the rock and roll hall of fame. The first band to ever have 4 back to back to back to back platinum albums. That record alone is qualifying.
Having been a long-time fan of Styx from my early years, I listened to all of their albums and appreciate, of course, the original line-up. But I have to pay respect to the new-comers...they are expert musicians, hard to deny that. But most importantly, this performance by Shaw on "Man..." is perhaps as good as the original recording some 40 years ago. Time has been good to Tommy and for that I am thankful. Nice job on back-ups from JY and Gowen on this tune...but TS hitting all the notes as he did years ago is truly a work of art and a true testament of his enduring talent.
Styx never disappoints ... Love these 2 songs. First discovered them, Styx, in 1977. In fact I discovered both them and Kansas about the same time. Love em both.
The Grand Illusion album is simply a masterpiece...😎😎😎

Grand Illusion's double pleasure on the B side. Spent many a night as a teen lying on the floor listening just to these 2 songs.
That was me. Headphones on. These 2 songs. 10 yrs old. Still listening
B side was awesome
you make this song and you can die happy knowing that you touched greatness. Man in the wilderness is simply one of the best songs written in terms of its high, quasi metaphisical reach, and its universal music. Its also one of my favourite songs, I feel an identification and brotherhood with this song like with very few. I think its because, much like Conrad's themes in the heart of darkness, it talks about how a man ultimately is alone in his journey, and a man's harsher critic should be himself, you answer to the man in the mirror every hour of every day
Great post. I would give it a second like if I could
Crystal Ball is on that same level if not way above it
Been a styx fan for years great band
Gowan's voice fits so perfectly in Castle Walls. Castle Walls is my all time favorite Styx song. Love it with Dennis DeYoung's voice and Gowan does just as incredible of a job in it
I agree
Yep
Man, we lived through some good times! (Class of '75)
'77!...still rockin'!
Class of 73 for me. Very good times. I still have my Styx albums.
class of 80 and still listen to all this old crap on my Klipsch cornwalls, very loud
Class of 73 for me!! Yep, 65 now!!
'76!
they don't make music like this nowadays..........great clarity on video.
Who would have ever written music like Tom Sholtz Boston back in the 70's truly more modern and still fits the bill
And when this song was written...music from the 50’s wasn’t being written any more, either...what is your point
He doesn’t read music. Plays by practice and ear. Amazing!
I agree with the jy part
And people forget that he sings several of the songs!! It's great to show it, for people to see JY!! He & JY really can play with amazing sounds with their guitars!! 🎸
Have always thought JY was underrated. And Tommy should get wings when he dies.
I saw Styx in 1977 at Birmingham hippodrome on the grand illusion tour , what a great night and still as good!!!
Two of my favorite Styx songs back to back. Love it! Wasn't yet born when this came out but grew up listening to classic rock and Styx is one of my favorite bands...might have to try and see them live this year.
Doesn't surprise me the dude listened to Leftovurture and wrote this gem haha awesome!
I really love Tommy Shaw a gentleman..best si ger .guittar player...handso.e..beautiful blye eyes.. bravo ¡¡
Don’t care what anybody says. This is the greatest classical rock band. Totally inspired and definitely channeling from the Angels.
I agree 100 %!
The aftermarket stereo would sound atrocious by today's standards, but back then, it was a gorgeous sound harmonized with those headers . . . . . .
Omg. Two great songs from a favorite album of my youth. Love it!
Anybody seen Tommy with Daryl's house? Tommy is such a humbled man.
You have that 100% right. I was fortunate enough to meet Him. Amazing singer songwriter. Definitely one of my favorite memories.
Thanks.
Todd's style of drumming really adds a new flavor to Styx,s great classic tunes
Yes, he was great. Tried not to laugh at Daryl trying to keep pace with Tommy.
@Jeff Tillman
Met tommy and john panozzo in '80, when i was following Styx on tour for three months. They were incredibly kind to us.John was a sweetheart. sad we lost him so young.
Two of my all time favorite songs! I will be 57 Friday
Seeing Styx Live is always a teary-eyed, exhiliarating experience...Forever fan..
Yea, me too.
Well said.
I've always had a craving to go to a Styx concert! I am such a huge Styx head! STYX FOR LIFE! :D
TEARY EYES HERE TO you said it fan forever
so true kelly in this video when they broke into sail away superstars memories made me tear up an i'm going to be 60
they are just as good , if not better live then on their albums
Brings back wonderful memories. They still have the passion and sound incredibly well, especially as others have faded
Talent. Talent. Heart. Dedication. Music as music was. Pre-2000. A WORLD that no longer exists. Turn back the clock.
This is by far the best version of Styx. Being a drummer I have to admit Todd is amazing to watch. As a musician, a good performance brings tears to my eyes, and Tommy is guilty of doing that over and over throughout his career. Everyone involved in this project should be extremely proud of their body of work....
I am also a drummer and saw them this past May. Todd is certainly one of the best in the business and Tommy defies age. Amazing voice!
Plus he tunes his drums to sit in the right pocket of "depth" to really let Tommy's higher powerful vocals soar here. It's truly a wonderful mix.
the base guitar and the drummer are very good but i miss the pinazo brother's. sad they both died. sorry i didn't spell their name right
@@frankibelt8447 Chuck Panozzo is still with us, and still performs at some of Styxs shows! John passed in 1996.
Dennis deyoung was the best era. However this is their best drummer. I've seen both line ups . John was still pretty good
Tommy's voice just gets better with age!!!
One of my all time favorite Styx songs!!!....Sometimes I still feel like a man in the wilderness and I will be 52 soon....
im 57 18 days off 15 years hevy opiates just moved northen Wisconsin loging country wildernes
@@williamhaugem7505 been there done that. Props!
The hidden gem .
The use of keyboards and synthesizers into classic rock songs is beautifully done here.
Now this was the best era for music. Sounds better today than it did back then, and it kicked ass back then!
what a great song/2020!
Tommy Shaw is a next level badass. This is an incredible performance! It sounds like I'm putting the studio record on. Unbelievable!
I was born too late 😔
Damn right. Tommy Shaw is a damn beast!!
He's one of the few old rockers who hasn't completely trashed his voice. He can still soar!
I was in my late teens. Im 57 and this is still some of my favorite music.
I never get tired of it. Its almost as fresh today as it was back in highschool.
Great memories.
i saw tommy and styx 6 months ago in charlotte nc,,,,he was fantastic!!!!!!! he still sounds the same as he did 20 yrs ago! crystal ball! he crushed it !!!!!! blue collar man, renegade, too much time on my hands, and on and on ! fan for life!
The album,the Grand Illusion,saved my mid-twenties lost young american,soul !!
I'd love to see Styx perform these songs in concert!
Oh my god! At almost 68 years old I love this!
Tommy clearly doesn't age like normal humans.
Tommy's Vocals!!!🔥OMG🔥 Spot On!!! Better than the studio Cut🎵Man in the Wilderness🎵HowOld❓🔥 Just Phenomenal !!!
love the high pitched screams tommy. sent chills up my spine. great beyond words!
Never get tired of hearing Tommy sing & play guitar❤
Styx is one of the greatest bands live I have been to many concerts and rarely seen anybody perform like they do
2020 and Tommy Shaw is even better. Keep it coming we need more great music now more than ever. Love you.
Hello, how are you doing? it’s nice seeing you here.
."Man In The Wilderness"
Another year has passed me by
Still I look at myself and cry
What kind of man have I become?
All of the years I've spent in search of myself
And I'm still in the dark
'Cause I can't seem to find the light alone
Sometimes I feel like a man in the wilderness
I'm a lonely soldier off to war
Sent away to die - never quite knowing why
Sometimes it makes no sense at all (makes no sense at all)
Ten thousand people look my way
But they can't see the way that I feel
Nobody even cares to try
I spend my life and sell my soul on the road
And I'm still in the dark
'Cause I can't seem to find the light alone
Sometimes I feel like a man in the wilderness
I'm a lonely sailor lost at sea
Drifting with the tide
Never quite knowing why
Sometimes it makes no sense at all
(I'm alive)
Looking for love I'm a man with emotion
(And my heart's on fire)
I'm dying of thirst in the middle of the ocean
I'm alive!
[Guitar solo]
Sometimes I feel like a man in the wilderness
I'm a lonely soldier off to war
Sent away to die - never quite knowing why
Sometimes it makes no sense
Sometimes it makes no sense
Sometimes it makes no sense at all, at all
Make no sense at all, at all, at all
Can't find the meaning of it all
Can't find a...
What's the song about? I sorta understand but Tommy is too deep for my brains...

Seriously.
This my friends is what we call genius 🍻🍻 Tommy is the Master of the universe 🤘
Man in the Wilderness is one of my favorite songs written by Tommy. Fantastic guitar backing by JY Young! Wow!
John Panozzo on drums (RIP) and his brother Chuck on Bass made up one of the tightest rhythm sections ever... you would be hard pressed to find better than the brothers Panozzo
Watching this tonight some 35+ years later it was hard to not be overwhelmed again by the magnificent songwriting and musical expertise on display here. It doesn't get much better than this.
Tommy Shaw sings as good as or better than he did when this album came out.
Tim Wilson Agreed with everything you said except it's not the same without DDY and to me Lawrence really sounds like shit but Tommy and JY sound great...
Now this is how you write a comment! (Ref. Alexander Rybak’s “That’s How You Write a Song”)
I agree with everything you said. I saw them live for the first time about 2 years ago & they blew me away. In no way is that depressing.
I was 13 Mississippi Valley Fair Grounds, Davenport IA, saw KISS ALIVE at 11 Dav IA never to young DENNIS to start✌️
I was fortunate to see them a few months after you did...in San Diego 1978.. Left the next day for Honolulu! What an awesome concert and an excellent way to start a new life!
Wow that sounded so good. I've always loved this album and boy they just nailed this performance.
FANTABULOUS! Woo-Wee! 1st Time For This MasterPiece in History! Yes, was @ Styx in Portland, Oregon Coliseum 76/77★ This IS Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy♥
Every man must meet his destiny.
Happy next birthday

Well said. This is a hauntingly melodic song. Pulls at the soul with utter sheer.
Crazy..
Heck i have this on my saved list just to watch over and over and over.
Lark Raines Tommy Shaw still kills it!
Love this song by Styx, amazing vocals by Tommy Shaw 🎤
Oh my god!!! Of my favorites!! Reminds me when i was 18 a man in the wilderness....desde Honduras como volaron los años
Those keyboards sounds from that mid 70's era are amazing!!
Castle Walls is in my top 3 Styx songs of all time. Such a GREAT tune.
And, Kansas live was incredible.
I don't want to burst your bubble because this is so great, but there is production live and then lots of post production as well on this, what can we do or say, it's the way of the business.
It's still freaking epic.
I agree with you.
But still, talent is real here.
@@moondawg3693 agreed watch tommy on daryls house tommy is still a very every good singer player writer amazing vocals
Always loved the band. Even way back from the beginning with DeYoung & the brothers Panozzo.
Really like the twin lead guitars. Reminiscent of Duane & Dickey, Thin Lizzy & the group that started it...., Wishbone Ash!
Father-in-law drove bus for them😊
Get Styx into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame :) love, judy
One of the best harmonizing vocal bands of all time!
Love the base line on Castle Walls.
That drummer is a BEAST !!!!
We love this song!🥰
The band should be in the rock and roll hall of fame. The first band to ever have 4 back to back to back to back platinum albums. That record alone is qualifying.
Tommy and JY are like; peanut butter and jelly, salt and pepper, sweet n sour, sugar and spice..... musical brothers...
True! 👍
Ditto!
This is one of the only good videos I've found of Castle Walls live. Thank you for posting it, such a great song!
How sweet it must be to own and preform such epic songs.. I love this band !!!
Freaking amazing! As good or even better than back in the day. My favorite ALL TIME band and singer songwriter. Styx/Tommy Shaw. A national treasure.
Man in the Wilderness is one of their best songs.
I agree
I always thought was a soft rock band
But little ol' blue eyes kicks some serious ass in this song
Herman Helmich You mean Tommy Shaw. hehe
Tommy Shaw, the androgynous male. I used to be so attracted to men of his look.
Which "blue eyes"? JY has them too...
If you always thought of them as soft rock you obviously never paid enough attention to James Young in The Wooden Nickel years
1980 or 1981. Paradise Theater album. Saw Styx live in Houston, Texas. I am now older.
The two greatest songs back to back on any album ever!
