I’m a Dennis fan. I love styx but Dennis was the mastermind behind much of it. I also love Tommy and JY obviously but I have a special respect for Dennis. That said, this song works so well with Gowan’s voice. Well done!

Plus LG has been in the band 25 years now without leaving. And he is a way better pianist and keyboardist than Dennis ever was or will be.
Gowan's voice in no way comes close to that of Dennis DeYoungs ,but, then again who does. My point Dennis is Styx, he wrote most of the Big hits and his creative genius is in a league of its own.

Back here in Europe, nobody has ever heard of these guys but damn, I can't be the only one who thinks this is one of the greatest songs ever written????
I lived in Germany in the early 90s and I had this CD. One morning I woke to find my German girlfriend jamming Pieces with my headphones on. She looked at and said, "oh my god, who are these guys!?".
Not quite right! Styx have always been on my horizon, I've got a lot of their records and even saw them live in Munich in the 90ies. And Germany is still Europe, isn't it? But I see what you mean. They should have been huge in Europe, but they were very rarely on tour here.
@@squonk86 Well, maybe he cannot do it 100%, but at least, he's fairly good on these songs. Without Gowan, it wouldn't have been possibbe to do these songs live after Dennis deYoung's departure.
@Manfred Altmann They could have found a lead singer that could at least sound like DDY and hit the high notes, sorry just not a fan of Gowan but love Styx since 1979.

My organ donor saved eight lives on December 7th, 2011 after she had been murdered on December 6th, 2011. I wonder of those eight individuals she save how many of us are still alive? She was declared legally dead, but in each of us still alive a piece of her is alive, in my body her left kidney survives and her family wanted to make meaning out of her tragic loss and she was only 19 when her life was taken from her. I have survived more than ten years with her organ in my body, she has filtered more than 330 tons of my poisoned blood... with her left kidney and she is the best friend of my life. All I am for her is a living tomb, epitaph and Emery stone. Pieces of Eight... I have a real silver piece of eight not cut into eight pieces... each piece if cut would be worth 20 dollars U.S. I am related to Admiral Sir Henry John Morgan on my mother's side of the family... my organ donor's first name was Morgan and that is so bizarre... thanks STYX for this song... I wish all of you the best... song reminds me of the price paid for my life in eight pieces and it was not silver... it was paid for in tons of blood... all red... all my love and prayers for the family of my donor, her father's only daughter and she was a ballet, lyrical and jazz dancer from age three to age nineteen... this is her in the first video I saw of her and I lost it when I first saw this video in 2014 after I signed legal documents to have contact with her father... an amazing lady... cut to pieces after she was murdered to save lives... she was killed by a drunk doctor in a car wreck and it caused a blood clot to her brain... she was number 7 in the competition and saved my life on December 7th, 2011... all of those things are so bizarre to me... se7en is the number of completion in ancient writing... all of the events have been strange to me for the past ten years... thanks STYX for this one song... my donor and the first video of her I ever saw of her... ruclips.net/video/r6GIOo6gBGM/видео.html
Nice story however for me it is somewhat sad because Dec 6th is my birthday. Sad that she left this world in such a way, beautiful in that she lives on in so many and that she went home to the Lord on that day. ❤❤❤
Saw Styx in concert. If you get a chance, prioritize seeing them. Go to a Styx concert. You will not regret it. Best concert I have ever attended. Kudos to Styx for awing their fans. Incredible.
To keep the record straight, the tour was not originally called the "Pieces of Eight" tour. For some reason it was called The Main Event Tour. I guess someone figured that "The Main Event" was going to be the big hit off the album, which it wasn't. The tour program featured a boxer on the front., and I have a couple of them somewhere. Now, a great story. (Well, at least I think so.) We were in rehearsals in Hammond In. , and I was the new guy on the crew. Now you have to keep in mind that Styx was, and probably always will be my favorite band of all time. It was my first day, and to my knowledge the band hadn't been in yet, and had, to my understanding, not even seen each other since they had recorded Pieces of Eight 6 months before. No when you record something with strong harmonies, there are 3 ways to do it. All at the same time in separate rooms, all in the same room at the same time, or laying down individual tracks when you can get some in the studio I had listened to Pieces of Eight extensively before I got the call, so needless to say, I was stoked when it came. I had turned down jobs with The Police, and Supertramp waiting for this call, and if it hadn't happened, I would have been devastated. Anyway, back to the story. The guys came rolling in one or two at a time in the morning. We ended up waiting for Tommy to arrive when all of a sudden we hear tires screeching and a jeep door slamming. In walks Tommy with a shit eating grin on his face saying something about the Indiana State Patrol, and laughing. I never did get the whole story. ANYWAY......when time came for the band to do their mic check, and they had each tested theirs individually, they needed to sing something together. I'll be damned if someone didn't count it off, and they did the chorus to Pieces of Eight DEAD NUT ON like they had been playing it for days. From that moment on, these guys walked on water as far as I was concerned I ended up not staying with them very long for personal reasons, but for a young rock and roll roadie out of Seattle, I was in heaven at least for a little while.
That is a great story. I read the Eagles used to warm up their harmony singing Seven Bridges Road in the dressing room, and regularly sang it as part of their mic checks. The response from their road crew eventually led them to actually perform it live in front of an audience, record it on a live album, and release it as a single.
Their harmonizing and music is so beautiful for that chorus -- I swear they touch on something spiritual. Every time I hear it, I start to tear up. Especially the end of the song when they play through it a couple times.
Fantastic album and tune from one of the best progressive rock bands of all time ! I remember playing this vinyl so much i wore the needle out...Tommy and JY have kept Styx alive for many years and Gowen on keys/vocals has filled the void of Dennis , who i believe was a control freak and Styx lives on without him !
@Durian Durian Uh yeah, Dennis is a BIOTCH. Jealous of others who have more creativity outside a stale existence in their former glory of Styx, and need someone new to REFRESH their spirit and resurrect their stifled musicianship under DDY ! Sorry for the truth !
@@trendwave5615 watch this for some truth ruclips.net/video/SrWjoaBAfz4/видео.html. Ironically this "song pieces of eight" is all about the money tree and love of money that causes people to lose their morals - the same one that JY and TS have been on for the last 20 years at Denis's expense. "Pieces of eight The search for the money tree Don't cash your freedoms in for gold Pieces of eight Can't buy you everything Don't let it turn your heart to stone"
I had the privilege to see them in Denver last month. Outstanding performance, they all give 110%. Gowan is superbly talented and shines on stage. The new music is awesome and the classics really resonated with the audience.
I love all of the members of Styx. But I literally struggled to take my eyes off of Gowan, because he was *incredibly* entertaining to watch at all times. Haha, I made a promise to myself this April to try and not focus so heavily on Gowan this time! Because I love watching the others play and be in their element, too! ((I'm totally looking forward to some of the heart-warming JY + Tommy BFF interactions)). Am I the only person whose heart utterly melts in complete awe over seeing those two shoulder-to-shoulder, dancing, goofing off or exchanging significant glances or making one another laugh whilst performing? Cause, I about die from cuteness overload every time. #Friendshipgoals. I'd love to find a JY to my Tommy. Everyone needs a friendship like that.
I've loved Styx since I was 16.... and growing up in Toronto was very familiar with Gowan who I love as well. When he joined Styx in 1999 I was overjoyed. Saw them in 1999 at Lulu's in Kitchener as one of my birthday presents that year. Always a good show. I far prefer Gowan with them as DDY was too controlling - everything had to be his way. Gowan is a great fit, is an excellent singer & musician in his own right.....love the current line up. They rock and are all amazing, they all sing, they're down to earth and love what they do!
I remember learning this song note-for-note on the guitar back in the 70s but the keyboard player couldn't handle his parts so I never got to play the song in public, how depressing. Now I see Tommy doing those parts on his guitar. Why the hell didn't I think of that?

A-PLUS,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,after all this time,,and changes,,,they can still pull this out...!.......brilliant performance,brilliant song.................................remember??????.I do...😐
Any band without its lead singer is nothing more than a cover band. I'm a huge Styx fan and always will be but I'll never pay again to see a band without their original lead singer.
I guess Dennis' break from Styx is pretty underrated because both Styx and DDY both continue to do well on their own. Saw Styx live in 07. They opened for Def Leppard, and as much as I love Def Leppard, Styx was by far the better show, even as an opener. I hope to catch Dennis in concert sometime soon also. And who knows, maybe someday they can reunite long enough for a few shows... :)
I've seen Styx since DDY's been gone also, and they're phenomenal. Lots of energy on stage. Everyone shows appreciation for the other band members. Love Gowan's craziness, he's a lot of fun to watch.
I saw them with Def Leppard as well. Styx blew them out of the water. My friends came to see Def Leppard they left the arena Styx fans. The most important part of the band for Def Leppard is at the sound board filling in vocals and guitar parts. Most of their show is in the can. Styx sings and plays everything. Always a great show.
Saw DDY solo and sounds great maybe even better then with Styx, like a fine wine gets better with age and personally not a fan of Gowan, can't hit the high notes which makes the songs.
Every time I think of Styx, I am reminded of the movie Phantasm, and the flying steel ball. Great sound track, messed up movie. It was the early 80's. These guys were awesome! Still are.
There's an old saying The Show Must Go On it's troubling when band members part ways Specially in the founding member but I must say this band got me through some troubling times in life with their music Tommy and James was a big inspiration in my guitar playing as it is Lawrence has earned my respect thank you Styx for keeping the music alive ;)
I like this version better than the one on the original album. I do get what some of the Gowan haters say about his voice not being great for some of Dennis DeYoung's songs, but on this one it is equally good or even better. I am really happy that the current lineup resurrected this song as part of the Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight tour. I think it is one of the more meaningful songs they ever did.
What a shame the band decides to play Pieces of Eight AFTER they fire the man who wrote it..but refused to play it while Dennis was in the band. That said-Larry Gowan does a fine job-he has a great voice as well.
They did this for the "Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight" tour, in which they played ALL of the songs from both albums to celebrate their biggest records. That's why they dug this up, and some other hidden gems as well.
Sharry Bucholz Saw them this past December here in El Paso. These guys can put on a show. Always loved their music and watching them live is by far the best concert I’ve been to so far. I really hope you enjoy the show!
Dennis de young was great for the band but became to controlling so they told him to hit the road. The band seems to enjoy the music again and their new Album is incredible! I have had the pleasure of seeing Styx with and without Dennis and Styx is a better band without Dennis. I have watched Dennis and his new band The Music of Styx and without his old bandmates it just isn't the same music. The New Styx have found a voice in Lawrence Gowan to keep the old Styx music alive while creating new powerful music. How is this bad?
Chris Jakubowicz - The Dennis crowd just can't accept that DDY was replaceable after all. To them, he is the end all, be all of Styx. And if he's not there, the band should have just quit. They really are that nasty. And they think we, who support Lawrence Gowan, are selfish. I've watched Dennis's band on RUclips here, to me they are just terrible. The person Dennis hired over sings the vocals on TS's tracks. And Dennis's voice is deteriorating. I listen with headphones on, and I can really hear how his voice sounds very old. Which I realize was bound to happen, for he is 70. To me, Dennis should just retire. He only does around 30-45 shows a year. I also noticed he doesn't play keyboards a lot during his concerts, which is strange since he's a keyboard player.
I agree Deborah. Dennis was a great performer but his time is past. Dennis De Young and the music of Styx band is a joke. Poor musicians and a need by Dennis to have them look like his old Styx mates. Dennis' new band mates look so out of place, its funny to watch them on You Tube all acting like Dennis wants them too. I don't dislike Dennis but he obviously had a control problem and that is the sole reason he isn't still with the band.
Chris Jakubowicz ~ Yes, Dennis's time is past. He should just be proud of what he's accomplished, and move on. And yes, he was a great performer. My main problem was when he tried to sue Styx. That was so wrong. In any company, once an employee can't, or won't do what is required for the job, the company gets rid of them in some form or another. This situation was no different. Dennis cannot do the rigorous touring that the band does, so they replaced him with someone who can & WILL. It's really that simple. When that whole thing started, Dennis literally wanted them to wait for him to get better, before they toured for the "Brave New World" CD. Well here it is, over 18 years later, and Dennis's is still ill...supposedly. And still can NOT tour regularly. I've said it several times before on these posts, and I'll say it again... If Styx had allowed DDY to stay, they would've been finished...period. Maybe that makes the Dennis crowd happy, but to me, the guys were still in their prime, and much too young to just pack it up, back in '99. And I also agree, their latest album, "The Mission", is excellent. It's nice to talk to someone who has some reasoning. Thanks for listening... ✌🎶😉
It's not bad. Every band member still is amazing. Tommy still has a bit of his 80s voice, Larry kinda sounds like DDY and can jam it out perfectly on keyboard, JY is getting up there in age but still can't stop rockin, Todd is a beast at drums, Ricky can't be any better, and Chuck is the same.
To this day these guys are one of the strongest and tightest rock bands; vocally and musically. They're incredible and they're truly built for live performance.. KEEP IT UP GENTLEMEN.. Thank You............!!
Despite James Young being the only original member, STYX is still awesome today.. As long as they have the trident of Gowan, Shaw, and Young... They are,and always will be awesome!!

Agreed with the exception of Lawrence vocals very good,I'm not a fan.

Sound pretty awesome forty years later
Ain't that the truth.
what killer harmonies,,,,wow!!..
Love all these comments! Hey did anyone else like Aku Aku..(same album I believe)?? I thought that was sublime, very mellow
トミーのギター、なんて美しいのだろう!!
Amazing album masterpiece🔥
I have the DVD of this concert from Tennessee, but boy I would have loved to seen them live in this.
Beautiful
Probably my favorite Styx song.
He's no Dennis DeYoung but Larry Gowan is excellent - the best replacement Styx could ever find - awesome singing and playing Larry
,,,,,.......W O W ....!...................................just wow........,,,,,land o' lakes,wi.
July 24 2020 Dayton Ohio OMG I cant wait!!!!!
Sherry Buckholz really?
I have to got to go see them
Thank you, since I live in Ohio!!
fantastico
Any band without its lead singer is nothing more than a cover band. I'm a huge Styx fan and always will be but I'll never pay again to see a band without their original lead singer.
sigh. Dennis was *one* of their *three* lead singers. The other two are still there.
Amazing
I'm sure it's easier for the musicians and the roadies, but I miss the days of seeing banks of keyboards and synthesizers around the keyboard player.
Keith Emerson!!
I saw Peter Frampton recently in that same theater
I guess Dennis' break from Styx is pretty underrated because both Styx and DDY both continue to do well on their own. Saw Styx live in 07. They opened for Def Leppard, and as much as I love Def Leppard, Styx was by far the better show, even as an opener. I hope to catch Dennis in concert sometime soon also. And who knows, maybe someday they can reunite long enough for a few shows... :)
I'm the opposite. I saw Dennis DeYoung in 2004, and have yet to see Styx.
I've seen Styx since DDY's been gone also, and they're phenomenal. Lots of energy on stage. Everyone shows appreciation for the other band members. Love Gowan's craziness, he's a lot of fun to watch.
I thought he same thing AF, STYX stole the show as far as I was concerned. I think the only reunion will be at their RaRHoF induction.
STYX ~~~~~ woven into the fabric ~~~ of my > life 💪❤🤘🤗
Hope they play this song
Brilliant
No prancing around necessary to distract from lack of musical talent!👍🏼
Every time I think of Styx, I am reminded of the movie Phantasm, and the flying steel ball. Great sound track, messed up movie. It was the early 80's. These guys were awesome! Still are.
GOOSEBUMBS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There's an old saying The Show Must Go On it's troubling when band members part ways
Specially in the founding member but I must say this band got me through some troubling times in life with their music Tommy and James was a big inspiration in my guitar playing as it is Lawrence has earned my respect thank you Styx for keeping the music alive ;)
NICE job Larwence Gowen
Love you Styx
Ohio 2011!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really up 2 b in a concert next year!
I feel bro I'm from Ohio and a buckeye too,go bukeyes keep in touch😎✌
I like this version better than the one on the original album. I do get what some of the Gowan haters say about his voice not being great for some of Dennis DeYoung's songs, but on this one it is equally good or even better. I am really happy that the current lineup resurrected this song as part of the Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight tour. I think it is one of the more meaningful songs they ever did.
What a shame the band decides to play Pieces of Eight AFTER they fire the man who wrote it..but refused to play it while Dennis was in the band. That said-Larry Gowan does a fine job-he has a great voice as well.
They didn't fire him,the idiot thought the band was his to command and sued them over the name STYX.He lost
I know for a fact that they would have preferred to play this song over "Babe" or "Mr. Roboto". They lost fans because of the soft rock and theatrics.
They did this for the "Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight" tour, in which they played ALL of the songs from both albums to celebrate their biggest records. That's why they dug this up, and some other hidden gems as well.
Saw them on this tour. They were outstanding!
The vocal harmonies are awesome.
😊❤GVB
At 3'38 WAOUW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sensational STYX
Good Evening my Love
A lot better than the studio version.
Fantastic, what more can be said!
Best Harmonies ever ....
As much as I paid for the tickets they better put on an awesome concert
Sharry Bucholz Saw them this past December here in El Paso. These guys can put on a show. Always loved their music and watching them live is by far the best concert I’ve been to so far. I really hope you enjoy the show!
Never will be able to mistake this voice..... actually a great version of a great song ....
Excellent.
Ahhh, the best transition Aku-Aku, cut out... what a shame.
Wowww
When that whole thing started, Dennis literally wanted them to wait for him to get better, before they toured for the
"Brave New World" CD.
And I also agree, their latest album,
"The Mission", is excellent.
Chris Jakubowicz Agree 100%! DDY’s ego and controlling personality disgusts me! Love Styx as is!!!
Great band, but not the same without Dennis. He is Styx!
This got bad reviews because the sheer awesomeness of Grand Illusion had not worn off
JY is the only remaining original member of Styx (with the occasional appearance from original Bassist Chuck Pannozo)
Kip Lambert Having a drummer with the talent of Todd Sucherman is a bonus.
Not a fan of Gowan
I LOVE TOMMY SHAW. HUDGE FAN. RAMA CONCERT. LARRY GOWN ALMOST STOLE THE SHOW.
Slower than the album but it kinda make the song better
Tommy shaw and James young are the only 2 original members, I believe
