I don’t want to be your dream crasher , but let me
    Tell you this.
    Im 100 % independent . Reefer hauler . Last year I drove 67000 loaded / empty and I grossed 204,000 .
I will never will understand , why you work under someone authority and pay them for doing nothing , when you do 95% of the required work to run a company on your own ??????
I don’t haul loads for less than 3.00 or less than 1,000 per day . And I go anywhere I want to go . I have the freedom . No one is telling me or controlling my rate .

Great interview! I loved this interview because Todd is a great example of a professional owner operator. Years of experience, obviously a master of cargo securement, successfully running a oversize step deck at Landstar!
When the mega carriers eventually replace all drivers with robots; Todd and those like him will still have more work than they want🤟.

In Europe 2500 - 3000 euro (3000 - 3600$) per month for HARD WORK, very fucking hard work in far worse road conditions than US (horrible traffic, narrow roads, etc.). Last yr ran 110k. Landstar dry van. I do two trips out of the house per month(18 days total per month). Gross was 370k.
Paid to the truck was 252k(after Landstar Co. and Landstar Agent cut.) After expenses(no truck pmt.) Net was 158k. Paid myself 60k. Have 0 debt except for house pmt. (Will pay off the day I retire). Put 50k yr into a tax deferred personal 401k(Keogh Acct). Left balance in Business acct as profit for future Capital Expenditures. You won't get rich as a Landstar O/O, But if you do it right you will have a nice retirement. The key is 0 truck payments. Pay Cash. Get trucks with rebuilt motors(paperwork), or factory reman engines. No DEF.. Make it legal, replace all parts necessary heat/cool, used apu. Don't buy the first truck you see. Get oil samples and rig dig done. No automatic trans(very expensive to fix or replace).
Get a 13 spd. 3.42 or 3.36 rears. Good fuel mileage is key.

    • @thetruckerslearningchannel3211
      @thetruckerslearningchannel3211 3 года назад +1

@hankhill747 the benefits a awesome here. He just touched on a few.
HUGE fuel, tire, and labor discounts. They handle IFTA, permits, cross border paperwork, and much more. Insurance isn't bad either.
Yes, you can do those things yourself. But it's going to cost you.
The biggest mistake/assumption people make, they can't do the actual math. It's not just 65%, it's much more if you know what you're doing

  • @gregorysagegreene

    Approx $2.22 per mile,
... for how many hours per week ?,
plus how much of that is
    net after expenses ?
I hear most owner drivers saying they won't bid for less than $2 anyway.
And could I make decent money
    with vanilla Dry Van Drop'n'Hook
(as a Business) with Landstar, instead of having to run Flatbed and tarp and climb up and get dirty all the time ?
I'm like 59 man, had to live out on the road for months at a time, and don't have the luxury of a home or the time to do laundry every day.
The problem is there is no honest laid out financial information in the industry for those who want to be owner operators.
I'm just having trouble figuring out how the guy is saying "you don't have to run hard" when a Truck has enormous expenses, and all I've seen out there so far in my 3 years of driving are all these companies peddling 'Fleece-Purchase' programs where the driver never gets to own a truck - but is forced to have some other strange guy sleep with him all the time ?
I forget how many times some Driver has painted 'blue-sky' to me about their company in a truck stop cafe. And I have never once come across an owner operator who would reveal a breakdown of miles, revenue, cost structures, and net to me . . .
You're telling me last year he ran an average of only 2,000 mi per week to do well? I ran 3400 mi a week dedicated for 2 months, reefer live load/unloads, just my '34' when I got back, and only saved $5,000 as a company driver. It exhausted me, and the company owner was pushing things on me that might have destroyed my career if I hadn't been smart enough to push him back on.
I have three (non-liberal) degrees, with honors, from a community college - one in Economics (business) and another in Accounting. And I had to go trucking this past 3 years just so I would not have to be homeless. But I would kill for the knowledge and/or business mentorship of how to run my own game, without having the Capital to start it.
Send me 12 months worth of legitimate spreadsheets and financial statements for a typical owner driver, Landstar, and I'll consider it? As a prospective business owner, do I not have the right to do my 'due diligence' ???
    🚛💨
    . . .

Cause long as I been in this game as owner operators they gonna make sure we keep spending whether we have our own authority or not. Thing is stay in the business long enough to survive. So with that said, how much is actually going to the bank? I hear ppl and companies say all the time the grossed this and that but as long as there are some sings/decals on the sides of your vehicle those stickers gonna keep trying to charge for different shit. In trucking you can make a lot quick and those fuks knows it.
But man I say that any owner op should be able to make it all cause we have to pay, profit, set aside, pay our own bills, and etc. So good luck too ya buddy... Stay safe out there

If both work 2 years and get laid off.
Yes the driver can get a job next day or next week.
Heres the thing. What the driver makes in 10 years, the DOC has made that in 2 years. He's 8 years ahead of the driver in income.
DOC can afford time off, find a new job or open up his own office.
Where as the driver who got laid off, can only afford a few weeks off without pay, no funds to start his own business. Driver has a short time clock to completely being broke, foreclosure, car repo , no food in the house
Doctors and lawyers will be ok on thier own .
    Just saying.
