Bernie, man you are a good Diagnostician...I am impressed how you diagnoses these vehicles..Man we need more people like you in the industry. I just subscribed to your channel and gave a thumbs up!
Absolutely brilliant diagnosis! Love your videos. Apparently the clutch replacement on these cars can go sideways six ways to Sunday! God help anyone who needs one and brings their vehicle to a flat rate shop or dealer without the correct tooling, knowledge and (most importantly) talent!
This is something that can only be diagnosed through knowing how the system works , symptomatic failure reports would help or TSB's but i think Mister Thompson said there weren't any . So with knowledge of the system and one of the best automotive oscilloscopes money can buy and of course the known how to use it you can be successful in diagnosing these string but true failures also . l personally thank mister Thompson for his time and effort thank you again and i hope to learn much more !
I like how you troubleshoot. You think out of the box. You take nothing for granted. You look at signals for answers. You remember the steps the transmission needs to take to go in the right gear. Its too bad auto repair is under appreciated and under paid.
This guy is awesome! I would love to see a diagram of the trans. as he talks through the operation. However.. without this mans skills we all might as well roll our cars off a cliff lol
I have a 2014 Ford Focus SE with 119K miles. Had the TCM replaced along with the two transmission actuators. Was running fine for roughly 2 days and it shut down on me while waiting at a intersection for the light to turn green.Tried to restart it. No cranking at all. Turned the ignition and nothing. Power was there, lights/turn signals, radio. Gages were not acting funny/fluctuating whatsoever. Both starter and battery are OEM/had been recently replaced at the Ford dealer. Gages were not doing anything weird. Swapped 15A F26 fuse for TCM with F27 fuse for A/C clutch relay. After I did that the car started right up! . No DTCs/service engine soon light. Before I swapped the fuses around I had disconnected the negative cable at the body post for a few seconds then reconnected. Still did not start. Doing this may have cleared any codes that may have been set. Not sure. When I took it to the dealer they drove it for roughly 10 miles/put their scanner on it and nothing. Car drove fine. Did not shut down on them. I picked it up/drove it back home from the dealer which is approximately 2.5 miles from our apartment. No problems. Later on I checked the continuity on the two fuses that I swapped around and both showed continuity. There was another fuse that I had checked that felt a bit loose. I pulled it out fairly easy. This fuse was not OEM though It is F38, also for the TCM according the owner's manual. Also for PCM so a lose fuse here could have cause a problem/short causing the PCM to shut the vehicle down. Not sure though. Replaced it with OEM fuse. Ran the car for a while no shut downs. Will drive it around the block for a while to see if it will shut down on me again. More to come. Thinking of getting rid of this car. Has been a pain. No longer trust it. Fine one moment the next it shuts down on you. Never had a problem with Ford cars in my life until now wth this little monster. 😈Anyone else have the same issue with their 2014 Ford Focus SE? Would like to hear back from you please.
We had "transmission overheat" on my GF's 2013 Focus DCT. Shortly after that i googled and there was thousands of reports of tranny failures. Car wasn't even at 90K KM. We sold it ASAP and got a MT Honda Fit. Never again will we buy American.
We have a 2014 focus se we over 340000 on it no problems . I did change transmission oil very regularly, we had the transmission update done when it was a recall, a very economical car to run
@@alvinepp2489 Good for you! Did you guys buy it brand new? No one else owned it before you? From what I have read on these transmissions they are sealed. So, there is no way for you to check the transmission fluid on a 2014 Ford Focus. That said, while you shouldn't have to do so, you can drain and replace the fluid if you wish. You wouldn't be damaging anything. And I say you shouldn't have to do so because the transmission fluid is supposed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. (in theory).😁 When a vehicle has a sealed transmission, as the 2014 Ford Focus does, it does not need to have the fluid checked or replaced every 60,000 miles or so. That used to be the industry standard before automakers were forced by regulatory agencies to start design “longer lasting” auto parts.
Don’t know if you’ll respond but worth a shot. Two years ago I had similar issues, a week ago, I had the same issue. Ford Dealership quoted me to replaced clutch, and hooks etc, but they just did it two years ago, and I’ve put less then 15k on it since. I have a feeling it’s not the clutch, and if it is, could maybe something else be wrong causing the clutch to go bad so quick. It’s very expensive to fix, they want 4,000 again, car is only worth 6.
@@LordJohnWick Im sorry to hear that you are also having problems with this car. It's you're call but, you should consider getting rid of that car. Its a money pit. I really liked my 2014 Ford Focus SE hatchback. Hung in there as long as I could. Extended warranty fixed it the first time. Replaced TCM, everything else they did to it was out of pocket. Had the battery and starter replaced, body control module replaced. I just about rebuilt this car. Transmission clutch /engine was the only thing not replaced. 😁 Once that transmission went down I was done. No reverse this time around. Trade it in for a 2021 KIA RIO S. They gave me 4500 as is for the Ford. Whatever you decide to do I wish you luck brother. Take care wherever you may find yourself.
Reminds me from the past! when they first started introducing computers! Ford was mainly a computer system that actually needed to be hard tested most of the time to get diagnostics! almost sounds like they're going back to the old way! new transmission system-hard mechanical testing in order to find diagnostics?
At some point, the clutches wear down and slip like a normal clutch. Can the scan tool indicate how much clutch life is left? What is the max mileage you have seen on an original clutch? Would I be crazy to buy a 2014 Fiesta w/150k on it that has had mild shudder for years?
Can I ask what was the problem with the clutch?? Had the same problem, the shop was not able to callibrate the clutch (the car was driving just fine but they accidently reset the cluch)and i was told that the only solution was changing the clutch for a new one and it was very expensive...
I’ve watched most all these videos. I cringe when I see someone make a comment like this; however I think this is worthy commentary. I’m a ford tech with 100 or so of these clutches under the belt. Following the factory flow chart you will see that the two input shafts speeds should match, the shaft may turn, but unless clutch is applied output won’t happen. I also may not be in a “clear” mind right now though 😆
I got this clutch/transmission problem on my sons 2012 Ford Focus SEL. 120k miles. It’s giving a P07A3 code. Shifts hard through gears and revs up high. Do you think the upper and lower shift actuators could be the problem or something else? Problem just started in past few days.
Hello! I have the same transmission in my Smart 453 from 2016, unfortunately I have some error codes in the gearbox, I reprogrammed with a new software but in vain. error codes: U0028,U010187,U010182. Do you know anything about them? thank you
I want to ask a question about my Ford Focus.I live is TURKEY. It’s 2015 model , 1.5 tdci powershift. Recently I had a warning on the screen as ‘’ Battery shut downed the system to keep itself’’.I called service and they offered to replace the battery because it is low or overed. WE replaced it with a new battery, after that I had another 3 more faults. 1- Engine fault 2- AutoHold is not used 3- Transmission is in limited mod. But nearly for 20 days these faults havent been apparead again.Authorized mechanics advise to change TCM and test again, İt may be need to be replaced all transmission unit . Fault code is P2855. What do you you advise us ? Can it be solved by reprogramming the TCM by computer ? , İ hope to hear from you worriedly

Have 2012 focus p087a no reverse..I swapped the actuators a and b and still same thing but now car won’t go into drive either..swapped back same thing..just p087a still..pinpoints test indicate tcm faulty but I’m not convinced
That clutch is an over complicated lot of nonsense, why bother??Why make it over complicated?Oh yeah,to stop us home diy guys! I love that scope, unfortunately i'd have to sell my mother to afford it,i'm going to miss her!! ;-)
The Ford Focus with this electric clutch is a piece of junk. Ford finally admitted it and ended u replacing the transmission/clutch on these. Still, problems continued with vehicle shuddering on acceleration. Frustrating situation for car owners.

Great Teaching! thanks
Good work. I'm having a problem where the tcm is not storing the programme for the transmission to shift. Any help thanks
Is the trans dry add dot 3
thanks thats really good help
Clean grounds battery ground on frame remove the paint clean the 2 grounds on frame under air filter for transmission
You are correct, May have surprised the tech with that simple sentence.
Or add dot 3
