Kaworu is very special character. He appears only this one episode and yet made huge impact not only for the story but literally the viewers too. He is one of the most popular characters in NGE. I don’t think any other character made the similar impression like him before
That still frame shot of shinji holding kaworu is one of the greatest shots in anime & changed my whole perspective on filmmaking when I first watched it, Evangelion is quite integral & influential part of my life, next episodes specifically are my favourite eps of NGE, hope you enjoy it!

I think this might be my favourite NGE episode. Kaworu's presence was so memorable to me and even though he appeared only in one episode, his impact felt so great to me. I'm also glad the Rebuild movies also extended Kaworu's screen presence.
Something that’s kind of amazing about Evangelion, whether by design or necessity, is the way that it truly does not care if its audience does or doesn’t get its story. It’s almost as if Anno is saying ‘Yeah, you’re caught up in all of this, but it’s not about that - it’s about the characters’. In the way the show just flings out all of this incredibly deep lore it creates a maelstrom of confusion that ensures the audience is never able to be entirely comfortable, and it also pushes the audience closer to the characters and their relationship as the only clear narrative to hook on to. Furthermore, because of how the story is unravelled, you have perhaps the deepest shift in tone I’ve ever seen in media. Compare the tone of episode one to the tone of any episode after A Man’s Battle. It’s stunning. And it’s incredibly effective at mirroring Shinji’s development. There are so many things about Evangelion that simply elevate to more than the medium.
Gosh this last stretch of episode is such a great payoff, and it's not even over yet. I forgot Kaworu is only there for a single episode and yet his presence and impact in the show is beyond reproach.
I'm so excited for these last two episodes two drop.
The scene with SEELE, where they tell him that Adam's body is with Gendo, was added in the Director's cut and it's been said by the community that it indeed added a plot-hole, though some people have various head canon to justify this
While I appreciate the conversation between Kaworu and Seele as it really does explain things that really needed to be said, it does make Kaworu's confusion at Terminal Dogma not really make sense. Seele told him that Gendo contained Adam so why would he think Lilith was the 1st Angel instead.

Just a small note: the exposition-y lake scene that is kind of tricky to reconcile with the terminal dogma scene was added in the DC.
The lilith/lilim name drops were there, but the whole convo with the Seele wasnt there.
It's impressive how he is able to decifer the whole lore so well on first watch. I mean I was a teenager back when I watched so of course I couldn't understand that much on first try but I'm pleased to see he managed to get almost everything right, even about the Yui own agenda part which is often ignored.
What an episode! The brutal amount of information that is given is insane btw your level of understanding of the show is crazy, definitely my fav reactor to NGE, keep it up my dude. Lov your reactions and discussions man.

Took 24 episodes, but I can finally say this now without it strange. I would recommend you to check out Devilman Crybaby in your own time. Context is interesting in that the original manga was released way way back before Evangelion, which takes clear inspiration from Devilman. But Devilman Crybaby the latest anime adaptation released in 2018, well after Evangelion, taking quite a lot in return from Eva. An interesting feedback loop is created, and I think starting from this point the similarities REALLY start to show
Can’t think of many people if anyone who rank Devilman Crybaby over Evangelion, but both certainly have their own merit and appeal

@daniaaal yeah no worries, just two kinda warnings so to say. Firstly, please finish the original 26 episode run of Eva and End of Eva before Devilam Crybaby if you haven't already. Second, I hope what I said doesn't make you think these series are super similar to each other, they're not. But their heart and big picture themes are in many ways, and often those who appreciate Eva appreciate Devilman Crybaby

33:40 this is a common misconception among the fans, that it is an inconsistency Kaworu was informed Gendo had Adam's body but he still mistook Lilith for Adam until the last second. Rather, the directors cut does NOT create an inconsistency because...
Kaworu was aware that the humans were cloning Adam's body, since he identified Unit 02 as a clone of Adam AND that he could not merge with Unit 02 because it already had a soul within it: the implication is that Kaworu is seeking a body of Adam with which to merge his soul, and that he is aware of the likelihood of other clones. So, seeking out the nearest body without a soul then led him to Lilith, and he was clearly only able to identify Lilith visually and not via AT field (Lilith, soulless, may have even lacked one?)... Kaworu being aware of Gendo's possession of Lilith changes nothing, as he could not determine it was not Adam until he saw her directly.
So there is no inconsistency: Kaworu had Adam's soul, he needed a body of Adam, he couldnt use Unit 02 which had a soul, Gendo had Adam's original body but also employed Adam's clone(s), Kaworu could not distinguish between Adam and Lilith at a distance, thus he approached the soulless Lilith body mistaking her for Adam cos he could only identify her visually. Where is the inconsistency here?

I think the director's cut for episode 24 actually is worse than the original one. Especially because of the scene with Kaworu and Seele which create a plot hole. I would have suggested you to watch the original one but people on Internet are so obsessed with the DC all the time.

I think you should react to Fate Zero after finishing Evangelion. It's one of the best action anime out there. Intriguing story, rich characters, great fight scenes, it has everything.

I look forward to your analysis to the End of Evangelion. I suspect you will watch the last 2 episodes, and I will be here for that, but I really wish people would just skip them and accept the movies as the last 2 episodes' proxy. I watched these as they came out and had to wait years to get the real ending. you have the option of getting it immediately. As always, great analysis and I am glad I spent the time to watch until the end!
Not sure if 'the Netflix' kept the original titles, but when I watched them , the episodes were titled 'Air' and 'A Pure Heart For You'. I noticed the Wiki page titles them differently.
End of Eva is quite the movie, but I have to say I really loved the 2 final episodes of the anime. I understand why they're disliked but I was digging every moment of them.
So I am glad they exist, I think in unison with the EoE it makes up for a nice conclusion to the series.

Haven’t watched the review yet but one thing I never liked is that shinji knows this kid for all of 20 minutes and then acts like he was his best friend all along
well, shinji didn't know kaworu for just 20 minutes, just that as filmbuff mentioned, they should've extended the plot points to two episodes. I loved Kaworu's presence
We dont really know how long he hanged out with him,it could have been a day,it could have been a week,but it was definetly not "20 minutes" like you say. Another thing to take in to account is Shinji's emotional and psychological struggles,he said so himself: Kaworu made him feel things he never felt before,he was in an all time high and got brought back to the bottom feeling betrayed forced to KILL someone he connected with,it should be painfully obvious how he was able to impact Shinji in such a deep level at this point of the story,i get you dont like it,but your reasoning is very simplistic and heavily short sighted.
Shinji at that point is desperate and isolated he thinks he can't rely on anyone anymore. Then this person appears out of nowhere and he's an ideal for him and loves him unconditionally. I would react that way too if that person betrayed me too.
