Before people say this, the final 2 epsiodes look like this because of time constraints, not because they run out of budget.
The abstract-like presentation and highly amiguous ending were very controversial back in the 90's. Because of this, many people believe, even 25 years later that the movie was made in response to the backlash, thats a myth, the movie was being made even before the final 2 episodes came out.

very glad to read this, it's a myth that became quite annoying...
Cause if one thinks about it, anime funding don't work that way. Bad planning can kill the budget, but usually it's not like it magically "ends", as if it was handed down each week xD
Today there is a bit the narrative that most of people hated these two episodes: it's true that they shocked everyone, but a lot of people liked it or came to appreciate it after thinking and re-thinking about it furiously (raises hand...)
About the movie, I knew that too but honestly I think here part of the myth could be true. I mean, maybe it's 100% false but I think it's very possible that part of the audience reaction and the feelings the staff and Anno* had about it permeated into the movies...
*Anno's opinion about the last two episodes waved a lot through the years, but I remember that him and a good bunch of other GAINAX names actually defended it passionately even in very old interviews
(even edgy boy "Eva was only a professional thing with no emotional involvement" Yoshiyuki Sadamoto xD)

Many others have already explained why these last 2 episodes turned out the way they are, and why Anno ended up making EoE. The alternative titles of the 2 "segments" of EoE will definitely give you some hints as well ;) Again, since there is an intermission for the movie, you final edits can definitely be split into 2 which should make editing a bit easier.

I think that you don't read the comments yourself but it is true that the movie "The End of Evangelion" is the "true" ending of the story, we can know this because scenes from the movie were shown in the next episode preview at the end of episode 24, only in an unfinished state, but Anno has also been vocal in defending his vision and artistic decisions behind these last two episodes. They and the movie complement each other they're not two different endings but rather two sides of the same coin and both are canon. Eva is my favorite anime of all time and I think both these final two episodes and the movie are both masterpieces of storytelling and proof of Anno's visionary mind as a creator in two very different ways, I'm sure you'll enjoy both but if you feel there is a lack of conclusiveness to these last two episodes the movie will definitely settle all your concerns.

@@Amaling honestly, even aknowledging its technical qualities, I really didn't like it back in the days... Didn't even hate it, but I found it unnecessary after the tv finale.
it was like... I dunno you know it was like if someone came and just explained you exactly how 2001 A Space Odissey's Monolyth works, why it works and who made it (ok the books sort of do it but it's another matter xD). Which funnily enough it's a big issue I have even MORE with the Rebuild Movies and the clearer lore Anno disclosed around them.
But thinking about it years and years ago, and after a rewatch, I think I'm glad EoE was made: Aside my personal preferences, I think it's masterfully directed, looks amazing, and it's become iconic anyway, creating discussions, ideas and points of view (both in the viewers and in the animators communities) that made the whole media grow. Basically exactly like these iconic last 2 episodes.
I mean, even if I'd hate the movie (and I don't anyway), just its cover art... how goddamn iconic is it? No question about it xD

You seem to have gotten yourself confused. Both the film and final episode are the ending of Evangelion. The final episodes are rushed and unfinished but provide the abstract emotional context. Its not really a matter of preference - they are both the ending. If I had to choose - I'd say the end of evangelion is far more important than the final episodes and if anything the episodes of the original series should be seen as elaborations on the movie (which is the original intended ending by the way). The plot, characters and most importantly - the main theme of the show dont wrap up until the movie.

As always, amazing analysis. You really caught on to a few things, but you won't get some answers until you get to EoE, so just keep doing your awesome thing! Also, you can divide EoE into 2 parts, as the movie actually treats itself as two segments as well, very similar to the regular episodes with an eye catch in the middle. And, you can skip the Rebuild series, it's nothing more than a cash cow. The films are nothing compared to the original series, or EoE. They were literally just made to turn Eva to a new, more modern audience, as if it was the next Gundam franchise.

    • @daniaaal
      @daniaaal 11 месяцев назад +5

Actually, I disagree with you for the most part about the Rebuild movies. Yes, partly it's a way to get more money (but which mainstream show/movie isn't a way to get more money?). I think the Rebuild movies lives up to its name for the most part. A lot of the meanings in the movies aren't translated well for ordinary audience who didn't really pay attention to the deeper themes in the franchise, but for someone like Filmbuff who's very critical, observant and intelligent, he'll definitely pick up on things quickly. I found closure in the Rebuild movies towards the whole series, compared to if I just stopped at EoE.

    • @GCSlala

Anno wanted to make a new evangelion project since 2000. He felt that the anime industry was growing stagnant and hoped to change that even if just a little. At the start, Anno wanted someone else to direct it, but since no one wanted take the pressure of directing a new eva project, he decided to do it himself.
While I do agree (and even Anno himself said this) that the rebuilds were meant to make more money (so that khara would have a foundation and be able to hire and make talented people) and initially to attract a new audience, I find very reduntant to say that they are a cash cow. No creator works in a project for 21 years out of greed and/or spite, specially someone like Anno.

eva is a gigantic cash cow in japan, rebuilds or not, and the movies aren't even an actual rebuild, as in a standalone, they pretty much require you to have watched the original series. in other words, it's a big stagnant fanservice circlejerk, no matter whatever his intentions may have been 20 years ago.

By getting rid of all context, you're clear to have your characters hash it all out.
Put them all in one room in the Void, they can appear when needed. Bring back the dead, no problem. Reuse shots with different outfits, it's all symbolic anyway.
I enjoy exploring characters, but I want that exploration to be grounded in a concrete world, that's my preference.
Now, this Void in particular was really well done, but I still take offense to the Void as as a setting.
