Feliz Jueves!!!
That might be a bottle thrown in the ocean but once I told you to watch Monster by Urasawa and here is a new reminder. The story fits perfectly with your channel and analysis.
Didnt monster won the last poll for next anime after fmab
*THE* tsundere queen has arrived
Living for these reactions every week. Best Eva first time watcher analysis I've seen and I can't wait to see what you make of the later episodes!
That's how I felt when he was doing AoT
Asuka’s German sounds so funny 😂
According to the Wikipedia entry:
"For the German language terms used in the scenes with Asuka, staff asked for help from an American employee of Gainax, Michael House, who exploited his basic knowledge of the language, acquired in high school, and a Japanese-German dictionary from a local library. According to Anime News Network's May Callum, Gainax did not pay attention to the dialogue's German grammar, believing the series would never be successful enough to be watched by native German speakers."
@@mmattson8947 I'm a native German speaker, and to this day I don't understand a single German word from Asuka. At least Shinji's "Baumkuchen" was clear and cute.
@@szeltovivarsydroxan9944 With the subtitles I can hear it but otherwise definitely tough. Same in AOT songs though. "Bauklötze" is a good example. I can make out some words but a lot of it is hard/impossible to understand. Found a good cover of it though that is made by a german and thus super clear in comparison.
Both of these introduced characters I love so much, can’t wait for you to react and analyze them onwards
1:42 That is a funny transition with the slaps. :D
3:50 I like how Shinji has no reaction to that. :)
5:45 Asuka's expression looks great. 8:24 Misato is always thinking something else too.
8:35 That jumping from ship to ship is on of my favourite moments. A 'sense of wonder' moment. :)
"I'm really into this!"
You don't say. :D
7:38 I like that they did that though as a german myself it sounds VERY rough. Definitely can't blame the voice actress though. "Hey say these lines in another language you have never heard/spoken before" is a tough ask.
Love the Fly Me to the Moon in this episode, one of my favourite versions
I originally saw this anime as it came out in the US, in English. It's great being able to revisit it with the JP cast. I missed Megumi Hayashibara's VA work as Rei, but I forgot how much I loved Asuka's VA Yuko Miyamura! An'ta Baka??? Tsundere queen!
You don't see Freud yet? You will.
Asuka, the source of millions of memes
Our resident German has arrived
Omg Asuka is finally here! Really ezcited about the next episodes and her dynamic woth the rest of the cast and Kaiji my man.
Great reaction my dude
"... the impact these characters are about to have..."
heh
I really feel for Kaji; he seems like James Bond, but he's just a dork like the rest of us.
☆About the origin of the names of the characters appearing from this episode
"Souryu Asuka Langley"
The Japanese surname "Sohryu" comes from the "Sohryu" of the Imperial Japanese Navy's aircraft carrier during World War II. The name of the aircraft carrier is written in kanji in Japanese and means "blue dragon", but as it is, it is not realistic as a Japanese surname, so the kanji of Asuka's surname has been changed to one that Japanese people would think is "well, it's possible" 😅 And the Western-style surname comes from the "Langley", a light aircraft carrier of the US Navy that was deployed to the front lines against Japan during the Pacific War.
However, as I posted in my reaction to the first episode, among the main characters, the only ones named after Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft carriers are the adult female duo Misato and Ritsuko, so Asuka's surname is irregular for naming a child. Ayanami is the name of an Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer, so...
However, this distortion is resolved by the later character name change in "Rebuild" 🤗
"Kaji Ryoji"
"Kaji" is the Japanese word for "rudder" and, as per the theory of EVA character names, it was named after a word related to sailing. However, this is not the kanji that literally means "rudder", but was changed to the kanji with the same pronunciation as "Kaji", which means "prayer to God" in Shinto, a uniquely Japanese religion.
I think the name "Ryoji" was a character in "The World in Five Minutes After" by Ryu Murakami, a favorite of director Hideaki Anno. The same goes for Shinji's classmates "Toji Suzuhara" and "Kensuke Aida". After the end of EVA, director Anno released a live-action film version of "Love & Pop", originally written by Ryu Murakami. By the way, Ryu Murakami's "The World in Five Minutes After" is a novel that depicts an alternate world where Japan did not surrender in World War II.
I learned these trivia facts from a book called "Nazo-Bon" (a book of enigma) that was published around the time of the broadcast of EVA, and it was a collection of theories. (It is a Japanese proverb that refers to the appearance of many bamboo shoots emerging from the ground after the rain all at once, in a short period of time.) However, it has been almost 30 years since I read it, so I apologize if I have misremembered it.
m(_ _)m←Japanese Dogeza😂
Great analysis, as always.
OMG, they took the time to give Asuka underwear in this remaster. She was not wearing them in the original, lol.
Asuka is half Japanese half German I believe.
Amazing discussion. I enjoy how you build on theories based on what the show has already displayed in bits and pieces. Keep up the great work. :D
I've been waiting for this!
Evangelion is one of the highest attainments of Japanese manga and anime. It is difficult to understand and has strong Japanese values. However, the final chapter, Shin Evangelion, was a beautiful and perfect ending. Enjoy!
Asuka THE best girl has finally arrived!
Best girl on the scene!
Is there a possibility of you doing 2 eva reactions per week?🙏🏻
As much as I would love to just binge the entire reaction series right this moment, there is so precious little of EVA, and I want it to last. Every episode should be a weekly event.
Ya empiezas a descifrar a Azuka
Great stuff!
I'm the backstory man.
yeahhhh babyyy that's what I've been waiting for
The Wikipedia entry (which is definitely heavy on the spoilers, although this isn't) has this about Asuka's name:
"For the character's name, Anno took inspiration from Asuka Saki, the protagonist of the manga Super Girl Asuka, written by Shinji Wada; for the surname, he merged the names of two ships used in the Second World War, the Japanese World War II aircraft carrier Soryu and the American aircraft carrier Langley. Despite her multi-ethnic origins, the staff made Asuka's skin the same color as that of Rei Ayanami."
Almost none of the characters in the show have matching skin tones. Take a close look any time multiple characters are in the same frame. Shinji's skin is darker than Asuka's, whose skin is still way tanner than Rei's almost white porcellain skin. The same goes for the adult characters.
@@szeltovivarsydroxan9944
The reference for that particular claim is:
Neon Genesis Evangelion Film Book (in Japanese). Vol. 7. Kadokawa Shoten. p. 67
I don't have that book and I don't speak Japanese, so I can't comment if there is something wrong with the translation or interpretation.
You can debate the authors of that book if you want.
Up to this episode, Rei has been mostly under indoor fluorescent lighting (blue and pale), while we have only seen Askuka under bright sunlight.
When we get to the episode with the school poolside or the meeting in Misato's apartment, we can do a better comparison of skin tones.
Asuka hype!
Im citing philosophers like Schopenhauer and Freud? This man is gonna have a blast with Monster
Man citing philoshophers reminded me of Psycho- Pass .... I wish he reacts to that I know he'll love it.
