The Kohistan Story: Killing for Honor

  • In May 2012, a grainy cellphone video emerged in a remote and deeply conservative village in northern Pakistan. The video showed four young women singing and clapping in a room as two young men danced to the music. The village elders saw the celebration as a blatant defiance of strict tribal customs that separate men and women at gatherings, and a decree was issued for those in the video and their families to be killed as their actions were deemed 'dishonorable.'
    The women and one of their sisters, aged just 12, were allegedly imprisoned for a month and tortured before being killed. The men went into hiding but three of their brothers were shot dead.
    Every year, nearly a thousand people are known to be killed in the name of honor in Pakistan. Many more go unreported, considered a part of everyday life - but the killings in Kohistan became national news after the surviving brother of the victims made it his mission to seek justice. VICE News host Hani Taha travels to Pakistan to meet Afzal Kohistani to investigate one of the country's most perplexing honor killing cases, three years on.
    Produced by Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Saad Zuberi, VICE News finds out some of the grimmest truths about the pervasive culture of so-called honor killings in the region.

      @Belinda Babettethe child marriages recorded include:
      Theodora Comnena was aged 13 when she was married Baldwin III of Jerusalem (1158)
      Agnes of France was 12 when, widowed, she was married to Andronicus Comnenus, Byzantine Emperor (1182)
      Isabella de Valois was 8 years old when she was married to Richard II of England. The marriage was never consummated.
      Caterina Sforza was betrothed aged 9 with Girolamo Riario,
      Aisha (age 9; approximately), betrothed to Muhammad in 623 CE[3][4] although estimates vary from 6 to 13.
      Margaret Beaufort, (age 7; approximately) was married to John de la Pole (age 7) in 1450 by the arrangement John's father.[5] The marriage was annulled in 1453.[6]
      Joan of France, Duchess of Berry (age 12), betrothed in a wedding contract at age 8 days old, she was officially married in 1476.[7]
      Anne de Mowbray, 8th Countess of Norfolk (age 6) was married to Richard of Shrewsbury, 1st Duke of York (age 4) in 1477. She died at age 10 and he, as one of the Princes in the Tower is believed to have been murdered at age 10.[8]
      Rukhmabai (age 11) was married in India to her husband (age 19).[9] After a lengthy court battle, the marriage was dissolved by an order from Queen Victoria and the publicity helped influence the passage of the Age of Consent Act, 1891, which increased age of consent for girls in India, married or unmarried, from 10 to 12.[10]
      Janakiammal Iyengar (age 10) was married to the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.[11]
      Ushabati Ghosh (age 11) was married to the Indian physicist Satyendra Nath Bose when he was twenty.[12] Bose, not keen on marriage so early in life and while still attending college, only did so on his mother's insistence.[13] They had nine children, two of whom died in early childhood.
      Nujood Ali (age 10), an arranged marriage by her father to a 30-year-old man[14] in 2008.[15] Coverage of her self-presented application for divorce later that year led to the legal age of marriage in Yemen to be raised to 18.[16]
      Empress Xiaochengren (age 12) married Kangxi Emperor (age 11) because Empress Xiaozhuangwen thought that Oboi's power was too strong so that she wanted the emperor could get together with general Sonin

      @Belinda Babette this list shows that it was legal to marry kids in old times .. so why you think that MUHAMMAD (p.b.u.h) was only one who married a kid and showing him wrong?? And secondly do you know if a woman can have half testimony of a man and then she can have half from her father's testimony.. so she is having equal to a man's wealth :) because half from husband and half from father and a man cannot have from woman's testimony so actual you can say woman is having more then man.. i told you that your information is incorrect.. but i appreciate that you are trying to learn islam..

    Kohistan is a tiny region with less than half a million population, in a country of 182 million people.
    Country with 11 major spoken languages, countless segregated tribes with their microcosm of language, attire, educational standards, religious affiliation, moral/ethical code and standing; secular to extremely religious; murderous / violent to exceptionally hospitable. Not to mention 60 million painfully westernized urban populace.
    Not only is Kohistan unrepresentative of Islam, middle-east or even Pakistan, but generalizing one small tribe to the spectrum of diversity in a country or religion is very, very dumb.

Buddhism and Jainism came from this culture but they denounce things like this. Islam on the other hand promotes gender separation in masjids and in public areas. Islam is not helping.

    • @SomaliKing
      @SomaliKing 8 лет назад +4

      +Zoroastrianism-Islam-Sikhism Again South Asian culture does not mean 'Islam' just because women and men pray in different parts of the mosque doesn't mean they are less than men and also Orthodox Christians don't mingle while in the church does that mean they promoting gender separation?

    • @terratremuit4757
      @terratremuit4757 8 лет назад +2

      Omar Dinho Not all Orthodox Churches practice gender separation in the liturgy, and none practice it to the extent that Islam does. In Orthodox Christian countries are there honor killings against women? No. I'm not Orthodox by the way, so I really have no reason to defend their practices. My point is the Islam encourages the already present gender separation in Pakistani society. It is not helping. Buddhism and Jainism, two religions that are actually from that same society, wouldn't tolerate this like Islam does.

      What a bass akwards comment!
      I'm tired of people equivocating between some pointless demagoguery said by prez-bush and extremists attacking civilians to garner support for an insane theology. We didn't invade iraq to spread christianity (god knows why we actually invaded) or to punish non christians. Dubya was just pandering to the religious right to get there political support for the war. This is in no way equivalent to terrorism.
      In regards to honor killings, and whether this is caused by culture or religion, there is no distinction to be made. The islamic world has a HUGE problem with awful repressive customs which hurt women especially. I'm not saying that such customs cant or have never existed anywhere else, but currently the places where they are most common in in the muslim world, probably because of a strict reading of theology. The generic 'culture' really does not explain the motives of people who are willing to kill there own daughters Face it, what is the impetus for these customs if not some ideology. And when the dominant (only) ideology in the region is islam (the law in pakistan is sharia, the clerics have immense power, almost everyone is a believer) it will inevitably have to take the blame for barbarism.

    In America, everyone involved would be tracked down and given life or execution. This is really sad

    I know a girl who was in Pakistan she was like my niece she was killed due to having a boyfriend, the dad with some other guys beat her to death. The Police agreed with the dad that she had choked on something when eating and died...The poor mum was sent out and wasn`t aware of there intentions, shes lost the plot now...

    Can someone explain to me how Vice always manages to find people who are otherwise impossible to find? Or do thinks that are otherwise not doable? Like not being able to record in peoples houses and finding a man who's in hiding with his family.
