My TC and little Savage axis 7mm-8 youth model both shoot the Hornady superformance so well you can cover a 3 shot group with a dime
It still boils down to each individual rifle. We can have the exact same rifle built one right after the other, and they will shoot the exact same ammo with different groups and point of aim. Please test a barrel deresonator and see if you can make one of the worst for your gun shoot as good or better than the best. THAT would be a good test of an item. Being able to tune your rifles for the type of ammo and bullet style and weight best suited for the type of hunting (elk vs pronghorn for example) Or for the shooter (reduced recoil perhaps) would be more efficient than buying a dozen boxes/brands and finding a few that work and eight partial boxes sitting on a shelf.
You’re exactly right! For me that’s part of the “fun.” Learning that everything is so relative and specific has taught me a lot. That’s an excellent point as well about trying to “tune” a barrel to a round it doesn’t necessarily like as well. Those heavier rounds may be much better for elk, so working with it so it shoots them well could be a great project! Thank you for your input, and thank you for watching!

I've fired a few hundred rounds of different manufacturers and weights through my Axis 308. For some reason I always find myself going back to S&B. I use their 168gr hpbt's (some sites list them as "match" although it's not printed on the box). I also get pretty good results with Freedom Munitions new (they also sell reman) 168gr match. For my 6.5 I stick with their 140gr fmjbt. If I can keep from jerking the shot both rifles are moa all day.
@@ReviewThisThing lucky gun ner had S&B for 32/bx and Target sports USA is around 27 I think. Freedom Munitions is their own thing and they're currently out of stock. Happy shooting.
@@ReviewThisThing Update: Went to a Lvl 1 Precision Rifle class last weekend (Aug 28). Ringing steel at 400y with what I had of the Freedom Munitions 168gr Match- still out of stock. Weird thing, according to Strelok with the adjustment I needed to hit I was shooting faster than the advertised muzzle velocity...by 114fps
Great job evaluating the different rounds, can you let us know your barrel length and twist? I am doing a similar test with my Remington 700 with a 20" 5r heavy barrel with a 1:10 twist, and it seems to like heavier bullets.
The best info I can find (and there's not much out there) says that the Cascade in .308 has a 1:10 twist. That may have a bearing on its performance with heavier bullets.
@@ReviewThisThing I just went back and watched the first video in this series. The Cascade definitely likes the 150gr loads better -- especially the Norma. Depending on the specific load, it looks like those would be good for elk out to 300, and for deer out to a reasonable range for most shooters. Sectional density is a little light, so penetration at longer ranges would be pretty sketchy.
I’d be interested to test their Ecostrike 150 grain. I will say I haven’t had a pass through yet with the 150 grain Norma that aren’t the Whitetail, but not deer only went about 50 yards.
Thanks for the videos x3. I have several 308 rifles as its my favorite rifle round. I had also noticed my bolt action grouping be very different than my DD5 depending on bullet grain. For some reason I always thought my variations where due to varying conditions, locations (move around alot from state to state), and just my variance from day to day.. instead of realizing that it may really just be gun performance preference in bullet type/grain/loads. I just ordered some 110gr ammo as well as 125. I'm very curious how much the ballistics will change with such light bullets out of a 308 platform. I hope to see video #4 soon.
I’m so glad you found out videos helpful! Thank you for letting me know. I never would have guessed there would be hat much difference. Part 4 will be coming in the not so distant future - make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss it 😊
Got an HMR in 308, Bergara b14 barrel obviously. Same as the cascades barrel. I've found it to be half MOA consistently with the hornaday superformance 165s sst and Nosler Accubond 165s. Probably gonna try the Hornaday Black 168 next
I’m currently trying to find what works best with my b14 hmr, just purchased some 165 sst a couple of days ago. Have you found another round that works better?
I actually filmed this one twice (That’s why the thumbnail is different). I shot them in a different order in this video and got very similar results both times. BUT - I’m sure that does impact things. Thanks for watching!
Those SSTs are definitely fast. I have one 308 that doesn’t shoot them too bad , but my Tikka 308 doesn’t shoot them very well. The tikka shoots 168/165 the best, the Mossberg shoots 150s better.
This test is VALID for Bergara B-14 Ridge RIFLE ONLY ! Some people think as expensive ammo is the best ! But sometimes it fit like rocket fuel to the tractor
The Cascade does have a Bergara barrel, but all guns can obviously be different. Bergara recommends 168gr and 175gr Federal Gold Medal Match, and Berger 175gr. My Cascade doesn’t like anything heavier than 165gr so far. I’d try Norma Whitetails first.
I have two 308s...a RA Predator and an Interarms Mark X. The both like the Federal Nontypical, Barnes, and Sellior & Bellot. All 150 grain. Anyone else have luck with the S&B?
I did! The video is coming, but out of this Cascade and a Savage 110, the ONLY load that would shoot worth a hoot was Barnes 150 grain. Here is the Savage video. ruclips.net/video/cFHHT4PQu7U/видео.html
Very thorough ammo test "video 1-3" With this being said, are you continuing to hunt with the Norma ammunition, or has your ammo tests given you reason to swap to another bullet?
What's your barrel twist rate and length? I would think that matters more than the ammo. My 18" ar10 in .308 shoots sub moa at 100 yards with anything over 160 grains. The 150s fly all over the place lol
@@ReviewThisThing I also drive an hour or so to a 100yd indoor range. It gives much better results to zero and lets me adjust the scope in the field. If there's one near you I recommend checking it out!
In Argentina 20 ammunition, Hornady P.H U$D 100, Barnes U$D 100, Hornady Outfitter U$D 85, Federal U$D 130, Hornady SST U$D 75.we can't do this here because of the prices!!!!!
Great series you got going here! I have a different rifle(Browning X-bolt Max Long Range), but then I've also had some pretty good groups with other ammo that might be worth a try in your Cascsde. The Norma Bondstrike 180-gr shot quite well in mine, might be the exception to the rule as far as heavier bullets go with your rifle? Also, Hornady loads a 165-gr Superformance SST that shoots very good for me. Federal has a round that sends a 168-gr Berger Hybrid Hunter, hasn't done that great for me but might work for you? And one that I have yet to try, the Sig Elite Hunter Tipped 165-gr, essentially a black oxided Sierra Tipped Gameking. They also load a Nosler 165-gr Accubond round that is slower than these(2700 vs 2840), haven't tried them yet either. There are LOTS of options out there, especially for a .308. Again, great series here, looking forward to the next one!

If you’re trying to be as precise as possible, stop lifting your head off the rifle. Run the bolt without lifting your head. Everytime you lift up and go back down you’re creating a different alignment
@@ReviewThisThing I have been reloading for 25 years... much cheaper and more accurate than factory... like the 308 and several other calibers you can load them down to a very light recoil but still huntable
@@ReviewThisThing just about every caliber I can shoot same hole or worse clover leaf at 100.. plus it's relaxing to take a pile of components and make it go bang and hit what you want
I know the decisive things is hold the gun without move and press trigger without move the gun and have a good vie of the target and sights, or have a good scope, of course well zeroed gun and quality gun made. But the biggest problem is when ammo velocity is not the same always. Like each bullet having different speed, the shots are all over the place like shotgun blast. Also each barrel twist rifling need the right bulletweight. This is what i know but even understanding it iam not the best shooter. Just about average
I’m in California we have to use lead free only ..so it makes it hard to find ammo for hunting .A lot of the ones u shot are very good but just affraid there not able to be hunt in California
The test was eh, and a lot of user error. You kept on changing your sight picture, and the optic you are using is not the greatest. Your sight picture is what killed your grouping.
@@ReviewThisThing So do 3 shots next time without lifting your head up from gun after each reload so you don’t change your sight picture. Also on those types of targets, don’t aim for the red. Instead aim at the bottom of the green triangle outside of the red center. That way you know you are aiming at the same spot every single time. When you aim at the center, you aren’t aiming at the same thing every time because it’s too big. Your groupings and zeros will be a lot more accurate if you do that. Aim small miss small. I hope that helps.
Thank you for your help. Something that will shoot 2" or less MOA at 100 yards for target practice and planking. I just bought some Federal Gold Medal Match 308 Win 168gr SMK BTHP for 1.30 a round, but that's for hunting. Have you guys tried the PSA AAC ammo?@@ReviewThisThing

Very nice! Thank you!
Awesome videos! Please do a test on Lead-free 308 150 grains. Thanks
I’ll see what I can do 😊
It still boils down to each individual rifle. We can have the exact same rifle built one right after the other, and they will shoot the exact same ammo with different groups and point of aim.
Please test a barrel deresonator and see if you can make one of the worst for your gun shoot as good or better than the best. THAT would be a good test of an item. Being able to tune your rifles for the type of ammo and bullet style and weight best suited for the type of hunting (elk vs pronghorn for example)
Or for the shooter (reduced recoil perhaps) would be more efficient than buying a dozen boxes/brands and finding a few that work and eight partial boxes sitting on a shelf.

Thank you so much for watching! I appreciate it!
New sub! Liked 🙏👍😁
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
I’ve heard a few good things about S&B but haven’t tried them yet. We’ll have to see if we can find them. Thanks so much!
@@ReviewThisThing lucky gun ner had S&B for 32/bx and Target sports USA is around 27 I think.
Freedom Munitions is their own thing and they're currently out of stock.
Happy shooting.
Thank you! You, too!

Update:
Went to a Lvl 1 Precision Rifle class last weekend (Aug 28). Ringing steel at 400y with what I had of the Freedom Munitions 168gr Match- still out of stock.
Weird thing, according to Strelok with the adjustment I needed to hit I was shooting faster than the advertised muzzle velocity...by 114fps
@@politicallyinsensitive4200 how fun was that?!?
Ya gotta and I mean.. you HAVE to try the hornady black 168gr A-max!
Haha. I’ll add it to the list 😊Thanks!
Please try the .308 Norma Whitetail 150gr rounds. They shoot great out of my CVA Cascade and Tikka t3x. Also do a great job on deer.
Hey, Joe. We did! ruclips.net/video/-1C5gnuMe7w/видео.html They DO shoot great!
Great job evaluating the different rounds, can you let us know your barrel length and twist? I am doing a similar test with my Remington 700 with a 20" 5r heavy barrel with a 1:10 twist, and it seems to like heavier bullets.
It has a 1:10 twist and a 22” barrel. Thank you for watching!
The best info I can find (and there's not much out there) says that the Cascade in .308 has a 1:10 twist. That may have a bearing on its performance with heavier bullets.
It definitely is a 1:10. I’d be interested in trying a tuning brake to see if that would change anything but haven’t done it yet.
@@ReviewThisThing I just bought a .308 before I realized it's a 1:10. Wasn't paying enough attention.
👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome! Thank you. I actually really like the process of finding the right ammo for your gun. Thank you for the info!
I’m currently trying to find what works best with my b14 hmr, just purchased some 165 sst a couple of days ago.
Have you found another round that works better?
I haven’t tested rounds out of that one. Check this list www.bergara.online/us/accuracy-testing/
Can we see how the hornady black 308 groups in bolt and semi automatic rifles
Hmmm...I don't think I have any of that...I'll see what I can do.
You shot the precision hunter with a cold bore. That probably messed with the results. The warmer your bore got the tighter your groups got.
I actually filmed this one twice (That’s why the thumbnail is different). I shot them in a different order in this video and got very similar results both times. BUT - I’m sure that does impact things. Thanks for watching!
Great vidios ,you are a good shooter ! now get the ec tuner and then make us some more vidios please
Thank you! I KNOW! That’s definitely in the works for sure. Thank you for watching!
I'm guessing that rifle is 1:12 and only marginally stabilizing some of the heavier bullets, maybe that's why they start losing accuracy
It’s a 1:10, but I think you’re right.
Those SSTs are definitely fast. I have one 308 that doesn’t shoot them too bad , but my Tikka 308 doesn’t shoot them very well. The tikka shoots 168/165 the best, the Mossberg shoots 150s better.
Thank you! I love learning how different guns handle different ammo.
You really need to test Sako 308 ammo.
I’ll definitely have to see if I can find some!
Federal berger hybrid hunter 168grn 5 shot group 100yrds out of a savage axis 2 308 bullet on bullet
Heck yeah. Haven’t tried those!
Nice 👍🏼
Thanks for watching!!!
Federal terminal accent and trophy bonded do good out my AR10 the 180 trophy bonded lays deer down in tracks
I’ve heard really good things about those.
Only relative to your rifle....Should be....Best Round that Suits my Rifle. My gun Hates Superformance but loves S&B.
100%. That’s the key.
Nice
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
This test is VALID for Bergara B-14 Ridge RIFLE ONLY ! Some people think as expensive ammo is the best ! But sometimes it fit like rocket fuel to the tractor
This is actually a CVA Cascade, but you’re right. You have to figure out what your gun likes. Thanks for watching!
I just picked up one of these (Bergara's) in 308 Maybe you can help on what they seem to like and I can use that as a starting point, thanks.
Have y’all tried the Norma 180 grain bound strike?
We haven’t. It would be interesting to see, but anything over 165 seems to fly around with this 1:10 twist rate.
Ever shot a slow burning powder .308 ammo? Was wondering what brand
Hm…not that I’m aware of
I have two 308s...a RA Predator and an Interarms Mark X. The both like the Federal Nontypical, Barnes, and Sellior & Bellot. All 150 grain. Anyone else have luck with the S&B?
I haven’t gotten any of those in .308 yet. Every time I finish one of these videos, I learn about more rounds I need to try!
Gmx had been discontinued for CX
Well, then. Thanks!
Have you tried any non lead 308 ammo testing for us California residents who are forced to shoot non lead ammo .😢
I did! The video is coming, but out of this Cascade and a Savage 110, the ONLY load that would shoot worth a hoot was Barnes 150 grain. Here is the Savage video. ruclips.net/video/cFHHT4PQu7U/видео.html
Great Video. I like Videos with Ammo Tests. What for a Twist Rate does your CVA have?
Thank you! I appreciate you watching! It’s a 1:10 twist rate.
@@ReviewThisThing So I"m back from the Shootingrange an the Barnes TTSX BT in 150gr was the best of the Ammo If testet
Awesome. Thank you!
Very thorough ammo test "video 1-3"
With this being said, are you continuing to hunt with the Norma ammunition, or has your ammo tests given you reason to swap to another bullet?
So far I’m still planning on hunting with the Normas. I did buy a few boxes of the Federal Fusion 150 grain, though in case I change my mind 😊
You will not get a fair read on mixed copper and lead ammo without cleaning the bore after shooting lead core ammo!!!!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm not a fan of Hornady choose to reload for my .308 win. Nosler is my #1 in accu bond 125 gr..
Okay! I’ve heard good things about those.
Hey there! I would love to hear your take on the Holosun SCS for Glock pistols. Any plans to make one? Thanks!
Hmmm…I don’t have that one. We do have several red dot reviews in the future planned. I’ll take a look at that one.
I used to use the igman 147 fmj for target practice but it is since been discontinued for some reason and now i use a 155gr
Work pretty good?
@ReviewThisThing yes actually I use the SST 308 and it loves that round
Nice. That’s what’s so interesting to me about this stuff.
@@ReviewThisThingif I can't find any superformance sst I always go to hornady American whitetail 150
@Dannyedelman4231 those are pretty solid.
Twist rate? I must have missed it, my apologies.
I may not have said. It’s 1:10.
Can you tell me what length barrel and what twist rate you were using. Thanks.
Hey there! It’s a 22” barrel with a 1:10 twist.
What's your barrel twist rate and length? I would think that matters more than the ammo. My 18" ar10 in .308 shoots sub moa at 100 yards with anything over 160 grains. The 150s fly all over the place lol
Haha. Nice. It’s a 22” barrel with a 1:10 twist rate.
@@ReviewThisThing I also drive an hour or so to a 100yd indoor range. It gives much better results to zero and lets me adjust the scope in the field. If there's one near you I recommend checking it out!
@NM-yu3fc that’s pretty awesome. Need to check it out.
In Argentina 20 ammunition, Hornady P.H U$D 100, Barnes U$D 100, Hornady Outfitter U$D 85, Federal U$D 130, Hornady SST U$D 75.we can't do this here because of the prices!!!!!
That’s crazy! I definitely Wouldn’t do it at those prices either!!!
@@ReviewThisThing how much does a box of 20 bullets cost 308 Win 150 gr SST Superperformance - Hornady
About $42.
@@ReviewThisThing Thank you very much. When you come to Argentina you can go through La Pampa. I invite you to hunt
That’s very kind of you!

Barnes 168 grain shoots best out of my Tikka.
Which Tikka do you have?
TTSX BT
If you’re trying to be as precise as possible, stop lifting your head off the rifle. Run the bolt without lifting your head. Everytime you lift up and go back down you’re creating a different alignment
I appreciate that. Definitely seen the PRS guys do it.
What is the twist rate on your barrel?
1:10
The very best is what I hand load
Haven’t gotten in to that just yet.
@@ReviewThisThing I have been reloading for 25 years... much cheaper and more accurate than factory... like the 308 and several other calibers you can load them down to a very light recoil but still huntable
That’s awesome! I’m bet they’re about perfect then!
@@ReviewThisThing just about every caliber I can shoot same hole or worse clover leaf at 100.. plus it's relaxing to take a pile of components and make it go bang and hit what you want
It sounds like it! That’s awesome!
Makes sense!
👍👍💥💥💥
This stuff is fun!
Is the Norma brand lead free ??
It’s not. At least not that particular round. I’m not sure if they have one that is.
Thanks for your input!
@kromine7 I’ll try that for sure. Thank you.
speed ???
Muzzle velocity? Or time between shots?
🇦🇺😎👍Nice
Thanks! 👊🏻👊🏻
What is the best cheap 308 you have found?
Best for accuracy? Hunting? If hunting, do you want it to pass through?
@ReviewThisThing target and plinking. Thank you for your help.
For sure! How cheap?
Thank you for your help. Something that will shoot 2" or less MOA at 100 yards for target practice and planking. I just bought some Federal Gold Medal Match 308 Win 168gr SMK BTHP for 1.30 a round, but that's for hunting. Have you guys tried the PSA AAC ammo?@@ReviewThisThing
@@RayEvangelista70 the only ammo we tried that wasn't hunting ammo was PMC Bronze, and it did not like it. I think of the ones we've shot, the Hornady American Whitetail is the cheapest, but I feel like there are probably some cheaper target loads that could be good.

Great video Ma’am ! Congrats ! I have a question, how long is the waiting time between each group of shots ?
Thanks so much! It sure is fun. For most of the groups, the time gap was basically the amount of time it took me to get up, pause the camera, switch ammo boxes, and load the magazine. In this video I do give a 10-ish minute break before I try the SST’s again.
