I’m selling my FX9 and lenses to go to the C400. It does it all in such a small package while giving you Burano performance and even more in some areas. Just amazing. Also getting the 24-105 2.8, dream combo really.

@@sa.t.2507 it’s definitely a hard Camera to turn down. I would say that the sony burano has more flexible image but it has less dynamic range in the high iso. I think Sony dropped the ball with that Camera.

I have a C400 preorder in place, but I keep in mind that Sony is rumored to have an FX9 successor announcement to make next month. Unless Sony decides to put some extra pricing pressure on Canon, it might cost another (US) $3k or $4k more, but depending on the price and specs I’m guessing for now I will end up with the next Sony. Time will tell.

@@waveland I’m not waiting to find out though. My FX9 is hard to sell as is and will be worthless as it looks now once Sony releases new cameras. I’m done with Sony, the C400 does everything I need for the nest 7-8 years, that’s how long my FS7 served me.

@@sa.t.2507 The C400 doesn’t start shipping until sometime in September or October (no firm dates have been set yet), so if you don’t have a preorder in yet then you might not see a camera till the end of this year or into 2025 depending on how quickly Canon can turn them out. That’s why I’m keeping my options open. If Sony can roll out a comparable camera sooner then I will probably head in that direction instead since Sony is the go-to brand for agency work in my area anyway. Let’s see how it goes.

I can’t continue using the FX9, it just dosen’t fit my style of work. It produces an amazing image though. But it has so many compromises. And once MKII is announced I will have lost most of its worth, so I better get it sold now ASAP before new cameras hit the market.

Seems almost like a perfect camera for me, I'm a bit tired of rigging up my mirrorless to be a fully functional documentary workhorse, plus I definitely need something with faster readout speeds than my S1H at some point. Nice Review! I wanted to see how the camera performs comparing to the other Canon C cameras. This looks like a pretty solid camera to me. I am getting more and more tempted to upgrade from my C300.
I personally disagree on the Canon needs their fx3 b cam segment. YOu gotta remember that the R5C is a Hybrid camera. I use and own the R5C as bcam and find it a fantastic tool. Great colours, great exposure tools (which Sony doesn't have, not even on the fx6!) , it's a great hybrid camera with amazing photo features, different flavours of codecs, Timecode, RAW (if you ever need it) and a decent 8K resolution image.Yes, the R5C doesn't have IBIS but...frankly, If I want to get smooth shots I mount the camera on a gimbal which is kind of what I bought it for. And if I wanna go handheld I would opt for a bigger camera everyday of the week, so then I will pick my A cam for that. I personally think IBIS is a nice feature if you a running around with a mirrorless with not time to set up...but that's kind of it. And tbf yeah ,the battery life on the R5C is terrible but I can't conceive running a bcam without an alternative power supply anyway, specially when filming interviews. I have an Fx lion Nano to power the camera and it gives me like 3-4 hours of shooting none stop so problem solved. SOmetimes I run the cam on a gimbal with the battery on my pocket connected via USB-c. But the Fx3 in the other hand has better sound solution, and of course IBIS and better battery life which is nice. Both cameras have their pros and cons and they are both fantastic tools but I don't see them "killing" or making irrelevant the other. However I think Canon has to chill out with the prices, that's what makes their cameras a bit more unattractive. So it's nice to see that C400 coming out at a more competitive price.

    • @ShaneVanLitz

Each to their own! I don’t personally think the R5C is as good a pairing as the FX3 is to the FX6 and especially not for the money, but I don’t think it’s a bad camera. That simplifies their post and makes you a slightly easier rehire in the future. Really as simple as that. The cameras match easier. Of course when you’re going direct to client yourself and it’s only your time then that’s for you to decide how important it is. I’d certainly like things to match easier given the option, time is money and I don’t feel canon have a perfect bcam right now, although of course some come close and will do the job - there’s just room for improvement.

Taylor, thanks for the interesting comparison. I wonder why you, as an Australian, aren't more interested in Blackmagic cameras and not only the Japanese ones. Canon C400 is a nice camera at a very good price but once you are forced to use Canon lenses it is not that cheap any more (smart strategy from Canon). As far as I could see, Blackmagic 6K FF (same as Pyxis) has better image quality than the C400. I understand that the Blackmagic FF is not that good in low light, the rolling shutter speed is slow and it is much less functional than the C400 (for run & gun, etc), but in terms of image quality, it seems to me that the BM 6K FF is more organic, has better color rendition and better high light roll-off. C400 has the 'Canon look' which is nice but it's a more corporate/tv look in my opinion. C400 is going to be very good for doc/commercial/tv/corporate, run & gun, solo fast-pace operation, but Blackmagic, with its 6K FF (Pyxis) and coming Cine 12K, is offering an image quality that is superior to the Canon and Sony offerings under $10K. So I am curious why you, as an Australian, aren't more interested in Blackmagic cameras. I am looking forward to someone doing a proper comparison between the C400 and the BM 6K FF (Pyxis), I think people is going to be surprised with the side by side results (as many were when they compared the BM 6K FF with the RED Komodo OG).

Hey interesting comment. I’m not going to buy a camera just because I am from a country that produces it. That is silly!
I also have a long history with Blackmagic and love their pocket 4K,6k but there other cameras have pretty much all have had issues.
I haven’t shot with the pyxis but I have shot with the full frame 6K and found it to be pretty awful to work with. It’s so inconsistent and unforgiving in terms of information in the shadows Banding and fixed pat noise but also terrible rolling shutter! It was basically unusable if you weren’t on the first base ISO. these camera uses the same sensor and has all the same limitations.
It also has no AF, NO NDs, limited frame rates, less dynamic range and likely worse build quality ,no screen , no 10bit.
It seems like it’s going to be a dud because of the terrible sensor implementation.
With all that said the 17 K frame looks bloody impressive and I would love one but obviously it’s $25,000 Australian and design for Man shooters.
And I’d still be worried about the build quality because it’s Blackmagic, which is unfortunate.
I know multiple people whom have owned upwards of 3x ursa Mini g2s because they kept breaking.

Sorry, only saw this one now and wanted to say I agree with Taylor here. We dont dislike Blackmagic, they just don't make aything in the space that fits our personal needs. We haven't talked about the BM 6K FF on the chanel because when we tested the BM 6K FF against several cameras we found it had worse image quality than every other camera we had to test against it, including the Pocket 6k and 4k and its rolling shutter and noise performance were among some of the worst we've tested as well. It's not an aweful camera, but it was the worst of the cameras we had and I'd rather have a Pocket 4K, the image is SO much nicer IMO. Furthermore, the only reason we were doing tests with the 6K FF is because we had TWO people contact us and ask our opinion because after buying the cameras they felt the images did not match their expectations, especially at iso 3200. Don't misunderstand me, I love the Pocket 4K - it's one of my favorate cameras of all time, but I've out grown it. I enjoy the Ursa 4.6K G2 as well, but it doesnt suit the work I do and everyone I know who owns an Ursa has had hardware faults over time and dealers I've spoken to about Blackmagic equiptment have said similar. The Ursa Cine 12k looks like an awesome camera and it's one I can't wait to try. It's possibly the coolest camera coming out this year IMO.... but it's not in the same price class as the C400 and it's for a different type of shooter entirely because it's so large, runs through batteries quickly, only records RAW, and has no autofocus - Which is all fine, it's just not ideal for me at all, I'd like to rent it more than own it.

With that said - Canon didn't choose to send us an R5ii to test before they were availbable to the general public even though we asked for one...
