Johnny Ericsson It isn’t a watch, it’s a wearable smart device, and there isn’t a set standard for how wearables should be designed. It just needs to be comfortable to use, and make sense in the context of the application being used. A turning of the wrist 90 degrees counterclockwise isn’t as big of a deal than 90 degrees clockwise at a resting position.
@Johnny Ericsson The top of the display will be oriented no different than a regular Watch. So instead of the display oriented symmetrical to your hand, the top begins where your wrist lines up with the pinky finger.

I think they should make one where the screen wraps most of the way around your wrist so you can use it looking at the inside of your wrist too. Would definitely be more comfortable for video calls and the adjustable strap could easily go at the bottom of the wrist where you can't comfortably look at anyway

I find the og version looking cooler but the andromeda version I find having a cleaner and practical look than the og version and the most feasible design if it was real to exist

Aren't they in the Vancouver area? The one part of Canada with mild rainy winters instead of our stereotypical deep freeze. Besides, in full winter kit, your watch is awkward to access under layers. A broader over-the-clothing wristband could work if it was cold tolerant. Besides, gloves with touchscreen friendly fingertips have gotten pretty common although they do tend to be on the thin side (more for driving than shoveling).
The BRoll of this deserves an Emmy, amazing.

So I've been a fan(boy) of Nubia for over two years, and it's one of the most innovative companies. It makes greeeeeeat HARDWARE. The software is... let's say... a little bit far from the competition. Bugs and glitches are just a standard for a few weeks, then they make an update and... that's it. I've got a Nubia Z17S, which is a last year flagship and I still have got Android 7. Their own UI has some kinda neat features, while some are just atrocious. I can't even block numbers. The camera app is one of the best, which helps, but also it's not over the top, but it helps to make great photos.
Some of you might then ask me why I still have a Nubia. The answer is easy. PRICE. The prices are on the level of Xiaomi, but the phone isn't made of cheap plastic and it has a nice camera and a fairly nice display. Some people would buy a SGS10 and have it for three years. I'd rather buy a Nubia and have it for 1,5 year and then buy another one.

I don't have a real VR headset. The closest thing I ever used was a smartphone VR headset. I imagine that a display that close to your eyes don't really need a curve. What would that even achieve?

@@Oscar4u69 what about the lenses? And if you wrap a display around the head however far, the headset itself or the video file will need information about how far the display reaches and how it's shaped, so ot doesn't look distorted.
@@Jonkree The lenses create distortion. A wrapped screen, in conjuction with modified lenses, would mitigate distortion even further.

In this video, Linus questions the ergonomics of a wrist device.
The ergonomic benefit is obvious to me. It’s securely strapped to your wrist. That way it functions as an extension of your body, similar to glasses or smart glasses.
A smartphone is a sepatate device that you store in a pocket, then take out. Lots of things can go wrong in that process, including the phone slipping out of your grip, dropping over a meter onto a hard surface, or possibly into deep water. There’s also the risk of theft, whether as a crime or as a “prank”.
Unused phones are also often placed on tables or desks, onto which liquids can be spilled.
You reduce all those risks to
zero, with a device strapped around your wrist. Looking at a screen strapped to your wrist is also a lot faster, compared to having to take a device out of a pocket.

Linus, as a field engineer let me add a different POV use case. Features like "alpha gesture" are great if your hands get dirty while working. This way you can navigate menus and not mess up the screen. Also great if you have OCD over having a clean screen.
Honestly this was a great review Linus! I think you captured your perspective on the product well and I tend to agree with you when you say you see the future potential. It's nice to finally be *wathicng* (couldn't resist) this after hearing you talk about it on wan show. P.S: Your new stance on "clickable title" I'm really enjoying and I think it is a fantastic compromise, I'm glad to see that you've continued to do this going forward, thanks for being frank and honest about it, and so long as you continue to be so in the future you'll have my support, even if that means having to switch to much more "baity" titles in future. The honesty and transparency about it is ultimately the most important thing to me.

Several years ago I found out that the term for 3D “holographic” displays, like the one in Star Wars or what’s at 2:55 in this video, is actually “Volumetric Display.” Holographic displays generally mean the 2D kind you see on credit cards, bookmarks, etc. that make you tilt your head to see the image move.
So if you’re looking for the latest advances in Iron Man tech, search volumetric displays.

I like how they put part of the display on the far side of your wrist where it's really hard to rotate to, but none on the underside of your wrist which you can easily turn to face you.

It would be awesome if a "deliberate" (ie quite quick) twist of the wrist could be used to scroll content on the display up or down. I'm thinking twist and hold that position for a slow, continuous scroll, then revert to your original angle to stop.

The problem with the twisting of yor hand to see the upper part of the display could be solved pretty cheekily ... just put it not as a normal watch with its center on top of your arm when worn like watches, but having the display part being from design tilted to the side from the to of ones arm, so it faces you directly ...

Yeah, it may seem like you don't need a smartwatch. I thought the same thing but trust me it is so nice to have. I suggest buying a Ticwatch E. It is only 190 USD and I got it for 120 USD. It literally costs less than a regular watch so if it turns out you don't need a smartwatch you haven't wasted a ton of money

That i scool, but more in theory than practice as shown. the tall and narrow display might work better for writing systems that can be read vertically like Chinese/Japanese, but I'd rather have a sports band size unit with a 2.5x1.2" or so screen myself. Or go 2.5" square with the flex screen letting it wrap around to the near side of your arm, depending on how fabrication costs are for being that big in both dimensions.

They're not restricted by design because of parts from classic watches, It's using a similar design for you to be familiar with, if you take a look at the older models of Samsung Watches you can definitely see a bigger screen, a Sim and sd card slot

Wow. I love the concept. But there is an obvious missed opportunity here. As long as you are changing the form factor of the smart watch make it more ergonomic. It's not easy to see the pinky side of your wrist. So put the clasp there and have the display wrap dorsal, ventral, and thumb side. Not only is the ventral side of your wrist easier to see (and has more real estate) but it's the obvious choice for the placement of a video chat camera. Looking at your palm is more comfortable for longer then looking at your nails.
As always, great video you guys. I appreciate Linus' style of feedback both pro and con.

They could make the video chatting experience better if there was a quick and easy way to reverse the watch to back of your wrist and hold your hand up (fist toward the sky). The display would be in "landscape" mode, but that would be way more ergonomic.

I have a LEMFO LEM4 PRO (Which I call LEMFO PRO 4).. really happy with it. Good battery life, excellent android experience, and can watch YT and NF comfortably with it's huge proper screen. What's missing?.. a headphone jack and micro usb charger/data transfer .. if it had these things it would be perfect.

I don’t understand why the screen starts on the outside of your wrist, so uncomfortable and hard to interact with. The screen should start about inline with your pinky finger and wrap around to your inner wrist, making viewing and interacting so much more natural. How did something as basic as those ergonomics get ignored all the way to production. Baffles me.

Ive been at this one technology festival in my country today (27.4.2019) and there wasnt even one flexible display in any of the booths but for sure there was a giant ass screen streaming some live Fortnite tournament.
This reminds me of the AI companion from girl from tomorrow and tomorrows end, pj was a wrist device that could hack anything, this device probably doesn't come close in that functionality but the oled display makes it look more useful that the smart watches

The tech needs to come a long way before its really usable companies need to forget the slim watch and go for a full tekko design ,so you can have a flashy animated display on the outside ,things like NFC on the back of the palm and notifications on the inner wrist where they can be discreet and easy to see,the whole thing would also open up the door for more spread out tech so it can be super thin and light weight feeling as it would not be restricted to just the wrist .

Not really a fan of wearables, but I'd rather have the strong vibration. I'm sure any deep sleeper would. Maybe an aggressive step down adjustment, and keep the strong vibration
