As a Surabayan living in NYC, I’ve been waiting for a video of the street food through the perspective of a foreigner. Its amazing how you describe the food as complex, not just in the flavors but also in the texture, because that is what Surabaya food is mainly about. Food in Surabaya is generally umami driven, with the hint of sweetness. We use a lot of petis in our food. You can even eat fried tofu with petis, fried garlic and chillies. Thank you for coming to this sweet hometown of mine, Mark Wiens! Watching this video reminds me of home. Enjoy Indonesia!
Surabayan living in Japan 🙋🏻♀️ I tortured myself by following a lot of Surabaya local food bloggers 🤣 . That Rujak Cingur and fried duck are my family’s favorite for so long.

I'm from the UK but live in central Java. Had to come back to the UK this winter but I'm heading back to Indonesia next week. Bebek goreng with sambal ijo will be one of the first things I eat when I get back.
That duck is masterpiece. You can tell that Mark loves Indonesian cuisine. Incredible flavor, textures, and variety. Thanks again Mark for introducing to this generation many of the world's great but lesser-known cuisines.
The thing with Indonesian food is that they are extremely generous with sauce like they drown it which I absolutely LOVE literally love drowning my foods in sauce and some people say it ruins it and I get what you mean but for me it makes it 10 times better. Also they love spicy food obviously and I love spicy food I eat literally everything spicy so yeah Indonesia is definitely a priority country to visit when I get a chance in life 👍
My mother spent some time in Surubaya, when she was a young girl, and later in Singapore, where our family lived, she always reminisced about this wonderful time for her and her family, and about the glorious flavor of this dish she so much wanted to have again, called petchil. Although she never did get the chance to, I want to thank you Mark, for giving me some insight into what she was describing and how tasty it was to her. I love it when you do Asian countries!
It is called Pecel. Nasi Pecel is usually boiled vegetables with peanut sauce which is a common dish in East Java. The other pecel is called Pecel Ayam/Lele which is totally different to Nasi Pecel. It has plain rice/aromatic rice (Nasi Uduk) with chicken or fish, sambal, and lalapan (fresh veggies). Both of them exist in Surabaya :)
Thank you guys for correcting me on the spelling. My Malay/Indonesian spelling was before “c” was pronounced as “ch”. Sorry about that. man going head over heels for that bebek goreng. I used to travel to Surabaya a lot and yes I can 100% agree they have one of the best street food stalls in Indonesia. Thanks for posting this, Mark!
Indonesian street food has no match in this world! Thank you Mark for reviewing the best that Surabaya has to offer. We are an Indonesian couple living in Copenhagen, your video has partly quenched our cravings for authentic Indonesian street food! Terima kasih! ❤🇮🇩
Heyyoo Mr.Mark welcome back to Indonesia, finally, the time that i wait has come, glad to see you again here in Sambal Country, can't wait to see another episode from your tour here in Indonesia!😁
Amazing. Senang sekali melihat anda berada di Surabaya. Semoga anda berserta keluarga bisa berkeliling Indonesia dari Sabang sampai Merauke. Nikmati keindahan dan makanan Nusantara. Selalu berbahagia.
I am from India. I did liked your previous series of Indonesia.. where you had lunch along with a family there.. at that time I was recovering from malignancy.. even now also I watch those videos of yours, series of Indonesia, series of Bhutan, Series of Kolkata street food in India.. truly your channel is the first one which I have ever followed regular basis.
Navigating Surabaya is like being in a culinary amusement park - from iconic rujak stalls to legendary soto warungs, every bite is a thrilling ride for your taste buds. I'm currently in Thailand as we filmed one of our TV show episode. I'm contemplating whether a dropby in Indonesia sounds perfect?
Sounds great, make sure you prepare the route first. Otherwise you'll end up eating too much. And be careful with the sambal. The Surabayans is a different breed in terms of spiciness. Some people said, "it does feel like getting slapped with a hot train tracks in your mouth, throat, and stomach."
just make sure you have a trusty local guide on your side. The local gems are pretty hard to find. You might end up on touristy traps or just mediocre restaurants.
@@literallyhuman5990If you can handle sambal from Minangkabau, Lombok and Manado, then there's no sambal in the world you need to fear. Especially Manado.

As indonesian, i was mixed ethnicity, from sundanesse, east javanesse ( madiun and madura ) , and what made me so happy are, culinery from them are one of the best culinery, tho i love cuilinery from other etnicity or provinces. If i got a husband like him who love to eat and love to go to find the good one, i will be so happy. Come to indonesian, asked the local for the recomendation street food stall or restaurant. Mostly, indonesian people loves to help, tho you have language barrier, they will try harder to help you. My gosh mark! Now, I need to go to Indonesia oneday. The food? Looks delicious. A smorgasbord of aromas and unique cuisine. And Mark, thank you for describing each food you taste with their textures, smells, etc. 👍

So much more I want to see in Indonesia
Now that I’m abroad, watching this makes me feel close to home. Thank you ❤
I am from India.
Indonesia surga kecil yang ada dibumi, masyarakat yang berbudaya dan gudangnya kuliner terlezat didunia
Ga kecil bang.
Thanks for coming back to Indonesia. As we live in United States I Missed all this food so bad 😅❤
Mampir ke Indonesia Bro. Disini surga Pariwisata
@@dipshidz well, most non-Indo friend that has visited me can't even handle sambal kecap. So I told them to watch out. Personally, I could handle them sambals. Though not in large quantities.
Indonesia is the home of flavor and spice. The cuisine uses the best combination of spices and food texture.
Food texture? Did we watch the same video? Half those dishes had the texture of creamy shits…
Surabayan food its so simple to cook but just surabayan ppl know how to cook it well
Finally what you have been waiting for has arrived... welcome to Indonesia. Enjoy Indonesian food
Mark, you have been to so many places and enjoyed food that many people only dream of! Your reaction to that fried duck sellers product was so pronounced, genuine, and enthusiastic that I think you, with your reputation, should recommend that Michelin visit this lady' stand! It's been awhile since I've seen you so impressed.
Terimaksih banyak Mark kamu telah kembali lagi ke nagara saya Indonesia untuk travel for food..mark nikmati aneka makanan tiap daerah indonesia yg punya makanan berbeda.

Indonesian fried duck with sambal is perfect combination..my top 3 duck dishes along with confit de canard and roasted peking duck..
I grew up on this food, my step father's from there. He just calls it black soup. If you put big sprouts on the top with sweet soy even better. Egg whites as well on top. Peanut sauce on the satay mmmhhh yummy

Great video as usual, that made me want to visit Surabaya and try those cuisines! Just an opinion about the local Indo guys, which I think, they should’ve prepared their talks as well in the video about the cuisines as they’re locals and good to promote his/their channel as well in Mark’s platform
We have 38 provinces here, 300 etnicity grouo, 1340 tribes, try the diversity in culinery, and the nature. Now i am hungry.
Surabaya is underrated city for culinery. Trust me you'll love this city but the weather really hot 😂
It's good that we all have a new knowledge of culinary from different countries. Thanks for introducing these Surabaya food to people around the world 😀
I'm so proud ~
Thank you for this video, Mark! It is delightful to see Tammy and Budi as well, guiding you to places that give you all those delightful cuisines. Things that I also love is how quickly Mr. Budi switches accent from English to Javanese in 22:48!
his passion to try every food around the world is burning through his eyes. i love passionate man, he really knows what to do with his life
glad you're back mark. one of many reason I go on adventure around indonesia is watching your review on ayam taliwang some years ago. big thanks my man
As an Indonesian, I've the privilege to try Thai Food, Malaysian Food, Singaporean Food, Filipinos Food, Vietnamese Food, and even Laotian Food..
And i have to say, South East Asian Food is just the best.. Exploding flavour in every cuisine, combine by the best of western and eastern culinary.
It is up there with French, Italian, and Latin American food.
Nah, Southeast Asian cuisines is a rank higher than any Western cuisines.
Only Middle Eastern, Africans, South Asians, and Chinese cuisines deserves to be on par with ours.
Western cuisine is a joke. They brag about how "fAnCy" they are despite the food being relatively bland compared to others.
