SURABAYA, INDONESIA - Today we’re going to eat some of the best food in Surabaya from the island of Madura!
Huge thank you to Budi Tarjo: / indonesiadiscoverer (He offers incredible tours in Indonesia), for taking me around Surabaya!
Madura is an island located right across a small channel of water from the main Java island of Indonesia and from Surabaya. So within the major city of Surabaya you’ll find many people from Madura and a huge selection of Madura food. Food in Madura is famous around Indonesia - for example one of the most common versions of satay (sate) is Madura Sate. Today we’re going to eat five unique Madura foods, that you don’t want to miss.
Soto Madura Imam Bonjol (maps.app.goo.gl/7xWi7YgrAGxCM...) - Soto Madura is a beef soup, commonly eaten for breakfast, and it’s one of the best soups I’ve had. So good and so flavorful.
Warung Kongde Mbak May (maps.app.goo.gl/Ss6T6zWADj1Sb...) - Welcome to probably the funniest food stall in all of Surabaya, maybe in all of Indonesia!? Warung Kongde Mbak May serves Madura style rice and mixed dishes and the flavors are spicy and intensely flavorful.
Bubur Madura - Typically you think of rice porridge as savory, but this rare Madura style of rice porridge is sweet, with a variety of jellys and palm sugars. It’s quite a complex and delicious dessert.
Sate Ayam Madura Pak Mat (maps.app.goo.gl/8ACpuUikkH3k4...) - You can’t go on a Madura street food tour without eating Madura sate (satay), a type of sate preparation that’s commonly found all over Indonesia.
Nasi Bebek Pak Sayeki (maps.app.goo.gl/EnnK4amRYQafo...) - Next up we’re on our way to a Indonesia food truck that specializes in another Madura delicacy; Bebek Hitam - Fried duck with fried blackened spices.
Surabaya is a food haven, and they are well represented by Madura Indonesian food!

Your decision to go to Surabaya is 100% correct, Mark. Underrated places for foreigner food vlogger. The capital city of savoury and spicy dishes in Java.
I'm a bit disappointed why the tour guide leader accompanied mark to some unpopular food places in Surabaya. How come? 🥲
Sometimes the popular and touristy food place could be overrated. I believe in mas budi judgement because he's a local@@bukankaumplangaplongo
@@TheYoungteenager I'm not sure the tour guide leader will think like that🤔 I saw Mark's head gesture when he tried some food. It's like very common food, not something special, I guess. Sometimes I compare from his video. I reckon that if he tried truly delicious food, his head response will go sideways but in this video his response just for respect. 😁
Mahal 2 dollar mkan dipinggir jlan😂😂😂😂😂
@@bukankaumplangaplongoI was thinking the same way. From 1st vid.. the local host was plonga plongo 😂
Been in the UK, Japan, and South Korea for a while and I have to say this, Indonesian Foods (and lots of South east Asian countries) are waaay above the rest. Especially the spicy ones. Yes it is spicy as hell but tastier! So much flavor than just garlic or soy sauce or kimchi. Indonesia is my catalyst for not just having fish n chips my whole life. You are an inspiration, Mark!
We have more of 330000 cuisine traditonal of indonesian
@@dewypithas677uda nyobain semua mbak?
Indonesia food is the best, you are so lucky if you live there
I travel to a lot of countries and Indonesian food is still the best! The variety of spices, sambal are above all. Not to mention the people are friendly. You have to experience Indonesia to appreciate Indonesia. It's a lovely, friendly country with its variety of food for each province. The country is rich with culture, friendly people, food and natural resources.
Yes I agree. Japanese and Korean food is overhyped. Southeast Asian food is simply a cut above.
Big thanks to Mas Budi, karena beliau tau tempat makan yg bener2 enak 😆😆 Om Mark keliatan satisfied sama makanan madura🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
Pulun sgt hg ni.
Bebek Hitam (black duck) is using so many indonesian spices, and it was cooked very slow so the spices get along very well and turned to be black color, so we don't use blood or other weird spices, just very traditional spices with traditional cooking style, thank you Mark for visiting Indonesia again !
My favorite Indonesian food
The Indonesian sambal is spicier than Malaysian one and when I tried the Indonesian one when I went Jakarta, my mouth was on fire. I’m not surprised that Mark could take the spice. Good vid🔥🔥😅
I know right
Mark has a HUGE spice tolerance
True
Indonesia pakai cabai rawit (bird chili, right?), kalau Malay banyak pakai cabai merah besar.
I think East Java foods is spicier than West or Central Java.
Loving how Mark just casually throwing Javanese curse word with a happy face
The lady at Nasi Maduradid not want to give Mark his plate !!!! 😂😂😂 She wanted him to know she loved him, and him replying I love you back, made her day❤ The laughter and happiness and kindness has me smiling still... Love your videos. Blessings and love to you , Ying and Micah❤❤
For me it's very rare for food vloggers to review Madurese food, this is good content Mark
Indonesia is a lovely place.
I have never been there but it seems nice, diverse and respectful.
Malang cities has always been interesting to me. Hopefully one day.
@CahayaSonic it is.
Very much looking forward to visit.
Bismillah satu saat anda bisa berkunjung ke Indonesia
Aamin 🤲
yah come here sir! malang is nice and friendly to visitors. we hope we won't dissapoint you :)

@@RosariaDewiI wouldn't waste a second but I don't have the facilities to do it.
16:35 You can hear Micah say something like "yuuuUUUMMM! that's spicyyy". Kid takes after his dad! 🙂 I have little cousins that wouldn't try a bite of anything on that table. It's actually upsetting sometimes how picky they are. Micah is very fortunate.
Mark's spice tolerance level is surprisingly high
Been that way since 1885. Welcome aboard. Please don't fall off ship again.
His wife is Thai, so he's eaten a lot of Thai food.
I visited Mark's restaurant, even medium spice dishes are so spicy! But delicious!
seems like u havent seen many of his video.
@@gossipopithecusohh Mark have his own restaurant?
Dulu sy pernah merantau ke surabaya dan sy paling suka masakan org madura 👍👍
I love the way you rolled the R naturally when saying Madura!
Mark I'm really enjoying you eating in this country. I see there are a lot of Muslim people there with halal foof. I am Muslim and i would love to go there and meet the nice people and enjoy the delicious looking food. Thank you Mark and your family for sharing you all travels. May God continue to bless you and your family. ❤❤❤
Mark casually said sambal “jancuk” like it is common name of the dish 😂
As surabayan and regular customer of warung kongde i could say that sambal is really spicy.. being Mark’s subscriber for years I’m still amused by how good he handles spicy food
Who needs bread, butter, toast, eggs, bacon, oatmeal, etc. when you can have this for breakfast?😂
Actually, it's a daily food for us Indonesians, but after seeing Mark try it, it felt like the food was twice as delicious and tasted luxurious, and stimulated our taste buds, we want to do the same, thank you Mark, love from makassar
Indonesian cuisine is rich in fresh and natural traditional spices.
Combined with the skills and traditions of cooking in various regions, a variety of delicious dishes are served.
I never bored to watch your Chanel..it really amazing . Like to see how you apreciate every food...thank for coming to Indonesia again ..hopely u can visit Surakarta...many culinary also here .

Mark you looking humble, and how you can eat in one day all with spicy food...great. you like Indonesian people love spicy food
Hello Mark.. i live in Surabaya, and im very happy that you really enjoyed the food in Surabaya. And the places that you've visited are definitely locals favorite. im so proud that you like Surabaya and came to the places where locals love to eat. Thank you for visiting Surabaya.
You're beautiful just like your city
Ilove for you ❤
Iam from australia
Our food vloggers should follow Mark Wiens' way of appreciating every food he eats. I'm a local, but I'm interested in trying those foods, even though it's a familiar menu that we usually eat daily.
Agree. Indonesian food bloggers should learn from Mark.
Oh my God, my mouth is watering. Looks soooooo delicious.
MASHALLAH…much love and respect to my beautiful, kind, generous and hospitable brothers and sisters of Indonesia!!!
Madura island is quite barren for farming plants/vegetables, so their diet mostly maximizes the cow and all its parts.
I am as Madurese people glad that you review our traditional culinary
love it when Mark covers Indonesian food. the sambal is insane!
I don't think you can really appreciate the amount of innuendos in that warung kongde.
The shredded coconut is literally called dutch pubes.
😂😂😂😂
Lmaoooo the way Mark laughed when he found out the meaning of kongde 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 me tooooo🤣🤣🤣
I lived there for 8 years before. And for my palate, culinary in Surabaya (especially their Suroboyoan and Maduranese Food) ranges between delicious to deadly delicious. So as i remember I never got a super dissapointment having anything there. And I got the heaviest body weight in life while living in Surabaya. truly it's a good memory looking those food photos, but not yourself in the photos😂
thank you Mark. I miss Surabaya suddenly.
Thank you Mark... for introducing traditional Indonesian food to foreign countries
Wawwwww....Wonderful Foods of Indonesia
Thanks. bro👍🙏🙏
Mark, thank you for exploring Madura foods! I've been following your channel since a long time and what you review about Indonesian food is exactly what I feel about the foods. Thank you for being authentic!
So proud that you experienced the full East Javanese culinary in Surabaya and Madura!! You came to the best source of historical and street style soto, sate and fried chicken/duck/meats !!! AND Sambal of course 😅😅😅❤❤❤
Hi Mark I love all these Indonesian videos in Surabaya! Glad you love a region worth of food in Surabaya. If it is possible I would like you to try some other dishes from other region (Sulawesi) that is available in Indonesia such as Pallu Bassa, Coto Makassar, Sop Saudara, fritters (gorengan: ote ote porong, pisang goreng sweet and pisang goreng salty, tahu isi, tahu walik) and for dessert try pallu butung, es markisa and try espisang ijo. Highly recommended and must try list!
Cheers and have an enjoyable food travel
Mark, this Indonesia series is Awesome! What i actually do when making Soto Ajam? Is perhaps a bit 'Out of the box Thinking..' : I make a 'bold flavoured' Soto Ajam broth, AND a 'bold flavoured' Soto Madura broth. I combine bóth broths (Soups) Ratio 2 parts Soto Ajam & 1 part Soto Madura in one pot.. It's Delicious Deluxe!! Add cubes of boiled Egg, Potatoes, Taugè (Bean sprouds), fried onions, chopped leek/sellery, maybe some fried Tahu cubes. And the shredded Chicken meat.. It's Yummy!!! And that Food at "Warung Kongde" looks Mouthwatering! Greetz from The Netherlands...
Indonesian food is so good, I want to try it 👍
Me too 😋
Madura !!! Thanks for coming again to Indonesia Mark!
Thanks Mark for sharing all this delicious food.
Great Mark, always great videos
I’m from southern Borneo, so naturally I am biased to think that our own Soto Banjar is the best soto out there 😁 But Soto Madura and Sate Madura are my go-to whenever I go out for street food. And yes, Sate Madura is ubiquitous, you can find it everywhere you go all over Indonesia.
Like you, I also think the best part of that Madurese duck this is the black spice mix paste. 👍 Thank you for video, Mark! Would love to know your family’s opinion as well. Hope you guys enjoyed your time in Surabaya. Cheers! 🍻
i have not been to Madura yet, but already heard about the delicious food. Madura i am on my way...
@@mamaconnieskitchen8302 if you live nearby, it’s definitely worth the excursion!
I'm sure you haven't tried Soto Kudus
pina musti bebahasa inggris
Not biased though.
Soto banjar emg paling enak se Indonesia.
2:19 soto madura
2:4 nasi madura
2:5 sarat madura
28:45 bebek hitam
*I think I am going to just do food vlogs on my channel just because of this guy haha.*
Kamu adalah food vlogger terbaik dunia mark. Love indonesian❤
If you love spicy food i hope you try manadonese food directly in manado not manado restaurant in java directly in manado, they also love spicy food and other sulawesi province like makasar , etc. NTT and Papua all Indonesia east side love spicy food in general.
I went to Bali a long time ago and I really loved their satay. I'd love to try it again
Those dishes look super delicious 💞💞..
Thank you Mark...you make everyfood awesome..❤
Thank you for visiting and eating well, of course you spread this broadcast well and spread more out there ❤
Mark when explaining how great a fish is, uses an array of English vocab words that he knows no one around him will understand but they will be overjoyed when they catch words like "so good" and read his expressive actions.
Mark is so funny great vibe you just want to watch one video after another mark needs a shot on the food network good job mark keep up the good work look forward to next video wooooooo go team mark
Love your series about Surabaya & Madura culinary. Next stop should be MEDAN
Indonesian food is so diverse it will blow your mind with the array of flavors and spices.
I think while you are at surabaya, find fried duck with black Madura sambal. The one use "Pala" Seed. The sambal will make you hungry more and more.. It is the best sambal in Indonesia. It will make you addicted.
Soto dan sate Madura emang mantap tiada duanya
I always love the way you describe all the foods you’re eating ❤❤❤
Happy to see you back to Indonesia Mark...👍
You might want to try a porridge called bubur manggul. It's originated from madura but not many people make it anymore. I tried this porridge in Surabaya actually and it's even more rare there. I only know 1 seller that sell this porridge by moving around with their cart so I need to wait for the seller to pass by if want to buy it. It's basically a savory porridge, the basic porridge is from coconut milk and taste rather plain. This basic porridge then topped with a more savory porridge made from alot of spices like tumeric, ginger, pepper, galango, cumin, and red chilly and sometimes shrimp head is added as a natural MSG. After that, a soybean powder is added to give a hint of sweetness in it. Believe me it taste heavenly.
Madura island also known as the one of the largest salt producer in Indonesia
let's go to West Kalimantan, Indonesia, Mark, to try the traditional culinary delights of the Dayak tribe
Nyaraninya dimana makanan dayak ini, apa ada warung jualannya?
next time if u eat soto again, u should dump in the rice right into the soup. The rice will absorb all the rich flavors from the soup and it make a better flavor
It's not surprising that every region in Indonesia has delicious and unique culinary delights, because Indonesia is rich in spices. You have to visit Aceh as a closing
Thank you Mark, for coming to Indonesia again.
Enjoy Indonesian culinary delights...😋
eats like a slob!
This is really incredible Mark thank you for sharing amazing street food videos with us ❤
You should try one more Sate style if you are still in East Java, try one of the most famous Sate styles Sate Ponorogo. Ponorogo Sate's style is unlike any others. The chicken is caramelised with spices and sweet soy sauce and eaten with thick and spicy peanut sauce. Because of the caramelization, it can hold up to three days or more, so people often buy it as a gift to bring it to their home town. The uniqueness does not end there; this Sate only cooked with local species of chicken, or "Ayam Kampung" in Indonesia. The famous one is "Sate Ayam Ponorogo Haji Tukri Sobikun".
The Great Mark Wiens... No Chilli No Party.... Oh my God... Funtastics..... Ajib sawak
Again Mark that's my kind of food too. I love stewed meat and veggie dishes, eggs, and lots of fish situated over a plate of hot rice. I will take just a pinch of the sambal!
It looks delicious. I feel hungry.
Amazing skills from the saté man. Great stuff Mark!
that kongde madam is so nice and fun that put smile on me 😂
Haha this was such a funny video 😂
As someone with a sweet tooth, thank you Mark for expanding your sweetness palette and including sweet dishes to your videos.
Thank you for visiting Indonesia
Be aware Mark ! once you try Indonesian food and love it. Your taste buds will become addictive and will make Indonesian food have its own taste compared to food from other countries and will be very addictive. And also be difficult to escape the taste of very authentic Indonesian food
