BALI, INDONESIA - Welcome to the famous island of Bali, Indonesia, and it happens to be a food paradise as well!
Today we’re eating ayam and bebek betutu, chicken and duck cooked “betutu” style, a Balinese preparation that has many variations but includes many herbs and spices, and can either be steamed, grilled, or fried.
There are many different types of ayam betutu, but the one served at this restaurant is from Gilimanuk, an area of Bali on the very western side.
The village free range chicken is plastered in lemongrass, candlenut, shallots, chilies, and many other fresh spice seasoning and then steamed until it’s fall apart tender. The result is a flavor overdose of spice with a kick that goes perfectly with rice. I also tried their bebek betutu goreng, the same spice mixture on a duck, but deep fried.
It’s one of my absolute favorite Indonesian foods to eat in Bali, and if you love to eat spicy, you don’t want to miss it when you’re in Bali!
Prices vary, but for 1 full chicken it costs 110,000 IDR ($7.04 USD), and if you’re hungry you can definitely finish a whole chicken yourself.

I love whenever mark visit a country, he always go as local as possible and not just focusing on typical tourist restaurant.

Ayam Betutu Gilimanuk is super tasty indeed. But after trying Ayam Betutu wrapped in nira and coconut leaves cooked 20-24 hrs in a pile of sekams on top of river stones, you can never go back to 'regular' Ayam Betutu.
Hey Mark you should try "Bebek Bu Rima" in Bali its still on the same road with Ayam Betutu. The fried duck and baked duck are top notch also the sambal so spicy, guarantee you're gonna love it. Enjoy Indonesia Mark 😊

Mark idk if you have been to this place, but since you are an avid enjoyer of sambal, you should go to Nasi Tempong Indra in Dewi Sri Street. Just pick ayam goreng or bebek goreng, they will come with the sambal which is top notch with distinct taste and aroma.

I live in Bali and I think ayam betutu is one of the most delicious foods besides babi guling, I suggest you try other foods such as mujair nyat nyat from Kintamani.

Traditional Balinese and Manadonese cuisine can be said to be almost all types of cooking which are very spicy, well very spicy because they have a slightly different tongue from most people in Indonesia. Try going to Kalimantan to try authentic local hiung chili fried chicken. I like spicy but this chili has a really crazy spicy level

Mark should have been brought to where Betutu spice originated in Gilimanuk and eats the first betutu restaurant there,Betutu Men Tempeh,located in Gilimanuk Old Bus Station. If you order takeaway, it will be put in bamboo container along with banana leaves as the base. Its way more delicious than any other Betutu I have ever tasted

Mark, I myself prefer the duck version of be tutu, but chicken is good as well. We also love our ducks in southern Borneo where I’m from, but I personally think bebek tutu is the best duck dish in Indonesia (not that I’ve tried every single one of them).
Although I do make it a point to go to places that require you to order at least a day in advance, as the real deal takes hours to cook.

After landing in Denpasar, our cab driver dropped us near this restaurant. Waited for around 15minutues, no waiter. I could sense it as a peaK lunch hour. Dropped into a restaurant nearby run by ladies. Being an Indian tourist, everything went haywire. Only thing i remember was the beer.But food was good.
