ummmm, there are no squirrels int he game either but they're apparently everywhere as well.... can't all just be human meat since there aren't a whole hell of a lot of people around :P Or maybe like the small game animals, all of the random nameless people that you see can't all be implemented into the game with free roam or spawn points because the developers didn't care :P
In most things in this setting, meat from a strange/unknown source is usually human meat
So there's human flesh, iguana on stick, and whole iguana on a stick? Fallout has to step up the game like throw some mutant squirrels racoon and some actual iguana.

Rejicorn ! Pretty reasonable conclusion as Fallout has way less people than Nirn due to the nuclear war. Anyone who has the mindset of killing and eating someone else is seen as trying to reduce the already reduced human population. Plus you have deathclaw and molerats to eat. So you ain't that desperate.
There are human hearts in Skyrim, correct?

That’s because Skyrim doesn’t give you any reason to care about anyone. Fallout you can find a story for most of the people in the game, besides just some random ncr soldiers or gamblers.

Kazrron I can see your point
I always assumed that iguana on a stick was exactly what the name suggests, iguana chunks cooked on a stick and left behind by some Latin-American apocalypse survivors. It may not be well known but in parts of South America iguana is a delicacy.
I always assumed that someone brought up a bunch of iguanas from Mexico and started a farm. Caravans could spread it around for merchants to sell. Would probably be pretty lucrative considering all the other meat options.
Damn, Ox will be doing Fallout videos for the rest of his life if he does Fallout and Fallout 2.
I hope so!
Alex FRD and then when fallout 5 comes out hell be loaded
True
His daughter could take after him.
And her daughter
Loved the fallout 1 part! I think iguana bits are made of anything, not just human. I think iguana on a stick is actual iguana brought in from area with iguanas or maybe breeding farms in pet stores. Maybe the reason in fallout 4 it's not an iguana is because the commonwealth is too far from Mexico/the west, so that iguana stick could be other meat, or just lower quality iguana from the trip.
Martin Aguerrevere I was thinking the same thing, i don’t think any of the named meats are what they claim to be. Iguana meat (excluding the actual iguana on a stick) squirrel meat etc. are likely just called that as it sounds better than rat meat or radroach meat or mutant and ghoul meat. Really i think it should just be called ‘meat’ but they’ll likely keep it as Iguana to reference back to FO1.
Whatever helps you eat the stuff.
*munch*munch*
idk when you see the iguanas on a stick in 3 and nv they look like green iguanas to me and those are tropical so they're probably just imports
iguana bits on the other hand who tf knows outside of fo1
I mean... on the east coast they could just get iguana from florida
The wiki says there are iguanas in the game..
I love how much attention to detail you have. you leave no stone unturned.
"Do we kill them on our own and suffer no repercussions?"
Me: "Whoo! Wasteland Justice!"
There are a lot of potential sources for the meat, if we substitute "Iguana" for "Lizard" and vice versa. Many words and meanings were lost, and mish-mashed when soceity was re-building. "Iguana" might have turned into an Inverse Corn Fallacy. (Corn is a generic word for grain, all the Corn that you see are varieties of Maize, but the term was appropriated for Maize, as settlers had no idea what to call it, on first contact with the new grain crop. Ergo, the "Corn Fallacy" is using a generic word, to substitute for the specific. The inverse is easily seen in popular branding. Like plaster bandages all being called Band-aids, or frosted toaster pastries all being called Pop-Tarts.) Of course, Iguana on a Stick, might be a recipe, where any reptile or common scrap meat is used. And we all know that cannibles are usually hunted and killed, so the idea of such a recipe, remaining as human meat, would mean its eventual downfall.
Mirelurk.
Brian Halphin see this makes perfect sense and we know that lizards can get fucking huge in the Fallout universe
I figure it just became slang for meat coming from questionable sources or you don't really know the source of. Like I imagine it'd be something you say about meat you're not really sure about like this.
Wastelander 1: God I'm not really sure about this meat.
Wastelander 2: You better hope that's not iguana bits.
**Laughter**
I think you're right.
Iguana-on-a-stick actually is an iguana. At least looks like one. Still, considering the level of education in wastelands, settlers most probably refer to any edible reptile as "iguana".
Iguana bits, on other hand, are just pieces of meat. And then there is the fact that iguana bits are much, much easier to find than Iguana-on-a-stick. By the time of Fallout 3\NV\Fo4 "Iguana bits" are slang for "maybe molerat, maybe rat, maybe mirelurk, something else" kind of meat. The kind of meat that you buy when you have like 20 caps in your pocket and didn't eat in three days.
Brian Halphin Hey im mexican and is it wierd how english speakers say maize they say it like "maze" while its pronuced "maw-yee-z" ;))))
0:57 maybe misnamed geckos?
Peanut Butter there is gecko steak in nv
well yeah but it's not like gecko is only made of steak slabs, besides the iguana bits in game look too large and chunky to have came from an iguana or any creature smaller than a gecko
My same exact thought, may be people in the Capital Wasteland or in the Commonwealth they know it as Iguana while on the other end they name it Geckos. But, then again, Geckos seem to be native and only found in the Mojave and some in Zion Canyon... I'd like to think I'm eating gecko meat and not... well... horrid stuff
I don't think I saw a lot of geckos in that game
@@putamadremono nope, Geckos have a core part of the plot in fallout 2 all over California north of San Francisco.

So iguana bob’s last name Collins and he has family on the east coast.
So The iguana empire lives.
I agree with you
I've always been of a mind that, it's not necessarily ALL dead people, but rather a slang for just random meat. I figure it's alot like critter bits, basically random bits of trap meat you just throw together from the catches that got thrashed too much or partially fouled.

Dear Oxhorn, you just hit my nostalgic string. And you just honestly made me want to re-play Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Fallout 3 and Fallout NCR in that specific order. Its good that winters are so long here, where I am from. You have wonderful day good sire!
Oxhorn, here's the tip: to get unarmed, and thus, avoid pissing off the guards either in Fallout 1 or at the NCR in Fallout 2, you only have to free up ONE weapon slot and make it active, and you will be seen as unarmed by anyone. So, if the fight starts, you don't have to spend APs to get your weapons outta the inventory - just switch weapon slots by round button on the left, and you're back in action! Hey, you can even put a Stimpack, or some other battle chem as Psycho, in second slot and walk around with that in hand - you will still be seen as unarmed, as it's not a weapon.
In other words, NPCs just don't see your inactive weapon slot at all, even if you have a Minigun in it, they only see the active slot
Thanks for the advice

PurplePanda5858 mama murphy killed one with just 3 bullets !!!!
I know this is three years old but i still love rewatching all these lore videos that span across the games
Really enjoying your fallout lore videos. Keep up the great work brotherman.
I figure it's more likely that "Iguana bits" just became slang for meat from questionable sources. Like after he was found out it may have started out as slang for people trying to pass of human meat as something else and then slowly it evolved to meaning meat that you're not really sure where came from. Because it seems very unlikely to me that a single man can make a business so successful that it basically has a larger reach than any organized faction we ever see. What seems way more likely is that the story traveled by word of mouth around the former US and it became slang.
I like this theory. It makes sense.
In Brazil we call questionable meat "cat meat"
Here in the US we just call that Chinese food
That's lacist
well im glad i don't eat "questionable meat"(or any kind of radiated meat at all) in fallout 3
One year later :
Bob : So you again ?
You : Yep, and I'd like to...
Bob : Renegotiate the prices again, don't you ?
You : Yes, now I'd like 7500 caps per 5 days.
Me : he must do a real good business! 😂
Lord Solaire imagine driving the price up over several years, every 5 days. You could get up to 100,000 caps inexplicably every 5 days. Now I haven’t played fallout 1 myself so I’m not sure if there’s any sort of waiting system but if it has one imagine just waiting 5 days, saving before you talk to him, getting your caps, then negotiating the price up and repeating until you get some crazy price like that. What a way to make money
@@FlashKillerX actually you can't get it that high or at least it's very unlikely because at some point he will kill himself because of reasons? I would say because he had too much guilt of that and he's not making as much money anymore because he has to pay you to keep it a secret
Okay being able to get some many caps out of this is pretty awesome
Unbelievable! FO3 was my first FO game and wondered where iguana came from. I played through FO 1 once, and I payed close to no attention to a Dr. or a food vendor. Crazy stuff...
I'll never eat Iguana Bits again in Fallout games...
Really? Out of all the things you can eat in the game? You literally can be a cannibal. Lmfao
BlueDiamond
I saw a documentary on a Russian high security prison and one of the inmates admitted to butchering, cooking, and eating a person, and even tricking his neighbours into eating some. None of them liked it.
Telmo Silva Tell that to robbaz
Telmo Silva my fallout character is a cannibal
BlueDiamond actually as long as you cook the meat it should kill the parasites.
The iguana bits inconsistency can be explained by only 1 thing : Bethesda lack of big picture thinking when it comes to continuity of the canon lore (its not their game universe !! Interplay made it!!). The same goes for Jet, which is a POST-war drug. Was created in the timeline of Fallout 2(you even meet the creator in New Reno !!). But can still be found in sealed Pre-War vaults and sealed artifacts in FO 3 and Fallout 4. Even the drug dealer in Sanctuary mentions jet in his computer, PRE WAR... Makes. NO.SENSE.
Yea, I mean in Star Wars Old Republic there's a shifty dude you meet on Hutta that asks you if you want to buy some spice (Star Wars generic term for drugs) and rattles of a few popular spices, then says he invented them all. Then he says he needs your help stopping a sale of a guy that is giving the hutt a better deal than he can on the spice.. you can help him, or you can turn him in... If you turn him in he rolls over... So, yea this shifty little nobody invented the most popular spices in the Star Wars galaxy? Doubtful. Could easily be the same with the Jet (or even if it wasn't, Bethesda has made it so)
Mr. Coffee glad I'm not the only one to notice this. also, the guy in Sanctuary had a chem station behind his house. I could make a whole theory on this!
2 words: Time Travel.
Blah blah blah bethesda's fault blah blah blah
Well it is
Never thought I’d see a 30 min video about food in a video game complete with lore and story. 😂😂😂
I keep coming back to this video I love it so much and I’m not sure why
I guana know what happened
underrated comment
I see what you did there.
YES!
•~• Holy Jumpin’ Jesus on A Pogo Stick (Anyone remember that?) (Hint: it’s from fallout new Vegas)
lol
What about squirrel bits? I have yet to see a squirrel in Fallout 4.
The trend from "Iguana bits" got so popular it was only a matter of time someone else opened the same product under a different name, look on fallout 4 wiki iguana & squirrel bits. They are EXACTLY the same only Iguana bits being worth more than squirrel as it's an old trusted product, just think of it as: Iguana bits - made in USA, Squirrel bits - Made in China. Creepy shit, indeed. One should expect such degeneracy in an lawless world, sadly...
2veki I’d expect it the other way around XD
Koolisid Why? Iguana bits were first on the market, if you're referring to USA over China products I just took that as an rough example pointing out that China dishes out all products that exist on the planet but with a questionable quality. I should've put like German over China as they were known in the past for their quality products, especially military ones further back in the past.
@@2veki yea there weapons and machinery were superior to most in the 1900s
Sometimes I just rewatch the videos, it helps me relax before I go to sleep
I remember I asked my cousin you know how in fallout there’s iguana bits and there common he said yeah and then I said have you ever seen a iguana 😳
Its also possible that its not actual human meat. Like how facial tissues are called Kleenex by many people, regardless of the brand used. A similar thing could be happening here, where meat on a stick or meat in a can became known as iguana, just because it was so popular in the hub, which in fallout lore is a massive settlement, if not the largest settlement in fallout history, which would make it easy for rumors to travel with caravans and wanderers. We know Kellogg came from that area, and is very very old, (he was the one who took Shawn as a baby and when the player confronts him, he looks the same) so maybe his time in the common wealth was enough for all the people there to call it that. Then its not much of a stretch to say caravans carried the idea to the capital wasteland.
A brand or popular item becoming synonymous with all items of a similar nature is a common occurrence but you don't fuck about when it comes to identifying meat - this is why humans are called humans and cows are called cows, to avoid accidental consumption of people.
Remember kids, if it only says meat, just say no!
Then again, wasteland isn't exactly the best place to get picky about your meat-habits, so ignorance of the specifics of your mystery meat might be best left unknown- after all, when times are tough, people are starving, and there are convenient corpses lying around~~
Well, things might happen, and Iguanas might walk onto sticks.
Yeah its the same how the word mirelurk is used for different creatures like mutated crabs, lobsters, and frogs. Someone somewhere called a mutated sea creature a mirelurk and it spread to where its used to describe any aquatic mutated creature
This makes me feel a lot less disturbed.
What the fuck did I just read
God damnit iguana bits were my favorite
Cnwamw you do know that this is a comment, right? Not a person pretending to be curie. You know that, right?
And you are a weaboo that can't take a joke. So either you keep being so or fk off
+masterchief senpai this coming from the guy with senpai on his name
+Cnwamw its not an anime convention either you failed abortion fuck
It's a joke back in high school so stfu
We have had iguanas on the East Coast now for quite a few years due to the Hurricanes that hit Florida. Florida is now becoming so overrun with iguanas and pythons there is a open season on them all year round. Who's to say they did not mutate and move north into West Virginia?
Today on questions I really never asked, but now I'm immediately interested in.
