(Lovely thought, right?) And for those well-read in video game parasites, who assume it's similar to the Cordyceps fungus of The Last Of Us fame -- you're partly right. Beauveria fungi are *like* Cordyceps, except they reproduce asexually, meaning they can spread like wildfire once they latch onto a food source... in other words, Naughty Dog picked the *nice* parasitic zombie brain-fungus for their post-apocalyptic road trip. (Again: lovely thought, right?)
@Elijah Isaacs I love how they left this mental horror of something akin to a *zombie fungus* actually existing and the only thing you took away from this was " but can you kill cavadors with this?"
There's also a parasite that infects insects, takes control of the host and maneuvers them into a position where they'll be spotted and eaten by birds who will then swallow the parasite eggs and spread them around.

Give the data to the Brotherhood first, they dont take it, but the quest is cleared, leaving you free to give it to NCR and complete that quest too.
I study plant biology and means of pest control as a consequence and I have to say that Vault-tec's idea to use these spores as pest control isn't that far fetched or odd and in actuality the chance an organism changes its host (from pest of choice to human) is extremely small, especially if it was designed for roaches the events of vault 22 were just a series of extremely unfortunate events (rodents are more closely related to us making the host change a whole lot easier). What is however problematic is Vault-tec's utter lack of safety procedures. No research lab in this world would be allowed to work with a potentially dangerous airborne disease like that in a setting where said disease could get into the air conditioning system. In short what I'm trying to say is that Vault 22 fell not to their "inhumane" experiments but a serious lack of understanding as to why safety procedures are a thing.
That's pretty much what I thought watching this video, of course I'm a biologist too so I was just shaking my head. Safety and containment procedures are a thing for good reason. During my student years we were making glow-in-the-dark ecoli on petri dishes and there were strict safety protocols we had to follow. The stuff wasn't even dangerous, its just no chances were taken that this glowing e.coli would escape into the wild. Working on a potentially dangerous airbourne disease would call for crazy amounts of safety and containment procedures. Silly Vault Tec. A little more safety and a lot less recklessness would have made this Vault successful.
Well it's Vault-Tec, so I wouldn't be surprised if they ignored the safety procedures just for that to happen. I mean, in the end, Vault-Tec never really cared about the well being of the people that live in their vaults.
Well maybe in this world, they weren't smart enough to think that far ahead. Something I have learned about Vault Tec is they never thought of the worst. They seem to rarely put up safety measures and only think their experiments will work and have no chance to fail. Also, the whole point of this vault could have been to see what happens when a contagion is released in the air vents. How effective could it be? Just a couple thoughts
Teineeva Well, the problem is that the spores were genetically altered. Vault Tec sounds like people that play fast and loose with science. Experiment first, consider consequences later. They probably wanted to include rats among the "pests" that were targeted. If it can infect insects and rodents, going to humans isn't too outlandish, especially since Vault Tec either didn't have time to test just how many types of mammals this stuff worked on or they never even considered it. I mean, this is the same company that experimented with FEV. Anything with the words "*forced* evolution" in it is a bad idea. "CONTROLLED Evolution" would be a much better concept.
This was my favorite vault because of the creepyness of the patches of vegetation and then you realize that they have the terrifying spore things and THEN you read the terminals and you're just like "Never mind, I'll be going now."
But later in the vault you find the flamer and then everything is a lot easier until you run outta flamer fuel. But I did have like a billion .45 rounds and an auto pistol so I just sprayed and prayed at all the plants
@@hikenjeager8874 I mean by this point you should have a bunch of flamer fuel (I had 1k) the bigger problem is how long will the flamer last before breaking
I love this quest not only for the story but we also get one of the best quotes by Dr. Hildern "Too many people have opinions on things they know nothing about. And the more ignorant they are, the more opinions they have." And this is truer in these hard times.
Well this one is different becuse vault 22 experiment wasn't hinged on people getting hurt. People got hurt anyway but stills this is one of vault where the intented test subjects are plants and insects people in vault were just supposed to benefit from the vault. Still people got hurt that wasn't the intention unlike the other where people getting hurt was part of their intentions.
With 70 science you can convince Keely that the data should be kept so we can learn from their mistakes, the best ending. There's also references not only in Honest Hearts as you said but also in Old World Blues
not sure if you noticed but he does mention that but his character doesn't have 70 science so he has to pass up on it. it's ok if you missed it we all make mistakes.
9:42- vault 22 is an obvious reference to the Carboniferous period (lasting roughly 359 to 299 million years ago) where there was an overabundance of oxygen, which allowed arthropods to grow to gigantic sizes. Hence why the mantises are so large- the plants created more oxygen. The Carboniferous period is also known for its lush and vast (perhaps planet-wide) forests and swamps, from which we get much of the coal we burn for energy today. Yeah, science!
5:02 “We’re not dissuaded by monsters and terror!” The second you said that, a commercial for Jurassic World 2 played and a huge mutant T Rex roared. 10/10 timing was fantastic.
I ended up leveling up after killing a whole bunch of CAZADORS. Oh how I hate CAZADORS! I hate them! Did I mention how much I hate CAZADORS?!! ~Oxhorn 2017
I can't imagine a more disgusting way to die. More and more fungal and plant life growing inside you, making your chest feel heavier and heavier, like a chest cold. With the coughing (caused by the excess spores, no doubt), it's no wonder they thought it was pneumonia. Who would even think that they were being converted into walking spore factories?
@@nerdified2827 Well, one has you turning into another creature...but the other has a fungus using your lungs as a home. How long does the victim live? Before or after the fungus exits the lungs and spreads to other organs? To the blood? To the muscle? One could only hope they die before it gets that bad.
Me too I had the same PTSD feeling I had exploring this vault as I did in the first two Halo games when it took one ammo magazine to kill one flood enemy
Playing through this vault was incredibly creepy, and I became paranoid of every patch of grass containing a spore carrier ready to scare the shit out of me.
these New Vegas videos are great. I adore the lore of NV, imo it has some of the deepest lore in the series. I'd love to see one of those 'guide' videos on Ulysses. the ones where you go over their whole story.
"Imo it has some of the deepest lore in the series." You've never played Fallout or Fallout 2, then, have you? :P Also, of course it has deeper lore than 3 and 4, it wasn't made by Bethesda. :P Windbow Gt What ABOUT Fallout 4?!
It's like comparing Diablo 1 to Diablo 3. D1 = Blood, tits, gore, can actually be thrilling. Then WoW style graphics for D3 :/ And slimy anti-customer practices including forced online. Hmm.. What other games series is about to go all online? Never to develop a worthwhile game again, just cash cow games. Not surprised at all though. 99% of today's gaming industry sucks. You have Fallout trying to be Fortnite and appealing to kids who just got their first job. Zero consumer experience, and brand shiny new credit cards.
Lmao the path you took to vault 22 was exactly mine. I saw the vault from the top after battling a bunch of cazadors and nearly dying when I went, "oooh what is that oasis". I didn't have any mission to go there yet
Man, I remembered my first playthrough, the moment I see the warning sign that said that the plants kill, I went to fiend territory to 'Borrow' a flamer from Cook Cook after 'taking care of him and his head', before going back to the vault to proceed.
nice video!, btw you forgot another part of the story that can be found on Old World Blues DLC, and the fact is, the scientists of Big MT created all those mutated plants and highly risky spores, then they gave it to vault tec, and vault tec selected vault 22 for the experiment. you should take a look on every corner of Big Mountain, there's lots of fragmets telling the story behind the vault. i hope you'll complete all this story on another video.
oh, and by the way, when igniting the vault, your supposed to seal yourself in the server room that contains the data, it not far from the vents and will protect you. took me forever to figure that out as well
I don't think you even need to shut the server room door. I just shot the vent from a distance with a laser pistol the second time. ...Yeah I blew myself up the first time like everyone does.
Boone's 'Spotter' perk is awesome! I love the way enemies just light right up so I can peg them all at range! Thanks for revealing this location, Ox! I knew there would be more than just a few bugs down THIS hole in the earth!!!
Boone has kept me from picking up Veronica just yet. But, unless Veronica plans to install a reload station in addition to the workbench function then Boone is my man!!! I love making all the NCR Troopers at Ft McClarren jealous :) hearing them say, "I wish I had a Ranger watching MY back!"
I remember I was walking in and heard my character make a sound when he gets hurt, he turns around and I saw a spore carrier pounce at me, almost shat myself
There's a couple of other ways to avoid being killed by the explosion: * The room with the data backup is secure, if you close the door, it is close enough to the vent that you can lob a grenade or dynamite around the corner. * You can place a C4 device, then run back to the elevator, use the detonator, then immediately hit the elevator. You should have time to take off before the fireball reaches you.
Also I'm not sure but the Children of Atom could be a main faction because I'm 35% sure that Chicago University had an underground nuke building site in the football stadium in WWll
Already been done with Fallout Tactics but I think if they're going to put it anywhere that would be a good place, there or New Orleans unless it's below the ocean or some shit
what makes me most curious about this vault is, how do we not get infected? i get that "create-a-characters" are turbo mary sues and a video game has to video game but are we really to believe that we are just that one random person who is completely immune to the spores? it doesn't feel quite right.
Did you miss where Keely put some uv purple light on every floor to filter the spore with the plants ? Only temporary that's why we need to put flame and destroyed the spore for good
foogi I did the same fault and walked over the Mountains, I was surprised how many there were and 20 Minutes of fighting and poison (AND THIS STUPID NOISE IF YOUR POISONED!!) and dying I saw why there were so many.....I found an frickin hive...I....I facepalmed myself....hard....
For those of you who died many times like me with the explosion you can shoot the laser rifle into the vent from the place with the data the NCR wants then close the door to survive.
The story of Randall Clark also ties into the Vault 22 survivors and what happened after they left the vault. If your doing a video on the Sarrows it would be a good tie together video if you did on on him.
Have you ever thought about doing creature profile/lore videos? You could role play that you are an exquisite hunter giving tips/info to new wasteland explorers.
The first time I came across this vault, I was basically seeing how long I could play while I waited for the mushrooms to kick in. I had no idea what was going to happen in this vault and needless to say... it FREAKED ME THE HELL OUT MAN!!! I had to save and put the controller down and go collect myself after getting about half way through the vault. I went back later when I was sober and now I find that it triggers flashbacks every time I go in there. I laugh.
That's what kinda put me off about Fallout 4, The Vaults are lame compared to new vegas. I can go delving into new vegas Vaults and find a massive underground structure that feels like it goes on forever while I can just run through vaults in Fallout 4 like nothing lol. speaking of vaults, Oxhorn you should do Vault 11 next!!! that vault is pretty interesting I'm sure you'd like it.
Molokai Bean Well, there aren't as many vaults (or at least absolutely crazy ones) in 4, and they didn't just want to have a focus on the vaults and expanded the other areas, also I kinda don't like how expansive the vaults are, it just feels kinda pointless, since there are so many rooms that serve no purpose.
@@Uzi.10101 the data is botanical research. The spores came from the Big MT which Vault Tec stuffed inside the vault's vents to cause an outbreak. The plant research is purely for growing food in the wasteland and even if it was the plant spores, it's better to know how it happened so it never happens again. Forgetting history is the easiest way to repeat it.
Spore carriers are extremely easy to dispatch, they take a good few seconds before attacking you so you can legit just run into the plants swinging a melee weapon and kill them without taking a lick of damage.
I'll always remember that when I was exploring that place, I was cleaning out the vault bedrooms, and one of them had a crib with a smaller spore carrier waiting inside it to jump me. The fact that the spores spread that far...
Steve L Oh yes,I too was really paranoid about the spores, but in the end it made no difference. Well, maybe it takes long-term exposure to them or the concentration has lowered on account of the vault door being open.
i went to this location earlier today for the first time, as i went further down the vault and through the corridors, the creaking ambience and the toxic green mist put a chill down my spine. the first time i saw a spore carrier (or whatever they're called) i thought it was just mist. i had finished exploring a room and found nothing, i left the room and ahead of me in the t-shaped hallway a creature scuttled past. i thought the mantises were the only enemies.
This video is a bit old, but I needed to put in my 2 cents. I think you shouldn't delete the data. I know that people died, but this data could provide food for millions. To delete this data is to doom the wasteland to crops that wield little due to poor conditions. Hunger could be solved. Yes, the spores are terrible, but the vault is a testament to its evil, so I doubt they'll use it. Deleting all of that progress is to scoff in the face of a better wasteland and deny millions food.
Shady Sam Spore carriers are horrid creatures. You can walk right by them without noticing them until they start gnawing on your neck. Doesn't help that they can quickly wreck your shit.
TheBlues32 nah see I don't fuck with that shit, if it looks close to shifty, it gets a warm hello at the hands of the fat man. All while screaming USA and listening to "let's ride into the sunset together"
Do a Video on “How Vault-Tech became so Powerful” Explaining why and how Vault-Tech was able to do these Inhumane Experiments on the Populous both In and Outside of the Vaults. Why the Government or the Law Didn't or Couldn't Intervene and stop them. I'm pretty sure that some Investigations or P.I. aka Private Investigators couldn't hit the Nail on Vault-Tech's Cruel Experiments.
Its already explained throughout fallout games, but in case you didnt know, vault tec is a fake bunker. Most of them were used for experiments. How does no one see this? It was run by government, and no one know about it except Enclave and vault tec themselves. Enclave being the official US government. The experiment will only be conducted when the bomb fell, thats when people will flock inside the vault. When they reveal their true nature, there is no one at all that are alive except those who are inside the vault and Enclave which monitors the experiment. Why having an experiment? The plan is, after the bomb fell and wiped most of humanity. They will re colonize earth / leaving the earth for a better planet. Now, they need to make sure that the ship towards new planet will be filled with a stable society. The data from the vault will be useful, since both, spaceship and vault are in an enclosed space and no way to escape. So with all that experiment, they will get data and could respond accordingly to any other problem they might encounter in space later, when they are on the way to new planet. Since its gonna be a long journey, they are trying to make sure the society will be stable. The data from vault shows all kind of problem that they possibly encounter in space travel. Not all vault used for experiment though, some vault are harmless and were meant to repopulate earth if there is no problem resulting from nuclear radiation.
Oxhorn, A video on the Masters Army and/or a character profile on Marcus from Jacobstown is needed. Thanks anyway for the great videos and for branching out into New Vegas.
The spores are kind of like Cordeceps, which does the same thing to bugs. Actually, a mutated strand of Cordeceps is the main driving force of zombieism in The Last of Us.
Timm Tam, Definitely, But it did help me level up quite a bit. By the time I left my science and sneak skills were almost maxed out and I got the friend of the night perk which I hadn't really considered getting up until that point.
I suppose it would be possible as a multi-parter/mini-series. He'd have to do a lot of work on it though so you wouldn't see it any time soon, most likely.
Don't get me wrong Fallout 4's location lore is both interesting and kinda nonexistent at same time. What i mean is the location is interesting but the lore is almost nonexistent like the parking garage maze that was interesting but had no lore or explanation of why it was built. What Fallout New Vegas did right was make sure the locations you found were interesting like Jason bright and their quest to go the "great beyond". That's what i expected to find in Fallout 4 not "Another settlement needs your help I'll mark it on your map". That's what bugs me in Fallout 4 you are forced on a strait path of being a good person with no choice except to play the game Bethesda wants you to play the game. While in New Vegas i had the choice of helping Good-Springs or helping the powder gangers take over the town. Do you want to join the NCR or Caesar's legion? Do you want to help Benny take over take over New Vegas or Kill him so that he's no longer a threat to Mr. house. I like New Vegas because of all the player choice you get and i despise Fallout 4 because of the intense lack of freedom. Fallout 4 only has 3 endings that have you nuking the institute while in New Vegas you have dozens of endings depending on what you did and what impact you'd have on the Mojave desert.
+GuyWhoPlaysTF2 didn't you play fallout 3? It was the same way. Fallout 1 and 2, you had a lot of freedom, though in fallout 1, you did have a time limit to get the water chip, however, after that, you had a lot of places to go and things to do in any order you prefer. If you haven't, play fallout 1/2, they're slightly short games but have a lot of replay value, and fallout NV is the true fallout 3, imho
Waskomsause but the thing with Fallout 1 and 2 how you played the story didn't leave you with just 2 options, you had a pretty nice amount of dialogue options and interactions with the NPCs, you'd end with the same goal sure but how you got there would always be different, with Fallout 4 it just didn't matter what choice you made, it was always a yes or no answer with no variation at all.
Thank you so much for doing a video on Vault 22. When I went through it, I was too terrified of the damn spore things to pay any attention to the logs, etc.
You can actually convince Keely to not delete the data by bringing Arcade with you and youll say something like "my friend is in a group that knows what theyre doing" something like that
man, I freaking hated Thomas Hildern, I wish I could throw a book titled Due Diligence to his face. heh... he seemed like the best person for a Vault-Tek scientist now that I think about it.
Literally every video this man makes manages to be intriguing in every way! I love the Fallout franchise and its lore, and I’m ashamed of not getting into it sooner-
KOkami03 You get to keep the data and Keely doesn’t mind anymore. You basically tell her that it’s important to keep the data so that the previous mistakes aren’t accidentally repeated.
Ox I know this is an old video but hearing your voice takes me back to playing fallout 4 in college. Hanging at my girlfriend’s place and exploring the wasteland with you voice in the background kept me sane. Thank you
Yeah, don't feel too sorry for the poor survivors of Vault 22 who lost their home and technological comforts that came with it. Most of them turned out to be bigger monsters than the ones they were fleeing from.
This is cool. I explored this vault in my first play through because I'd seen your thumbnail and thought the first few seconds were cool. I was scared out of my mind. I'm glad I'll get to know all the leafy green secrets!
Bjorick I like survial mode in it. Fallout 3 and new Vegas have better game mechanics(skills) and a better storyline. Fallout 4s main story line is one of the worst pieces of garbage I've ever seen.
+Kyle Roland So, something like 'bethesda presents '7 Days to Die' or something like that? If the survival aspect is really good, might be worth looking into, however, hearing how bad the story is, and the mechanics are, it sounds like anything it does right will be weighed down by a lot of baggage? In truth, i gave fallout 3 a try even with my worries, and while it needed work, i enjoyed it for waht it was, fallout NV was better and felt like fallouts of old, but fallout 4 sounds like everything i feared it would become when bethesda got the rights to the title.
Bjorick in survial you have to eat drink and sleep. And you can only save if you sleep in a bed. Which gives you incentives to actually use the settlement building aspect of the game. It adds a layer to the game and makes it a bit more playable but I still like fallout 3 and NV better
best sentence i have ever heard. " we're going to repair the elevator and then take the stairs."

"CONTROLLED Evolution" would be a much better concept.
wy

Still people got hurt that wasn't the intention unlike the other where people getting hurt was part of their intentions.
With 70 science you can convince Keely that the data should be kept so we can learn from their mistakes, the best ending. There's also references not only in Honest Hearts as you said but also in Old World Blues

There's a couple of other ways to avoid being killed by the explosion:
* The room with the data backup is secure, if you close the door, it is close enough to the vent that you can lob a grenade or dynamite around the corner.
* You can place a C4 device, then run back to the elevator, use the detonator, then immediately hit the elevator. You should have time to take off before the fireball reaches you.

@@Uzi.10101 the data is botanical research. The spores came from the Big MT which Vault Tec stuffed inside the vault's vents to cause an outbreak.
These lore videos are so interesting and intriguing to listen to, it’s like the modern version of a radio show.

Do a Video on “How Vault-Tech became so Powerful”
Explaining why and how Vault-Tech was able to do these Inhumane Experiments on the Populous both In and Outside of the Vaults.
Not all vault used for experiment though, some vault are harmless and were meant to repopulate earth if there is no problem resulting from nuclear radiation.
srry for my first sentence, vault tec is a company. What i meant is vault is a bunker, but the main purpose is not that, but to conduct experiments

Sadly Fallout 4 took to the original Fallout story telling path. Fallout 1 and 2 were like that, railroaded story, even a time limit on 1.
+GuyWhoPlaysTF2
didn't you play fallout 3?
Also you can play the game as a bad character, either just shoot everyone or join the Nuka-World raiders
And, all the main factions in fallout 4 except the minutemen and the railroad are evil in a hidden way
Thank you so much for doing a video on Vault 22. When I went through it, I was too terrified of the damn spore things to pay any attention to the logs, etc.
Man,i love these videos they fill like podcast episodes, well done Oxhorn
Now do Vault 11, it has a very tragic story and outcome, I'm sure you'd love doing a video on it! Keep up the good work :)
You can actually convince Keely to not delete the data by bringing Arcade with you and youll say something like "my friend is in a group that knows what theyre doing" something like that
Works if you have Veronica with you also
man, I freaking hated Thomas Hildern, I wish I could throw a book titled Due Diligence to his face. heh... he seemed like the best person for a Vault-Tek scientist now that I think about it.
I remember this. I found this vault by accident, way early in the game. This vault 22 was a damn death trap.
Literally every video this man makes manages to be intriguing in every way!
I love the Fallout franchise and its lore, and I’m ashamed of not getting into it sooner-
13:10 It was at this moment that he knew...
*He Fucked Up*
Lol when the dr started talking "imagine if you will" the opening scene from the old show the outer limits popped in my head lol
Also, what exactly happens if you have science 75?

You get to keep the data and Keely doesn’t mind anymore.
You basically tell her that it’s important to keep the data so that the previous mistakes aren’t accidentally repeated.
Oh, thanks!
KOkami03
No problem.
Vault 22 was always the most unsettling vault to explore in my opinion
Then you shouldn't visit Vault 106 and 87.
I was surprised there was so much plants because i was getting used to grayness or something
Ox I know this is an old video but hearing your voice takes me back to playing fallout 4 in college. Hanging at my girlfriend’s place and exploring the wasteland with you voice in the background kept me sane. Thank you
Have you done a video on Joshua Graham yet? Because that would be amazing
The vaults in F4 were really underwhelming, especially compared to those of New Vegas
i havne't played f4, but everything about it looks underwhelming, honestly? Is it actually any good?
i have it and i dont like it
Bjorick I like survial mode in it. Fallout 3 and new Vegas have better game mechanics(skills) and a better storyline. Fallout 4s main story line is one of the worst pieces of garbage I've ever seen.

So, something like 'bethesda presents '7 Days to Die' or something like that?
