They did. They said that since milk has all the nutrients a baby needs, babies can survive on milk alone during the first 6 months of life. So why would you feed a baby anything else? Considering that breastmilk is free, always the right temperature, it doesn't smell when baby poops, you have an unlimited supply of it, and its wonderful bonding time. It's kind of a no-brainer.
I was watching this as I pumped milk for my newborn. My sore nipples were hoping to hear something profound to make their sacrifice extra worth it. Guess seeing his cute little face fatten up on my supply will have to be enough motivation. ☺️
I was surprised there was no mention of colostrum and the vital immunoglobulins in human milk that are specifically tailored to each human baby (absent in cow’s milk and formula). In addition, no mention of the milk ejection reflex, which is triggered by the baby and causes the milk to travel down the ducts to the baby. This is why milk doesn’t flow out all the time as it is produced.
for a woman preparing to lactate, I found the information about how milk is produced in glands helpful. everyone I talk to about breastfeeding are all about how to latch a newborn, but I feel knowing the science behind how my body is producing is important for making sure I eat correctly to produce nutritious milk. also for the people asking why we drink cows milk, im sure it had something to do with a mother dieing in childbirth and the father lacking an available wet nurse. over time the discovery of cream and butter added to people wanting to milk cattle. not even 300 years ago it was common for families to rely on their animals for food and resources. in fact killing an animal for meat was considered a waste that could only be afforded by the rich. hence smaller livestock, like chickens, were domesticated, and hunting game was considered a way to feed your family.
In norse myth, the first frost giant was created by a great cow (Audhumbla), but because his realm was nothing but ice and one very angry dragon, he had to survive on her milk alone. The version I grew up with also had him gradually weaving clothes from her tail hairs, which he would take one at a time because he couldn't risk not having her milk. Cows were esteemed because of that; they can provide everything, milk as drink, meat and cheese as food, and their hides as clothing. Cows rule.
please don't use gender specific things. Man can also be mother or mother can also be a man. Anyone can lactate. Me as a transmen ( not transman) also feed my transasexual baby. Also cows are bad for planet. Be vegan.
cows get milked 2-3 times a day, and there are many dairy cow farms. the animal is not harmed, in fact they like it. how much milk comes out of the cow depends on the breed and age of the cow.
While the cows on your farm and the farms you know may be treated well, the majority of the milk consumers drink do not come from cows who lived a similar lifestyle.
Back in Brazil, I could leave milk for months in the pantry, but when I moved to the US it would go bad by being in the fridge for about 2 weeks. Both me and my roommate are Brazilian, so we always thought it was weird and wondered why it happened. Just sent her a message telling her I found out why lol

Cow's often drip milk at parturition, which people could have noticed. Same if lactating cows were ever hunted and the udders prepared. Now, for cheese...
Any smart person would see a baby calf drinking from the teets just like human babies do. I’m assuming they just knew it was milk and tried to taste it for themselves. After all I can see puppies drinking milk from their moms and know it’s milk. I just have no interest in drinking it lol
At 2:01, I want to add a revision. It’s a common misconception that buffalo live in North America. They are actually native to Africa, and only live in North American zoos, much like giraffes or lions. The animal that you are thinking of are bison. I hope this helps 😊
They skipped the part where the enzym lactase reduces significantly after weening age, indicating we dont need milk anymore afterwards, and explaining why so many people are lactose intolerant. Chance missed.
Hasn't anyone thought of treating milk with irradiation instead of heating, like we do with canned food? It might avoid the issues with the heating affecting the make up of the milk
There's so many kinds of milk that comes from plants instead of animals! That way, you get to enjoy milk, and you don't cause unnecessary harm to cows and their babies!

I heard that it took about nine thousand years after the domestication of cows for humans to become tolerant to the lactose specifically designed for cows. I'm not sure about other milks, but in human milk, most of it isn't for the baby, it's for the bacteria growing in its gut. Plus, evolutionarily, mammals were originally made to be lactose intolerant after they reached a certain age. These are a few things that he neglected to mention in the video.
As another commenter said, I'm sure it has to do with mother dying and the father having to feed baby, in history. Also some people do better with milk pre pasteurization
Doesn't make life worth living for those cows who get their calves taken. I'm sure you could live without a milkshake. Those babies would rather have their mama.
WTF! the number of vegans arguing with/insulting people in the comments just because they like fucking cow milk is mind-blowing. I wanted to be a vegan too but they often sound like freaks.
You know who also likes milk? Calves. You know who doesn't get to drink it? Calves. You know how many calves a cow gives birth to and taken away within 12 hours? At least 4 or 5. Drinking milk is a barbaric fetish. It's nice that you love another animals breast milk I guess...
I remember growing up near a farm and drinking milk that just came from a cow, it was hot and completely different to the milk (or should I say empty liquid pus calories) that you get now.
Fresh farm milk does taste different . Milk in cartons can take anywhere between few days to few weeks post collection to reach the consumer. Most likely this alongwith all that processing alters the taste
I'm lactose intolerant and I'm allergic to milk protein... When I drink milk it takes me like 15 min and then I throw up. That means I have to drink a substitude for milk (if I want some of course). I also think, that something that claims to be a TED should contain info about the consequences of milk production for the enviroment, for the treatment of cows and that animal milk just doesn't fit human nutrition needs :/
I believe the two videos discuss different topics, only tangentially related. 'Dairy is Fucking Scary' is about industry cruelty to the animals. This video skips all that and looks at the effects of milk in human nutrition. Now, here's the thing. Animal cruelty in the dairy industry didn't happen before it became an industry, that is, before the industrial revolution reached that field. Before, humans already drank milk, and things were more sustainable, all at the same time. Secondly, activists have a choice: they either push for the industry to disappear, or to include animal rights in their agenda, while continuing to produce milk and other products, albeit at a (possibly much) slower rate. The conclusion is that human consumption of milk does not rely on, and can exist without, cruelty against animals. If someday we manage to stop the industry cruelty (my choice), we could still find a way to keep producing cow-suffering-free milk for those who want it (also my choice). There is no divide between 'I hate animal cruelty and so will never drink milk' and 'I drink milk and therefore support animal cruelty'. Some nuance is in order here.
"...with the thirst of the consumers, the dairy industry has enlisted methods to set up production..." - the important part that everyone should know is skipped in one simple quote.
Interesting that you can compose a whole essay on milk without mentioning any bad effects that one can get from drinking it. It's all true, what's in the video, but obviously not the whole story.
Pls enlighten us then. I mean I think that skim milk has a higher chance than normal milk for prostate cancer, but other than that I know of no adverse effects

Plants communicate and feel pain just like other living things, targeting something that cannot visually express its agony and treating it as non existent is like beating up the disabled kid (trying not to be too graphic). You should not go for something just because it looks visually better then the alternative on the shallow surface when underneath it is the same. Milk is just like fruits in that it is highly nutritious and you don't kill the organism in order to extract/harvest it. If you don't want to consume it fine with me just don't try to force your opinions onto people. You are a vegetarian good for you! vegan? same! can we please just stop calling each other freaks.
Talha Akram put your hand over a flame, see what happens. put your girlfriends hand over a flame, see what happens. put your cat over a flame, see what happens. put a chicken, cow or any animal over a flame, see what happens. now put a tomato or an apple over a flame, and see what happens. plants do not have a nervous system.

why do human eat animals? grains? fruits? veggies? to get the sufficient nutrients of course.

I love this!
I ❤this channel. Visual, language, sound, info the LOT! Just the intro hurts my ears 😮

TED-ED should do a vid on food preservatives. That'd be curious to see what goes on there.
Oh yeah
Good job to the people who figured out how to do all of this.
Keep up the good work, you are helping humanity with your videos :D

Too bad powdered milk wasn't covered to compare with UHT and pasteurized. I am interested in learning more.
I love TedEd..
But what makes chocolate milk is the real question.
Billy Bob milk+choclate=choccy milk
I call baloney cocks on that Le Birb. I think it has to do with selective breading.
Are you serious or kidding..... chocolate milk is ARTIFICIALLY FLAVORED. It has NOTHING to do with selective breeding. It is flavored milk.
you add the cows milk and then add their poop and mix well and wala chocolate milk ;)
brown cows
Wait goat and camel males can make milk are you sure the scientists didn’t come around at the wrong time
Pasteurization was the best yet worst thing that ever happened to dairy.
ted ed is the best show
"...with the thirst of the consumers, the dairy industry has enlisted methods to set up production..." - the important part that everyone should know is skipped in one simple quote.
you thought no one had your notifications on... well guess what baby ❤
Has all the essential amino acids our bodies don't produce, is tasty as fuck and without it, cornflakes would taste like shit. Milk FTW
I think it would be nice to mention the suffering the animals go through and the effect the dairy industry has on the climate
first of all i wanna say im a huge fan of ur channel , great work guyz and i hope u more success

Yeah indeed... a very touching comment
Anyone 2019?
Plants communicate and feel pain just like other living things, targeting something that cannot visually express its agony and treating it as non existent is like beating up the disabled kid (trying not to be too graphic). You should not go for something just because it looks visually better then the alternative on the shallow surface when underneath it is the same.
Milk is just like fruits in that it is highly nutritious and you don't kill the organism in order to extract/harvest it. If you don't want to consume it fine with me just don't try to force your opinions onto people. You are a vegetarian good for you! vegan? same! can we please just stop calling each other freaks.
Talha Akram put your hand over a flame, see what happens. put your girlfriends hand over a flame, see what happens. put your cat over a flame, see what happens. put a chicken, cow or any animal over a flame, see what happens. now put a tomato or an apple over a flame, and see what happens. plants do not have a nervous system.
exactly.thank you!!friggin vegans and vegitarians i swear
@@glecko9241 feeling pain is not just by screaming and crying.
Plant just have different ways to feel pain
Wrong plants don't have a brain or CNS they don't have pain receptors either.
@@glecko9241 Fun fact: The smell of fresh grass when mowing the lawn are the grass sending out something that basically is a scream for help
سبحان الله الخالق الذي خلق فأبدع
He didn't talk about the dehydrated form of milk that has even longer shelf life.
