To be fair, that's usually not the case, the people who spend more time on the details to make a beautiful looking weapon usually lose, which is unfortunate, but this show is about performance and durability... sometimes ergonomics if the two weapons are neck and neck. Although, handles specifically with swords, if its too round, it will cause the sword to twist in the hand during impact which will cause poor performance in the test. So it does pay off to spend some time on the handle.

I even saw one recently where one guy had his blade warp a little but still won over the other dude whose blade didn't have the slightest damage in the strength test....cause his blade was to heavy..You'd think the contestants would have watched this show and see that pattern and tried to make sure the blade was not a behemoth.

8:39 - when Doug swings it all hysterically and says “it’s fun to wield it is fun to move around it cuts with every slice” that’s when you know who won

While it wasn’t that good, I still admire the use of a leaf spring, just for the uniqueness

I thought for sure Jon was going to lose after putting nearly two days into just the handle. Didn't think he'd have enough time to forge a good sword after that. Turns out, he was good enough to spend the time on details. Still though, if I were him, I'd have forged the blade first just in case something went wrong. You can afford a simple handle, you can't afford a warped blade.

he actually did forged the blade before he made the handle. if you didn't noticed, in this video they skipped his day 1 because they can't show the full round 3 on youtube.

The difference between "this will take time but its worth it" and "its not much but it'll do". Also did anyone else see he not only forged a bronze handle but the blade was damascus. Thats some skill
