Some of Arnold's best one-liners and that steel drum soundtrack is spectacular. This was the height of the box office battle between Stallone and Schwarzenegger. I was 11 when this came out. Saw it in theaters. Blown away.

Wow. I was only born a seven years later after the film was released. And watched it in 1998 on VHS. However, I didn't understand it that much. Then, after a few more years, I watched it again and understood it better. One of the best films featuring Arnold in my opinion. I'm from Russia BTW. And we also really like the movie called Last Action Hero. Although it failed at the box office in your country and is kind of considered a failure film, in our country it is considered one of the best films with Arnold on an equal standing with Commando, Predator and first Terminator. Second Terminator is the best of the best Arnold film IMAO.

For me, this movie isn't any more over the top then modern action movies. You got John Wick wearing bulletproof suits that magically completely stop bullets. He's shot off the roof of a ?four? story building, hits multiple times on the way down and *doesn't* die. You got the Fast and the Furious series which completely breaks all laws of physics. I think the movies are presented differently but compreble in "over the top" ness.

Jaby, I was 20 when this movie came out, and me and my friends went to the theater to see it and loved it. We were clapping and cheering in the movie and swooning over Arnold's bulging physique. We laughed when Sully was tossed off the cliff, we could tell it was a dummy which was how everyone did those kinds of stunts back in the day. Mind you, this was when there were only 3 theaters in the movie house at the time and this movie was a literal "blockbuster" as we all stood outside in a huge, long line down the block waiting to get in to see it. Those were the good old days! .

The Conan movies were what really put Arnold on the map. The first 2 movies were both released before The Terminator, Conan The Destroyer being released the same year, just a few months earlier. Everything after those movies just helped cement him as one of the main action heroes of his generation. Conan The Barbarian was so influential it was considered one of the greatest fantasy action movies until The Lord Of The Rings, which says something. Just imagine if Pumping Iron had never been made, which would have led to him not being cast for Conan, which in turn would have meant never getting any of roles he did. Amazing how one tiny little chance changed everything.

As someone who watched it at the time, I don’t think people were laughing at the cheesiness of it. It was dead serious, at least to me anyway, one liners and all. It was like the pinnacle of action movies back then when Stallone and Arnie ruled the roost. Those were the days when you could put a movie stars name on the poster and guarantee selling tickets. Put Stallone or Arnie’s name on a movie and we were all going to see it.

There´s nothing to rationalize or intellectualize about Commando, it´s the type of 80s movie that many discovered on tv, after a day at work, you sit, you open a beer, unplug your brain and see some straightforward shootout. Checking if it was a dummy thrown out the cliff or a stunt double for Arnold, we didn´t give a damn.
This movie is anyway the failed answer to Rambo from Schwarzi to Stallone. it´s a classic that find its place on shelves between Steven Seagal movie and Chuck Norris ones

Those of us with any aviation experience laughed out loud at Arnold dropping from the nose gear of an airliner. Aside from the vertical drop of at least 100 feet, the takeoff velocity of an airliner is 150+ mph. So, either way, Arnold would have hit that marsh at an unsurvivable speed.

This movie is legendary for having blatant mistakes and straight up comical stunts. When Arnold grabs the guy with the yellow car and picks him up you can CLEARLY see the harness attached to the guy's foot. The yellow car that had been supposedly damaged by the convertible during the car chase scene had the damage on the wrong side when Arnold turns it back down and drives it away. There are other crazy mistakes. See if you can catch them all. Great, entertaining movie that defines 80's action flicks.

We enjoyed the heck out of these over the top, one man army, untouchable hero movies at the time. However, after a whole boatload of them by every action star of the time it got a bit stale (still fun) watching the hero plow through armies of opponents without a scratch. That's why Lethal Weapon in '87 and then Die Hard in '88 and their sequels were such hits. The heroes still took out the bad guys but they got injured along the way. Sometimes they got really messed up and we loved it even when they were still a bit over the top.

Bill Paxton was in The Terminator, Aliens and Predator 2. He's the only actor to have been killed by a Terminator, an Alien and a Predator. Arnold was going to be in the Predator sequel, but other filming obligations like T2 prevented that from occurring. They brought in Gary Busey to play a different character that would have been Dutch, if Arnold was available. In regards to the actions o the military during the final scenes. The army would have been briefed about the situation so seeing a muscular man, carrying a little girl, would be enough evidence that he wasn't an enemy combatant; and they didn't have to engage.

Vernon Wells, who played Bennet, was always a bit of a wild man, so when they filmed the big finale fight he didn't pull his punches. There were several points during that fight where Arnold is genuinely having to fight for real, which made that moment where Bennet's trying to shove his face into the flames especially intense because that wary, anxious look on Arnold's face is very real.

I grew up in a time when we went to the movies or a watched TV shows going in it with knowing what it was, mindless, silly and fun. We didn't overanalizing it or try to make logical sense in what was escapism from the real world. I definitely didn't watch movies from the 50's and 60's judging it by the technology we had in the 80's and 90's which I feel too many youtubers do now base their own biases by 2024 lenses. Which is kinda sad btw.a lot of movies were campy and the viewers knew it and still had fun and enjoyed themselves. I had more fun watching a terrible edited basic stunts movie than perfectly crafted and award winning films.

Commando 2 was in planing. There are some rumors that Commando 2 was changed into Die Hard. Steven de Souza the writer of Commando 1 & 2 and Die Hard denied that. The idea for Commando 2 was that Arnold should break into a huge building while Bruce Willlis tries to escape out of it in Die Hard. So some similarities are still there but Commando 2 wasn't changed into Die Hard. Frank Sinatra was prefered to be John McClane in Die Hard but he said he is to old and to rich to play him so Bruce Willis got the role.

A 'cool story' that means nothing to anyone except me: this was one of my endless rewatch movies as a kid, and the part where Bennett gets electrocuted then rushes at Arnie - seemingly turbo-charged - made my stupid kid brain believe that electricity had that effect on people and I eventually got the guts up to try and shock myself to test the theory. I got thrown across a room and suffered 2nd degree burns to my hand. I didn't die, but I also didn't get superpowered, and so that was probably the biggest disappointment of my life. How I survived my childhood is a mystery...

I’ve always wondered, if you’re a script writer and sat down to watch every Death Wish and Dirty Harry movie over a weekend, is this what you’d write…
Edit: “The Matrix”, as in the movie, comes from the cyberpunk classic, Neuromancer. It’s what introduced the concept of cyberspace and what exists inside of it, The Matrix. Apple TV has it optioned to make into a series, hopefully they don’t mess it up, it’s almost the cyberspace/cyberpunk Bible amongst us in tech. Side note: “hacking a Gibson” in the Movies Hackers is a homage to the author of Neuromancer, William Gibson. It’s a must read of that genre.

As fun as it was watching you two react to this film, I need to see Steph and Kristen do one together lol. Assuming they haven't seen it already, of course. By the way, I don't know if you knew, but Commando is part of a secret cinematic universe that includes Die Hard, Alien, Predator, Speed, 24, a Denzel Washington movie called Ricochet, a short-lived 80s TV series called Supercarrier, and a syndicated Indiana-Jones style 2002-2003 action series called Adventure Inc. Broken Arrow might be part of it too, but that's a just a guess on my part. Anyway, there are articles explaining how it's all connected if you want to check them out. They're fascinating reads.
