I have 2023 S580; not sure if there was an over air update or what but for the first 3 months or so I did have to start the recording manually on start up but now it does turn on automatically at start up 👍
I bought it on NTG6 and indeed, in Romania, it doesn’t automatically start. Which is a real pain and I always forget. BUT, I will try “Hey Mercedes start dashcam recording”, just found out about it today on Nick’s other video and it’s a brilliant idea. Hopefully it will help me never forget again. Also playback is working on NTG6 by going to Media > USB. Thanks Nick for your work, as always
Hi Nick, Thanks for the video update. I bought the in-built one a few weeks back. Its Ok. 720 footage is reasonable quality. You will see what you need to see in an event. Waiting for 1 min before you can start it is annoying. I often start driving before that. Trying to remember to start the actual recording is another thing. I would though, advise your viewers not to get any cheap ole USB. I had one installed in the car and almost had an accident in my recently purchased '21 plate Mercedes-Benz GLA. When I got home and reviewed the footage, the near-miss did not record! Most of the journey from my house to destination did but there was a gap in the recording at the crucial moment. My first port of call to solve this was the USB. I bought a new Scandisk USB with a read speed of 150mb/second. I have reviewed footage since and every journey is complete. BTW, on my model you can only open the MBUX Dashcam file with VLC free software. This shouldn't be the case as MP4 is a standard. Videos are recorded in two minute segemts, however, in the VLC menu, you can select multiple files and play the complete journey as opposed to just playing one at a time. Hope this info helps some of your viewers. 😉
Awh thanks for sharing! Yeah I recommended Sandisk in the description and in the video. You’ve got to make sure you’ve got good read/write speeds for video. I’ve endured that with all of my filming gear! 😂 some of those memory cards are VERY expensive!
When I had my A Class (W177) I almost got the built-in dashcam, so I can see the appeal of not having to worry about routing cables etc. However, if you can route some cables safely (please be careful and don't route cables over the A pillar airbags!), for the money you pay for the Mercedes Dashcam, you can get a 4K Viofo with Front & Rear Dashcam. It will stay with you when you sell your car, the quality of the recordings is much better in my opinion, it has microphone and mine even has WiFi - so I can download footage to my phone in an emergency. You can also have filters to avoid the dashboard glare too - something you won't be able to do on the built-in dashcam. The bonus feature on a third-party dashcam is the parking mode - although Teslas have Sentry Mode - it is parking recording and it records all 4 sides of the car (front, left, right and rear) - I believe is paid feature though - like an extra/option.
Yeah defo! It has pros and cons just like anything. And what works for one may not work for another 🤓 Someone else recommended Viofo so I might check them out when I review some dashcams too 🤓
Nick - I think the auto recording is geo restricted only. Me in the U.S., my 2024 GLE will auto record the moment I start my car (even with engine off as long as power is switched on). I believe mine is NTG7 as it has "starry" animation as you pointed out. Love your videos, super helpful! Learned a lot tricks from you.
Ah yes possibly, there’s a thread in the comments here somewhere of people saying which country it works auto start etc. USA seems to be one of them. Pretty cool though! 🤓 Glad you enjoy them!
I just picked up my 2024 GLC 300, the dashcam has good resolution, I can easily read a license plate on the videos. It also turns on automatically in the US, seems like it takes 10-15 seconds to start recording. My previous dashcam I turned off the sound recording because I don't need my conversations being recorded so I'm fine with it not recording sound.
Hi Nick, I can confirm that you can have automatic recording with the inbuilt dash cam (here in Australia anyway) it gives you the choice to automatically start recording (in a GLC 300 Coupe)
may I know if the recording is for both front and rear, or only the front windscreen view? And is there any parking mode (i.e. record whenever it sense motions even after engine-off)? I recently purchased GLC 300 coupe 2024 in Australia with the plus pack (I have GUARD 360° Package), thinking if I should purchase from the Mercedes store or install my own thanks

I have a 2019 EQC (with NTG6), and the dashcam footage *can* be viewed in the car - although the playback image is smaller than you showed with NTG7. However, it is not intuitive how you view the videos. To do so: Press the Media button, select USB, then select Folders, and navigate to your DashCam memory stick (other memory stick folders also show up here).
Thanks for the video review Nick. I currently have a non-Mercedes Dashcam with front and rear cameras which work very well. I did talk to my MB dealer before having the dashcam fitted as i was looking for a MB solution. They advised me that it would void the warranty on the car if i had an aftermarket system fitted. I decided to go ahead anyway and i'm glad i did as the cameras have proved invaluable on two occasions.
No worries! I’m planning on checking out some Dashcams later this year and that is one thing I want to clarify with some manufacturers officially. Under my understanding (not verified yet), wiring a dashcam would be fine and not invalidate a warranty. The “warranty invalidation” is when something goes wrong. Say for example someone installed it for you but then something stopped working on the car because of it, then you wouldn’t be covered for that item. Again that’s how I see it, I want to get it clarified way before I make some videos on Dashcams anyway.
As for me i am using 3rd party dash cam and additional of battery so i can have 24hr recording. Its nice to have the original dash cam but i saw the resolutions is real bad compared to 3rd party. Thanks for sharing Nick ❤❤❤❤
Hi Nick, another useful video. I've had the app on NTG6 for 2 years. Very useful, but remembering to start it every time can be a problem, as this has to be done every the ignition is turned off. Also loop recording is OK for most of the time, but I've had problems a couple of times when system has stopped when flash drive is full. Also, I can playback on the multimedia system on mine. Seems to be there are several anomalies!! however, all in all a very useful feature.
I have Blackvue cameras installed in additon which I transferred over from my previous model 2019 A35 to new facelift 2023 A35, what I have found is that new model is a hybrid and unlike previous model the camera system stays in parking mode with motion detection because of the 12v battery having to be constantly operational. Main issue is if you don't drive the car for few days everyday or leave idle for sometime if you go on holiday then that 12v battery will start sending alerts that certain key features like starting the car will be non operational.

I have the same car as you and looked at the in built dash cam. First thing that put me off was the £200 activation, ouch. And it is so limited in its functioning. Ie on or off. I purchased the next base 522 with the optional rear window add on camera. And it’s brilliant. Can’t fault it with loads of permutations for setting up, parking, movement etc. down side is wiring but managed to hide everything. Keep up the great work.
Did you wire it yourself? I’ve been wanting to get a 3rd party dash-cam but would never use Halfords again to do it as they did a botch job on my previous Audi.
@@J10Wilshere hi yes I wired it myself. Took about 2 hours. Fitted it top right hand side of windscreen, and fed live feed down window strut, removed small access panel and fed cable back to transmission tunnel behind the steering wheel. Fed cable along tunnel just tucking it up under edge of pvc cover. Removed rear seat usb panel and brought cable up into that space, then removed felt cover from storage bin on tunnel and bored 3/8 hole through base of storage bin and brought cable up and connected into the C usb port. The rear camera was just wired along the top of the door struts to the rear window. Only cables showing are at the top of the windscreen about 25mm each cable. I did buy a set of plastic pry tools which were invaluable, hope this helps.

Interesting fact: the latest BMW X1 (at least in Poland), when specd with the 360 cameras, will automatically record the drive (from all cameras). When you want to save the recording (internal drive too), you just long press the parking camera button. It will save up to 30 secs preceding the button press, and 30 secs following the press. Neat stuff!
I have the factory dash cam on my 2021 AMG GLC 43. I would not order it again if i had it to do over. It doesn't auto start. It takes it up to 2 minutes to be available to start recording after engine start so you are already down the road before you can even start it unless you want to sit there idling for up to 2 minutes. The resolution is terrible. You cant even read the license plate of the car in front of you at a stop light at night. The augmented reality feature it enables for the satnav is marginally useful. I'd probably just buy an aftermarket dash cam for the cost if i had it to do over.
Hi Nick, great video...just took delivery of my GLC 300d Premium Plus which I am wanting to fit the dashcam feature (via provided built in app) so this was very helpful. I had a new Touareg R+ for 4 years with inbuilt VW/Audi front and rear dashcams...they autostarted and also when you parked confirmed 'vehicle parked and in surveillance mode'...when you next started up it insisted (rather reassuringly) on telling you surveillance off and in drive mode...once fitted you truly forgot about it until you needed it (twice) and as it was on constant loop with 3 min vids with GPS and crash sensor (with auto enhancement mode 3 see before and after) it always worked like a charm...really miss it...I could watch myself cleaning the car in real time or playback if I was really bored.. :)...
Auto start must be a regulation, because my 2023 dashcam does autostart, but I am in the US. I know autostart was new for 2023 as even my dealer was surprised it could be done. I can also play back on my car even though I have v6 and not v7.

Just a tip: This might be country specific, but if you enable “Loop Recording”, you can go to the Dashcam Settings and enable “Automatic Start Recording”. Atleast in Denmark, using NTG7, this is possible.
Hi Nick, in cars with NTG7 where the 360 camera is equipped there is the 360 guard feature which you can buy in the mercedes me store (at least in germany). This will do screenshots of all 5 cameras if someone hits into your car will you are parked. Photos are stored on MBUX and sent to your phone. If this is available in UK you could try it out? You have to shake on your parked car to simulate a park damage 😊
If this does not include auto start, whats the point. I bet at some point of time, one is going to miss "start recording command" and as murphy's law would have it - thats exactly when one will get involved in an incident/ accident. I got the Merc dashcam installed in my V167 GLE and have been very happy with it. Night time recording is great, day time recording is very crisp - has 24 hour parking recording with radar sensing and a wifi playback for driving/ parking videos. Just works great. I wonder why its rear companion camera is always out of stock - worldwide. I had to settle in for a 3rd party camera for that one.
Thanks for another great video. I'll be sticking with my 3rd party dashcam as it's automated to turn on once the car is on and I otherwise don't need to touch it. If I need to pull a video I can quickly find and download the one I need.
I mentioned before I have a transcend dash cam for 7 years now. It auto starts. Also, it has an automatic feature where if I am in a collision or have to brake hard it saves footage to an emergency folder on the SD card. So for me until the built in one can do what my third party dashcam can then it an No from me.
I have AR, (NTG6) but no dashcam… Mercedes says it is not possible on my car because AR is not the only feature u need for dashcam… they say you need also traffic light animation on screen and when moving your hands reconizing or something. I have a Blackvue 900 dual dashcam. Payd almost €2500 for to built in. With a battery package. And a internetconnection. Live view and cloud function so I can see and download everything on my phone. It works fine👌🏾
@npoleary Another great video. As someone else has stated, I think the auto recording is depending on country. I'm in Denmark driving a 2021 C-Class, and my dashcam starts automatically, and it does loop recordings, and also automatically deletes older recordings when the USB Stick is full....
Just purchased a 2023 S580 in the US. Once I log-in with my fingerprint, the Dashcam automatically starts recording entire time driving in small time segments onto my external drive. I would like it if it would record when parked, but it doesn’t, especially in a parking lot when parked and someone gets close (Tesla does this really well). I have a 2 TB Disk connected in the center console to save recordings. Love your videos - interesting to see the difference in what UK allows and what US allows in terms of Lights, Recordings and other fascinating features.
I decided to add this to my new A250e as it was a simple solution and avoided having to stick something else on the screen and having to route power to it. I admit having to manually start it is a faff but the real pain is having to wait for the app to load which seems to take about 10 secs or more after pressing the start button. Bearing in mind the camera already exists I think MB are asking a lot of money for this. TBH I wouldn’t do it again, I’d go down the third party route.
Hello Nick, congrat for your instructional videos. I've learned a lot from them. I still can't figured out how to activate and deactivate the keyless go. That nobody can open the mercedes even with the FOB on my hand.
This is no longer the case, I have the 2024 GLE 450 and the picture quality is brilliant, secondly my cam starts up the second the vehicle starts. The only way it doesnt is if you choose to do it manually or if you have a security code on your mbux system, after you enter the 4 digit code it unlock mbux and recording begin. I cannot express how clear and beautiful the play back footage is. I just input the usb-C in my cellphone and you access all recordings and you can just forward any of the incremental 2 min. slots to whatsapp and so on. I luv it, very pleased. Very much worth the $200 cost @ manufacture ordering point.
One time purchase but I kept forgetting to turn it on so bought aftermarket automatic start much better quality recording and an App for instant download/viewing at a much cheaper price. Except for me as I bought both…..
Nick... Thank you for all the good information. On my second MB in less then two years. My new AMG GLE 63S WILL start recording when I start the engine. Think in this video you said they are different around the makes and models and will not automatically start. . 2024 just got it... USA... Later..Gerry
I have a MBUX7 on my C Class. It’s great but so annoying having to manually set it to run every trip. I still forget to do it 50% of the time. With the Guard 360 it does the pictures when someone bumps into the car when Im away.
@@dannyvafa3639the loop just loops the recording and overwrites itself when the memory drive is full….on mine anyway. I believe the auto start is not allowed

Unless it’s changed recently, I was in a Mercedes last week and it’s still a manual start. UK is manual for some reason but in some other countries like the USA it has an auto start.

I purchased the Dashcam though digital extras and it allows auto start when you add a USB device for loop recrding. I don't need to switch it on everytime. The only annoying thing seems to be the Warning message regarding privacy in my region. but is goes away after 10 secs, Check it out when you try the new EQB = range.

Yes I saw that one It’s expensive, I’d love to check it out however one thing I do want to test is any of them overheating. It’s one thing having all of these features but I’m sure I read that it had image stabilisation, it’ll be one thing I look out for when I get my hands on some to test!
Hi Nick. Nice video. I got the dashcamera NTG7 in my Glc 400e and in denmark it comes with autostart.😊I'm not impressed with the video quality in spite it's 1920x1280. It only capture with 25 frames/sec. and it's not enough when you freeze the picture on moving cars to see the numberplates properly.
To be fair - the quality aint bad - many dashcams have exactly the same imaging hardware (there are mebe 2 or 3 main mftrs?) - so this is 'par for course'. The main motivation for me is neatness - I really do not like the look of aftermarket stuff cluttering up my beautiful interior - and 10% off at the moment - so - I think I'll have it! I have an E 400 from 2022, with Augmented + 360 cameras, Dashcam License available but deactivated. Option available only on the System Menu of the MBUX , under the “Licenses” and not available on my MercedesMe as option to purchase. I asked the MB dealer from where I bought the car to check and to activate it and he took almost a week to get an official statement from MB that this option is not possible to activate because in Germany is not allowed. Now I plan to revert to my Blackvue 4K as I found the Dashcam quite useful. I wanted to avoid installing or adding any more wires, but this is it .. Resolution was anyway a joke 720p, I guess, is only ok to distinguish colors and shapes but true is better sometimes than nothing.
I really had the situation when the other guy in front of me revers his car while waiting at the red light and claim that I hit him from behind. Without having the Daschcam I would probably had to go in court and judge as it was my word against his. With the Dashcam, situation was solved in 15 mins, and the driver had to retract his words and admit his fault after seeing the video. Nevertheless by low, in Germany, these video evidences are not taken into consideration if go in court. So, I got lucky the guy acknowledge this fault after seeing the video. @@npoleary

Depends how long you wanted to record for, but to start I’d say anything 32GB and up would be okay. The higher the capacity the more it’ll store 🤓 Yes it can do 👍🏼 That’s the thing called Loop Recording Thank you! I’ll keep them coming! 🤓
Hmm I live in Cyprus and own a GLA35 2024 and I thought it's cool feature to have this for -240 euro . Just the manual start it gives me second thoughts . Just always I have to mute the annoying biiiibb for speed limit and auto/start engine so perhaps one more extra touch will be ok 🤔 ... driving these days new cars it's like a video game 😂

I mean what the heck. anyway my mate had listened to me about the EQC Mercedes well, you won't believe it, he's just ordered one. my car is a 1.6 turbo wild horses 216 full tank distance just under 600 miles Kia not the plug in the other type. plus I'm getting extra kit you can't buy and that is the same foot steps you see on the EQC bottom of the doors I don't no what you call them car has a missive panoramic roof with 2 power blinds how about that left indicator camera comes on right indicator camera on turn off the car the power seat automatically alters into position to dump you out getting back in turn on power seat automatically goes back to driving mode all hands free nothing to touch. wait for it I'm coming to the best bit if the car is in a tight space example can't get the door open I hot a button on the remote and the car comes to me how cool is that ordered a white with full black top. drop dead gorges just like my X girlfriend this car was not on my shopping list at all getting it this May I can hear the spanners at work full name Sportage 1.6T GDi 212 HEV GT-Line S 5dr Auto AWD Hybrid Estate. full paddle shift there is a setting driving on sand. I don't think I'm going to the beach any time soon snow off road terrain etc etc

Hey Nick, love all you videos,…I purchased the factory dashcam for my new 2024 C43, im using the recommended sandisk usbc storage device, very disappointed as sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t, when it doesn’t work I have to unmount the usb drive and re insert it then it starts wirking again, very glicthy, I will be look at external dashcams to replace it!
Don’t do what I done and use the top usb c port .. as when you close the draw back cover it will catch the sandisk and result in damage to both the cover and devise
Purchased a used 2023 GLA45 which has the dashcam hardware and NTG6. The Mercedes USA store no longer allows one to activate the dashcam for $200. They told me it has been discontinued. Understanding the limitations, I still wanted to have it, but there is nothing they can do about it.

Thank you! Some models can show the footage on screen where as some can’t, you have to watch on a PC or Laptop. But I’m sure I saw something in the Dashcam menu called Gallery or something.
I had it on my 2020 e-class Cabriolet using NTG6. It wasn’t brilliant. It was functional but very grainy. The most annoying thing is that I spent £200 on it and I can’t transfer it to the SL that I have on order so I have to pay for it again which is why I’m considering buying a third-party Dash cam
Ah yes all Mercedes me Digital Extras stay with the car. That’s always been like that. But this is one of the reasons I wanted to try it out again and see if there were any changes. I’ll buy some dashcams in the coming months and test them out! Have you thought of any you might consider?

The lack of an auto start would be a deal breaker for me. I invariably drive my C200 in eco mode, and it took me a long time (years!) to remember to switch it over when I set off. (And it passing it's a nuisance that you can't set the car to default to eco or whatever you prefer.) Also, re cost, I assume it's an annual subscription like all the other Mercedes me add ons. You didn't mention how much it costs, but I bet it would quickly overtake the cost of a separate dash cam.
This is exactly why I wanted to re-visit this to see if there are any changes. Yes it would be good if like my Dynamic Select would retain the settings but sadly it will always reset to the default driving profile which in Mercedes is Comfort. Ah no it’s a one time purchase. Costs will most likely vary round the world, and if it changed in the future I would then have incorrect content on the video so decided not to draw too much attention to it. At the time I paid £200 which you can see on the screen at 20 seconds in.
I imagine getting into an accident knowing you spent the extra money for the dash cam yet forgot to switch it on at precisely the trip when you really needed it.

Happy New Year! Thank you! So in the video two videos (MBUX NTG 6 & NTG 7), I’ve covered everything there is to know about the Dashcam on Augmented Reality in Mercedes. Sadly there are no other features such as rear cameras because there isn’t one at the rear that’s suitable for capturing video like that.
Hi Nick. During the video you said the speed at the bottom of the screen could only be kph. Towards the end of the video it was showing mph. Personally, I prefer my Nextbase because it auto starts.
It would have been better, on a clip about the dashcam rather than the MBUX system, if there was more info about how to view the footage, both in and out of the car.
On this new dashcam version, unplug the memory stick from the car and plug into a computer 🤓 All the files will be there just like 3rd party dashcams, no codecs or conversions needed 👍🏼 To playback in the car just head to Dashcam app and you see them there 👍🏼
Hi Nick, another really great video mate. I’ve got an A250e and use Apple Car Play and there’s only one socket that works for that, does the dashcam feature use that one or can you use any of the ports?
No sadly the rear camera is a reversing camera. It’s outside and is two low for dashcam footage. Being outside it’s behind a cover to prevent it getting dirty all the time and it’s far too low, dashcams need to be eye level for example at the height of the rear window.
Nick, thanks for your excellent videos. Re. MBUX and the versions of NTG, I have an 2023 ‘73’ AMG GLC43 Coupe, have identified my system as NTG6. A bit of a shocker that a late model premium car doesn’t have the later electronics. Is there a firmware upgrade? Cheers, Bob
Hey Bob, thank you! Well each model in Mercedes is updated at different times, so for example the latest generation of MBUX I’ve seen is in an E-Class (it’s either MBUX NTG 8 or 7.5) or gen 3. Mercedes haven’t confirmed the name. These are not software updates though, there new generations of multimedia system, new hardware etc But what orientation is the screen in your car? Is it landscape or portrait?
The vertical screen is the latest model of the GLC 43. Regardless of which one you have though, still a cool car! I love the GLC Coupe’s as they have really curved roof but higher driving position. Plus an AMG just adds to that 👍🏼
Hey Nick. I’ve just purchased the dashcam function via Mercedes Me. I have a 2021 GLC running NTG6. I’m struggling to add the dash am as a favourite (for quick access from the * button) - I’ve tried 2 ways.. 1 - add new favourite. It doesn’t have “apps” in there. 2 - when in the dashcam app, I’ve tried holding down the record button to favourite, which looks like it should work, but I get an error saying “can’t do this function” Any suggestions where I’m going wrong?
Really sorry I don’t have access to a car with MBUX NTG 6 right now unless it’s changed since I produced the video before. I thought I remember you can hold the Star button on the item, or go to favourites and add favourite at the end and add from there.

No worries! I’ve just wired it into the 12v socket for now. But when I review some 3rd party dashcams I will check out the different ways you can install one (warranties / ease of installation / 12v / USB’s etc)

Usually a cable of 4m to 5m but I’ve tucked it into the panels. You can see it in my A-Class Review when I got it back after repair 🤓 But I aim to cover dashcams in the summer!
The March 24 A class brochure shows "MBUX Interior Assistant with 3D camera in the overhead control panel" but doesn't mention augmented reality. Does it still have the inbuilt dashcam?
You’ll have to check with Mercedes staff at a dealer for exact specifics. They’ll be able to let let you know for sure if a car has it or not 🤓 They have systems where they can check the specs of individual cars. I wish I had access to that! 😅
@@npoleary dealer said all A class premium plus have the augmented reality. But it's not on the spec sheet nor on the March 24 brochure so I'm not sure. The Dec 23 brochure had it. Should I insist for an updated spec sheet? Could it be that it should be on the car and actually not have it? Like a factory error? Does that ever happen? If it doesn't have it fine, but if it should and I'm paying for a car that should have it then I want it on there.
All car manufacturers change the specs several times throughout the year. I cover a few of them and they all do the same. It depends on the brochure and when your car was built and of course the specs available at the time. Yes you can ask a dealer to help run through the spec of the car but I don’t believe they can give you a spec sheet as such. You’ll have to ask them 😎 I do have an archive of Mercedes brochures for the UK if that helps. Hi Nick, My Tesla, in Canada, records the cameras all around the car all the time, automatically. If I want to save a piece of footage, I just blow the horn. I wonder if Teslas in the UK do that automatically or are they manual start. Thinking of getting back into a 2024 GLC Coupe PHEV when they are released over here.
Ah nice! Yes I’ve heard Tesla’s can save footage from their 360° cameras (I think they’re mounted inside or at least behind glass/plastic to keep them clean). The horn auto save is a good idea!
So as you can leave comments you most likely (believe it or not) have a RUclips account where you can upload videos. You can upload onto there and leave the video as “Unlisted”. This means that anyone can view the video but only with the link you send them (for example your insurance company) If you mark Private then only you will be able to see it. There’s also a separate service called WeTransfer, the links expire within 7 days though so you could use that too. Both are free I should add!
@@npoleary Would be interesting to see you do this. I had one fitted but the quality and features were very disappointing considering it cost almost £800 including fitting. The cameras also need extra wiring looms that are extra as well.
Personally I think that all new vehicles should be fitted with front & rear 4k cameras by law & record whenever the ignition is switched on, also records to an internal hard drive that can't be removed or wiped, on a continuous loop recording that can be downloaded in the event of an accident or any other criminal activity by the owner of the vehicle or the police.
I agree and disagree 😂 More laws urrggh but I do agree with on-board recording for cars. That sounds almost like a black box that’s found in planes. Records all of the info right up until the moment 👍🏼
@@npoleary A black box for cars, that's exactly what I meant, no more arguments about who falt an accident was as it will be all be recorded, no more speeding muppets putting other people's lives at risk because the evidence will be recorded, it should also bring down insurance premiums too. 360 remote viewing would be nice too, a bit like Tesla's sentry mode.
I just bought an a200l after the facelift. I see on the windshield something similar to what you show in the video. I seemingly have two lenses - the upper one for sign recognition and the lower one. However, there is no lens there but a cap (?). Is it possible that this is not installed and is there any chance that Mercedes can add it?
They’ll usually be two things at the top, one is a light and rain sensor and the other will be for brake assist or lane assist systems. The very bottom part is for Augmented Reality which you must spec at factory, you wouldn’t be able to get it fitted afterward as sadly main Mercedes dealers will not and cannot “retrofit” things. They’re only allowed to sell cars as they’re described as per their spec sheets.
Bought a brand new 2023 AMG GT53 with augmented reality navigation features. Location was in WA, USA. BUT the dashcam is incompatible with my car and I couldn’t purchase it. 😢
Oh dang that’s a shame It does vary round the world so isn’t available everywhere. There’s always 3rd party solutions, I’m planning on reviewing some this year!

Thank goodness my 2023 C43 AMG automatically starts recording 360° when an “accident” is detected! I can activate it by rocking the car with my foot on the bumper. The car sends it right to my iPhone via MercedesMe. I’m wondering if the dash cam will do that without a memory stick too? Does anyone in the USA know?
Hi Nick, Happy New Year. I have the same year A class as your self and had been assessing the option of triggering the inbuilt dash cam. However, after watching your review of the same, my mind is now made up. For £200, the purchase is poor value for money. Yes, there is no wiring, but apart from that, I see no other redeeming feature. I passed my driving test in 1966 and to date (may come back to haunt me) have never had an occasion in which a dash cam would have benefited me. However, having an expensive car, using the dash cam as a level of security, protecting my car when it is parked, is ruled out with this system. In February 2020, some kind sole literally ripped one of my wing mirrors off. The collision report told me it had happened at 21:00, but no other info. Of course, it doesn’t give that protection. As a matter interesting, my car ha little cameras in the wing mirrors. Would they be connected to the dash cam? Regards Paul Whittle 3:04
Ah thanks for sharing Paul, oh no what a horrible thing that happened to you :( Sadly no 360° cameras are just parking cameras they don’t record. They’re located on the outside so wouldn’t be suitable, they’d get dirty from the road! Glad I helped explain it all though! Happy New Year to you too!
Just depends what you selected when you bought it (if it was from new). Some cars have increased prices for other things, like being All-Electric (due to their battery and electric motors.) I’d love to go for one by the way, maybe my next car! But of course specs change and vary over time, I do recall reading in the comments on my channel that it wasn’t available for a while due to the semiconductor shortage (thankfully that’s hopefully gone now!) If you chat to Mercedes they can let you know if it’s back again if you decide to change.
I have an E53 coupe 2023, and the recording function does not reliably work when starting the car. Sometimes it takes a good 5 minutes for it to confirm its started recording. I've tried with different USB sticks (both USB A and C) but I get the same pattern of unreliability. Have you ever seen this or know if its a known issue? Otherwise I'll get MB to check it out.
No sadly not, it worked fine for me :( It might not be this as you’ve tried another memory stick but make sure they’ve got good read/write speeds. It needs to be good to cope with the constant writing of data to the memory stick. I found this when I made a dashcam video a couple of years ago. Maybe reach out to Mercedes and see what they say?
Hi Nick, Ive got the NTG6 on my S213 E53 and I’m using Loop Recording; however on some occasions it does not work at all even after 1 hour of driving, I get the message ‘Function Unavailable’. This still occurs even if I delete 90% of the footage from the USB !!
Have you tried formatting the memory stick / or the device you’re using to save the footage on? I have to do this from time to time for my camera equipment and including my 3rd party dashcam. Also check to make sure the memory stick / external storage has fast data transfer speeds.
@@npoleary Hi Nick, no I have not tried re-formatting the memory stick because it has my music in the 'Music' folder, SCDB Speed Cams in the "POI' folder and the MB Dashcam in the 'POI' folder all on the same stick. There is however, a good reason for putting everything on the same stick because when I bought the car I had my music and SCDB cams on one stick and the MB dashcam on a second stick. However, MBUX does not work correctly with two separate sticks and this is well documented by users on the MB Forums. Lots of guys are saying that the MBUX system is in need of a software update to address this issue. Hope this helps, Mike
Ah yes Mike that’s right MBUX from day one back 2018 will only ever recognise one memory stick. It could be that you’re maxing out the read and write speeds on the memory stick. There’s 3 tasks going on there which might be a bit much for it. Sadly there’s no way to tell apart from if you experience issues like that. Trust me I’ve been there before, been filming and taking photos etc and the camera caught up with the read and write speeds of the memory card and I thought it had recorded something but it hadn’t. As I was talking to camera I didn’t notice the error message. I had to go and buy faster SD cards so there is a possibility that it could be that.

I just bought the app, plugged a usb c card reader with a Sandisk SD card. But the app said usb storage not present. Any idea if I should format the SD card? What file system?
Does the Sandisk stick need to be in the main USB C port in the front console or can you use any of the USB A ports inside the armrest console? When you first start it up, are there onscreen instructions? How many Gigs is best for the memory stick?
They’re all USB-C (unless it’s different round the world). Just press Home and go to Apps and you’ll see Dashcam if the car has it or you’ve purchased it. It depends how long you want to record for, I would say for 720p / 1080p footage a minimum of 32GB, ideally 64GB or higher to record at least a few hours / days with depending on your driving.
Thanks Nick, I was going to buy this features, but it seems the features stays with the vehicle and cannot be transfer to my future car, whereas a 3rd party device can. I recently had a hit a run, my car alarm did not activate to alert me when I was in the house, I was quite surprise. I did however receive the collision prompt from Mercedes ME App, but its all too late as it didn't give me the opportunity to run out to see who was responsible for the hit and run.... I have enquired about this with the Mercedes customer service and still waiting for their response. I remember with some of my previous and older/cheaper vehicles with an alarm system, car alarm would audibly sound/alert/activate, but why is my 2021 GLS does not activate the alarm??? Very surprise... I am now left in losing my NCB if I claim insurance because they are no responsible person for the collision. Could you talk about this feature and let everyone knows about this basic features that don't work with Mercedes.... certainly with the GLS Mercedes flag ship vehicle.
Oh yes absolutely all Mercedes me Digital Extras stay with the car. Oh no! Well I don’t know on cars what would trigger the alarm (in terms of the severity of a crash) it must have been very small or possible even slow that’s probably why the alarm didn’t trigger. A small bump might not do it. You’ll have to ask Mercedes when they get back to you. Do you have any security cameras at home / doorbells / do your neighbours have any? I’m guessing you know the time so you can pin point roughly when it happened.

It depends on the specification, it’s an Augmented Reality Camera on most cars like mine but depending on availability and where you live you can upgrade it to a dashcam again like what I did. This is only if you want to, check out the pros and cons and see if it’s worth it for you compared to a 3rd party one 🙏

I have 2023 S580; not sure if there was an over air update or what but for the first 3 months or so I did have to start the recording manually on start up but now it does turn on automatically at start up 👍
I bought it on NTG6 and indeed, in Romania, it doesn’t automatically start. Which is a real pain and I always forget. BUT, I will try “Hey Mercedes start dashcam recording”, just found out about it today on Nick’s other video and it’s a brilliant idea. Hopefully it will help me never forget again. Also playback is working on NTG6 by going to Media > USB. Thanks Nick for your work, as always
Hi Nick, Thanks for the video update. I bought the in-built one a few weeks back. Its Ok. 720 footage is reasonable quality. You will see what you need to see in an event. Waiting for 1 min before you can start it is annoying. I often start driving before that. Trying to remember to start the actual recording is another thing. I would though, advise your viewers not to get any cheap ole USB. I had one installed in the car and almost had an accident in my recently purchased '21 plate Mercedes-Benz GLA. When I got home and reviewed the footage, the near-miss did not record! Most of the journey from my house to destination did but there was a gap in the recording at the crucial moment. My first port of call to solve this was the USB. I bought a new Scandisk USB with a read speed of 150mb/second. I have reviewed footage since and every journey is complete. BTW, on my model you can only open the MBUX Dashcam file with VLC free software. This shouldn't be the case as MP4 is a standard. Videos are recorded in two minute segemts, however, in the VLC menu, you can select multiple files and play the complete journey as opposed to just playing one at a time. Hope this info helps some of your viewers. 😉
Awh thanks for sharing! Yeah I recommended Sandisk in the description and in the video. You’ve got to make sure you’ve got good read/write speeds for video. I’ve endured that with all of my filming gear! 😂 some of those memory cards are VERY expensive!
When I had my A Class (W177) I almost got the built-in dashcam, so I can see the appeal of not having to worry about routing cables etc. However, if you can route some cables safely (please be careful and don't route cables over the A pillar airbags!), for the money you pay for the Mercedes Dashcam, you can get a 4K Viofo with Front & Rear Dashcam. It will stay with you when you sell your car, the quality of the recordings is much better in my opinion, it has microphone and mine even has WiFi - so I can download footage to my phone in an emergency. You can also have filters to avoid the dashboard glare too - something you won't be able to do on the built-in dashcam. The bonus feature on a third-party dashcam is the parking mode - although Teslas have Sentry Mode - it is parking recording and it records all 4 sides of the car (front, left, right and rear) - I believe is paid feature though - like an extra/option.

Nick - I think the auto recording is geo restricted only. Me in the U.S., my 2024 GLE will auto record the moment I start my car (even with engine off as long as power is switched on). I believe mine is NTG7 as it has "starry" animation as you pointed out.

I just picked up my 2024 GLC 300, the dashcam has good resolution, I can easily read a license plate on the videos. It also turns on automatically in the US, seems like it takes 10-15 seconds to start recording. My previous dashcam I turned off the sound recording because I don't need my conversations being recorded so I'm fine with it not recording sound.
Hi Nick, I can confirm that you can have automatic recording with the inbuilt dash cam (here in Australia anyway) it gives you the choice to automatically start recording (in a GLC 300 Coupe)

It is a simple forward facing camera with a manual start (in the UK) for some other countries it’s automatic.

I have a 2019 EQC (with NTG6), and the dashcam footage *can* be viewed in the car - although the playback image is smaller than you showed with NTG7. However, it is not intuitive how you view the videos.
To do so: Press the Media button, select USB, then select Folders, and navigate to your DashCam memory stick (other memory stick folders also show up here).
Thanks for the video review Nick. I currently have a non-Mercedes Dashcam with front and rear cameras which work very well. I did talk to my MB dealer before having the dashcam fitted as i was looking for a MB solution. They advised me that it would void the warranty on the car if i had an aftermarket system fitted. I decided to go ahead anyway and i'm glad i did as the cameras have proved invaluable on two occasions.

I’m planning on checking out some Dashcams later this year and that is one thing I want to clarify with some manufacturers officially.
Under my understanding (not verified yet), wiring a dashcam would be fine and not invalidate a warranty. The “warranty invalidation” is when something goes wrong. Say for example someone installed it for you but then something stopped working on the car because of it, then you wouldn’t be covered for that item.
Again that’s how I see it, I want to get it clarified way before I make some videos on Dashcams anyway.
As for me i am using 3rd party dash cam and additional of battery so i can have 24hr recording. Its nice to have the original dash cam but i saw the resolutions is real bad compared to 3rd party. Thanks for sharing Nick ❤❤❤❤

The resolution is not "real bad", but there are dash cams with higher resolution e.g. 2K-4K.
Hi Nick, another useful video. I've had the app on NTG6 for 2 years. Very useful, but remembering to start it every time can be a problem, as this has to be done every the ignition is turned off. Also loop recording is OK for most of the time, but I've had problems a couple of times when system has stopped when flash drive is full. Also, I can playback on the multimedia system on mine. Seems to be there are several anomalies!! however, all in all a very useful feature.

I have Blackvue cameras installed in additon which I transferred over from my previous model 2019 A35 to new facelift 2023 A35, what I have found is that new model is a hybrid and unlike previous model the camera system stays in parking mode with motion detection because of the 12v battery having to be constantly operational. Main issue is if you don't drive the car for few days everyday or leave idle for sometime if you go on holiday then that 12v battery will start sending alerts that certain key features like starting the car will be non operational.

the lack of autostart is a major pain each time you drive
I have the same car as you and looked at the in built dash cam. First thing that put me off was the £200 activation, ouch. And it is so limited in its functioning. Ie on or off. I purchased the next base 522 with the optional rear window add on camera. And it’s brilliant. Can’t fault it with loads of permutations for setting up, parking, movement etc. down side is wiring but managed to hide everything. Keep up the great work.
Did you wire it yourself? I’ve been wanting to get a 3rd party dash-cam but would never use Halfords again to do it as they did a botch job on my previous Audi.
@@J10Wilshere hi yes I wired it myself. Took about 2 hours. Fitted it top right hand side of windscreen, and fed live feed down window strut, removed small access panel and fed cable back to transmission tunnel behind the steering wheel. Fed cable along tunnel just tucking it up under edge of pvc cover. Removed rear seat usb panel and brought cable up into that space, then removed felt cover from storage bin on tunnel and bored 3/8 hole through base of storage bin and brought cable up and connected into the C usb port. The rear camera was just wired along the top of the door struts to the rear window. Only cables showing are at the top of the windscreen about 25mm each cable. I did buy a set of plastic pry tools which were invaluable, hope this helps.

Interesting fact: the latest BMW X1 (at least in Poland), when specd with the 360 cameras, will automatically record the drive (from all cameras). When you want to save the recording (internal drive too), you just long press the parking camera button. It will save up to 30 secs preceding the button press, and 30 secs following the press. Neat stuff!

I have the factory dash cam on my 2021 AMG GLC 43. I would not order it again if i had it to do over. It doesn't auto start. It takes it up to 2 minutes to be available to start recording after engine start so you are already down the road before you can even start it unless you want to sit there idling for up to 2 minutes. The resolution is terrible. You cant even read the license plate of the car in front of you at a stop light at night. The augmented reality feature it enables for the satnav is marginally useful. I'd probably just buy an aftermarket dash cam for the cost if i had it to do over.

Hi Nick, great video...just took delivery of my GLC 300d Premium Plus which I am wanting to fit the dashcam feature (via provided built in app) so this was very helpful. I had a new Touareg R+ for 4 years with inbuilt VW/Audi front and rear dashcams...they autostarted and also when you parked confirmed 'vehicle parked and in surveillance mode'...when you next started up it insisted (rather reassuringly) on telling you surveillance off and in drive mode...once fitted you truly forgot about it until you needed it (twice) and as it was on constant loop with 3 min vids with GPS and crash sensor (with auto enhancement mode 3 see before and after) it always worked like a charm...really miss it...I could watch myself cleaning the car in real time or playback if I was really bored.. :)...

Auto start must be a regulation, because my 2023 dashcam does autostart, but I am in the US. I know autostart was new for 2023 as even my dealer was surprised it could be done. I can also play back on my car even though I have v6 and not v7.

Just a tip: This might be country specific, but if you enable “Loop Recording”, you can go to the Dashcam Settings and enable “Automatic Start Recording”.
Atleast in Denmark, using NTG7, this is possible.
This setting is also available in the US if you enable "loop recording" (on NTG7)

Hi Nick, in cars with NTG7 where the 360 camera is equipped there is the 360 guard feature which you can buy in the mercedes me store (at least in germany). This will do screenshots of all 5 cameras if someone hits into your car will you are parked. Photos are stored on MBUX and sent to your phone. If this is available in UK you could try it out? You have to shake on your parked car to simulate a park damage 😊
my car has the 360 camera but where can I buy this function?

If this does not include auto start, whats the point. I bet at some point of time, one is going to miss "start recording command" and as murphy's law would have it - thats exactly when one will get involved in an incident/ accident. I got the Merc dashcam installed in my V167 GLE and have been very happy with it. Night time recording is great, day time recording is very crisp - has 24 hour parking recording with radar sensing and a wifi playback for driving/ parking videos. Just works great. I wonder why its rear companion camera is always out of stock - worldwide. I had to settle in for a 3rd party camera for that one.
Thanks for another great video. I'll be sticking with my 3rd party dashcam as it's automated to turn on once the car is on and I otherwise don't need to touch it. If I need to pull a video I can quickly find and download the one I need.

I mentioned before I have a transcend dash cam for 7 years now. It auto starts. Also, it has an automatic feature where if I am in a collision or have to brake hard it saves footage to an emergency folder on the SD card. So for me until the built in one can do what my third party dashcam can then it an No from me.

I have AR, (NTG6) but no dashcam… Mercedes says it is not possible on my car because AR is not the only feature u need for dashcam… they say you need also traffic light animation on screen and when moving your hands reconizing or something. I have a Blackvue 900 dual dashcam. Payd almost €2500 for to built in. With a battery package. And a internetconnection. Live view and cloud function so I can see and download everything on my phone. It works fine👌🏾

I'm in Denmark driving a 2021 C-Class, and my dashcam starts automatically, and it does loop recordings, and also automatically deletes older recordings when the USB Stick is full....

Just purchased a 2023 S580 in the US. Once I log-in with my fingerprint, the Dashcam automatically starts recording entire time driving in small time segments onto my external drive. I would like it if it would record when parked, but it doesn’t, especially in a parking lot when parked and someone gets close (Tesla does this really well). I have a 2 TB Disk connected in the center console to save recordings. Love your videos - interesting to see the difference in what UK allows and what US allows in terms of Lights, Recordings and other fascinating features.

I decided to add this to my new A250e as it was a simple solution and avoided having to stick something else on the screen and having to route power to it. I admit having to manually start it is a faff but the real pain is having to wait for the app to load which seems to take about 10 secs or more after pressing the start button. Bearing in mind the camera already exists I think MB are asking a lot of money for this. TBH I wouldn’t do it again, I’d go down the third party route.

This is no longer the case, I have the 2024 GLE 450 and the picture quality is brilliant, secondly my cam starts up the second the vehicle starts. The only way it doesnt is if you choose to do it manually or if you have a security code on your mbux system, after you enter the 4 digit code it unlock mbux and recording begin. I cannot express how clear and beautiful the play back footage is. I just input the usb-C in my cellphone and you access all recordings and you can just forward any of the incremental 2 min. slots to whatsapp and so on. I luv it, very pleased. Very much worth the $200 cost @ manufacture ordering point.
It must be different on a GLE vs an A-Class like my daily car. Good to know though!

One time purchase but I kept forgetting to turn it on so bought aftermarket automatic start much better quality recording and an App for instant download/viewing at a much cheaper price. Except for me as I bought both…..

I have a MBUX7 on my C Class. It’s great but so annoying having to manually set it to run every trip. I still forget to do it 50% of the time. With the Guard 360 it does the pictures when someone bumps into the car when Im away.
On my S580 it automatically does it for me. Look for a loop recording feature v
Sadly the auto start of recording is not allowed on all countries round the world it varies massively!

I have MBUX 7 on my s580 and it does it automatically each time. You have to set up a loop recording feature and it will do it automatically each time

UK is manual for some reason but in some other countries like the USA it has an auto start.

I purchased the Dashcam though digital extras and it allows auto start when you add a USB device for loop recrding. I don't need to switch it on everytime. The only annoying thing seems to be the Warning message regarding privacy in my region. but is goes away after 10 secs, Check it out when you try the new EQB = range.

Hi Nick. Nice video. I got the dashcamera NTG7 in my Glc 400e and in denmark it comes with autostart.😊I'm not impressed with the video quality in spite it's 1920x1280. It only capture with 25 frames/sec. and it's not enough when you freeze the picture on moving cars to see the numberplates properly.

To be fair - the quality aint bad - many dashcams have exactly the same imaging hardware (there are mebe 2 or 3 main mftrs?) - so this is 'par for course'. The main motivation for me is neatness - I really do not like the look of aftermarket stuff cluttering up my beautiful interior - and 10% off at the moment - so - I think I'll have it! I have an E 400 from 2022, with Augmented + 360 cameras, Dashcam License available but deactivated. Option available only on the System Menu of the MBUX , under the “Licenses” and not available on my MercedesMe as option to purchase.
I asked the MB dealer from where I bought the car to check and to activate it and he took almost a week to get an official statement from MB that this option is not possible to activate because in Germany is not allowed. Now I plan to revert to my Blackvue 4K as I found the Dashcam quite useful.
I wanted to avoid installing or adding any more wires, but this is it .. Resolution was anyway a joke 720p, I guess, is only ok to distinguish colors and shapes but true is better sometimes than nothing.

I really had the situation when the other guy in front of me revers his car while waiting at the red light and claim that I hit him from behind. Without having the Daschcam I would probably had to go in court and judge as it was my word against his. With the Dashcam, situation was solved in 15 mins, and the driver had to retract his words and admit his fault after seeing the video. Nevertheless by low, in Germany, these video evidences are not taken into consideration if go in court. So, I got lucky the guy acknowledge this fault after seeing the video. @@npoleary

Depends how long you wanted to record for, but to start I’d say anything 32GB and up would be okay. The higher the capacity the more it’ll store 🤓

I mean what the heck. anyway my mate had listened to me about the EQC Mercedes well, you won't believe it, he's just ordered one. my car is a 1.6 turbo wild horses 216 full tank distance just under 600 miles Kia not the plug in the other type. plus I'm getting extra kit you can't buy and that is the same foot steps you see on the EQC bottom of the doors I don't no what you call them car has a missive panoramic roof with 2 power blinds how about that left indicator camera comes on right indicator camera on turn off the car the power seat automatically alters into position to dump you out getting back in turn on power seat automatically goes back to driving mode all hands free nothing to touch. wait for it I'm coming to the best bit if the car is in a tight space example can't get the door open I hot a button on the remote and the car comes to me how cool is that ordered a white with full black top. drop dead gorges just like my X girlfriend this car was not on my shopping list at all getting it this May I can hear the spanners at work full name Sportage 1.6T GDi 212 HEV GT-Line S 5dr Auto AWD Hybrid Estate. full paddle shift there is a setting driving on sand. I don't think I'm going to the beach any time soon snow off road terrain etc etc

Don’t do what I done and use the top usb c port .. as when you close the draw back cover it will catch the sandisk and result in damage to both the cover and devise

Purchased a used 2023 GLA45 which has the dashcam hardware and NTG6. The Mercedes USA store no longer allows one to activate the dashcam for $200. They told me it has been discontinued. Understanding the limitations, I still wanted to have it, but there is nothing they can do about it.

Thank you! Some models can show the footage on screen where as some can’t, you have to watch on a PC or Laptop.
But I’m sure I saw something in the Dashcam menu called Gallery or something.
I had it on my 2020 e-class Cabriolet using NTG6. It wasn’t brilliant. It was functional but very grainy. The most annoying thing is that I spent £200 on it and I can’t transfer it to the SL that I have on order so I have to pay for it again which is why I’m considering buying a third-party Dash cam

The lack of an auto start would be a deal breaker for me. I invariably drive my C200 in eco mode, and it took me a long time (years!) to remember to switch it over when I set off. (And it passing it's a nuisance that you can't set the car to default to eco or whatever you prefer.)
Also, re cost, I assume it's an annual subscription like all the other Mercedes me add ons. You didn't mention how much it costs, but I bet it would quickly overtake the cost of a separate dash cam.

Yes it would be good if like my Dynamic Select would retain the settings but sadly it will always reset to the default driving profile which in Mercedes is Comfort.
Ah no it’s a one time purchase. Costs will most likely vary round the world, and if it changed in the future I would then have incorrect content on the video so decided not to draw too much attention to it. At the time I paid £200 which you can see on the screen at 20 seconds in.
I imagine getting into an accident knowing you spent the extra money for the dash cam yet forgot to switch it on at precisely the trip when you really needed it.

So in the video two videos (MBUX NTG 6 & NTG 7), I’ve covered everything there is to know about the Dashcam on Augmented Reality in Mercedes. Sadly there are no other features such as rear cameras because there isn’t one at the rear that’s suitable for capturing video like that.

Hi Nick. During the video you said the speed at the bottom of the screen could only be kph. Towards the end of the video it was showing mph. Personally, I prefer my Nextbase because it auto starts.
Ah that’s because MBUX NTG 6 is kph but MBUX NTG 7 is mph (basically different multimedia systems)
So it’s the correct speed unit for MBUX NTG 7
It would have been better, on a clip about the dashcam rather than the MBUX system, if there was more info about how to view the footage, both in and out of the car.
On this new dashcam version, unplug the memory stick from the car and plug into a computer 🤓
All the files will be there just like 3rd party dashcams, no codecs or conversions needed 👍🏼
To playback in the car just head to Dashcam app and you see them there 👍🏼
The dashcam isn’t being mounted anymore, at least not in the Netherlands. No dashcam, no augmented reality. Not available on any model

Hello Nick, since the Mercs has two cameras is there a way to record the rear camera footage simultaneously with the dash camera?
No sadly the rear camera is a reversing camera. It’s outside and is two low for dashcam footage.
Being outside it’s behind a cover to prevent it getting dirty all the time and it’s far too low, dashcams need to be eye level for example at the height of the rear window.

Hey Bob, thank you! Well each model in Mercedes is updated at different times, so for example the latest generation of MBUX I’ve seen is in an E-Class (it’s either MBUX NTG 8 or 7.5) or gen 3. Mercedes haven’t confirmed the name. These are not software updates though, there new generations of multimedia system, new hardware etc
But what orientation is the screen in your car? Is it landscape or portrait?

Regardless of which one you have though, still a cool car! I love the GLC Coupe’s as they have really curved roof but higher driving position.

Hey Nick. I’ve just purchased the dashcam function via Mercedes Me. I have a 2021 GLC running NTG6. I’m struggling to add the dash am as a favourite (for quick access from the * button) - I’ve tried 2 ways.. 1 - add new favourite. It doesn’t have “apps” in there. 2 - when in the dashcam app, I’ve tried holding down the record button to favourite, which looks like it should work, but I get an error saying “can’t do this function”
Any suggestions where I’m going wrong?
Really sorry I don’t have access to a car with MBUX NTG 6 right now unless it’s changed since I produced the video before. I thought I remember you can hold the Star button on the item, or go to favourites and add favourite at the end and add from there.

No worries! I’ve just wired it into the 12v socket for now. But when I review some 3rd party dashcams I will check out the different ways you can install one (warranties / ease of installation / 12v / USB’s etc)

Usually a cable of 4m to 5m but I’ve tucked it into the panels. You can see it in my A-Class Review when I got it back after repair 🤓

The March 24 A class brochure shows "MBUX Interior Assistant with 3D camera in the overhead control panel" but doesn't mention augmented reality. Does it still have the inbuilt dashcam?
You’ll have to check with Mercedes staff at a dealer for exact specifics. They’ll be able to let let you know for sure if a car has it or not 🤓

Should I insist for an updated spec sheet? Could it be that it should be on the car and actually not have it? Like a factory error? Does that ever happen? If it doesn't have it fine, but if it should and I'm paying for a car that should have it then I want it on there.
All car manufacturers change the specs several times throughout the year. I cover a few of them and they all do the same.
It depends on the brochure and when your car was built and of course the specs available at the time. Yes you can ask a dealer to help run through the spec of the car but I don’t believe they can give you a spec sheet as such. You’ll have to ask them 😎

Hi Nick, My Tesla, in Canada, records the cameras all around the car all the time, automatically. If I want to save a piece of footage, I just blow the horn. I wonder if Teslas in the UK do that automatically or are they manual start. Thinking of getting back into a 2024 GLC Coupe PHEV when they are released over here.
Ah nice! Yes I’ve heard Tesla’s can save footage from their 360° cameras (I think they’re mounted inside or at least behind glass/plastic to keep them clean). The horn auto save is a good idea!

So as you can leave comments you most likely (believe it or not) have a RUclips account where you can upload videos. You can upload onto there and leave the video as “Unlisted”. This means that anyone can view the video but only with the link you send them (for example your insurance company)
If you mark Private then only you will be able to see it.
There’s also a separate service called WeTransfer, the links expire within 7 days though so you could use that too. Both are free I should add!

@@npoleary Would be interesting to see you do this. I had one fitted but the quality and features were very disappointing considering it cost almost £800 including fitting. The cameras also need extra wiring looms that are extra as well.
Personally I think that all new vehicles should be fitted with front & rear 4k cameras by law & record whenever the ignition is switched on, also records to an internal hard drive that can't be removed or wiped, on a continuous loop recording that can be downloaded in the event of an accident or any other criminal activity by the owner of the vehicle or the police.

More laws urrggh but I do agree with on-board recording for cars. That sounds almost like a black box that’s found in planes. Records all of the info right up until the moment 👍🏼
@@npoleary A black box for cars, that's exactly what I meant, no more arguments about who falt an accident was as it will be all be recorded, no more speeding muppets putting other people's lives at risk because the evidence will be recorded, it should also bring down insurance premiums too. 360 remote viewing would be nice too, a bit like Tesla's sentry mode.
I just bought an a200l after the facelift. I see on the windshield something similar to what you show in the video. I seemingly have two lenses - the upper one for sign recognition and the lower one. However, there is no lens there but a cap (?). Is it possible that this is not installed and is there any chance that Mercedes can add it?
They’ll usually be two things at the top, one is a light and rain sensor and the other will be for brake assist or lane assist systems.
The very bottom part is for Augmented Reality which you must spec at factory, you wouldn’t be able to get it fitted afterward as sadly main Mercedes dealers will not and cannot “retrofit” things. They’re only allowed to sell cars as they’re described as per their spec sheets.
Bought a brand new 2023 AMG GT53 with augmented reality navigation features. Location was in WA, USA. BUT the dashcam is incompatible with my car and I couldn’t purchase it. 😢

It does vary round the world so isn’t available everywhere.

I believe so, as MBUX only recognises one USB at a time.
Thank goodness my 2023 C43 AMG automatically starts recording 360° when an “accident” is detected! I can activate it by rocking the car with my foot on the bumper. The car sends it right to my iPhone via MercedesMe. I’m wondering if the dash cam will do that without a memory stick too? Does anyone in the USA know?
No sadly this dashcam is only recording when pressed on the screen here in the UK

I have the same year A class as your self and had been assessing the option of triggering the inbuilt dash cam. However, after watching your review of the same, my mind is now made up. For £200, the purchase is poor value for money. Yes, there is no wiring, but apart from that, I see no other redeeming feature.
I passed my driving test in 1966 and to date (may come back to haunt me) have never had an occasion in which a dash cam would have benefited me. However, having an expensive car, using the dash cam as a level of security, protecting my car when it is parked, is ruled out with this system. In February 2020, some kind sole literally ripped one of my wing mirrors off. The collision report told me it had happened at 21:00, but no other info. Of course, it doesn’t give that protection.
As a matter interesting, my car ha little cameras in the wing mirrors. Would they be connected to the dash cam?

Sadly no 360° cameras are just parking cameras they don’t record. They’re located on the outside so wouldn’t be suitable, they’d get dirty from the road!

My new EQC premium plus doesn't have augmented sat nav and you can't get built in dash cam app which is pretty poor for an £81k vehicle
Just depends what you selected when you bought it (if it was from new).
Some cars have increased prices for other things, like being All-Electric (due to their battery and electric motors.) I’d love to go for one by the way, maybe my next car!
But of course specs change and vary over time, I do recall reading in the comments on my channel that it wasn’t available for a while due to the semiconductor shortage (thankfully that’s hopefully gone now!)
If you chat to Mercedes they can let you know if it’s back again if you decide to change.
I have an E53 coupe 2023, and the recording function does not reliably work when starting the car. Sometimes it takes a good 5 minutes for it to confirm its started recording. I've tried with different USB sticks (both USB A and C) but I get the same pattern of unreliability. Have you ever seen this or know if its a known issue? Otherwise I'll get MB to check it out.
No sadly not, it worked fine for me :(
It might not be this as you’ve tried another memory stick but make sure they’ve got good read/write speeds. It needs to be good to cope with the constant writing of data to the memory stick. I found this when I made a dashcam video a couple of years ago.
Maybe reach out to Mercedes and see what they say?
Hi Nick, Ive got the NTG6 on my S213 E53 and I’m using Loop Recording; however on some occasions it does not work at all even after 1 hour of driving, I get the message ‘Function Unavailable’. This still occurs even if I delete 90% of the footage from the USB !!
Have you tried formatting the memory stick / or the device you’re using to save the footage on?
I have to do this from time to time for my camera equipment and including my 3rd party dashcam.
Also check to make sure the memory stick / external storage has fast data transfer speeds.
@@npoleary Hi Nick, no I have not tried re-formatting the memory stick because it has my music in the 'Music' folder, SCDB Speed Cams in the "POI' folder and the MB Dashcam in the 'POI' folder all on the same stick. There is however, a good reason for putting everything on the same stick because when I bought the car I had my music and SCDB cams on one stick and the MB dashcam on a second stick. However, MBUX does not work correctly with two separate sticks and this is well documented by users on the MB Forums. Lots of guys are saying that the MBUX system is in need of a software update to address this issue.

Ah yes Mike that’s right MBUX from day one back 2018 will only ever recognise one memory stick.
It could be that you’re maxing out the read and write speeds on the memory stick. There’s 3 tasks going on there which might be a bit much for it. Sadly there’s no way to tell apart from if you experience issues like that.
Trust me I’ve been there before, been filming and taking photos etc and the camera caught up with the read and write speeds of the memory card and I thought it had recorded something but it hadn’t. As I was talking to camera I didn’t notice the error message.
I had to go and buy faster SD cards so there is a possibility that it could be that.
@@npoleary Many thanks for that very useful information Nick. I will buy a faster memory stick and it should be no problem to drag and drop the music and the SCDB speed cams to the new stick after formatting to Fat 32.
However, it would be great if MB could address the issue of recognising two memory sticks at some point.

I just bought the app, plugged a usb c card reader with a Sandisk SD card. But the app said usb storage not present.
Any idea if I should format the SD card? What file system?

Does the Sandisk stick need to be in the main USB C port in the front console or can you use any of the USB A ports inside the armrest console?

They’re all USB-C (unless it’s different round the world).
Just press Home and go to Apps and you’ll see Dashcam if the car has it or you’ve purchased it.
It depends how long you want to record for, I would say for 720p / 1080p footage a minimum of 32GB, ideally 64GB or higher to record at least a few hours / days with depending on your driving.
Thanks Nick, I was going to buy this features, but it seems the features stays with the vehicle and cannot be transfer to my future car, whereas a 3rd party device can.
I recently had a hit a run, my car alarm did not activate to alert me when I was in the house, I was quite surprise. I did however receive the collision prompt from Mercedes ME App, but its all too late as it didn't give me the opportunity to run out to see who was responsible for the hit and run.... I have enquired about this with the Mercedes customer service and still waiting for their response.
I remember with some of my previous and older/cheaper vehicles with an alarm system, car alarm would audibly sound/alert/activate, but why is my 2021 GLS does not activate the alarm??? Very surprise... I am now left in losing my NCB if I claim insurance because they are no responsible person for the collision.
Could you talk about this feature and let everyone knows about this basic features that don't work with Mercedes.... certainly with the GLS Mercedes flag ship vehicle.
Oh yes absolutely all Mercedes me Digital Extras stay with the car.
Oh no! Well I don’t know on cars what would trigger the alarm (in terms of the severity of a crash) it must have been very small or possible even slow that’s probably why the alarm didn’t trigger. A small bump might not do it. You’ll have to ask Mercedes when they get back to you.
Do you have any security cameras at home / doorbells / do your neighbours have any? I’m guessing you know the time so you can pin point roughly when it happened.

It depends on the specification, it’s an Augmented Reality Camera on most cars like mine but depending on availability and where you live you can upgrade it to a dashcam again like what I did.
This is only if you want to, check out the pros and cons and see if it’s worth it for you compared to a 3rd party one 🙏
