The movie’s sequel is playing out in real life, but instead of the stuff, it’s the covid vaccine. Everyone is going insane pressuring you to take it, disowning you if you don’t, everyone is obeying it like zombies, and people are dying from it but the media hides it. It was approved in a rush, just like the stuff, we know little about what’s in it, just like the stuff, there’s round the clock advertising pressuring you to try it.....just like the stuff.....

My older brother and I checked this out at a video store in the 80's. We watched it just to tear it apart.
Fun fact: this was a Disney Episode of "Quack Pack" as Donald's 3 nephews discover a green goo they call "Tasty Paste" that turns everyone into fat addicts.

I was only a child during the battle of Little Debbie. I still can't walk by the snack aisle at the grocery store without having flashbacks.
...they said we could just go home afterwards...but that was bullshit. The people threw confectionery sugar at us and called us twinki killers...I still wake up in the middle of the night and air smells of factory baked treats...the sounds of wrappers crinkling in the darkness...
I've seen attack cupcakes on fire off the boughs of the Keebler tree, i watched gouts of creamy filling oozing in the dark near the Nabisco gate, all these moments will be lost in time like icing in the rain.....

The kid's family in this actually look like they could all be related. They all have those really creepy bright almost grey, blue eyes and the Brother and Dad look a lot like him. Very good casting if they are not actually related.

It's funny how The Stuff has aged well, given how companies act today by just selling things and worrying about the consequences later (or down right ignoring them). Much like how Demolition Man has aged well given the attitudes of people today - those who are against all things 'negative' and those who enjoy everything, yet don't seem to get along.

Larry Cohen also was behind The Invaders and he paid tribute to the TV series by inserting a scene where Chocolate Chip Charlie suggested that they x-ray the Stuffies. This alluded to the fact that the aliens from the Invaders had an internal structure wholly different from humans. Mr. Cohen is definitely missed. RIP.

You won’t believe this, but there was a diet chocolate candy in the 70s and 80s that was called AYDS, But incidentally, they went out of business because it was easily compared to a debilitating disease that causes you to lose weight in voluntarily and kill you. The stuff was also referenced in the video game Grand Theft Auto Vice City on the talk radio station, referred to as Giggle Creme. Went to the Art Institute of Phoenix where what are my instructors had visual effects credits On both Creepshow and The Stuff. His name was David Stipes.

Great review that nails the premise: The Stuff is 50's sci-fi updated to the 80's with a satiric twist. Best line comes from Abe Vigoda in that TV commercial: "How's the food, sweetheart?" Only Vigoda could say that and make it convey "Choke on it and die, you old bag."

Haha. Seeing the Jussipussi made me laugh. I vaguely remember that bread bag from my youth. The bread itself was nothing special, just your garden variety slices of wheat bread that tasted rather bland. BTW I did get the joke and it's funny. Just to clarify, the Jussi in Jussipussi is a common Finnish name and "pussi" means bag, as in a plastic bag.

One of the rare instances where the video game scene was shot with complete authenticity. I think they actually took the time to ask people on set if anyone played them, and that kid actually happened to be a gamer. He even used a game with a long stretch of hands-off scenery so they could time it perfectly with the part of the scene where he had to look away and talk. I think this might actually be the only scene like that in film or television with complete realism and perfect cinematography. Kid wasn't even mashing, he was only pressing fire when necessary and landing every shot perfectly. Even if the footage was recorded and played back, that's still the only instance I've seen of properly acting out gameplay.
Zaxxon, now that's the stuff of legendary video games in the 80's.

I watched this in a drive in when I was 8 or 9 ... it was a foggy, wet and dark night and the wipers had to be on to see the screen - it was so perfect
13:00 That’s Clara Peller. She best known for uttering the catch phrase “Where’s the beef?” in Wendy’s commercials from the 1980s. The line became a huge cultural phenomenon for a time until Walter Mondale used it for his presidential campaign in 1984 and people lost interest in the catch phrase because of him. Leave it to politics to ruin pop culture! Also, Mondale lost to Ronald Regan.
Mondale's one of the few major party candidates that in the general election campaign told people they should pay more taxes, and you can see how well that went over. (It's popular to tell people that you'll raise other people's taxes, but tell them you'll raise theirs and good luck getting their vote; it's about the only political issue you can get almost the entire country to agree on all at once.)
I loved Homer Simpson's reaction to reading an old newspaper "'Where's the beef?' no wonder he won Minnesota!" (Mondale only won his home state of Minnesota and DC in the 1984 election, making Reagan's win one of the biggest landslide victories in U.S. history.)

At the college I went to, I saw mock-up posters for 'The Stuff,' in the art hall. The title and description blurbs were so generic, I just assumed it was a parody of B-movies being used to teach design students. Now that I know it's a real movie, I'd say it's 'The Blob' meets 'The Thing' meets 'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.'

First saw this movie when I was a kid. It was the scene you highlighted that freaked me out. It took 15 years to find the movie again so I could rewatch it and laugh hysterically at it and my 10 year old self for being afraid.

"The Stuff" might be my favorite of Larry Cohen films, though really "Q: The Winged Serpent" is probably a close if not equal. Michael Moriarty is just always so damn amazing in just about everything. He always has this oddly quirky, cavalier way of doing things that can both be humorous and intimidating, like you're never sure what he's thinking or if he's playing with you. This movie too, it's like half the time he's just fucking with the audience and it's amazing.
Did u know the actor who plays Jason and his real life older brother and is the voice of BJ in the newer Wolfenstein games and few more games...

13:51, that was pretty cool his they made that scene work. They built a tumbling room where the actors walk on a tilted set, lock down the camera, and roll the room around said camera. They did the exact same thing for The Fly.

A very interesting fact is that when Garrett morris plays the role of chocolate chip Charlie it’s he has limited times of being on screen but when Garrett plays the role he only appears on screen like two times for whatever reason even though Charlie never has any development in the film which he never grows as an actual main character but it’s kind of sad that he’s one of the characters that ends up getting killed at the end of the film
