Hi Ask GameDev. I made my own short puzzle game called A-Mazed! Sorry for the pun. I have used unreal engine to make this and i'm finally successful on my first game as a 10 year-old! Hope you like it: gamejolt.com/games/A-mazed/469386
Just make a crappy 2d game and some fetishist will back it. I noticed that first/third person games with average to good graphics always fail, while pixel cr@p (definition of bad graphics and dumb gameplay) always get successful. I guess it is due to demographics of people interested in backing. Certainly not young people who enjoy quality looking games but boomers and their obsession with retro.
@@brutal6129 Plus, FP and TP games are easier to make than pixel art games at this point, because of things like unity asset store. I don't see any pixel asset flips???
@@brutal6129 And saying that all pixel games are dumb that just means that you are very stupid, and all you do is play mainstream shooters like the CONSOOMER you are.
Btw you should probably include some failed crowdfunding, just to not have survivor bias with the advice Tips on what NOT to do are probably useful as well!
10:48 100% agreed! Physical rewards is a major headache, especially with postage/handling. I recommend digital rewards in game. That way; you can focus on your game.
I want more videos, guides and tips about kickstarter! About tiers, stretch goals, trailers, video making, daily updating information (gifs, pictures, devlogs etc). And as it was said, about failures and mistakes too. And thank your channel for your work! №1 channel in my indie gamedev list. :-)
Looking at successful campaigns is really insightful but I think it would be nice if we could look at promising but failed campaigns. After all most of us don't get to hear about them and the lessons from them are also important

@@brutal6129 Hoping you don’t think the same way you did three years ago, but if you do: The art style of a game certainly *does not* mean the graphics are bad, or that the gameplay is dumb. Nothing about pixel art is “bad quality”; artists put a lot of time and effort into their works regardless of their medium, and it’s certainly not just older people that have a fondness for retro-style games, either Just because an older generation of games’ art is defined by pixel art doesn’t mean a game is low-quality if released in pixel art nowadays, that’s a pretty ludicrous claim
Another great video! But may I suggest I series on the struggles of game development? A lot of devs (especially new ones, like myself) should be aware of the mental challenges that game development brings, and how to deal with them.
I'll be crowd funding my game. It's a deck building game unlike any that's been put together before. Tokens of Natura has octagon shaped creature and spells cards due to the mechanics of combat and strategy that takes place on the gameboard each turn. Additionally, there will be an extensive storyline behind the game too, so that if multiplayer battles and ranking isn't your thing, you can instead explore a campaign to soothe your need for the next complex journey you've been waiting to go on.
This video came in such a convenient time lol I'm not sure if there is new information for me at least here, but reinforcing these ideas are hella useful as well. Thanks!
Great video! I intend to make a campaign via kickstarter or indiegogo for my indie game, Leyria a JRPG for Sega Genesis / Mega Drive and Steam PC. I'm working on a demo that shows the full potential of the project ^^
Thanks for this awesome video. It's great to learn from the experience of other game developers / indie studios. I really hope that I can start a successful campaign some day...
Hoping to do a well done campain with our game, Marble Garden! We are running to the final stage at Nordic Game Discovery Contest this May representing Italy in Malmo, Sweden. So we are planning a kickstarter after that, in Q3 or Q4. Do you think that some Qs are better then others for start a crownfouding campain?
Marble Garden looks beautiful - great work, and good luck with the contest! We're not too sure if certain quarters are better than others, but we'll try to see if we can explore that for future episodes in this series.
11:45 "if you end at 3am you'll miss out" No matter what time you end it will be 3am somewhere in the world, not sure how you're supposed to avoid that.
great video as always...... so i am from Syria and i am working on a game alone and want you to recommend a publisher that is good and do not has a problem working with someone from Syria

Now we just need to hear some devs that had a very unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign and compare. (-> survivorship bias)
Good point! If there are any devs out there who've had unsuccessful campaigns and would like to share their experience, please reach out to us :)

@@brutal6129 Graphics. Don't. MATTER! And, imo, pixel art is beautiful. I guess the only thing to entertain you is to show you a pretty picture.

I'd be happier if that 3AM was in Africa/Asia time than being in the US/EU if that was my target audience.
Nice video !
Thank you Ask Gamedev!
only few countries are supported in making a campaign on Kickstarter and etc. sad :(
Wow! Alwa's Legacy looks pretty damn cool to an old buzzard like me
Thanks bro!
Very informative
My game will soon be on Kickstarter. Wish me luck.
