Top Five Worst Kickstarter Games

  • I remember donating towards a couple of games on Kickstarter ages ago and I can't remember what happened to them. Part of me wishes that I contributed to some of the games on this video just to be part of the history but the more I think about it, the more I reckon I'd rather have the money to spend on games that won't let me down. Like Resi 8, that one's got a tall lady in it.

    I think Kickstarter isn't a bad idea (See Undertale, Hollow Knight, etc.) but sometimes things happen behind the scenes that ruin things, like mismanagement, technical difficulties or personal stuff. Summary: no one sets out to make a bad game, but sometimes, life rips you a new one, and we shouldn't say Kickstarter is a bad site all around.

      Kickstarter is a pretty bad website all around though. Just because some good ideas are present doesn't mean the site is good.

      I think the problem is that the consumer is taking the place of the investor, but instead of profits you get the game. It's better to see it from that angle than as you buying the product:
      Think about all the games that get financed, developed and fall apart. For every AAA game that maked tons of money, you get things like Anthem that are a complete moneyhole. That's basically what things like Mighty No.9 are, a promising investment that went sour. Just on a way smaller scale than AAA.

    • @Waffletigercat

      Shovel Knight also ran out of funds, and the devs took out second mortgages on their houses to keep the project going. The real difference is a passion for what you're doing. • @gaspastrike
      @gaspastrike 3 года назад +14

      I don’t think they’ll be able to fully deliver. Right now, it’s 35 weeks total (Kickstarter), and it’ll probably reach a 10 week epilogue. That’s 45 weeks or 145 songs total. But then you have to factor in the playable characters (having to add 10 more playable characters) and that means that you’ll have to have a separate voice track for playing a song with every character. Counting BF as one, that’s 1,595 separate audio files. Jesus.
      Oh and it doesn’t stop there.
      With the erect difficulty, they’re going to remix every song. It’s given that they’ll probably re use the voices for these, but that’s still an extra 145 tracks. 145 + 1595 = 1740.
      I highly doubt they’ll be able to really do this. A small team like this. I hope it’s handled well but I predict it won’t be. And that’s not counting the mobile port, the custom character creator, the sharing network, and online multiplayer.

    btw Rabbidluigi, the protagonist of Mighty no. 9 made an appearance in another game. Mighty Gunvolt Burst, which takes him and Gunvolt (or GV as he's sometimes called) into a game about going through a VR world for some purpose. GV and that other guy (not sure if I remember his name right, as I thankfully did nothing with Mighty No. 9 beforehand) are not the only playable characters. If you transferred your save data from the demo, you have unlocked at the start Ekoro (I think her name was) from Japan's infamous weird shooter: Galgun. Not to mention there's so many DLC characters to purchase for a cheap price each. Every character has their own reasons and goals for why they are a part of that game. My theory is that Mighty Gunvolt Burst was created as an apology for people suffering and getting disappointed due to the failure of Mighty No. 9.

    The moral of some of these stories is that lofty ambitions need focus. You see it all the time in industries such as animated films and games: If you look at every great artistic and technical achievement in those industries you might notice that they usually seem to come one at a time. This is also why some smaller projects(i.e. Pixar short films) are made using new tech or techniques. That way, creators can see if something works well enough to be implemented into something bigger.

    So, this is an edit, and I stated that out of the 4 million dollars that Comcept only had 1.6 million to work with due to Kickstarter fees, but it looks like I fucked up. kirby1781 in the replies checked the video and confirmed I made a mistake. The pinned comment on Matt's video says there was an error on his end about the cut taken from Kickstarter, and, according to someone that told kirby1781, the actual cut may be either 5-10% or 30-35%.
    Doing the math, that means the cut potentially taken by Kickstarter could result in the amount remaining being anywhere from 2.47 million dollars to 3.61 million dollars, going by the rough amount being 3.8 million without rounding it to the nearest million. Matt also doesn't say what the actual amount remaining was, so we've only got the alleged cuts mentioned to go by, for now.

    I'd argue that Yogventures should be #1. I've heard the full story of that game from DJ Slopes, who specializes in Kickstarters that wound up failing or even outright being a scam (Kickscammers as he calls it), and it was a mess to say the least. There are some real horror stories out there that frankly, even Mighty No. 9 looks good by comparison because it at least delivered even if it wasn't good.
    I've backed a number of Kickstarters and they've mostly been successful. A few have been late, which is understandable, but only one has really done a runner on me (I hope). Yes, there are horror stories out there, but that doesn't reflect badly on the site itself.
