Los Angeles California is geographically known for it's many landmarks, like the Hollywood sign, Hollywood's Walk of Fame, Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Brown Derby, Griffith Observatory, Griffith Park, Dodger Stadium, and the great CitiGroup Center building in Downtown Los Angeles, which is a setting for the most talked about law firm drama on Television. This is "LA LAW"!
The show is about a team of attorneys and a staff of supporters working at 'McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney and Kuzak', located in a fictional center building (444 Flower Building), starring an ensemble cast of characters.
Five years after starring in M-G-M's 1981 feature "CLASH OF THE TITANS", Harry Hamlin appeared as Attorney Michael Kuzak. Attorney Grace Van Owen is played by Susan Dey, former face of the early 1970s series "THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY". Corbin Bernsen portrays Partner Arne Becker, Partner/Associate Ann Kelsey is performed by Jill Elkenberry, Alan Rachins portrays Managing Partner Douglas Brackman, Jr., the role of Associate Abby Perkins is performed by Michelle Greene, Jimmy Smits is Associate Victor Sifuentes, playing Asdociate/Partner Stuart Markowitz is Michael Tucker, Susan Rutan plays Secretary Roxanne Merman, and rounding out the cast as Senior Partner Leland McKenzie is Richard Dysart.
The opening title sequence starts each episode of the show, and it started with a close-up look of a car trunk being slamed shut revealing a personalized California license plate with the show's title on it that reads "LA LAW". The little registration sticker on the upper left side of that plate indicates a year in which every particular season starts.
"LA LAW" is Created by Steven Bochco and Terry Louise Fisher.
When the show premiered on NBC September 15th, 1986, it became an instant hit, and it fills the 10:00 PM Eastern Standard Time slot as a great fixture to end NBC's entire Thursday Night lineup in which it's Television Network Executive Brandon Tartikoff calls, Must-See-Television, also known as The Best Night of Television on Television.
Starting it's second season in 1987, it's ensemble was joined in by it's new member, when Blair Underwood appears as Associate/Partner Jonathan Rollins. Throughout it's run, the show has many changes for the cast, like the appearance of Office Messenger Benny Stulwicz played by Larry Drake. Next was Sheila Kelley playing Secretary/Law Intern Gwen Taylor, and Associate C. J. Lamb is by Amanda Donohue.
Midway into it's fourth season, the show entered the dawn of the 1990s, and new to the show in it's fifth season is John Spencer as Associate/Assistant District Attorney Tommy Mullaney. Later in that season of the show was Assistant District Attorney Zoey Clemmons played by Cecil Hoffman.
In 1991 after five seasons, Harry Hamlin, Michelle Greene and Jimmy Smits left "LA LAW", and the following year in 1992, Susan Dey was dismissed from the show after six seasons, and a year later in 1993, Susan Rutan said Good-bye to the show after seven seasons. Corbin Bernsen, Jill Elkenberry, Alan Rachins, Michael Tucker and Richard Dysart are the only five people who stayed throughout this entire eight year run of the series.
A few more players appeared in the show, included in it's season six, Michael Cumpsty as Tennant Frank Kittridge, and as Tennant Susan Bloom is Conchata Ferrell. In the show's season seven, A Martinez starred as Partner Daniel Morales, along with Associate Melina Paros played by Lisa Zane. For the shows eighth and final season, Alan Rosenberg was on board as Partner Eli Levinson, Secretary Denise Iannello is played by Debi Mazar, and Alexandra Powers portrayed Associate Jane Halliday.
Steven Bochco is Executive Producer for the show's seasons one, two, three and six. Terry Louise Fisher is Co-Executive Producer for the show's debut season. Executive Producer for the show's fourth and fifth seasons is David E. Kelley. Rick Wallace is Executive Producer for the show's fifth, sixth and seventh seasons. For the show's sixth season, Patricia Green is the Executive Producer. The two Johns, John Tinker and John Masius are Executive Producers for the show's seventh season, and the Executive Producer for the show's last two seasons is William M. Finkelstein.
"LA LAW" has had a historic eight season run on NBC, and on May 19th, 1994, the show closes it's case, as the long-running Television law firm drama of all time.
"LA LAW" (seasons one through six) is a production of Twentieth Century-Fox Television.
"LA LAW" (seasons seven and eight) is a production of Twentieth Television.
The show lasted over 172 episodes, and won 15 PrimeTime Emmy Awards including 4 for Outstanding Drama Series (1987, 1989, 1990, 1991) and 5 Golden Globe Awards for each season.
Music and Theme for the show was by Mike Post.
In the spring of 2002, just 8 years after the show's finale, the ensemble cast of "LA LAW", Harry Hamlin, Susan Dey, Corbin Bernsen, Jill Elkenberry, Alan Rachins, Michelle Greene, Michael Tucker, Susan Rutan, Larry Drake and Richard Dysart return to their iconic roles for a special reunion movie on NBC. "LA LAW: THE MOVIE" aired May 12th, 2002. The film saw Michael Kusak returning to the law firm to stop the impending execution of former clients.
"LA LAW" continued on in syndication today, and serves as an instant phenomenon, and it is the best thing that happened between the late mid 1980s and early mid 1990s. As a New York Attorney stated, 'Any lawyer who doesn't watch "LA LAW" the night before he's going to trial is a fool!'.
