Hey, video games! Dark Souls Clones are done? What are some cool DS Clones I missed?
Also, to the guys who ask me about the Sonic Adventure Clone video.
It's coming, I promise.
Austin Eruption Google Stadia is the Dark souls of streaming! Challenging and rewarding when it works... In 10 years 👍
Salt and Sanctuary is a fun 2D Soulslike.
I can't wait for the list of Sonic Adventures clones.
singularon1 which are?
I'm surprised you didn't talk about Ashen. its on the EGS but its one of the good DS clones!
I feel if i sleep I'll see a Raid Shadow Legend promotion

Ah, so it's just like Google
You just took the words right out of my mouth!
Inferno Climber looks like a fake game that a character in an anime would be playing
So creo is basically “my nukes heal the earth for negative damage
Basically yes. They were using experimental chemicals to attempt to fix the damage to the environment, found out that the missiles were a short term solution with some real bad long term effects, and then switched to using nanotech to solve the problem, but that lead to even worse problems(and is the reason why the robots have gone rogue and there be cyberzombies running around).
Fat man nukes but it's filled with stimpaks
Captain Plague barbed arrows of healing
It's like the reverse version of a Final Fantasy damaging cure spell glitch. I'd call them terraformers.
Publisher of Neverinth here: Thanks for mentioning us and be sure to check out the update and new character :)
How do you feel about getting called a “Dark Souls Clone”?
Your game has a lot if promise. Like the character designs and combo speed. Just keep polishing it!
Neverinth you guys are weeb trash shit fuck.
I wanna see the eventual finished release. It looks pretty good and has potential. Same with Bloody Spele. The latter has a lot of staples of Early Access trash mixed with decent gameplay. Kinda jarring.
@@godsstrongestschizo there are a shit ton of fighting games but no one calls them street fighter or virtua fighter clones.

@@Calvados656 As awesome as that sounds on paper, that's not a good business decision, and would likely lead to extreme burnout of ideas for the IP.
Much as I'm desperate for a new AC, them trying something new and making it big with the Souls formula was a very good thing. FromSoft is now on the radar and will get attention for any game they make. I just hope they use that momentum for AC while they still have it...

Yeah...crank up the difficulty setting on the original Halo, and you're in for a pretty big challenge. As for regenerating health, it has been around as far back as the NES days, but Halo certainly popularized the mechanic for the FPS genre.

Sad that Salt and Sanctuary doesn't get a mention. It's very much in line with the themes of DS while still bringing its own unique bits to the table. There's a reason I have like 10 save files on it between 3 consoles.
Perhaps he might do a separate video on the 2D clones later on? There are at least 8 of them at this point.
Breath of wild durability in Dark Souls?
You mean pre-patch Dark Souls 2?
Omg. What was it like before the patch?? I didn't think it could be worse
Yeah. Especially when your weapon hit a wall on the PC version. It took away like 4× the weapon durability. It made it so basically any weapon with a wide swing was unviable for PvE. That's not even accounting for how it might have effected weapon on armor vs weapon on flesh durability damage!
@@ripples1072 Spears where literally non-viable, as they broke too fast.
@@lenlimbo how did a whole team of people sign off on that decision....
@@ripples1072 IIRC it was a framerate problem, like it counted down durability based on how many frames the weapon was in contact with something and worked on the consoles at ~30fps, but then on PC at 60fps it would count twice the frames or more and would hit your durability accordingly
I think the term ''Soulslike'' only exists because ''Action Adventure'' sounds About as Epic as going to the store to buy milk and realizing they dont have the low-fat milk that you like anymore.

@@CricketStyleJ There were maaany things I hated more than the food. At least that had a satisfying jingle.
@@KhaosKontroller Yeah, I think I'm in the minority with that opinion. The biggest reason I don't like it is that it makes the late game too easy. I like how everyone acts like Ninja Gaiden doesnt exist for difficulty as if DS defined it all.
Comparing ninja gaiden to dark souls is like comparing gouda and swiss cheese, one has noticeable holes in it.
Different Difficulties...
"Dark Souls Targeting"
I remember when it was called Z-targeting, or zelda-style targeting.
Also, I mildly enjoyed Immortal Unchained, and am still looking forward to Hellpoint since I love the demon-slaughtering semi-gothic sci-fi aesthetic.
Oh, and of course we can't ignore the spectacular Remnant from the Ashes.
I may look back into that Necropolis one, though, since it's got some pure Roguelike functions (like randomized potions).
This is really the dark souls of dark souls clone videos
Being hard is not a genre. I am not saying that Souls gameplay isn't it's own genre, just saying you can't take souls-like onto something just because its hard.
You literally can and it works just fine. Saying something is the "Dark Souls" of its genre just tells how difficult it is in comparison to other games within the same genre. Compared to God of War or Castlevania Lord of Shadows, Devil May Cry 3 is much harder and could therefore be called the Dark Souls of hack and slash games. Compared to easier games to jump into like Call of Duty or Battlefield, Rainbow 6 is the Dark Souls of multiplayer shooters.
You may get tired of hearing the same thing, but it works perfectly well and makes perfect sense.
Soulslike games are more than just hard gsmed. They usually copy the combat systems too.
Dark souls is the battle Toads of 3rd person action games.
@@RobertHeadley that works perfectly. I don't see why you guys don't understand how qualities can be shared by entities that vary wildly. Have you ever heard the phrase "Women age like milk, men age like fine wine."? It's the same thing.

that achievement system in Neverinth reminds me of Baroque. the game would probably be right up your alley.

Salt & Sanctuary is soooo 2D Dark Souls. And a good game. My only issue with it is fall damage, but Souls has that, too.
That 5 second end improv song was OUTSTANDING.
Salt(y) and Sancturary is probably my favorite.
I actually liked it more than DS3.
I was hoping he would mention it so badly. I don't understand why people seem to sleep on Salt and Sanctuary so much. It's a pretty solid Souls-like game that needs far more recognition than it gets.
why? imo ds3 is VASTLY superior to ds1(to such a degree that going back to ds1 is torturous and boring), let alone salt and sanctuary. also, while not really a souls-like, hollow knight is a far better game than salt and sanc tbh. i liked salt and sanc, but dont love it as much. i can see why it isnt that known or liked in both the souls or metroidvania community, it isnt a bad game by any means.
@@TwilightTheCabbit seriously! Now that its on the Switch, more people need to try it out. Especially since its got awesome couch co-op.
@@pockystyx4087 Indeed. I haven't been able to get into the Souls series... not that I don't want to. I would LOVE to get into those games. But I feel like Salt and Sanctuary is a pretty good gateway into the series. It's easier... not by a ton since it's still... quite hard. Especially if you decide to play new game+. But it definitely deserves more recognition.
My first exposure to it was when a friend of mine was streaming it and asked if I wanted to join in. It wasn't playable online, which we found out the hard way, however... there is a program that can be downloaded to make couch multiplayer games be played online. It basically makes the game THINK that there are multiple people playing via the same software/hardware. I found out that way just how fun the game was and decided to buy it for myself and beat the entire thing in about a week.

Severance Blade of Darkness: Original eh? I think you're forgetting something boy.....
What does Severance have before Dark Souls?
salt and sanctuary is most obvious dark souls clone and of course Nioh. Wich was my game of the year
Ever heard of Void Memory? Probably not, because it's not good, but when it comes to 2D games, you really can't get any more blatant rip-off than that.
When it comes to 2D games, there's also Death's Gambit, which had the highest production values of all 2D DS-likes, but over-exerted itself and is terribly uneven as a result. There's Dark Devotion, which is also close, and would have been great if it didn't arbirtrarily limit exploration. There was a weird top-down game called DarkMaus, where, as you can guess from the name, everyone is a mouse. There's yet-to-be-released Blasphemous, and last year's black-and-white Unworthy: I mention them together because they essentially have exactly the same story.
There are also two 2D games which are more like Bloodborne clones: Shrouded in Sanity, which is top-down and free, and Gloom, which is sideview, black-and-white, a roguelike inspired by TBOI, yet arguably has a more detailed story than some of the actual Souls games.
I am a FAN of Inferno Climber. I pushed myself to the limits to see more and more of it. Years later, still couldn't finish it. But one day. One day.
I'm gonna buy Inferno Climber: Reborn and get the platinum trophy on it just to spite you.
Edit: Wait a minute, it's not on the Playstation store. How do I get it?
Edit 2: I don't think it's available in my country.
Demon Souls released in 2009? I was 12 years old playing this game??? I coulda sworn I was older when this game dropped lol. It doesn't even feel like its been that long but I'm a full grown adult now. Time passes by crazy fast. Loved it though, replayed it until I got to NG+6 haha.
One of my favorite souls clones is a game called "SINNER". Its extremely short and the only enemies for the most part are the bosses, but it was still pretty fun.
Salt and Sanctuary is an unapologetic Souls rip off or homage? Either way...that should be on your list. 1
At this point, there can be a separate video just for all the 2D games that rip-off/pay homage to Dark Souls/Bloodborne. I know of 8 at this point, with a ninth one to be released this year.
in an alternate universe, The Surge got smashed together with Edge of Tomorrow, and something awesome came out
It makes me a little sad you didn't talk about Death's Gambit though you showed it twice. Like it probably has the best twist on the death mechanic. With different healing types that affect stats differently and losing one of your healing charges on death makes the game super compelling. The world is also rather interesting.

How many of the 2D ones can you name? I can name 4-8 (depends on whether you count two that are closer to Bloodborne, and one that's not yet released.)
@@azurebookllet9216 I'm only familiar with S&S.
@@smergthedargon8974 All right, here's a list I commented under a couple of other threads here:
* Salt and Sanctuary itself, 2014
* DarkMaus (2016; top-down, everyone is a mouse, don't know much else about it)
* Shrouded in Sanity (2016; has a free version, top-down, more Bloodborne-style with revolvers and Lovecraft influences, has two sequels that shifted genre);
* Void Memory (2016; sideview, possibly RPGMaker, really blatant clone and mostly bad besides a few cool boss fights)
* Gloom (2017; sideview, roguelike, black-and-white, great OST, poor animations/AI, but possibly has the best story out of all these games and the coolest final boss)
* Unworthy (2018; sideview, black-and-white, may have the best enemies and Metroidvania progression, but also the most minimal story and the worst final boss)
* Death's Gambit (2018; Adult Swim, so has full voice acting and generally high production values, but can be unbalanced in gameply and very uneven in story)
* Dark Devotion (2019; third-largest after DG and S & S with ~20 bosses, but has balance issues and is lacking in exploration)
* Blasphemous (coming out this year, has the same premise as Unworthy, looks more colorful but seems to have worse gameplay to my eyes)
EDIT: I forgot that there also was DarkMaus in 2016. It was top-down, and I don't think it was very good once you get past the novelty of its concept, but, yeah.
@@azurebookllet9216 I've cleared SnS, DarkMaus, and Unworthy.
DarkMaus is similar to Unworthy in that it's a more arcade-y "2D souls" than SnS, with relatively short campaign. Although IMO DarkMaus has slightly better progression system. It has stat allocation, variety of weapons, and has spells, so you can have builds unlike in Unworthy. Where Unworthy excels in platforming puzzle, DarkMaus excels in enemy placement. The mouse can't see behind walls, so late in game you must always be on your toes for enemy ambush and traps. Unlike in Unworthy where you are expected to dodge every danger, DarkMaus expects you to use your stamina to block, dodge, and position yourself smartly (like in the 3D soulsborne games) because you can easily be swarmed by enemies and traps.
Unworthy has better variety of art asset though. More background variety, better storytelling, and unique music for every boss.
@@ksm_ngr Thanks for that explatation!
Just saw some videos of DarkMaus, and it certainly looks cool for what it is (and better than the other top-down game I mentioned, Shrouded in Sanity), even if the overall art variety is more limited that Unworthy's. They both have different strengths due to their pesrpectives: Unworthy can do multiple backgrounds and foregrounds, which looks really cool and reminded me of how Darkest Dungeon did it at times, while DarkMaus has its dynamic lightning and shadows.
Unworthy has better boss music as you mentioned, and a couple of its bosses are straight-up superior: Gaston the archer is one of the coolest bosses in all Souls-style games, imo, Dancer's hallucinogenic distortion is really creepy, and Dominic is also really strong with his two themes and transformation (it's a bit of a generic idea, but is still cool.) DarkMaus could have made its twin boss fight into their equivalent to O & S, but it missed that opportunity.
However, it is cool that all its bosses have stamina bars and so fighting them is more of a duel, so I say they are still matched well enough with the Unworthy's bosses outside of the three I mentioned. Fighting normal enemies seems more a duel too because of their stamina bars, while Unworthy's enemies are more about pulling off cool special moves to even the playing field (that laser blast from the cage-headed enemies.)
In all, both seem pretty good, though both could have had that final push to make them great.
I don't know why, but I get a Ray William Johnson vibe from him

No mention of Salt and Sanctuary? It's Dark Souls in 2D.
It's not a clone. The switch to 2D changes not just how you'll play but the combats pacing and structure. He went for straight clones of the 3D Animation Priority/Stamina Management gameplay.
@@blurgalsklech2929 Stamina management is in Salt and Sanctuary plus you collect salt the same way you collect souls and lose said salt if you die. @@zelatoth No I'm saying this is his video and you really should use his definition. You posited that he wasn't recognizing Salt as a DS Clone. That's because he made the arbitrary decision to focus on the games that look like they took DS's engine, copied and pasted it into their own game. Salt took the system of DS but it clearly didn't clone the engine. By Austin's definition he was looking at the straight pure clones, in 3D like Souls. Salt didn't clone, it recreated the Souls experience in a 2D Metroidvania.
We can't really have a dialectic here unless we share the same definition. I'm posting to try and convey what the video was doing and why Salt, my favorite Soulslike, was not in his list. Not to mention he goes through bad to mediocre games as a norm. Salt is probably too good for his radar.
