Supposidely, Pokemon Battle Revolution was going to have a single player portion like Colosseum and Gale of Darkness and much more content, as well as a full rentable roster of the 493 critters just like Stadium 1 & 2 did, but were told to scrap most of those features to reach somewhere close to the launch window of the Diamond and Pearl games. Such is life. The Pokewheel keeps on turning, even at the detriment to some of its other properties.

There is a huge reason why Phantasy Star 3 is a black sheep. It was developed by an entirely different team of devs just brought in to quickly hammer out the project in 6 months, with just the same producer/director as before. It was originally a bunch of mini stories that they strung together into a narrative..
I actually enjoy Phantasy Star III here, the narrative stories actually do flow well considering the game takes place over the course of three generations. Sure, the battle system should've been overhauled but I can forgive that. It was a solid game, and one with a unique take on the franchise.
@@marbles8641 Poison basically doesn't let you heal back your character, if you use a healing item it gets consumed and if you rest at the "save point" you don't get healed either. To cure poison you must use an antidote or by going into hospital (which forces you to go back to any nearby town). Also I liked PSIII better than PS II, it had better spritework and art direction and basically connects all Classic Phantasy Star games togheter.
In my opinion, Nintendo’s spin off games got worse after they took single player story modes out of them. Golf, Tennis, Pokémon apparently, they all got worse after they scrapped it.
@@unknownuser494 The tingle games are not comparable to what I was talking about, I don’t know why you brought them up. There hasn’t been a tingle game in 10 year and they were always single player.
Rieko Kodama who directed Phantasy Star IV has said she has a story treatment written for Phantasy Star V. Yet Sega won't give her a team to make it happen.
Why this is, is beyond me. Phantasy Star IV was and is an amazing game. Hell, I also enjoyed Phantasy Star III, and I feel that game also deserves a remake.
@@DesertRainReads Phantasy Star III suffers from being way too ambious, short development time and being developed by the Golden Axe team who had never made an RPG before and having only one person from the PS2 team on it. If there was character dialogue then it could've been different but yeah lol. And yuuuup, dunno why Sega isn't greenlighting Phantasy Star V. It doesn't even need to be an expensive product, it could be done in pixel art to retain the 'classic' feel.
I’d like PSIV much more if Chaz wasn’t such a repulsive dullard. If only he had died instead of Alys. In any case PSO and it’s descendants far eclipsed the original series and that story was done in any case.
If I had to guess what you meant by LP3 lacking the "YEEHAW" of the first game: I distinctly remember LP2's grappling hook letting me get all over the map quick and easy while shooting wildly in the air like I was a Spider-man with a gun
Glad to see I wasn’t the only one! I played the heck out of BR back in the day and loved it, but that’s also because I bought it AFTER finishing Diamond and had learned from a friend that the game was compatible. Diamond was also my first Pokémon game, so it was really exciting for me that there was a game that could test my champion team even further.
i think the craziest thing about Death By Degrees is if you only saw gameplay snippets you would think its a slightly globe trotty game. only to see that the whole game takes place on a ridiculously furnished cruise ship.
Yup. Battle Revolution was the main example of how lazy Sword/Shield animations were. Battle Revolution was on the Wii. Meaning the Switch a stronger console should be able to have battle animations to this level.
@@shinon748 yeah but realistically the developers aren’t given enough time in the development cycles to do this. I mean the new game even looks like it can barley run at 20 frames.. they don’t go all out with budget or time because they don’t have too
@@shinon748 thing about battle revolution is that those animations are pretty much all there is to the game given that it has no overworld, no real gameplay loop, and not even all the Pokemon exist in-game
I loved Battle Revolution as a kid but I can attribute that to already owning the required DS counterpart and the fact that I hadn’t played either Stadium or Colosseum so I had a fun time with it. I totally get why it’s considered a disappointment though
So Death by Degrees DID have a very early example of x-ray attacks in games, but there's one that came earlier, one that people forget, largely because everyone forgets about the game Fight Club on the PS2, which came out a scant 3 months earlier
i could see that, monster hunter in space with guns and giant mechs. just hoping its better than the dino crisis that was basically that, but with space zombie dinos and without the mechs... also sucking ass.
I'll fight you Austin, Til the end of time is genuinely a great star ocean game and the last good one, hilariously goofy voice acting included It kept to the spirit of the first two games
As a fellow Digimon fan, I can't even describe how exciting Digimon Survive is! Really hope you end up covering it, especially since it will be completely looked over thanks to Xenoblade Chronicles 3 releasing the same day.
I think the modern Digimon games have been amazing. Digimon World Re: Digitized (Even though it's only accessible via emulation in english, it is the highest regarded game in the World series by fans), Digimon World Next Order, Digimon Story cyber Sleuth, etc.
Survive is actually coming out? I thought it was never actually going to release lol Never played a Xenoblade game so I don't care about 3 but I love Digimon and Digimon games.
More people need to know how awesome SOME Digimon games are. Rumble Arena 2 is a game that can only be described as "so broken it turns the needle back into being balanced again" except for Diaboromon that fucker has a spammable ranged attack that can cover a solid 1/4 of the entire stage.
Digimon has just quietly been popping out bangers in the background for a long time now. While its "rivals" Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh are basically rehashing the same stuff over-and-over Digimon has been tackling basically every genre they can think of. And most of them wind up being excellent. It's a damn shame they're basically unknown to the wider gaming community because they're exactly what many Pokemon fans want, the old content with updated mechanics and a more mature tone.
@@Goldenkitten1 I definitely agree that the Digimon series has always tried new and interesting concepts for their games, even since the beginning. DW1: monster raising DW2: mystery dungeon DW3: Virtual reality/amazing sprite work DW4: 3D beat em up I could go on and on and on lol, but I won't. Although I'll skip straight to where we are currently. A tactics game, which is completely new for the series as well. I'm hoping the visual novel aspect of the game isn't turning anyone away. It's so deep and I'm loving the dynamic between all the characters.
Oh boy, a new Austin Eruption video!Proceeds to remind me that Zone of the Enders, Bloody Roar, and Lost Planet are all dead. Austin why must you do this to me, I came here to laugh, not feel pain.
4 definitely should've been done better though, 5 redeemed 4's faults, and I loved 3. As for Eiyuden Chronicle? Oh lord, I really hope that one gets a physical release, at least on the Switch. I want it. Looks like it could scratch that itch, just like how Bloostained: Ritual of the Night scratched that Metroidvania itch for millions. Such a good game!
@@DesertRainReads I know those of us who did the kickstarter will get physical editions depending on our tier, but sadly unsure outside of that. Switch is getting it as well now though.
I actually had the full suite required for Battle Revolution and was still disappointed lol. I did play a lot of it but mostly because all the bells and whistles are just oh so nice. The graphics were rather nice, having gen 4 mons in 3D was cool, but my god how did you not mention the announcer?!? He went way hard as he was essentially Stadium’s announcer turned up to 11. VGC would be a lot more fun with him around. Would even fit SwSh’s whole deal too! Also My Pokemon Ranch was fun to just have running in the background while doing other things. It was cute seeing the Pokemon interact. That’s really it. Honestly having that while slapping on a custom room and social media aspects would have made Home worth $5 but apparently even that is too much for GF these days
Once a month I need to take my immunsopresants for my arthritis. The needle for it is suuuper painful so I usually just sit with it by my leg for like 25 minutes anticipating the pain. So I usually look for a video around that length that’s chill so I can try to distract myself from it. Has nothing to do with video games, but this came right place at the right time. Thanks, Austin. Merci, Toda, Shookran, gracias.
Wait he did? *gets pitchfork Til the end of time is one of the best games I played. I played it last year or whenever I was off for covid shut down and played it first time since PS2 and that game aged wonderfully. The twist? Yeah cause that takes away the fact it's still a living breathing world. And was fun for dozens of hours. But damn the game is tough I'll say that
I legitimately would be intrigued to hear more specifically why he dislikes SOTET. I remember thoroughly enjoying it when I played it. More than when I played Last Hope (though I did enjoy that one as well) or Integrity and Faithlessness. Even when I was going back to it and playing it again years after, I still found it enjoyable.
17:45 man it feels so weird to finally having one of these obscure games that appear on these kind of videos, I always feel like creators just made the up or sum, but I got that game just because of its double disc case, I bought DMC 2 in a store but it didn't had its case so the owner took this game of a pile labeled "bad games" and I asked him, "bad because the discs are broken, or they're just terrible?" And he replied, "yes". Took it home got happy happy when both the game and demo worked, then got disappointed when I realized of the quality of their respective contents, eventually got an old beaten up double disc case for it and have in the colllection, well, since I really dig characters like Samus, Sarah Bryant and Rachel from NG/DOA, guess I have a thing for tall, blonde and gorgeous kickass women, just saying.
Well, glad you like Strider. That was a labor of love on my part and I had to fight executive-fuckery on all sides to get it where it got to, with 24 people over 14 months. I think had I done a sequel and said executives were locked completely out, that would've been even better, but alas...
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero comes to mind as a bad spin-off/sequel. Chibi-Robo Ziplash is an abomination with one of the best licenses slapped on it. Ecco Jr. is a game I ironically enjoy, but a children's game, some of the missions taking less then 30 seconds, was a weird direction to take the series. Also the Phantasy Star 3 Rom Hack "General Improvement" made me like the game more.
at least Chibi-Robo Ziplash is better than Chibi-Robo Photo Finder! oh GAWD did that game sucked I'd take Ziplash over Photo Finder any day, even if the former is bad
@@LieseFury Park Patrol is fine, but the Japanese only sequel Clean Sweep is a direct sequel to the first. There is an English patch if you are interested.
I actually liked death by degrees growing up. I just dont understand why tekken didnt follow up on their adventure modes they had in a couple of their titles you ran around in and still had tekken combat
I get why Till the End of Time was... divisive... when it came out, but I think it's fair to say that whether you loved it or hated it, the series has definitely hit deeper depths since.
I don't think I will ever fully understand why some people don't like Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. Yes, I get the big twist isn't for everyone, but I think it is a neat and thought-provoking idea that is executed pretty well. Meanwhile, the art design (especially on the final dungeon) is some of the most beautiful I've ever seen in a game. It is, unironically, my favorite game in the franchise.
Diamond & Pearl were the first Pokemon games to have Nintendo Wi-Fi connection actually, and they were also one of the first ever games to implement working voice chat, so no PBR wasn't the first Pokemon game with internet connectivity.
18:35 Wowww, the only other game I knew where they went with the idea of flicking the control stick for attacks (well just the right control stick) was one of my favorite PS2 games, Jet LI Rise to Honor. Funny enough also had camera problems.. but at least it stayed a beat-em-up from start to finish xd
Small correction that changes nothing: you could also get all the Pokemon Battle Revolution content access with Platinum, HeartGold, and SouldSilver, not just Pearl and Diamond. Alright, that's all I wanted to say, all other points you made about the game are spot on.
When you mentioned the Pokemon franchise, for a hot bit there I thought that you might talk about Pokemon Dash. Because that certainly is a game... That exists... And is not particularly good. But I never realized that Battle Revolution was as THAT much of a disappointment! Shame, really. Colosseum and XD are a lot of fun! If incredibly edgy. Also that pre-battle music from Phantasy Star 3... I owned the GBA port as a kid, and even though I never got very far in any of those game, that song just reactivated some kind of deep-seated and forgotten emotion within me. What that emotion is on the other hand is not known even to me. O.O
Pokémon Dash is more like a retail DS tech demo, or might have been DSiWare if it released in the era of the DSi than at the start of the DS’s lifespan.
Philips made those Nintendo games because Nintendo was desperate to make a CD based console but no longer wanted to work with Sony due to the fact that they would own all the CD based games. I guess Philips required Nintendo to license their characters in order for them to work with them.
I miss Lost Planet 2, it had one of (if not the best) Turret Levels, the Giant Sandworm fight on the Dreadnought cannon Train. Loading Ammo (and empowering if you took a extra second) Aiming the Cannon Repairing Able to use the Mini-Helicopters to fly around and unload bullets onto the weak points. So playing it in co-op was great, the AI will sometimes load the cannon but not reliably.
Me and a friend managed to clear that stage before the patch nerfed the difficulty. The current difficulty is so easy compared to the original where your character would get knocked off their feet constantly and you died by falling off the train fairly often. So much so that you had to see when the bug was going to hit the train and jump to stay alive. I miss that franchise.
Since you mentioned the Sonic Cycle and the Pokemon Cycle, I feel I should mention there's a Zelda Cycle too: 3-4 games ago: "The peak of the franchise." 1 game ago: "Underrated gem." Current game: "The worst one so far." Also, as a Digimon fan, I feel you.
I played so much battle revolution. We had a nice little community of competitive DP players. I have so many great memories seeing fights playing out on a giant projector screen. It turned Pokemon into a spectator sport and It felt epic.
Growing up, the only Phantasy Star I had was III (and that was from a used game store my brother and I would frequent in the 90s) until I picked up the GBA collection and grew to love 1 and 2 (especially 2). I still honestly don't mind 3, but it is a huge departure from the others and I can't get myself to play through a whole generation anymore. Still need to find time/drive to play IV at some point...
As someone who played it when it came out and admittedly a lot of nostalgia for it, I will always go to bat for Battle Revolution. It is still fun to playthrough and the battle simulation is great. Yeah there really is a dearth of content but man I still love it.
I've never played Phantasy Star games outside of the PSO games. This video, despite its topic, makes me want to track down the other games in the franchise and give them a try.
nice job I didn't even know about most of these and I would like to see a full video about capcom's bad games since I was a capcom fanboy that snapped out of it during that era
OMG, you showed the still of Ruin meeting the group in Phantasy Star IV, and I could hear his theme immediately. Thank you for this nostalgia beat in my head
Since you mentioned SoulCalibur in the lead up to Death by Degrees, there is actually one soulcalibur I can say is actually bad. SoulCalibur Legends. It was a Wii game that was a 3D beat 'em up that used the wii's motion controls to execute combos. It was very awkward and wasn't great to play. There was only one reason I even tried playing the game. It's surprise guest character. Lloyd freakin Irving. As in Tales of Symphonia Lloyd. They even had 2 soulcalibur themed remixes of Like a Glint of Light and Fatalize. I was excited to play as Lloyd in a soulcalibur game...but then I actually played the game. I beat it but...I don't think it was worth it.
You had to pay to save in Phantasy Star 3. Early on I would forget this, spend all my money, go back outside to earn five Meseta so I could save. And that dungeon music, the repetitive dungeon music, gives me nightmares to this day
😂 OMG!!!! One of the songs you are used during the Lost Planet 3 segment is Meribia from Lunar Silver Star Story! :D I LOVE the LUNAR series.... 😑 except Dragon Song on the DS. THAT ONE fell FLAT.
Sucks to see Pokemon Battle Revolution on this list because for what it was designed for, it did really well. As a way to take your guys from Pokemon Diamond/Pearl and then battle online and make a custom avatar, complete with fashion, it was fantastic. Also it was great for training and making legal competitive Pokemon because you could earn items and TMs that were unobtainable via the DS games alone. Battle Revolution's online battles were also much smoother than the DS online connections, and it looked great, sounded great, ran great, and had a catchy soundtrack that I still use for some ringtones. I never liked the Gamecube Pokemon RPGs because of their characters and world I didn't care for/slow pacing and slow battling/everything taking forever because every battle being a double battle, so when it was cut out and condensed back into just battling in Battle Revolution, I was more than happy. Plus they sped the animations up in battles and made it all have a sleek presentation that worked really well with the Wiimote and interface. Also I'm pretty sure the game retailed for less than a regular MSRP Wii game? I mean, the game's title is "Battle Revolution" - it's exactly what it set out to do. If you're judging it based on other titles, might as well include the Gamecube Pokemon Box Ruby & Sapphire in this list for just being a glorified Pokemon storage system that requires both a GBA and an expensive Gamecube/GBA Link Cable 🤷♀🤷♀🤷♀
Hearing about JRPG's and Capcom gave me hope you'd talk about Breath of Fire. That series isn't talked about anymore and more people need to know about 3 and 4
@@christianpeavey8262 Dragon Quarter is a masterpiece imo. My favorite BoF, followed closely by 3. But I also get why many were put off. I think it was a game ahead of its time with its unique mechanics and difficulty
I've at least tried every Breath of Fire games prior to DQ. BoF1 is alright (though that's the one I played least), I enjoyed 2 up until the grinding effectively became too much for me to handle, and both 3 and 4 is my all-time favorite JRPGs of all time. And honestly, hearing people talk about how they really like/hate Dragon Quarter makes me want to play it more. And I sure as hell hope that at some point we're getting a BoF6.
I sadly sacrificed my Blastoise all the way from FireRed then to Emerald then to Diamond and lastly to Battle Revolution :-( I still get kinda sad thinking about it
Another problem with Battle Revolution is that they still had some N64 models in it, Venonat for example. Ninetales also seemed to still have the N64 model. They did touch them up a lot but for a 2006 game, that was still pathetic.
It’s funny how people keep pointing to the models in that game as an example of Game Freak being “lazy” with the recent games due to reusing models when those models were reused from games two whole console generations prior lol.
@@amirgarcia547 The problem is that the models are on the Switch and they looked worse than the ones on the Wii. I have no problem with reusing models, but at least make them look better on the stronger hardware. Not to mention that they outright lied about the models being new in order to quell the outrage of dexit. It really doesn't matter if the models are reused or not, the important thing is that they should at least look good. Sakurai was reusing assets from Smash 4 to make Smash Ultimate, and no one cared because the models still looked fucking good, even on the new hardware. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Explorers reused Sprite work from Rescue team, but no one cared because the sprites and the game were fucking good. Sword and Shield looked like an upscaled DS Game. That actually made the graphics worse, since the models weren't actually built for this resolution.
That sharp X1 version of SMB Special looked kinda cool with its blacklight colors. Whenever I played SMB Crossover (or when I could I mean) I always used the SMB Special levels, with the Probotector Robots.
I’m glad he sayed he loved RE 5. RE 5 is actually awesome and it’s also one of the great co op games ever made. I beat it with my 13 year old nephew a few months back and he loved it so much he wanted to play the rest of the franchise with me. Unfortunately 5 is the only co op but man did they nail. Also mercenary more was fantastic
man! Double Helix's Strider is so good!! is an absolute shame we will never get a second game in that style I'm not saying the Sonic Cycle is a lie... but honestly most people who swear by it happen to be the same people who hate on the games before they are even announced, so yeah is kinda disingenuous to call it disappointing, if anything that's very appointing
I don't necessarily think Dragon Age 2 was all that bad. I think everyone got very disappointed because of the limited and repetitive areas. Don't get me wrong, it's not great; especially compared to the other games. However, the story was good in my opinion and it added more to the combat that made it feel a lot more active.
Yooooo!!!! I also have a huge amount of nostalgia for lost planet. I feel like the second game got judged for bugs if I remember right. Still one of the most satisfying third person shooters I've played.
To be fair pokemon has absolutely never ever ever been hard. The GC ones had some difficulty spike. And yes DPP had Cynthia but wow if you had basic knowledge of a rpg pokemon has never been difficult. Why else would there be so many fan rom hacks to increase difficulty of every single Gen of pokemon? The truth is we're all older and have tons more rpgs under are belt
That's just it though, Pokémon is literally Baby's First RPG meant to show neophytes the ropes instead of just letting them get their teeth kicked in by slimes and goblins until they either get it or get bored and go back to Fortnite.
Honestly yea. I just went through OG RGB and it was stupidly easy. Especially at 4-7 badges just until 8 badge and Elite 4 where it's not hard it's just lvlcap rapidly jumping up 20 lvls
The fact that you can plan ahead for gyms and leagues through typing and over leveling has always made it easy for me but I think the challenge always came from completing the pokedex with the older games before the quality of life stuff showed up and shiny hunting. People did also invent nuzlocke challenges to make up for the lack of difficulty.
Honestly, they should give Battle Revolution another shot, and since the Switch is a hybrid, maybe they could allow players who own the mainline games the ability to unlock late game items early. And by items, I mean clothing items for your trainer and pokemon. Like if you could unlock classic Diamond and Pearl outfits if you have BDSP or maybe even Legends outfits if you have that game.
Before I became a big fan of Dead Space I would see copies of Lost Planet 3 in gamestop and get confused over how similar it looked to Dead Space 3 in they few screenshots I had seen online. So Lost Planet is like a bug hunting game where you hunt down multiple hivemind like creatures but only difference is it's not a giant Tentacle monster made out of human flesh, it's like Earth Defense Force meets Monster Hunter or is that incorrect assessment?
Yes. Lost Planet was Capcom's attempt to reach Western Players and introduce them to Monster Hunter style gameplay. Only with an art style that would appeal to them. Same goes with Dragon's Dogma. Both are great series and as we know eventually Monster Hunter became a runaway hit in the West
12:24, Being from argentina it always surprises me how similar our likes were just by living in the nineties(Rika, Rina, Order of Eclessia, seiken densetsu3, and many many others that I've seen from your videos). It does make me feel nostalgic for something I hadn't realized I missed. Like knowing there where many other people with the same interests when I was a child, but there was no way to connect with them.
I don’t know why Death Degrees get so much hate, it’s a good game. Was it something new? Yes, was it a weird fighting system? Yes the analog to be used to do combos was odd but manageable. At the time of launch it wasn’t worth it, but these days it a unique beat em up with weird controls that’s still decent. At least it’s better final fight street wise lol.
RAID SHADOW LEGENDS IN THE HOUSE! Glad to see another video of yours once again, always love to see your perspectives on things since we come from a similar time so a lot of relateable stuff. I was definitely expecting Capcom at the top of the list, since the first thing that came to mind for me was Breath of Fire personally. I wonder, if you do enjoy the Phantasy Star games, if you would ever consider doing like a deeper retrospective? the older games I guess were more direct but after PSO1 there were all the offshoots and spinoffs, between consoles and hand helds.
3 was one of the best games I played last year. I remember liking it on PS2 but didn't click with me like lets say Dragon Quest 8. But game was super fun and interesting and i loved getting lost in it. Twist at the end didn't take away anything. Didn't affect anything. Just was an interesting discovery. If you played the game for 20 plus hours and all of a sudden think because of that, nothing matters, that's a personal problem. Or whatever reason people hated it. I don't freaking know lol
The problem with Pokémon is they have the money and man power to do better but they don’t that’s why the fans me included are acting like spoiled brats and don’t like what garbage the Pokémon company and gamefreak is giving us
Agreed, I liked Sword and Shield but..I know that it can better. I liked that they made dlc instead of a third version, so one step forward two steps back?
God, I remember when Capcom was in that awful funk in the 7th gen. But they really seemed to snap out of it with a ton of games for series that we thought were dead at the time. I'm still so glad we got Capcom back on the good list.
@@HolyGoddessMotherAnne Stree Fighter 4 is still in that iffy period. I'm talking about the more recent period with Mega Man 11, DMC V, and all the Resident Evil games that they've released (7, Village, 2 and 3 remake)
Throwing my hat into the suggestion pile: Would really like to see some videos on Phantasy Star / PSO, or Star Ocean. Whether a series retrospective, or a video on a single game in particular--Im in a Sci Fi JRPG kinda mood. (If you did videos on those before, sorry) Cheers!
Regarding Super Mario Bros Special. The best way to play it would be the remake in Super Mario Bros Crossover (End of Flash notwithstanding) and also a hack of Super Mario Bros that ports the game to SMB's engine.
I had Star Ocean: Till the End of Time when I was younger, but I was never able to get very far in the game. If anything, would you be willing to release a future video on that game? I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.
3D All-Stars isn’t bad either considering it’s just a simple remaster/port of three great games. The problem is that it was overpriced for what it was *and* the limited release BS was super scummy.
Man... Lost Planet 3... That stings. The first game was great and the second is one of my favourite games of its generation and probably my favourite co-op game of all time. And then that happened...
- I - knew it was the Battle Revolution Palkia on the video pic because I LOVED that game 😭 between my brother & I, we had all the requirements to transfer Pokémon over, it truly did make the game a whole new experience. fun fact: the leaders have unique “outfits” that you can wear after defeating them. it’s in the theme of a Pokémon. anyway, those outfits have a chance to roll SHINY like a Pokémon encounter!! I think the shiny Groudon outfit is the rarest event / item across the *entire* Pokémon game series. the character customization had so much depth as well, being able to choose from Cool/Young/Little/Muscle & further equipping them with different aesthetic choices like hats, gloves, backpack, hair/eye colors.. this was honestly so nostalgic to watch lol.
i remember i bought Pokemon Battle Revolution with my very limited birthday money as a child thinking it was like Pokemon Colosseum/Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness but with character customization and a part of that series, only to be disappointed and incredibly upset. i was so confused why there was no story, why there was no overworld and places to explore, no characters. only battling. shit upset me so much i never bought another spinoff game again until legends arceus came out lmao

@@DesertRainReads agreed. It's my favorite out of the first four games.
In my opinion, Nintendo’s spin off games got worse after they took single player story modes out of them. Golf, Tennis, Pokémon apparently, they all got worse after they scrapped it.
Well tingle spinoff games exist so No.

@@kidkytes6233 They wanted to milk the MMO market at the time and it worked since nobody remembers PS being a RPG over that sadly.
When SEGA turned one of the best Beat'em ups into an RPG they still do that...
11:04 Haha no, I recognize that Palkia render anywhere.
I do like how they got the Pokemon narrator to do the commentary. Very charming.
I suppose people who played it back then can never forget.
Same for Stadium 1 and 2!
@@SlamBolts Nope, that was Ted Lewis, who played various Stadium announcers in the show.
Still play BR to this day, It's a good challenge doing those post game challenges.
I have _never_ seen that Honchkrow animation before. That's absolutely delightful.
So Death by Degrees DID have a very early example of x-ray attacks in games, but there's one that came earlier, one that people forget, largely because everyone forgets about the game
Fight Club on the PS2, which came out a scant 3 months earlier
Fight Club was janky but fun jank even if it completely misses the point of the film and book.
Well unlike Fight Club, I've actually played DBD lol
Is not that people forgot about it, is that you don't talk about the fight club
Honestly, I'd love to see lost planet come back. Maybe if they went full-on monster hunter in space?
i could see that, monster hunter in space with guns and giant mechs. just hoping its better than the dino crisis that was basically that, but with space zombie dinos and without the mechs... also sucking ass.
I'll fight you Austin, Til the end of time is genuinely a great star ocean game and the last good one, hilariously goofy voice acting included
It kept to the spirit of the first two games
*You start fighting like Raiden, and Armstrong.*
I'll go get the pitchforks. Time to put someone else on the thrown.
I thought it was never actually going to release lol
Never played a Xenoblade game so I don't care about 3 but I love Digimon and Digimon games.
DW1: monster raising
DW2: mystery dungeon
DW3: Virtual reality/amazing sprite work
DW4: 3D beat em up
I could go on and on and on lol, but I won't. Although I'll skip straight to where we are currently. A tactics game, which is completely new for the series as well. I'm hoping the visual novel aspect of the game isn't turning anyone away. It's so deep and I'm loving the dynamic between all the characters.

The DS one was good too.
Seeing someone bring up Phantasy Star and Shining Force is great, both series do not get enough love online and I blame Sega for that.
The Battle Revolution announcer would fit in pretty much every Pokemon game. He's also been the English narrator in the anime for god knows how long.
Once a month I need to take my immunsopresants for my arthritis. The needle for it is suuuper painful so I usually just sit with it by my leg for like 25 minutes anticipating the pain. So I usually look for a video around that length that’s chill so I can try to distract myself from it.

Honchrow death animation is amazing thanks for showing me that
"milady *d13s*" honchkrow is my favorite pokemon for that.
Could also add Mortal Kombat : Special Forces to that list too. Even MK vs DC.
at least Chibi-Robo Ziplash is better than Chibi-Robo Photo Finder!

The Godfather games also did this
Maybe not the biggest franchise, but Left Alive has to be the worst game in the Front Mission franchise.

Loading Ammo (and empowering if you took a extra second)
Aiming the Cannon
Repairing
Able to use the Mini-Helicopters to fly around and unload bullets onto the weak points.
You should try that romhack that ports special's levels, enemies and power ups to a proper nes rom. It ends up being a pretty good time.
Oooh. I didn't know that existed. Thanks.
what is the name of this romhack, and what game is it for?
Since you mentioned the Sonic Cycle and the Pokemon Cycle, I feel I should mention there's a Zelda Cycle too:
3-4 games ago: "The peak of the franchise."
1 game ago: "Underrated gem."
Current game: "The worst one so far."
Also, as a Digimon fan, I feel you.
I would like to see a review of the other phantasy star games
"I play Tekken"
Nice
"I play Alisa Bosconovitch"
Oh.
I've never played Phantasy Star games outside of the PSO games. This video, despite its topic, makes me want to track down the other games in the franchise and give them a try.
I don't care if it's wrong or socially unacceptable, I really liked Death By Degrees. 🥴 The jank and stupid story were part of its charm.
i felt that way towards lost planet 3, its nowhere near as bad as people say, it may be uninspired and bland. but its not awful.
I love DBD. Beat the main game but I couldn't beat the Anna Williams mode that you unlock after beating the main game.
nice job I didn't even know about most of these and I would like to see a full video about capcom's bad games since I was a capcom fanboy that snapped out of it during that era
i played a lot of Battle Revolution back in the day... and i still play a lot after TwitchPlaysPokemon reworked it into it's own thing.
And that dungeon music, the repetitive dungeon music, gives me nightmares to this day
Everyone heard it, right?
Austin totally promised a full video on bad Capcom games
Agree 100 percent. a much worse pokemon spinoff is hey you pikachu.
The bad guy on the Phantasy Star 3 box art is the Skeletor Disks of Doom action figure from the New Adventures of He-Man toy-line.
The coincidence of the Scott The Woz new video and this Barrel Blast video is overloading me xD

Hearing about JRPG's and Capcom gave me hope you'd talk about Breath of Fire. That series isn't talked about anymore and more people need to know about 3 and 4
I've never played 5, but I know it's not remembered fondly. BoF4 meanwhile is one of my favorite JRPG combat systems to date.
Dragon Quarter is so vastly different from the others so I can get why people were put off but man it's such a unique and pretty cool RPG
Hey, 2 is also good and 1 while kind of generic, has some cool stuff. 5 I never played and 6... let's just pretend it doesn't exists.
I sadly sacrificed my Blastoise all the way from FireRed then to Emerald then to Diamond and lastly to Battle Revolution :-( I still get kinda sad thinking about it
I would love a take down of Alundra 2, I once spent my very meager allowance on it, and I've been bitter for like 20 years lol
Underrated channel, it should have 1 million by now. I think that Austin is an excellent youtuber.
Another problem with Battle Revolution is that they still had some N64 models in it, Venonat for example. Ninetales also seemed to still have the N64 model. They did touch them up a lot but for a 2006 game, that was still pathetic.
Some of them got better textures but no texture is gonna increase the polygons on a model...
You thought I'd fall for the remake bait? Ha! I knew that Palkia render too well to fall for your silly games!

So I didn't make up the Death By Degrees demo disc I had in some fever dream, gotcha.
It's bad. And you're severely understating the repetitiveness. I didn't know games could be that lazy until I played DA2
@@thuongn85 completing pokedex is impossible if you don't have friends or second copy. It's not a challenge, it's forced co-op.

Love the insert of the Lunar tune in the last part.

I wonder, if you do enjoy the Phantasy Star games, if you would ever consider doing like a deeper retrospective? the older games I guess were more direct but after PSO1 there were all the offshoots and spinoffs, between consoles and hand helds.
Star Ocean: Till The End of Time was a masterpiece compared to Integrity and Faithlessness

Damn right, and I personally prefer 3 over 4 as well. The combat of 4 was better but that’s about it imo
I disagree. 3 is a giant slog. 5 is very consistently paced and fun throughout.
Great video! Also it was great meeting you at Anime Wonder, and you bought the Bussey sticker!! (Buc-es sticker)
It was nice meeting you as well! I gotta slap it on my tablet asap.
Yeah i agree I just throw a fit because i want them to do better.
thanks, now the cleffairy song is stuck in my head too
God, I remember when Capcom was in that awful funk in the 7th gen. But they really seemed to snap out of it with a ton of games for series that we thought were dead at the time. I'm still so glad we got Capcom back on the good list.
Oh yeah the new Mega Man games, the Phoenix Wright sequels, Marvel Vs Capcom 3 aka the best one next to 2, Street Fighter IV and many others.
@@HolyGoddessMotherAnne Stree Fighter 4 is still in that iffy period. I'm talking about the more recent period with Mega Man 11, DMC V, and all the Resident Evil games that they've released (7, Village, 2 and 3 remake)
@@darienb1127 Street Fighter IV was ok.
@@HolyGoddessMotherAnne That's not what I meant. I just meant i'm talking way more recent than that.
@@darienb1127 o.
Throwing my hat into the suggestion pile:
Would really like to see some videos on Phantasy Star / PSO, or Star Ocean. Whether a series retrospective, or a video on a single game in particular--Im in a Sci Fi JRPG kinda mood.
(If you did videos on those before, sorry)
Cheers!
Regarding Super Mario Bros Special. The best way to play it would be the remake in Super Mario Bros Crossover (End of Flash notwithstanding) and also a hack of Super Mario Bros that ports the game to SMB's engine.
I never beat alundra 2. Last boss I remember was the bill in the spiral tower. But that “pirate of the sea” song was a bop
_Batman: Arkham Knight_ isn't a bad game but with the weak story and heavy emphasis on tank gameplay makes it a poor finale to an amazing series.
How did the quality drop so damn much between Alundra and Alundra 2? Matt McMuscles should really make a "Wha Happun?" on that...
I had Star Ocean: Till the End of Time when I was younger, but I was never able to get very far in the game. If anything, would you be willing to release a future video on that game? I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.
Wait wait wait...some of the team who made LEGENDARY went on to work on God of War??
Man, that's a comeback
-> claims Mario games made by Nintendo aren't bad
-> shows the logo for 3D All-Stars
3D All-Stars isn’t bad either considering it’s just a simple remaster/port of three great games. The problem is that it was overpriced for what it was *and* the limited release BS was super scummy.
I mean they are good games, maybe just not the greatest release of them.
@@Gatorade69 That's debatable. SM64 has aged like milk, SMS had a lot of good ideas but was needlessly difficult, and SMG was just kinda average.
Man... Lost Planet 3... That stings. The first game was great and the second is one of my favourite games of its generation and probably my favourite co-op game of all time. And then that happened...
cannot begin to describe the disappointment Battle Revolution brought me as a kid, hearing you go in-depth about it was healing
Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness was one of the worst JRPGs I've ever had the displeasure of playing.
I think one thing it deserves some credit for is having the entire party in battles. That's something I want more RPGs to take a crack at.
Did he unironically call himself a "digimon guy"
😂
i remember i bought Pokemon Battle Revolution with my very limited birthday money as a child thinking it was like Pokemon Colosseum/Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness but with character customization and a part of that series, only to be disappointed and incredibly upset. i was so confused why there was no story, why there was no overworld and places to explore, no characters. only battling. shit upset me so much i never bought another spinoff game again until legends arceus came out lmao
Legends arceus is officially a mainline game, so you still haven't bought a spin off.
That’s a large shame since Pokémon had by far their best spin-offs from that era such as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Pokémon Conquest and Pokémon Ranger.
@@amirgarcia547 let that be a testament to just how betrayed i felt by battle revolution lmao
