Pattern maker by trade here, the hem problem with circle skirts is really part of the "nature" of circle skirts, so there's probably nothing wrong in the way your drafting your patterns! Since the surface of the circle skirt is cut on different grain directions all at once (on grain, half-bias, bias), the various sections of the fabric react differently depending on where they were cut compared to the grain. As other comments suggested, the best thing to do is letting the garment rest on the dressform for at least one night and then trim the excess while still on the dressform to make it even 😊
i gasped when you revealed your final patchwork fabric, then you were like this doesn't seem that impressive, meanwhile my jaw was on the floor. i love it!!
I've literally just stumbled across this video in the wild, but I had the pleasure of seeing you on the runway and this beautiful creation in real life! Your smile brought everything together on stage, my favourite of the day! You should be so proud of everything you achieved with this garment and helping with Dangerous Females!!
As a quilter I LOVE a good pressed seam moment. There is just something so satisfying when all your seams are neat and tidy. I may be the only person to ever see the underside of that quilt but I love knowing how perfect they looked before they got locked away inside. Lol I absolutely loved the color palette of this dress. It’s a burst of joy. Well done Carly!
I’ve been sewing puff sleeves on my t-shirts and ruffle collars all day~ with your videos in the background for motivation! I love everything you make! 💕💕💕💕
for circle skirts, I typically will let them hang for a while to allow the fibers to relax. once that’s done I measure up from the floor and mark the fabric to get an even hem! I love your videos so much and have been anxiously awaiting this video after seeing your posts on instagram❤
This is the answer. Since part (but not all) of the circle skirt is on the bias, it stretches out unevenly after being by cut. No matter how perfectly you draft it, you’ll still need to hang it for a few days and then trim it even before hemming.
Gorgeous work. Some advice from a quilter for next time you sew strips together. Try sewing them onto a lightweight fabric using the stitch and flip method. Cut a piece of lightweight fabric to the shape you want, make your strips, then sew onto the lightweight fabric. First strip is right side up, second strip right side down aligning with the edge of first strip, sew the strip then flip and iron. The seams will be tucked between the patchwork and the lightweight base fabric and you won’t have to overlock the seams. ❤
I've been working on a temperature quilt since the beginning of the year. I'm quite proud of it so far. Below Zero is black fabric, 1-5 F is light purple, and so on through the rainbow. And I'm doing half square triangles so I'm logging both the lowest temperature of the day and the highest. If it rains or snows, I add a special stitch down the center seam of the HST.
I always have to go over my circle hem again. Like hang it on the mannequin and mark it with my hem chalk tool that rolls around the garment and spits out chalk. And then I recut!
You could try chain piecing and strip piecing for efficiency. Patchwork is part of quilting, so a ton of quilting efficiency techniques would help you with patchwork
I never felt the need to make patchwork until watching your videos, but having seen this & the quilted hoodie, and seeing the love and care you're able to put into it, I'm already planning a patchwork project themed around one of my favorite bands & embroidered with all of the lyrics that mean the most to me. It feels so silly to watch this video about the most beautiful and bright dress I've ever seen and have it give me the inspiration for the most rock/metal-inspired project I've ever done, but it really speaks to how universal art can be! Aside from that, I've been crocheting a pastel/celestial themed lace wizard hat so I have something silly and fun to wear in the spooky season. And, just had to add, the kindness that you and your boyfriend share is so sweet! It had me smiling my ass off without even noticing.
You’re fabulous! As a beginner/intermediate sewer you are my go to for inspiration! I’ve learned lots of little tips from watching you sew. Thanks for sharing!
I love that you've found and are funny your aesthetic and your shapes. What you're doing is very inspiring! I want to do what you do. In a different clothing style completely, and I'm not nearly as far along as you are and I'll use mostly different skills to get there. And yet it's also the same thing. Love your trouble shooting.
I started watching you a few days ago and love your videos so much! Popped in to share that I gasped in my head when you sang at 4:21 because not only are you SO lovely and talented and creative, you're apparently also an INCREDIBLE singer!
I can’t say anything except that I am impressed, how your dress is amazing, and beautiful. I felt such a big connection with this your work, it gave me the power to do my things and to create, even if I am a beginner sewist, just trying to make a simple top from old pink sheet. So inspiring and strong work!
I'm so excited for you! What an amazing accomplishment! (And as a survivor of DV, thank you for participating). You've inspired me to start sewing again. I just did a big overhaul of my 1967 Singer that was given to me. I love your content and just who you are as a person. Sending love from Canada ❤❤❤
This was so lovely to watch, you’re so talented 🥹. The final montage made me tear up a bit - I think it tapped into that sweet, carefree inner child playing in their favourite dress. Filled my heart 💖 thank you Carly!!
This is so so special!!! It's incredible how much love you put into it and it really paid off! The dress is SO STUNNING!! Also this video was just so cozy and the perfect thing to crochet to❤
What a beautiful patchwork! ❤ true artistry 😍 Next time you're gonna cut through patchwork, so you don't have to worry about the seams opening: you can run a stitch on top of your marker lines, and then cut next to that so you know your hard work is protected as you move the piece around 😊
I adore circle skirts, and have even made a few dresses and shirts using the circle skirt method. Also a huge fan of princess seams, which are cut on the bias, so also warp quite a lot. Really there is nothing you can do pattern wise that would avoid wonkyness, as it’s caused entirely by the fabric. I have used a wool that didn’t shift at all, and a linen that warped so much I was able to recut the belt I had burned with my new iron. All you can do is hang it on your dress form and cut it the next day (or on a hanger, but don’t cut it on the hanger).
This look so freaking amazing!!! The amount of time that went into this garment was 100% worth it!!! Also when you were talking about how you get mentally drained when doing the design process- GIRL SAME!!! Yesterday I was working on a thrift flip and fixing up some issues I had- but man it took it the WHOLE DAY. But I didn’t really do much to the garment, just so much back and forth etc etc. Anyways, can’t wait for the next video ! :)
I love that dress!! It's so joyful! you can get hem markers (they puff chalk at whatever height you set) if hem lengths stress you out, and you can also do it while you're wearing it which is extra helpful if your mannequin doesn't completely match you
honestly worth all your hard work it turned out amazing. Your makes are so inspirational. I love the shapes you create and your use of color. I've done tiny bits of sewing but you've made me think maybe i should give making my own clothes a try. So far all I've ever sewn is linings to crochet or knit bags I've made and little things like zipper pouches but I have always wanted to make my own clothes. thank you so much. enjoyed your video very much.
This is so beautiful and joyful! I loved watching the patchwork take shape, and the finished garment is so lovely! I just finished my current make, which is the popular opposite of this, lol! It's a black dress with a subtle cream and brown floral print, and I love how it turned out. 😊 Tomorrow I start something new!
i am so so impressed, i hope you know what a special special piece you created. it should be in a museum honestly you are so talented and dedicated to create a dress so beautiful and priceless.
this is bbeeeauutiful. i recently made the "matilda dress" out of big patchwork panels and im impressed with my, maybe 16 panels of patchwork's seams, but yours are simply exquisite. such a fine craftsmanship of sewing.
This dress is just phenomenally beautiful!! I am speeechless!!! Thank you so much Carly for sharing your process with us. It’s so helpful for me as a beginner sewer and designer!
Absolutely stunning dress Carly. Like others have mentioned, a circle skirt is cut across several grains (cross, straight and bias) so there will always be some ‘drop’ as the fabric relaxes the most on the bias. Leaving it to hang for 24 hours before recutting the hem will help to keep an even hem. I always pin hem my circle skirts. Some call it a rolled hem. It gives me a much neater finish going across all the grains, so something to consider for future circle skirts. And if you ever need help with drafting a circle skirt in one or more panels, I have a circle skirt template on my website, which many have used and made gorgeous skirts with. Love seeing how your drafting skills get better with every video! 😍
this is the most amazing piece I have ever seen! It's gorgeous! Kudos for the unbelievable effort that you put into it! I hope it raises all the funds for such a worthy cause

Amazing work Carly! I’m at the beginning of my sewing journey and you inspire me! Thank you!
So pretty, love your vision & completed design. Very well done. I agree about letting the garment hang over night before hemming so it can settle from all the piecing. A littlextailoring tip: I noticed when u were trimming the seams at the cuff it's best to grade the inside seams of the bias tape. Keep the one layer longer that is closer to the public side of the garment & the shortest trim closest to the stitch line. Then it will lay flatter without a bulk at the seam line.
i use this same patchwork technique using offcuts of men's suit pants; so cool and rewarding to see the ombre take effect using that technique!!! so glad this was displayed in a fashion show supporting such a good cause. you continually amaze me!! you could totally use the scraps to make bunting for decor, if you're looking for ideas for them
Carly, you are just so incredibly talented! I love your work and I love watching you think through and tackle these ambitious projects. You're amazing and the dress is absolutely sublime! It's "Dangerous Pink Lemonade!"
This is beautiful! You are such a good quilter.. and I loved seeing your cheery quilt in the background of some shots. I also love that gingham collared shirt you were wearing while hand stitching outside. You are able to get through so much sewing so quickly! I am currently slowly making a linen quilted coa,t heavily inspired by Kim Edith's Yackety Jacket, where she embroiders patches onto the coat to document the history of what she did and where she went in the coat (and the style/colors actually remind me a bit of your color palette).
Such an ambitious project and a great cause! The color gradient and patchwork is lovely and the finished dress is fantastic! I would wear the heck out of that!
It's projects like this that make me wish so so much that I could get into sewing, haha! It's _so_ gorgeous, so fun, and of course so unlike anything else! I adore the idea of being able to make one's own clothes, as quirky and colorful, or neutral and practical as one wants, but for some reason I just keep bouncing off sewing! Oh well, maybe some day; in the meantime I will just enjoy you talented video-making sewers lol
Dude, you're a really big inspiration to me, and I always love your videos. My sewing machine is broken right now, but you're inspiring me to sew so much once it's fixed. Thank you for making videos :)
Carly this is just so amazing! The dress, the video, doing all of this for such a great cause. You've outdone yourself (even when every single one of your projects is incredible!!). I hope the dress breaks all records at the auction, that this video gets millions of views, and that lots more people join your patreon!!
It's beautifullll! I am almost finished with my king-size reversible t-shirt quilt, which has been an intense, probably unwise first sewing project. It's gonna be super imperfect, but I am going to do my best to lean into the imperfections. I have a section of four eight-square rows (half of the quilt) stitched together, plus two sections of two eight-row squares that I need to stitch together tonight, and then I can stitch those two halves together, and then I just need to bind the edges (but still have to cut the fabric and sew the strips together for that bit). I've been working on it since May, and I think!!!! I am really going to finish it this weekend, finally!!
Just a FYI - RIT dye has a website with instructions and there’s a bunch of RUclips vids that I watched to dye a white rummage sale duvet cover to green. Quite pleased with results
I'm making a test version of a new dress pattern and was inspired to try out patchworking thanks to you! The pattern is meh, but patchworking is stealing my heart.
Hi! Love this dress so much, I think it will get a lot of attention on the show! As for me, I make a yellow muslin dress with big sleeves so I can look like a Pre-Raphaelite girl in autumn :)
I'm currently working on my first dress even though the skill level of the pattern is way too high hahaha. I'm also enjoying just altering clothes that I have to fit me better. 🥰 also this dress turned out stunning!! You're inspiring me to get into patchwork :)
I made your milkmaid dress last month and it actually turned out pretty good! Now that I’m a bit more confident with sewing clothes I’m working on a dress for my sister, hopefully it’ll turn out!
Hey carl for circle skirt: fold the skirt in halves after cutting keeping the waistline even and the extra will show up on the hemline. Cut off and then fold again. And cut again. Leave hanging for few days and repeat the process again. This gives quiet an even hem. Then you can finally measure again to check for minute uneveness.
It's a very cheerful dress, with all that yellow and pink. I need to go review your magic pants video as I am currently taping the pattern together and hope to start pinning tomorrow.
Currently, I'm working on a Victorian gored corset, I'm hand-stitching waist tape in today. Next level tedious. Have you considered using a knotted piece of string to draft your circle hems? It's a really old method, back when people needed clothes but didn't know numbers and math. In this case, you would've anchored the string at the point that was where you drew the neckline radius, measure how long your dress would be with hem allowance, knot a pen at that length, and use it to draft your curve. I do this when I need a circle hem, collar, waist, whatever. I despise hemming so anything I can do to make it easier or shorter, I am all for.
HI!!
what are you working on at the moment!? keep me posted!
take care friends & thank you for watching my video
This was such a fun project! Love the end result, just STUNNING; and what a great cause! 😍 I'm working on a macramé necklace at the moment 😀
I’m working on finding sewing classes!
Hello sister. You are not only beautiful, smart and also brilliant. I really like your sharing.
Pattern maker by trade here, the hem problem with circle skirts is really part of the "nature" of circle skirts, so there's probably nothing wrong in the way your drafting your patterns! Your boyfriend complimenting you in the final clip is the most adorable and his breakdancing is the best 😌 LURV the dress too! 💞

yeah seconding (or thirding) this answer! evening the hem is sadly not in the pattern but in the stretching afterwords.
This is truly a couture piece, really beautiful work!! I'm a quilter and I know how fiddly it is dealing with all those little strips :D
The dress is incredible! And what a special thing for whoever it goes home with, to be able to see how much time and care went into its creation

Helpful comment - love this tip!
why can my brain not wrap itself around this idea...any online tutorials showing this?

So beautiful. Hope the fashion show is a hit and that it sells for a high price. I absolutely love the dress.
Wow! The dedication and skill that went into this dress are beyond my comprehension and patience. Great work!

I totally love it!
Thank you so much!!!
It's a very cheerful dress, with all that yellow and pink. I need to go review your magic pants video as I am currently taping the pattern together and hope to start pinning tomorrow.
Really beautiful!
