Ave Maria was particularly associated with Marian Anderson. She sang it frequently at her concerts. She admitted that when she first tried it out she was worried by the length of the phrases in a slow tempo and put the copy away. Fortunately for us all some time later she took another look at the song. A unique artiste and a wonderful person.

Marian Anderson hailed from my hometown. We adore her here. We’ve a beautiful tribute mural downtown. My parents and grandparents generations loved her too. A friend of mine had the honor of providing at home nursing care to Ms Anderson in her later years and confirmed she was an absolute gem of a human being. Thank you for recognizing her contributions.

Yours is an old, tired theme that has, now, happily been updated. Eleanor Roosevelt invited
Ms. Anderson to perform in the White House in 1936 in segregated Washington, D.C. when the
DAR refused to welcome her to their own concert facility. Let us shine a light on our progress!

Wow! I love Marian Anderson's rendition of Schubert's "Ave Maria," but I wasn't aware that she had sung it on the Ed Sullivan Show. Interestingly, Schubert wrote this not as a setting of the traditional Catholic prayer, but as part of a secular song cycle whose lyrics are from an epic poem known in English as "The Lady Of the Lake." It is often sung with the Latin text of the Catholic prayer, but I love this version not only because of Ms. Anderson's ethereal voice, but also the fact that she sang it with the original German lyrics. As for the Ed Sullivan Show, it is rerunning (in 30-minute edited episodes) on Me TV on Sunday evenings as of 2021. I sure hope they air this segment sometime.

I love the Blessed Virgin, but the "Hail Mary" is not Schubert's original German text sung here. The lyrics are taken from the poem "Lady of the Lake" by Sir Walter Scott.
The text of "Ave Maria", the Latin prayer to the Blessed Virgin, was set to Schubert's composition much later.

    The angel told her,
“Don’t be afraid, Mary. You have found favor  with God.
You will become pregnant, give birth to a son,
    and name him Jesus.
He will be a great man
and will be called the Son of the Most High.
The Lord God will give him
the throne of his ancestor David.
Your son will be king of Jacob’s people forever,
and his kingdom will never end.”
Mary asked the angel, “How can this be? I’m a virgin.”
The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come to you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy child developing inside you will be called the Son of God.
    Amen.
