Seen her face in Black History Month not knowing who she was but after listening to her I've I know now what an angel sound like. Thank you. Miss Anderson God bless you... for your contribution to the world...
She came home, she showed 'm, and she conquered. Home from being trained & fêted in Europe to racist and hating US where she's really not welcome, and offers these precious, rare pearls to swine. The opening moments are spine chilling - a beautiful, imposing contralto, rich and deep and filled with spirit and emotion, now gloriously trained and refined into what was one of the very greatest voices of the 20th C. Delightful collateral damage was that she needed to argue nothing - her sound and artistry made fools of, and shamed, the white establishment of the time. The sheer, powerful beauty of her voice conquered. She was among the very greatest Americans.
Sublime.
I don't know why I've always thought She was a graduate of Howard University. It's amazing that she didn't attend college formally, but received several honorary doctorate degrees. You go, Ms. Anderson!
A really remarkable piece of 'the history of music'. Please can others collect more Marion Anderson film snippets and save them for all of us to wonder at.
