I believe you did a video a while back in AR coatings and why they are so expensive. So I did a little test. I have an older pair of Serengeti with drivers gold polarized from a few years ago (not sure about the year but it still had the “S” etched on the lens whereas the past few years they have “SERENGETI” ) and a new pair with the same lens. The newer one is definitely new with the current Italian (vs Japanese) frame. So looking at both lenses it would appear that the new ones have a much lighter and less pronounced purple AR costing sheen (for lack of a better term) whereas the older ones were very noticeable in that they had a deep AR coating. Cost cutting? Or just a different type of coating? The older lens itself was a bit more red in tint whereas the new one was more of an amber. I don’t have any concerns about authenticity of either pair. Seems when these iconic sunglass companies pass from corporate to corporate ownership there are indeed some “changes” take place. That’s not to say I necessarily think the older lenses are “better” but the reduced AR coating screams “cost cutting”
Maybe you’ve noticed similar things?
Cheers
hey Tom! Yes I did that one quite some time ago, good memory! Generally the reflectance color has little to do with the layer thickness and more to do with the components that make it up and the cure times. I haven't worked with, touched, or seen a serengetti in ages so can't comment much else there, but overall I would suspect just a different coating. Many of the newer AR technologies have prioritized minimizing the appearance of the coating :)
Great video. Thanks. Side shields that are removable are the best!
Thanks!! I love removable side shields!
Nice video!
🥂 thanks!!
Hi Matt, can you make more tint lens videos for everyday use? I know you made a couple videos in the past but would like to see more.. One question, can you wear a normal/ luggt tint with the blue light coating technology without it leading to any isuses? Cheers
Need to get back to my tint series no doubt! But yes most of the custom tints we do are done on blue blocking materials 🥂. Especially tints in the blue spectrum it’s beneficial for comfort.
Thanks for your video! You are basically the only source online that I've seen mention reflections of your own face in non-curved glasses! I purchased my first pair of really nice sunglasses only to realize that I could see my face reflected on them most of the time, even with cloudy conditions, and it limited my visual field, or at best it was distracting. After watching your video I returned them :( but I'm having second thoughts because I just can't find ones that I like as much. Do you have any words of advice or consolation? Haha. Model was Burberry Briar in a black & white frame.
A little adjustment with face form and panto goes a long way here but won’t eliminate the problem. The keys are get the lenses as close to the eyes as possible, then move the reflections by tilting the lenses both in at the bottom and around the face. You’ll still have reflections but they’ll be less noticeable or at least it’s directly in front of the eyes. This is why I despise super flat sunglasses…. As cool as they look….
@@ThatGlassesGuy03 I'll go back to the store and see how I can try to do this without yet bending them permanently or purchasing them and seeing how that looks. Thanks for replying!
Please do review of DITA Match S (black gold and brown) and DITA LNX EVO (blue and brown)
I’ld be happy to if I worked with DITA. Unfortunately those would be tough for me to get my hands on :)
@@ThatGlassesGuy03 How about maybach president 1 in blue and silver ?
Same predicament here: need to find "the one" sports wrap that has it all: function (lenswise, mostly) and (hopefully) good looks. I can afford to splurge so long as i find that...perfect pair! Any suggestions?
P.S.
Before you say it: no, am definitely not considering Maui Jim or other such brands so, steer clear!
“The one”. You know my relationship with vuarnet, and I’m still gonna throw the glacier model out there for this. It has a light wrap, but those added side shields for utility. Still looks classy AF, and lenses are 🔥. Revo would be next on the list, their air series is a personal favorite for a lightweight elegant sport look, and their Enzo in the matte and gloss black just vibes with me for no reason whatsoever. 😂🖤🚔🚔
Why not Maui Jim? I'm curious
@@nmot97 Never liked the brand and their styles. There's something...odd about them, at least for me.
@@wadsworth2351 oh okay. Thanks for answering 😊
@@nmot97 You're welcome ;-)
Make a video showing us your sunglasses collection, or as you put it, your sunglasses "wardrobe" lol. Idk why that's funny to me, a wardrobe IS a collection of things you wear, but ive never heard it used for glasses/sunglasses.
🥶 that’s a slippery slope, and most of my collection is always scattered about 😂😂. Every pair has its own vibe/purposes and usually for me is associated with a place. (Aside from my daily wear rotations) 😂😂. You know I heard it called an eyewear wardrobe once and that just stuck with me! I really quite liked it, just like shoes 😎
hey! off topic but is lens thickness the same for rx sunglasses as for glasses.. is there anything else to keep in mind when choosing (-6 in my case) sunglasses
This is actually a great question even if you didn’t know it!!! Polarized sunglasses will always be THICKER than regular glasses. Non polar will run noticeably thinner due to the difference in the way they’re produced. It’s about 1MM thicker on average but can be more in some cases.
I see both reflections of my eyes, and reflections of light. AR coating doesn't even resolve it. Its really perplexing and overwhelming.. Is there a certain base curve to mitigate this? Aside from tilt and wrap you mentioned.
Prescription power and fit of the glasses matter as well. Especially in sunglasses with mirrored lenses.
Just a quick query Matt: is there any truth to the assumption that, the more curved the lens is, the more chromatic aberrations there are? Similarly, the flatter the higher the optical quality? I don't even remember where i read this but it's just sprung to my mind. Maybe it's because i am still searching for that, next special pair of shades!
Cheers ;-)
Not at all, and generally the inverse is true in fact. If you ever wanna do some light reading (see what I did there 😂) I recommend digging in to information about corrected curve theory in ophthalmic lenses 😎. It makes the new Zeiss clear view lenses a bit of a joke and what I’ve dubbed “the second great flattening” which is always done in the name of cosmesis and nothing to do with best form optics.
@@ThatGlassesGuy03 As always thanks for the invaluable intel. Well then, i should definitely buy some wraparounds as my next pair of shades - i am partial to Zeiss lenses as you know, so i am really considering (premium) sunglass brands that have them pre-installed - do you know of any? I am not going to cheap out on these, so bring them on Matt ;-)
T Henri new releases from 23 forward and Anna Karin are all Zeiss optics 👀😂😎
As for sport wraps, I know Zeiss makes 9 base lenses but right off I’m not familiar with anyone using them… that seems further research.
@@ThatGlassesGuy03 Maybach, perhaps? Or Bentley, even...I'll keep looking!
Maybach would make sense being German based. I’ll reach out to a contact and find out. Their stuff is top notch no question. Do they have wraps?! 😂
