  • A mirror coating makes your lenses reflect light. Cosmetically, some people love them and others... not so much. But is it all cosmetic?
In this video we explore how a mirror coating on your sunglasses affects their performance - both positively and negatively -so you can decide if mirrored sunglasses are right for you.

This is the best informative footage on mirrored sunglasses online.
I drive with mirrored lenses facing the sun but must remove them with my back to the sun. They are great.
    Thank you.

Hey Jason, thank you so much. I'm glad you've found what I was talking about to be the case in real life. All the best.

very useful information. I’ve had a vigorous debate in my head abt mirrored vs non. Your comment “not easier to scratch but more noticeable” is encouraging. My local optician was kind of ambivalent but left me with the impression they scratch easily. It sounds like several pairs of sunglasses for varied conditions may be optimal but at $600+ each I’ll be busted. Might look at the photochromic version but I’ve heard they don’t go dark inside the car.

Thank you! Adaptive Sun lenses are perfect for driving. The tint level is just right, but they will go slightly lighter or darker depending on the conitions.

For fishing, blue mirror is best for oceans. Amber lenses with green mirror is best for river and lakes in my and many anglers opinion.

    Thanks, for the information.
I currently have some transition lenses and although I like them, I live in a very hot and sunny country they don't get particularly dark in warmer weather (anything over 25°C) which is exactly the time when you need darker lenses.
They are a little older though and I think the newer transition versions might have improved in this respect as well as the speed at which they change. Mine can take a good few minutes to go back to clear.
I think I am going to go for a mirrored pair, hopefully they will do the job.
From what you say, they seem more effective for cutting out glare than regular (non-polarized) sunglasses.
Everything is a trade-off and trying to find the perfect pair is a difficult.

You're completely correct about climate. It is a drawback of most photochromic lenses (although not Transitions Xtractive/Sensity Dark)
You're also right that everything is a trade off. That's why it's important to gradually build an eyewear wardrobe which covers as many bases as possible.
Thanks for the comment, and hope to see you around on the channel. Let me know if you need any more advice.

I only wear mirrored RX sunglasses as I’m so light sensitive. I have to wear even if it’s raining if I’m driving . I spent too much money on sunglasses with the darkest tint only to be squinting and miserable.

Please could you do a video showing how the colour of the mirror glaze affects the base tint. Eg a blue mirror on a grey lense moves the view towards a brown tint (I think?) It would be a nice follow-up to this video and your video on tints.

It was mentioned in the video. The mirror only affects how people see you. It doesn't affect the base colour on how you see.

Great video - very educational thanks! 👍 I can see how mirrored lenses would be good for driving, but maybe not so good when you're interacting with people because they hide the eyes. Eye contact is important especially these days when people are often wearing masks, so mirrored glasses could be off-putting 🤔just a thought 😎

Driving ,if sunny all though. What happens when you drive through a tunnel or the sun goes behind thick clouds? If glasses with prescription , you can't just take them off or swap with another pair .

Hi I live in Australia, my name is Margot, I have really enjoyed watching your posts, I especially like the REYKJAVIK glasses, unfortunately I don’t think they are available in Australia! I have been looking for new glasses and thought a clear or crystal frame would be nice . I have a small face and have no idea what to look at. Do you have any suggestions? I hope you will have time to suggest something that I may be able to get here.
My husband also likes the idea of the REYKJAVIK so we hope they will eventually come to Australia, With Regards Margot

Who manufactures adaptive lens? Is that similar to the Serengeti polarized transmission?

    • @thespectaclefactory

Zeiss makes them. Maybe similar, but Zeiss quality is even better.
