Funny thing the glasses on the left photo with the red cross look way better on him than the ones on the right with the green checkmark. The left one might be to big and the right one might be perfectly sized, yet the bigger one does look better on him. Forget the numbers, it's all about personal preferences and a matter of fit them on to see how they look.
dont know if anyone will see this but temple length does not matter with wrap temples like oakley crosslinks as unlike drop temples they dont rely on ears for hold.as they come with long and short snap ons i tested both and found it to be personal preference,glasses just dont move.

As much as there's often a premium for doing so, I'd say you're still better off shopping for them in person. The picture trick is an alright idea, but in person hopefully(if you got your vision checked as well) they can tell you what frame shape is best for you too...at least as far as prescription lenses go. When you throw a prescription lens in the mix, you now have to be worried about if frame x will distort your vision by curving too much, or being to tall, etc..
I know im 5 years late, but maybe you still dont know this yet.. you can heat up the temple with a heat gun and bend the temple slightly to fit perfectly around your ear. Its easy and any can do it. used to work at sunglass shop, and we adjusted for many customers

However, you forgot to mention that a wrong temple length can be fixed by heating it and reshaping it (depending on the material). I've had it done a couple of times. I have unlimited free customer service where I have been buying them since my parents bought my first ones for the first time.

That happened to me because I was not fitted properly, and now I have no idea how to determine what length I actually need, so I'm unable to order online.

You measure the length and width of your face. When you buy glasses they tend to have a guide on what size is best.
