Because Dr. Phil's audeniance is mostly women but he's wrong, everyone has a right to defend themselves in a reasonable manner, with just enough force to stop the aggression. The law is gender neutral, Dr. Phil is wrong. Now, he maybe be right on how the police will respond, blaming the man, that's why you're better off defending in the least violent manner as possible and it would look better if she left a mark, that way there's proof she was aggressive.

I have fought with one of my ex girlfriends before. One of my ex girlfriends was very physically abusive, I was bit, scratched, punched, slapped, kicked. Not Dr Phil victim blaming. Genuine accounts of self defence are protected by law, even if you kill that person. Phil had no right telling him he could only run away or hide, but not fight back. If he couldn't hide/run, he absolutely had every right to protect himself.
