Back in the 60s.. the government was still trying to get residents off their lands for redevelopment.. they are all introduced to the new public housing 8-10 storey tall. The needed a township kinda thing going and built this hawker and opened in 1970. Now that’s like making this place 52years old. Imagine half a century ago people were still living in wooden houses with zinc roof off the streets.. kampong days.
I couldn't find old pictures of the place.. but I only recalled that street side hawkers were still a sight all over Singapore till the early 80s.. so I wonder how did the residents take the new concept of a hawker centre in 1970? must have been like a modern day food court to them.

This has got to be one of the best videos on local food. Raw, un-adulterated sight, sound with just the right captions and without commentaries. Delightful. Powerful!

I grew up there. Blk 152 next to the hawker centre. Many stalls are gone now. Left with a hand full of the original stalls. 實惠園chicken feet hor fun, 何記燒, the chye tao kueh stall, the four coffee shops at four corners. The chye tao kueh stall is now run by the son. Still handmade. Hai Tang lor mee has retired but her apprentice has opened Chuang Xin lor mee stall just next to the fishball noodle stall. Others stalls are mostly relocated from the old Margaret Drive food centre next to the Queenstown library.
Try all the stalls. They are good.

Rarely visit this place and when I do, it's the fish ball or economy bee hoon stall. The Muslim stall sells $2 mee siam and lontong, but haven't been able to catch them for a long time.

Thank you for another excellent food video, much appreciate yr good work 👍 At the kuih stall, you asked what the Chinese characters are on one of the pastries. In Cantonese, it's "hom dau sa beng". In Mandarin, it's "xian dou sha bing". Translated it means savory bean cake, but it's actually a sweet bean paste filling. Perhaps the savory comes from a salted duck egg yolk. I'm not sure b/c I've not tasted this particular snack.

I moved there when I was in primary 6 till 24 years old. I missed the lok mee stall and the owner, now I am 63 living in Australia, wondering the loh mee owner is the second generation or new owner? The loh mee version is flesh from fried whole fish, sliced streaky pork, meat ball, egg. Put lots of chilli and vinegar is so so yum!!!!Use to eat the prawn mee hoon soup with rice, so to be full those day!!

Jus one question though. How on earth did u manage to eat all that food in one trip? I would have been filled up with one meal aredy. My husband says u must have done it on separate days! Haha.

Wow... this must have been the least you ate in recent videos but I guess its still breakfast. 2 slabs butter for 2 piece bread not enough for me... I eat butter with bread. haha. The beef brisket looks good though. Unfortunately you were there a little early. Many stalls are not even open. The Monkey thai food quite good and very reasonably priced.

Share with u a story. The very first time i visited the fishball mee stall, i tabao 2 packs no chili cos my partner and i were not feeling too good in the tummy. He asked if we want ketchup n i said yes. Reached home showered n got ready to sit down to enjoy the noodle only to hv me n partner staring at each other in disbelief. Theres no taste to the noodles. Zero, nada. Partner said nvr to buy from it again. After that i start to tidy up n found 2 sachet of ketchup at the bottom of the plastic bag. Sachets like the ones u get when u order fried ckn wings... i find that extremely weird, why would he not put ketchup inside the noodles and gave out sachets instead?? The fishball taste alright too, but i prefer the other stall in the same hawker centre

    • @Piggypuggy
      @Piggypuggy  Год назад

😂 hope the sachet wasn't mixed in with the noodles.. that'd be really weird. Maybe action too fast.. kancheong spider 😂

    • @apschweiz

@@Piggypuggy he packed the sachet outside of the noodle packet, he meant for customers to put the ketchup in noodles ourselves. That is a first for me, really bizarre

With inflated 2022 prices tho..that fishball noodle selling @4.50 for a standard bowl is a prime example. FYI, other fishball mee sells for an average of 3.50 at any hawker ctrs across the island.

No.. only some still offer budget meals. Some of the budget meals are really pathetic.. but some old estates hawkers still offers super good value meals just for their older customers whom they know struggles for a daily meal..

Are all the food video showing are organic dishes?
Are they encourage to eat organic dishes ?

As organic dishes are tasteless and no much sweetness.
Should use approved industrial food chemical to enhance the flavor of organic dishes.
The end product still go one place.
