    I started using the Yamaha Silent Guitar over a year ago and haven't looked back. No more feedback issues, and I don't have to carry anything "extra" to make it sound good . . I just set it to 100% MIC, turn down the treble and bass EQ just a bit, and go. It's become a bit of a "branding" issue for me, now . . . people wouldn't know what to think if I showed up with something else. Ha! I also own the ToneDexter, and I did download the YSG MAPs for it, but I haven't tried them out yet. As I start to do more gigs where I'm doing more than just 30 minutes or less, I might need to try the ToneDexter out myself and see if it's really worth taking it along or not. I agree with your two choices (the only two that are arguably better sounding than the built-in MAP, IMO), but I don't know if the improvement would be worth the extra hassle or not. I do have a tiny pedalboard setup with the ToneDexter and a Baggs Align EQ. I'd be curious to see what EQ settings on that you'd recommend starting with for either the AJ (at the 14th fret) or Voyage-Air (down-under) MAPs from AudioSprockets. Though I'd probably just go with the ToneDexter by itself, and put my Mic Mechanic 2 pedal for vocals in the other spot, instead. That way I'd only need the single board, which doesn't take up much space at all.

    These have a smaller headstock to help with balance. It only becomes neck heavy when I’m using my capo. I love the sound, played it multiple times through a DI into a large PA. Love these guitars, I think they are due for an update. 200s have been out for over 5 years.

      @@aaronshortmusic similar to the changes they made to the THR (Bluetooth) and integrate some of the newer modeling technology, more similar to what they have done in the newer A Series. I just ordered my son the Yamaha YEV-104 electric violin as well. I think it is going to serve him tremendously as a practice and rehearsal tool plugged into my THR amp. Highly recommend checking these out as well. Just so cool.

    Congrats man!

    Thank you so much!

      Hi! The silent guitar is excellent for distortion as it will not feedback like a full sized acoustic. The body percussion is not as effective as some other acoustic guitars but there is a little.

    Had a Yamaha SLG 110 Silent Guitar for 10 years now. Also, two SLG200’s in steel and nylon string versions. They are awesome guitars, but if you’re fixated with trying to achieve a great acoustic tone, with a pick, you will be disappointed. They are basically a solid plank of wood, with a piezo, under saddle pickup. That one fact, makes it like expecting an electric guitar to sound like an acoustic. The rigidity of the body makes the signal to the pickup very ‘hot’, so it can distort very easily under only moderate strumming. To remedy this, they should have a second pickup source, that can blend to take the hard edge off. Even then, its never going to fool your ear. This however, should NOT deter you from owning one. I used to have an Ovation ‘acoustic’ guitar years ago. It was great to play and always in tune. I hated its ‘choked’ unplugged sound, and I disliked the plugged in tone as well. It was because I should have bought a conventional acoustic. Once I started to see the Ovation as sounding uniquely ‘Ovationy’, I changed my mind. Yamaha Silent Guitars are the same. They are super lightweight and comfortable, with great necks and always stay in tune. They are also amazing for travel, as they pack down to fit in overhead luggage easily, and the bag is useful. They are ‘adequate’ for acoustic strummer songs, and really good for lead stuff. One unexpected delight was discovering that the overdriven signal from the piezo pickup, actually sounds amazing when plugged into a low wattage, electric guitar tube amp. It has a better dirty blues tone than any electric guitar I ever played. I actually think Yamaha are missing a trick, as I think they should fit a mini (active?) humbucker as well as the piezo for blending through their onboard electronics, but also for making potentially the most rocking electric on the market. This guitar is a beast. Just don’t get frustrated because the overly strident tone when strummed, doesn’t sound quite like your favourite acoustic. BTW, the Nylon sounds great for finger style and the big roomy neck makes it lovely and comfortable.👍

    Hey Aaron, with a Tonedexter, can you turn a Yamaha Silent Guitar into a Variax guitar…presuming someone goes to the trouble of making IR’s from a banjo, a resonator, etc.?

    • @aaronshortmusic
      @aaronshortmusic  3 года назад

      I am not sure. The Variax has separate piezos for each string. It may be possible in theory but I have not seen anyone try it and if they did I cannot believe it would work as well as a Variax.

    You didn't mention whether you're on the pickup or mic position when playing through the Tonedexter. Could you clarify? Very helpful video though. I've been thinking of picking up an SLG second hand and experiment with acoustic IR's on my Mooer Radar. I think the onboard sound is great for traveling but this thing has the potential to serve as a 'platform' for newly developed IR's that will likely continue to improve.

    3:00 There is no built-in mic in the Silent Guitar. I Own one.
    From Yamaha: SRT Powered is a new system designed to recreate the body resonance of an acoustic guitar in a bodiless guitar. Yamaha developed SRT Powered, collaborating with recording artists to create a system tailored to the unique properties of the new SLG body and modeled after the tones of a high-end Yamaha acoustic guitar captured using a carefully selected microphone in a professional recording studio environment. By actually reproducing the sound of an acoustic guitar-right down to its natural sustain and decay-Yamaha lets guitarists experience the genuine body resonance, body tone, and ambiance of an acoustic guitar.
    SRT Powered sound can even be mixed with the sound from the instrument's piezo pickups, allowing guitarists to be even more flexible in their creative endeavors.
    Because the SLG can virtually reproduce the sound of a guitar recorded with a microphone, players are free from complicated procedures involved in mic-ing up a guitar when recording at home or in other settings.
