I watched this show for the first time time earlier this year on a weekend while I slammed a pizza. Best weekend I’ve had in a long time. This show was incredible.
That actually wasn't a bad time for his final acid vision. It was THE time for it. If he hadn't have been distracted, he might not have been so close to death to have his realization about his daughter and the afterlife. He wouldn't have been able to evolve his thinking on it. He now knows she's waiting for him in a place that he's going to go when it is his time. That gave him his life back.
That’s a cool perspective to have on it. It also connects with his visions representing the “mainlining the secret truths of the universe” angle from the end of episode 2.
Someone mentioned that they started dressing Marty as 8th grader so Rust looks cooler in comparison lol And I think Marty misheard what Rust said as “scented meat”, a good follow up for “psycho’s fear”. Love your analysis.
Shout outs to you guys. One of the best break downs of season one I've had the pleasure of watching. Im a big time fan of season 1. I've periodically watched this season multiple times...every couple of years, I'll turn it on, and always comes away with something new.... That being... I think Rust really saw Carcosa....I remember The Scar Man talking with the lady... implying his 'mission' is almost complete....that he had work to do, but that his ascension was near.'" I haver very important work to do. I'm near the final stage." were the words that he used... I think Rust, because the 'demon he carries' was able to perceive that... considering Childess was almost complete with what he was trying to do...a ascension that took over the course of several years of horrific mutilated sacrifices. At least that's my thoughts right now... we'll see in a couple of years when I re-watch again. lol
Thanks man. Totally agree. It’s one of those shows that has a value on par with literature. You can watch it a dozen times and come away with a new understanding or theme after each watch. I personally waffle on what he saw each time I go through the finale. That’s the beauty of it.
How those 2 dumbass detectives had their careers made? They basically had Rust as a suspect the whole time. They were called in later by Marty. They did absolutely nothing... had their heads up their asses the whole time... but clearly took some credit later on. That's annoying.... probably true also. I guess they covered up for Tuttle & other powerful men later on, thus shitting on Rust (and Marty) good investigation and last-minute heroics. fantastic 8 episodes guys btw, props to you. Excellent work. I wonder what Marty & Rust futures are? I'm guessing this 20-year investigation took so much out of them both that they are out of the job, basically, they won't be pursuing any more crimes because they gave all that they could (and more). Would love to see them become besties though.
Such a good recap and critique. Thank you. If what you say is true then at least the crime was solved but it isn’t too far fetched in human nature to steal the glory of others. Hell, that’s all those at the top do. Be well.
Before I depart I’d like to recommend the documentary or podcast of any channel’s discussion on _The Octopus Murders_ that you can sit through if you enjoy mysteries and conspiracies. It’s a true story but in the vein of True Detective but in real life. This is up to you though. I just wanted to share as it brings the same feeling of dread, helplessness yet a glimmer of optimism that TD1 brings as a story. But I warn that it is a rabbit hole. A real Carcosa.
Thank-you for confirming that Errol's dad was Billy! There are several articles I've read saying that his dad was Sheriff Ted Childress. Can you tell me, though, how Ted and Billy are related? Could they be brothers?
It’s hard to figure out, here is the best Reddit post I could find outlining the entire cult. It’s a long read and 3 parts, but has the best detail out there: www.reddit.com/r/TrueDetective/comments/rthssr/3_parts_the_story_of_the_carcosa_cult_and_the/?share_id=PaTk1Cs1RtHTy_x-oIDl_&
This series is overrated as f, just my opinion, i just completed season 1 now, it's just a average series, not goated. Just a normal storyline, get's lag in between most of the episodes.
Were the Tuttles still involved in ‘95-‘12? Did they try to keep Lake Charles quiet? Or were they trying to cover up their legacy involved with the earlier killings and how this was a continuation that started by the Tuttles.
The way I understood it they stopped somewhere in the 90s, prior to Dora Lane case, but then Errol started copycat killings to get (their?) attention and they tried to suppress it ever since. Maybe they employed him for their deeds before, who knows.
It’s a great question. My gut tells me the Tuttles were passively involved. At this point they were too much in the public eye to be actively killing, but they 100% were involved in covering things up. My guess is they weren’t involved in abducting, but once the victims were captive, they probably participated here and there. This is a phenomenal Reddit thread that explains things really well: www.reddit.com/r/TrueDetective/comments/rthssr/3_parts_the_story_of_the_carcosa_cult_and_the/
True Detective Season 4 drops on the 14th so we’ll be going right into that. Later on this year we’re looking at The Boys Season 4 and House of Dragon Season 2. We’ll see what else drops this year, depending on what happens with Warrior when it hits Netflix we might make a big video on that too
If you watch one cultust standing a certain way with his hands behind his back in the sacrafice video, it very much looks like how Speece stands in the press conference. Remmeber, he is the head of the State Police who doesnt like Rust or Marty and helps BLT put together the task force with "good detectives who will brush it under the rug and label it Anti Christian crime. (when Marty rolls his eyes to that sentiment by Quesada about Teddy Bertrams competency). So, you have Billy Lee Tuttle, Edwin Tuttle, Billy Childress, probably Sherrif Ted Childress, maybe Speece. I think those are the original 5 in the video. The boys didnt wear masks from Toby Boulere's testimony to Russ taking pictures of him at Shepherds Flock. Therefore, they are the new breed of the cult. Errol is the evolution of the voodoo/santaria/Carcosa worship the cult practices.
Having not seen this until watching first 4 of Night Country and hearing all the Lovecraft tie ins, really made it seem kinda ambiguous as to whether maybe something supernatural was going on w Childress. The posh accent when dealing w his “follower” (half sister) being the real him. Demon, child of water people, or old one. This has me primed for a similar end for S4 but I do hope they at least tie more sacrifices to the Tuttles.
Just bought this season on Blu-ray, its get better every time, also just in case it gets cancelled because the the ones in charge don't want a good story like this told.
A really cool detail is Errol adopted all those accents from having learned to speak watching old movies as a kid. EDIT: One other detail/question. Since Rust was in that coma, does that mean his bar owner/sniper friend mailed out all those parcels?
I do love this first series, the tension the darkness and bizarreness, I'll remember they had me guessing so much I even questioned if it could be woody's character the way he turned so evil towards the women in his life
Time is a flat circle for real, Ill watch this series again, and again, and again, and again

This deserves way more likes

@winterhillwarriors Season 1 definitely gives the viewer at lot to reflect on. :)
I really wish they had unveiled who all the powerful people were involved with the cult and how they organized the sacrifices.
100% agreed. I do hope they pick up that plot at some point in the future
Hot take … I’m Team Spiral/Vortex was really there. And it makes the season infinitely creepier.
Someone mentioned that they started dressing Marty as 8th grader so Rust looks cooler in comparison lol And I think Marty misheard what Rust said as “scented meat”, a good follow up for “psycho’s fear”. Love your analysis.
In the hospital bed, Rust doesn't look like "absolute dog shit," he looks like Christ. I'm surprised you missed that.
I’m a very flawed man
@@winterhillwarriorsI'm sure Rust, as the risen Christ, will forgive You 🙏🏾
I think Marty heard *scented meat, rather than senate meat. (Still equally wrong either way though so doesn't really matter.)

Just saw “Longlegs” a few days ago. I would love to hear you guys do a breakdown. I got some “True Detective” vibes from it.
The one commonality between TD s1 fans: yearly sitting, again and again.
It’s one of the finest seasons of TV of all time. Nothing could convince me otherwise.
Just binged all your season 1 videos. Love TD S1, and I love the commentary. It’s an awesome balance of analysis and humor. Please keep it up!
Glad you enjoyed it! We’re covering House of the Dragon, Shogun, and Tokyo Vice right now so if you’re watching those shows tune in
It has been a pleasure watching those breakdowns, guys, great job! What is the next series you will cover?
Good to have you aboard. We’re hitting True Detective Season 4 starting next week.
This is the single greatest TV series freaking ever.

Funny you guys commenting on how gross the Childress house is, i’ve known several people whose apartments are far worse than that!
Damn. I’ve seen similar setups, but nothing quite matches that. Very well constructed setting, though. Hard not to have a strong reaction to it

Yeah im assuming the bar owner mailed it out. Especially since Marty was in bad shape and had to be in the hospital as well
I’m thinking the bar owner heard about them in the hospital from the news, and waited to hear from Rust.

It’s so intricate and well done. Definitely the type of series you have to rewatch to notice the nuances
