Had a German Shepherd. She was full of energy and go go go....walks would not tire her out. I had to get a bike, and she would run by my side while i biked. She learnt the commands slow down, stop, left and right while i rode the bike. Her favourite activity was going to the beach or park and chasing the birds around. She was the last dog in her litter, and the breeders had called her "little running dog". We got her a few months after my wife and I wedding. She was our baby before we had kids lol..She loved camping, hiking, running, fetch, chasing birds, Playing in the backyard with our kids, and guarding our house..about 2 months before her 11th birthday, i took her for a walk and only managed about 100m as she just turned around to come home. She had never wanted to return home from a walk. We knew something was wrong. She had no energy, could not keep any food down, and lost her appetite. She just wanted to rest by our side. Unfortunately, things went downhill pretty quick from there. We made the tough decision to put her down about 1 month before her 11th birthday. Was a sad day for our family. But we will be forever grateful for the memories and having Ava in our lives. ❤

This was sad to read. I remember when we had to put our dog down. It's so sad to watch them get like that.
Prayers for you and your family. 🙏

I have a Czech Line 18 month old GSD; he is awesome. He needs 2 X 1 hour walks per day plus ball throwing in the yard. He is my shadow an gives the most amazing love 24/7/365. He is so smart and intelligent, it's like having a best friend in the house who knows what you are thinking. He chill's out, he is relaxed a lot and has patience. He is very protective of the house, especially after dark - that is a good thing and I feel very safe with a 40kg GSD patrolling the house while my family is asleep. My main tip is the same one you mentioned - EXERCISE and TRAINING - these are not easy pet dogs but they are AWESOME. If you want the best dog in the world you have to get out and give him/ her their exercise. 100%. I also use frozen Kongs; and I interactive toys for feeding - GSD's need mental as well as physical exercise.

I'm a k9 cop and I have had a DDR GSD as my partner for 10 years now. He has always lived with me. He has changed the way I think about the breed. I knew nothing early on, and even until recently, I didn't realize how much I love the DDR shepherd. They "want" to work for you, evsn if uou are not using them for work, they still geneticly want to work for and please their owner. I wish cloning wasn't so expensive, I would clone the dog I have. Best dogs ever man

We rescued one from a shelter. This was my first GSD and I didn't read the handbook or watch the indoctrination video beforehand. She really tested me when we first got her and I did consider taking her back... But I didn't. A friend at work told me to wait a year because she'll change.... So I did. She has become one of the greatest family dogs I've ever known and I love the sense of security and her sense of humor!

OMG!! My life is definitely changed!! I agree 110% exercise is key, if you don't tire them out life is stressful! The shedding is exactly as you say. I had a GSD named Elliott for 10 years before I got my boy named Buck so I knew what to expect. German Shepherds really are a a commitment, but once they mature you have a majestic, loyal protector.

I waited over two years to get my dog, just doing research and narrowing down the breeds until I landed on GSDs. Even then I was unsure if I could handle a working line as my first dog. Even with all that time researching, not growing up around dogs because of allergies certainly makes getting one interesting! %100 happy with my Czech boy, he is so similar to Odin in this video. Even just listening to your general advice for owning these dogs mirrors my experience perfectly. Always glad to see other people invested in their pets’ care and breed history. 😊

Great video. I was lucky enough to adopt a female GSD about three weeks ago as a stray from a guy living in an apartment nearby. And in short like yourself, it's been a life changer. I have gone from being virtually sedentary to being more physically active than I have been in decades !! I absolutely adore this dog. I found out that she is actually a pure bred GSD complete with registered parents etc. I was floored when, pulling up to the location where she was adopted, Charlotte ran up to me and cuddled against me as if we had known each other for years! I had been adopted, I was told by my girlfriend. And now new to the world of GSD's, I am on an incredible learning curve and I am very glad to be on it.

Great, very informative. I have two German Shepherds male and female. Half brother half sister. Same father. Czechoslovakian East German working bloodlines. Handful but I love them. Like a full time job. The shedding is one big deal with brooms and vacuuming. I feed them boiled chicken morning and night and give them multivitamins each day. Which cost the same as human vitamins. Chicken flavored chewable. Plus milk bones which they LOVE. I own my own business so they come along on some of my jobs. My guys are black and tan. All black with tan legs and paws. Military police colors.

I own a working line GSD. He was to calm and had some challenges so his training for becoming a police dog were cancelled. The owner/trainer start looking for a good family for him and thats how he came to us. He has drive but he is also very calm. As long as he has three walks every day sprinkled with mental challenges and different training and an occasional possibility to run he is more or less always calm and very much a couch potato. He never get zoomies inside. If he want's attention he comes to us and give us a hint. Very often he bumps my arm with his snout or he sits in front and presents a paw often combined with his eyes pointing to the stairs telling us there is something upstairs he want. Last walk is something he want around 2130 and he might tell us. Otherwise he want some form of training, treat or play/toy. He is a perfect match for us and we do not find it very hard to stimulate his needs. If we are short for time we can always take him somewhere where he can run and play. This is what he enjoys the most regarding exercise and it sometimes can be a good time saver. A tired dog is a happy dog. I would not recommend a working line dog for single persons or couples not fit for exercising the dog. Also GSD's bond tightly to their owners and do not enjoy being alone for long periods. They follow you everywhere and want to be where you are most of the time.

Shes about 8 months and in heat.
She has completely changed and consumed my life. I had no idea how much work it was going to take care of this dog and train her. I do a lot of what you described. I have had a lot of frustrating days with her but some amazing days with her too. She is stubborn and does not want to do what I tell her to which frustrates me.ninhave trained an Akita and a rotweiler/shepherd mix and my girl is smart.....too smart. I had to get me some training tools that wpuld help me to be successful with her because she is getting big and strong. Im a small woman and I amm 55yrs old.
She is kicking my butt but I love her so much and enjoy being with her when she is not in heat of course. Shenis so moody right now.

    Dear Sir,
Odin is a gorgeous dog & clearly much loved & well cared for. I've just got my second one ( medium coat) after an absence of 34 years; I just forgot just how good natured they are & just like my first one follows me everywhere (toilet included!). They are truly a one man/woman dog & never seem to stray of your sight. I live on the 3rd floor & he nudges me with his nose or puts his two paws on the bed to remind me he needs to relieve himself in the back yard ( not trained to so but from his own initiative). The loss of hair & combing is definitely not an issue for me as I am familiar with it & accepts it as being in the nature of the breed. I noticed that most G.S.D's tend to be rather well looked after ( at least in my neighbourhood) as owners take a certain pride in their charge. A most noble breed with great attributes; always alert & gentle with all members of the family. I agree with your good self; deprive him of his exercises & destruction will happen. Best wishes & kind regards.

I realized very quickly what I actually had on on my hands. I have been relentlessly training him. He is so amazing now. He’s been the biggest challenge of my life, and the most rewarding. And since I’m the one who does all the work. Literally all the work. I train him. I play w him. I feed him all his food, snacks and treats or bones. I do brain games w him. And I take him on all his walks. I groom him. I love him. So naturally, the dog loves me most. lol. 😂. Sorry guys, you snooze you loose! 🐕. He’s the best companion now. He goes w me everywhere 😊

I see a lot of comments about doing research for a couple years before deciding on a GS. I too am at two years, have decided on a working line GS, have talked to a breeder. However, I have one fear. I currently have a GS mix so I know the exercise that's needed however she is older and has been my best friend and I am worried about making her last few years chaotic. She loves puppies but she's always just had me. I don't want her to feel like she's being replaced but I would also love to have a hiking, snow shoeing, training buddy again. I don't want my current dog to get depressed when she sees me taking the new puppy out. It's a really hard decision.

A good working line GSD is not naturaly agressive, they are very confident in their strenght so they are calm around people or other dogs unless provoked. They are also very good at identifying threats so they are not naturaly aggresive to any random stranger but they can easily identify someone with a suspicious attitude and become more alert and ready to attack if needed. Also they are fearless and won't hesitate to protect you. If you have a somewhat active lifestyle and you involve them in your activities they are a joy to have and way easier and more intuitive than people think

Hey, you have an amazing dog, he is so handsome, I love it, god bless him! I live in Cologne, Germany, moved here one year ago, and want to have an east German shepherd working line just like yours, but I don't know which breeder I should go for... Do you know any good breeder where I can have good, high drive, and healthy German Shepherd just like yours? Love the channel, by the way :)

I like to mention grateful for reading, this: Think twice... Before you invest about 800 to 2.5 thousand USD in this kind of dog, if you're single or not, you need to buy and prepare special food for the dog, for the next 12 years (need good diet, first quality meat and chicken with vegetables, and proplan or other premium balanced dog food, this kind of dog can't eat cheap food) like a small kid, take the dog to doctor regularly, take with you wherever you want to go, this dog need a very quiet place to rest (and a cold place) to sleep well, if you need to go to Walmart, is a problem, you can't take with you the dog, and you can't live him alone in home because the ddr dog develops a obsessive bond with owners, and if you're not present discharge frustration with everything close to it's Jaws, including the fascia of the car, the garden grass, tools, furniture etc. No matter if you walk him 2 miles in the morning, the dog sleep 1 hour and he is ready for another 2 miles, and the night walk for at least other 50 minutes, and DDR are tough dogs, a normal dog with a simple punish with roller newspaper is enough to make him understand, this dog let you believe he is understand, but 20 minutes later do the same again and you can saw his sight challenging your patience all the time, or put expression of "so sorry forgive me" ... but... are so faithful dogs, so loyal, so funny, always want to play, sleep at your feet, when get boring of hear you talking, go for himself for his leash to force you to walk him, and if you always expect your dog some day gone to change and want to make efforts to please you, like other dogs... forget it, that's never go to happen, a DDR is a DDR. Ahhh I forget to mention, it's a dog with very very not attenuation primitive instincts, so is a natural predator, always is searching and chaising, in full moon go very excited, for some reason have premonitions (believe that) and for the pleasant of your neighborhood hauling like a wolf in so sad way that chill your skin, and always go to protect or overprotect you and your house of strangers, and is a fearless dog, you don't need to teach him it's on its genes be one with you. The claws are so big and hard that is very dangerous, it can cut your skin playing with you or damage your clothes or the car seats. Buy finally after all... Is my best friend. I recommend you buy a female, but be patient like human girls always have complains about everything, the hour of the walk, hour of food, temperature of the food, the sleeping blanket, the food itself, and literally present complains making special noises and special barkins that go to make you 2 things try to understand what is the problem and laugh all day.

There’s no such thing as pure DDR line dogs anymore. I own a “DDR” dog but I do not in any way think he’s pure East German. It’s a marketing myth for the most part, especially in the US.

    • @snowball6538
      @snowball6538 5 месяцев назад +1

You are probably right about there not being any pure DDR shepherds left anymore. I do think if you spend enough time around them you can visibly see the difference between the and what likes are mixed with what. “DDR” without a brick like head and muzzle probably has none in it. The head is a huge point of difference. I see a lot of DDR dogs mixed with show line unfortunately. Heavy front end, big head, deep chest but sloping back. I have a Czech line, which I much prefer in terms of build. Colouring is largely the same as a normal working line but they are lighter/ more athletic and have the benefits of a working line shepherd with 70% (plucked the number out of thin air but basically more than a working line , not as mental as a full Mali)of the athleticism of a Malinios.

Bro I love the working line german shepherd but I have experience with only small dogs till now (11year old pomeranian and 6 year old shihtzu). Is is recommended as I am an introvert myself and don't like to walk with my dog everyday outside (as I don't do it myself). But my house is kindof big in a remote place and I need a dog for security who will be very intelligent (require least effort in training), have a calm yet aggresive temperment and would gladly give life if needed for my family's protection. So should I get the working line GSD and if I take a female will that be a better decission as I don't like them humping on me in during heat or something else.

In the beginning you have to spend lotta time socializing your dog so dog can stay calm in the house or on your walks. You can also give your puppy some toys and stuff to keep him calm throughout the day. The way you can tell what line your dog is from you can ask your breeder they will know and look at the Pedegree as will.

When you received the dog you must carry time to time in your arms to make it confident, give him food on your own hands, to develop a solid bond with him, in the first walks use chest leash, then walk him one round to the the block, then 2, but try that the dog don't develop fear to any special thing for example bikes, cars etc. Then at 4 months for vaccine reasons take to the Park or the woods, etc. In my case my female at the beginning get exhausted with 500 meters at 2 months, but little by little, now walk 7 kilometers a day, by the morning, 2 days a week 10kms, and all nights a walk of about 40 to 50 minutes, 6 days of the week because I rest all Sunday ☺️. This dog needs love, care he is like a kid, and exercise their intelligence teaching new things and respiting constantly the already learned, when the dog go older 2 or 3 years, became more stable, and more quiet but never ever change and became a tipical domestic dog, always gone a be a DDR, so it's a fearless dog, is very loyal, suffer a lot with separation of his owner so need to be very socialized, because don't forget is a dog, don't thing is a simple puppy, if you don't care fine and teach him with common sense and teach him to atack like a game you are going to autogenerated a great problem for the next 12 years. And worst you can cause a disaster to others, if you have a dangerous dog you can go to jail for injured inocent people, and believe me, it's a very very dangerous dog. So if you decide with hand on hart that you always... no matter if you are tired, sick, in bad mood or whatever, care of your dog, go ahead and invest 2.5 K USD in a dog that became, your best friend, always loyal and faithful
